I really enjoy the design. I bought two "white" ones (that replaced two last gen echo plus's) that sit under my mounted TV and are used as the "sound bar",,, they sound fantastic and look really cool, more modern futuristic, than the cylinders. Good review!
i tried this echo in different places in my kitchen. I dont know why, but it sounded the fullest when it was placed near the corner of the room. First i thought it would be nice to fire it from the middle of a wall firing in the direction i normally work while doing the cooking.....but it really does better work from the corner of the room Very rich und full sound. Thank you for your inspiration and nice videos.
I received mine today, 2 of them. The setup was a breathe thanks to the factory pre-setting, basically plug and play. I just had to create a stereo pair for my kitchen background musical scape :) The sound is really exceptionnal. I was planning to add an Echo Sub, but it wont be necessary after the first few hours of listening, I have ample basses for a casual kitchen music source. I really highly recommend them. Of course all automations and smart home controls do work right of the bat. Great review Stu , thanks :)
Well. Great review. I will 100% get this. For now I am using the Harman/Kardon Onyx studio 3 wireconnected to my 2nd gen Echo dot. So this round design will fit perfect! I like it.

Hi great video reviews by the way, this year I upgraded from the older echo cylinders first I bought one blue one on a special deal I went for the blue one for £65+ a free Philips Hue smart light, I was so impressed by the sound, I decided to order another one including the free gift Philips Hue smart light so now I have 5 around my house so I have pared up the other blue echo 4 so I can have stereo sound & it works incredible well giving me a punchy bass with beautiful sound a great stereo separation, we aso got the round 4fth echo dots in the kitchen and in the other bedroom 2 of them for stereo mode, I now quite a few people don’t like the round shape of the echo dot & the echo larger speakers but in my opinion I think they look very nice & different. So thanks for your reviews & now I’m subscribed to your channel cheers & peace ✌️ for the new year.
Wonder how a couple of these would sound compared to two home pod minis. The price will be comparable, but not sure if the Apple speakers are competing against the dots. Personally think all echos now should come with the clock display.

The reason the set up was so easy is because when you order the device you checked the box that said link this device with my account. So that illuminated any type of set up with it.

CAVEAT -- There are three new Echo balls, this one is the most expensive of the three at £89.99 and its party tricks include the 2 tweeters and the Zigbee hub (for Ikea lights, for example). Below there's the Echo Dot LED (with clock) and Echo Dot 4th Gen (without clock) at 59.99 and 49.99 respectively. But they don't have neither the tweeters and the Zigbee. Because they have exactly the same shape, seen in isolation is very easy to get confused. Now let's see how low they go on Black Friday ... last year I bought my Echo Dot for about £20 and my Flex for £15. If only they made a battery powered IP65 version ...

I love my echos.. have them all over the house. Most importantly for multi room music. Any sound improvements year on year always gets me upgrading a few of mine... and with Amazon's very generous trade in programme... if you trade in a 2nd gen model you can pick up the new one for £41 (£25 cash and 25% off the new one). The spherical shape is a weird one. I was wondering if it was done 'just because' and that they had now lost the '360 degree' sound - given the new models are directional. I suppose most of these will always be placed in a corner or infront of a wall so therefore the 360 nature of the old ones is often lost. Your review has shown me that the shape change is not just form over function... but its enabled them to increase the quality of the sound so thats forgivable. I must admit this blue one is a git garish and id rather stick with black as it is a more uniform colour and will disappear better in the room. The sphere is shorter than the gen 3 but much fatter so you might need to make a bit more room for these. Regardless... I will trade in couple of my gen 2s and see how i get on.

I bought a pair of these for about £120 when they were on offer. I have them as a stereo pair on my bedroom window sill. They sound far, far better than any conventional mini hifi, and take up less room. (I actually do like the spherical shape, but there’s no accounting for taste). My only issue has been a tendency to drop audio streams for BBC Sounds, and sometimes to stop behaving as a pair. This seems to be happening less frequently, thank goodness.

