Round has always been a favorite shape.
You would think that with each Dot upgrade that the sound would be worth the price increase…..but I don’t think so either. I still LOVE the sound I get from my 3rd gen Dots that I installed years ago in a corner of each room in my house, incl bathroom. The sound is GREAT. And when played all together in UNISON the sound is PHENOMENAL. Don’t think I’ll EVER need to upgrade to anything “better”.
i prefer the old puck shape, i also like to have aux out so i can connect my Yamaha speakers and get decent sound quality, i don't like the sound from the built in speakers, need a lot of tweaking to the equaliser to even get it bearable.
God, why couldn't it come with a matching color power cord?
Just watched a video on the new iPad from Apple and this video sums up what I had expected. Manufacturers seem to be feeling the necessity to launch new products at least each year, but without any significant changes or new ideas. It's almost a case of 'Let's tweak the software, bung it in the same package , tell everyone it's the best thing we've ever done and charge a premium for it'. I don't think there's anything radical about this speaker over much earlier generations, it still does the same things and sounds more or less the same. Customers should not be brainwashed into feeling they need to upgrade their stuff every year, it's bad for the environment, bad for innovation and bad for the pocket. I guess for the tiny number of customers who have never had an echo dot before, yep they are getting the latest product. Just count how many different Kindles there are, Echo devices, iPhones, watches... the list is endless. Just wish manufacturers would slow down and spend more time being innovative before releasing their next products. Rant over! 😊
No one’s forcing you or anyone else to buy this. Upgrades don’t need to be “radical” to be considered as having justified their existence.
This literally doesn’t do the same thing as the previous one - it has multiple new hardware features. Not “software tweaks “.
The last model came out two years ago, not one. Amazon still sell the last model. In fact they still sell the model previous to that - the third gen.
All in all, really not much grounds for complaint here. For me and my use case (and I won’t be alone) this new model now featuring touch sensitivity on the top and a temperature sensor is a significant improvement over the last model.
Amazon have a 40% sale on all echo dots, just bought the 5th gen with clock for £40. Very happy with that price
I just bought it for £27 on Amazon
@@townsjim the one without the clock? they are awesome
@@JuniusGaming they all have a clock mate
I also bought mine on sale! 5th gen with clock
@@townsjimno they don’t, the one with the clock is not the £27 one
Very underrated review channel, high quality editing, honest unfiltered opinion, humor. Keep up the great work!
Why do they use a white cable on a black device!
Someone else mentioned this - I think it’s because more people have light colour walls than dark, so it means it can be less obtrusive… doesn’t work for me mind with dark green walls 😂👀
It’s for environmental reasons they use the same chargers for every device instead of creating different colors which requires more plastic
@dolphisun1790 Yet they use plastic and paper to mail you their products. Yeah real environmental friendly. Lol
So they can use the same with every color of dot
But the Echo dots 1 and 2 came with a black cord. It just looks better.
We have 2x 3rd gen dots in bedrooms and a 4th gen full echo downstairs. I've looked into upgrading my bedroom dot to a 5th gen with clock but like you the price and functionality just doesn't add up (for my home). We generally use the 4th gen downstairs most, and it's audio in our small home is more than adequate without rattling the windows. I'll wait for a bit and see if the price comes down before I consider upgrading my bedroom to a 5th gen dot... Great Video (if only to confirm my decision was right🤣)
Love the shape, heaps better
I like the new design a little more
I love your expression when Alexa says hello in every language on the planet. 😀
Every. Bloody. Time. 😂
I've got a 4th gen and I've previously owned a 3rd gen. I use it primarily for voice commands for my Xbox Series X. It works really well for that - better than Kinect ever did in my experience. The only thing I wish the 4th gen had is a setting so if you have a cable plugged into the aux output, you can still get sound through the Dot's own speaker as well, cos there is no way to do that unfortunately.
1:37 - I prefer the older puck style design, takes up less space and is more discreet.
Absolutely! The echo dot IMO doesnt benefit at all from the spherical design!
Agree I’ve so much stuff in my rooms already..I need stealth
Do you often find yourself in desperate need of the couple of inches of space directly above your Echoes? Really?
@@citizen3000 Dont feed the troll
Will Amazon release an Echo 5th Gen as well? I'm confused why they only released the dot version without even mentioning the regular echo.
I bought 10 of them and "stereo paired" them around the house. I wanted ambient music at a lower volume and small footprint. These fit the bill 100% in all categories!
Hey Stu, excellent review as always. We did a video showing why it's worth the extra $10 for the one with the clock. As that little display does a whole lot more than before.
No one talks about losing the threaded 3/8 on the bottom.
I do like the form, but liked the old shape as well
It doesn't make sense the fact you're complaining about setting up the device. Just cause you bought it in the UK it doesn't automatically know what language you speak nor which country you're in hahah.
Even when you buy a new phone that's necessary for you to be able to use it.
Overall, great video!
It just has to pair up with his already installed so and would know all his information
@@Jakegraham62 not if you’re setting it up as a new device instead of simply adding your account to it lol. Plus before you even buy there’s an option to do that so that when you plug it it is automatically connected to all your info
@@alexbandeira3366 either way. Won’t bug me either way. My first Gen finally died, and it’s time to finally buy a new one. I won’t have to deal with the setup too many time.
Great review. Honest & clear. MOST helpful. The globe style is ok, it seems very functional in spite of shape. Thanks.
Just bought 1 today. Not a real tech person, but someone at work uses theirs to play radio over it and handy that at different times of the day stations can be changed by just saying the radio station name.
I saw in the blurb you can have an echo set to dual language; my idea was it would help practice speaking French and Spanish, but I found out it doesn't " because it depends where you live" even though there are clear settings UK English and European French and UK English and European Spanish.
So, an early Christmas treat has turned out to be a let-down and a disappointment at my 1st purchase of an amazon device.
Will be checking returns policy and not planning to buy anymore of the amazon products.
I really like the new upgrades that has been offered in this new gen smart speaker.
Btw, nowhere on the Echo Dot 5th gen product listing do they promise “a massive increase in sound quality”. Not even “kinda”, nothing like it.
It says “improved speaker quality, delivering clearer vocals and deeper bass”. Pretty modest and in-line with what reviews other than yours have confirmed.
Actually the press release, (if you had read it) says this:
*The all-new Echo Dot and Echo Dot with Clock are the most powerful yet. The redesigned audio architecture features a custom full-range driver and the highest excursion speaker of any Echo Dot, delivering clear vocals and up to double the bass of the previous generation*
Also, on the product listing it says this;
*Our best-sounding Echo Dot yet: enjoy an improved audio experience compared to any previous Echo Dot with Alexa for clearer vocals, deeper bass and vibrant sound in any room*
I think me condensing that to 'a massive increase in sound quality' is perfectly justified.
I already have a mesh network. I'd rather see it having 2 tweeters like a mini studio. I won't be tapping it. That's why it's got a voice commands.
Its handy for a quick snap interaction rather than asking it to play and pause the music, but yeah, itll be very niche case use! And im the same, already using linksys hardwired via ethernet. If dots had ethernet, id consider changing over to eero.
Solid review thank you!
Another quality of life improvement is Echo dot 5th gen has ultrasound presence detection, so you can set routine like turn on the lights when someone is detected in the room 🙃
I’ve been testing this out… so far it’s not been too accurate!
lol that first boot-up is like a machine version of speaking in tongues
The devil is inside the machine! 👹
The review only talks in terms of whether to upgrade, but there is a better case for upgrading your main dot, and demoting your old one to another room
the way of explaining is sooo fantastic 😂😂keep growing love from INDIA❤
im curious as to how these compare with Apple HomePod minis. Although similar in size - I find the sound quality of the HomePod minis very very good especially when stereo paired together.
I guess the standard echo is more comparable but a bigger speaker.
Sound wise there’s no comparison, the HomePod minis are excellent. BUT, imo, lacking in every other feature.
The clock is looking pretty cute! And, I think it will be entertaining.
Aurora haney school
When I first set up my Echo Dot (with clock) the other day, the "Tap" feature didn't work, in spite of the fact that it said it was "enabled" in the App. If you tapped that, nothing happened, then all of a sudden, there were "options" in the App and the feature worked on the device!
This thing is awesome
It’s certainly a good update
@@StusReviewsUK that’s rigt
@@StusReviewsUK that’s right
Stu, I got one of these about a week ago. In my opinion, I think some what Alexa says sounds more robotic. You run into that at all?