Good afternoon Stu. Great channel and content. I’ve just bought two of these. At first, I thought that I wouldn’t like the shape but they have grown on me hence the purchase. So far everything is going well. My only complaint at the moment is as follows: I have them paired up with a Fire TV 4K stick. While it sounds amazing, I get the audio disconnecting a few times. If you haven't already, when filming the dot 4th gen, can you compare to the 3rd? They have the same 1.6 inch speaker so be interesting to if the positional change makes any difference.
We will probably see this thing here in Belgium in about 5 years or so, if you know that we can still only order the spaghetti tube shaped version of the Echo Plus here and only in Black/Grey. Amazon decided to make 'international versions' of the Echos and I really can't figure out why. We have an amazon.com account for Alexa (we mostly use it for home automation), so which device is linked to that account (spaghetti, hocky puck or death star) seems irrelevant. As for the shape, I mentioned this on another page, the placement of the buttons is a bit unfortunate. My wife sits in a wheel chair and when sitting lower, she probably won't be able to see (and maybe use) the buttons properly. Previous versions had the buttons nicely visible on top. Same for the indicator light. The fact that the round light is at the bottom, makes the circular shaped volume indicator useless, since you can't see the difference between volume 1 to 4 and 7 to 10. A few odd decisions.
Re the design, different strokes and all that. I much prefer the "cylinder" shape of the 3rd Gen and the colour coordinated power lead. Also it (and the 5th Gen) have dropped massively in price, now £24.99 on Amazon and at Argos. I bought one last week and it looks great, sitting on the top of one of my ancient, 1980's black Wharfedale Speakers, which are still going strong! 😉😉
"oooo there's Zigbee". I like the sound and capability updates, along with the expected new software updates too, however, I think the design is awful. Made worse by the fact I don't like the blue, it's just not a nice combo of plastic and fabric. Also spotted how you were struggling to see the volume levels - the light on the bottom might be ok for ambient light but not functional at all.
Yeah, if you’re using the buttons it is a bit more difficult to see! Most of the time i use voice to control the volume tho, so not a huge deal, but yeah great spot👌

not a fan of the new design, don't like the design of the buttons or the lights being almost hidden away around the base. i won't be getting one, will stick to my input and sexy yamaha speakers.
@stu, I was wondering would this drown out noisy neighbors upstairs that make noise while I try to sleep? Like if I put on something like white noise or fireplace or thunderstorm, I’m sick and tired of them and hearing them while I try to sleep and it’s driving me insane.....thanks for the help.

If you order directly from Amazon, they set up your Echo beforehand. Thats why setup was so easy. If you had bought from a retail store this wouldn't be the case.

I have a 2nd gen echo plus.... I cant justify upgrading to this. It doesnt really have anything new or significantly better than what I already have. Yes sound quality is marginally increased and it operates a bit faster than the older ones due to the new chip BUT theres nothing significantly better. If sound quality is the selling point of this then why not just hook older versions up to a decent speaker or stereo via bluetooth or the 3.5mm jack
I own both and can advise that 4th gen gives more direct sound and studio gives you omnidirectional sound, which is due to their design. I have pairs of both and tested both for movies and for music and in the end, 2 4th gens give punchier/present/direct sound for 2.1 music(paired with echo sub) and 2 studios give louder/immersive/deep bass without need for sub for 5.1 movies.
Loved the review ... your music taste however must be designed to test the bass and the high notes. Truly awful looking thing tbh ... have got a bunch of echo dots round the house and don’t use my echo for music playing as I’ve got Bose speakers with Alexa .... not sure I really get this ....
I've had three of these for three years. Disappointingly, Alexa doesn't seemed to have evolved in terms of voice commands. She still can't answer three most basic of questions.

Thanks stu after watching your review yesterday I ordered 2 speakers and there fantastic even better then the Sonos ones we’ve replaced them with.
Design is fine especialy the smaller dot, which is cute. The only design fault is the white cable & plug when used with the black version.
I think the front firing speakers was a great change. But I agree the sphere shape is a bit odd but can probably get used to it

I was shocked with how blue it looked. For some reason, it look darker, like grayish in other vids.

not a fan of the new design, don't like the design of the buttons or the lights being almost hidden away around the base. i won't be getting one, will stick to my input and sexy yamaha speakers.

@stu, I was wondering would this drown out noisy neighbors upstairs that make noise while I try to sleep? Like if I put on something like white noise or fireplace or thunderstorm, I’m sick and tired of them and hearing them while I try to sleep and it’s driving me insane.....thanks for the help.

If you order directly from Amazon, they set up your Echo beforehand. Thats why setup was so easy. If you had bought from a retail store this wouldn't be the case.

I have a 2nd gen echo plus.... I cant justify upgrading to this. It doesnt really have anything new or significantly better than what I already have. Yes sound quality is marginally increased and it operates a bit faster than the older ones due to the new chip BUT theres nothing significantly better. If sound quality is the selling point of this then why not just hook older versions up to a decent speaker or stereo via bluetooth or the 3.5mm jack
Should I upgrade echo plus 2nd to echo 4th and one more question can echo plus beat this echo 4th in any sector?
So echo 4th gen or Studio for music??
I own both and can advise that 4th gen gives more direct sound and studio gives you omnidirectional sound, which is due to their design. I have pairs of both and tested both for movies and for music and in the end, 2 4th gens give punchier/present/direct sound for 2.1 music(paired with echo sub) and 2 studios give louder/immersive/deep bass without need for sub for 5.1 movies.

Loved the review ... your music taste however must be designed to test the bass and the high notes. Truly awful looking thing tbh ... have got a bunch of echo dots round the house and don’t use my echo for music playing as I’ve got Bose speakers with Alexa .... not sure I really get this ....
I've had three of these for three years. Disappointingly, Alexa doesn't seemed to have evolved in terms of voice commands. She still can't answer three most basic of questions.