Thanks for the info. Is this not the one with the new display in it or is that a different version? Or is that US only as we always get left behind lol
There are actually 2 versions - one without clock (standard) and the echo dot ‘with clock’ which is £10 more expensive 👍 (this one is the standard model)
@@StusReviewsUK ah cool thanks. I think I like the idea of a clock on the front. Ot sure it's worth £10 though lol.
I love my echo 5
Echo DOT 5?
How is the sound quality? 🙂
@@loveistheanswer5924 I think it's great!
Especially compared to the previous generations of echo dots
Can you dim the clock? I like a dark bedroom! Thanks
it can dim based on how dark a room is
Thank you for this blessing
This guy's channel should be called I complain a lot LOL
Sounds like you’re complaining. Welcome to the club. 🥃
I also like the puck style better. I just purchased the dot 5 only to try and run a Bose speaker along with other echo devices. I wish the flex or simple cheap dot were still available for this concept. My guess is Amazon trying to force all Amazon speakers for whole house music. But I am just starting this journey.
Oh my stars just got to the end. No flipping audio aux. I guess I have to find a 4th gen. And after watching Studio review I think I’ll replace the Bose 500 with Studio.
This chap is Jeremy Clarkson surely.
Of course I managed to buy a 4th generation a month ago 🤪. But actually your review was a comfort for my own stupidity 😊
Yeah I wouldn’t be too upset!
Thanks Stu.
Stupid question time
If a buy an echo and pay for a single device music subscription myself how easy would it be to set it up for someone else .
I bought this and find the bass practically non existent. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone who wants a smart speaker for listening to music.
how to set up the led display accelerometer?
No, I don't like the spherical type. Have a 3rd gen echo and will get a studio
I have the 2nd Gen Dot (£49.99 full price), the 3rd Gen Dot (£24.99 half price), and I've just bought the 5th Gen Dot (£26.99 half price) ... The 2nd Gen is obviously poor in sound quality. The 3rd Gen is much better than the 2nd. The 3rd Gen is indeed better sound quality than the 3rd Gen, with a richer sound with better bass. I really like the globe design much more than I thought I would. I didn't mind the multi-language setup prompt as it only happens once! It was amusing to hear it talking to itself in tongues! What I found more annoying was the default American accent! I had to dig around in settings to change it to a UK accent.
MY VERDICT: All in all, a very nice Star Trek style "Talking Computer" for £27 quid! 👍 There's really NOT a lot to find fault with at that price! And Alexa was the brainchild of Jeff Bezos! No wonder he's one of the World's richest men!
Incidentally, I disagree regarding the sound quality! (Definitely better than the 3rd Gen) This device is NOT intended to replace my fancy vintage 1970's Hi-Fi, which sounds superb! For the price, and for what it is, the Echo Dot sound is really good! Great for bedtime radio, etc!
EDIT: The problem with temperature sensors, is one of CALIBRATION! ... I have various digital hygrometer / thermometers, and they all read different temps! The Echo Dot is in broad agreement, but you can never trust these things to be anything but a rough guide.
ANOTHER EDIT: Regarding the omission of 3.5mm, perhaps users could connect older audio equipment using a Bluetooth adaptor?
Echo Dot 5th Gen for £26.99 = No brainer!
Stu. You need to dampen the audio in your new room with shelves full of the finest single malts available to humanity. We want them here and we want them now (IYKNK) 😉
Haha, yes the dampening will come soon. 👌
these only really make sense for travelling. For the the sound quality too bad for permanent home use. better to look at something bigger, like an Amazon echo, or other larger speaker.
Amazon are discounting the much larger echo 4 for just £10 more right now.
It’s more about offering whole home Smart Control rather than every room audio, as normally the dot is far cheaper than the larger options. But yes it definitely isn’t great for audio!
God, that setup would have me chucking it through the nearest window.
I’ll stick with the echo show five 2nd gen because you don’t get that kind of crap!
The pause seems intermittent.
My rating: Shit!
Just after penning my Amazon review for the Gen5 (3 stars and mostly meh) I ran across this review, which is dead on. Very nicely done. De-contenting the 3.5mm stereo jack is a big disappointment -- I'm itching to break it open to see if the mainboard has pads for one... I bet there are... The new, highly hyped sound is bass-ier but hardly balanced. As for the tap: not useful. My houseful of Echo devices are for voice control; I can't even easily reach most of them. Excellent review. Thanks.
So the sound quality of the echo dot 5 is not good?
@@loveistheanswer5924 Sound quality is to a large extent subjective. Gen5's sound is not good for me because I mostly listen to jazz and classical music, where tone balance should be (mostly) neutral. Gen5 is more for rock/popular, where heavy, pounding bass is a plus. For me Gen4 has good balance. For a dedicated rocker, Gen4 has a wimpy low end. I've dialed back the bass on my Gen5 using the equalizer... which I never seem to able to find twice.
Removing aux out a big fail. I bought one without knowing intending to feed it into a non smart speaker with an aux. Ah well, was like $27
First.
Just looked at this on Smart Home channel. Its ok. Not a patch on the Echo 4. The leds aren't as clear.
Winner Winner - Chicken Dinner! 🍗!!!!
@@StusReviewsUK Havnt had a nice chicken dinner in a while.😅 Just realised this wasnt the clock version...
Black dot but white power lead, OCD in overdrive
I know right! I guess the thinking is that more people have white or light colour walls, so white cables more easily blend in than if it were black.
The temp sensor is terrible, it works with super long time periods between reads and it doesn't work properly with routines. Please test triggering with a routine, you won't be impressed.
Why have they not allowed echo dots to work with Echo Studios for surround sound?
👁👄👁 shame i cant tag @amazon.
My room blends in with black cables better because my cabinet is black so it blends in, not much with white cables.
I've still got 3rd gen echo dots in every room and they are still fine for me although I do have 1 4th Gen Echo (big one)
Currently got Tenda Nova mesh and I have been tempted to get the Eero mesh system but still not sure it's even worth me upgrading from the 3rd gen dots.
Yeah I’m using Linksys mesh. There’s benefits to having dedicated mesh I guess, especially if you hardwire nodes which would have been good for the dots, having Ethernet! It’s a shame they don’t!
@@StusReviewsUK Completely agree, and the fact they are barrel connectors instead of 1 of the types of mini USB would mean no way to externally add them.
I want to say a bit of a oversight but something tells me that was deliberate
Great content. However just got eero setup today and and no Wi-Fi exender or mesh, yet for UK. Cheers Bezos
Yes - as far as I can tell, there is no Eero support in the UK yet. Any clarity on this? Also, the lack of a 3.5 out probably means that for me (and a million others?) that this is a non-starter. If the Eero connectivity is coming to the 4th gen via an update, then surely this is the better option?
You can pair 2 together and they will play the same music throughout the home ?
Yea its stereo mode its even much better when you put two(or more) in one room
Yes
im with ya, don't like the globe
How's the accuracy of the temperature sensor. Has anyone been able to test it against a know accurate device.
It seems on par with the SwitchBot climate sensor and Amazon own climate sensor from what I can see. Just reading now, showing SwitchBot as 20.8 and echo dot as 20.4, given they are at different sides of the room, that .4 degree difference could be environmental.
I did and was fairly accurate.
Google had that tap feature for ages. Think I’ll stick with my nest mini and echo dot 4
Didn’t they permanently disable that? Not a great example.
@@citizen3000 no still works
@@thomaswalker1258 Tap directly on the top still works? Pretty sure they disabled that in 2017.
@@citizen3000 you place your hand on the side buttons and then it will stop whatever is playing
@@thomaswalker1258 Yes, so as I said the top tap doesn’t work. So it isn’t the same functionality. Tapping the sides doesn’t work as well as tapping the top did, so it’s less convenient and makes you want to use it less.
I know - I had 4 of them for years. Anyway so the features aren’t really equivalent. I mean, Amazons top-tap actually works.
Hello there
Obi wan is that you??
Microphone upgrade, eh ? (been a while)
Yeah a few months ago!
Look at you all grumpy,eh?
I'm british. Grumpy is a default emotion. 🇬🇧
No clock option 🤷🏼♂️
There’s a clock option!
I hate this shape of echo. Looks cheap ( I know it is). I still have the cylinder and puck ones and will not upgrade until they fix the shape.
Puck style were great. One of my old 2nd gen dots just died 😩
same for me
