In this video we'll we're tackling the perplexing issue of why Starnet isn't playing nice with Siril.
Astrophotography enthusiasts often rely on a combination of tools to enhance and process their celestial captures. While both Starnet and Siril are popular choices in their respective niches, there's a hiccup when it comes to seamless integration.Today we'll uncover the root cause behind this compatibility conundrum.

My old (but beloved) 2011 HP notebook doesn't work with Starnet++. It's an Intel i5 M430 2.27 GHz CPU running Linux. But on my desktop PC (a Dell machine with an i7 processor), from the same year, it works fine with tensorflow. Before Siril integrates Starnet, I discovered this after a lot of research. You make life so much easier for astrophotographers with your videos. Tks!😉
Yeah hard to get rid of them when they still work. Thanks man! Appreciate that!
Thanks Rich ! Great find and explanation .
Very welcome! Thanks
Brilliant- saved me hours trying to get my MeLe to run Starnet. Pity there’s no warning on the download site.
Glad it helped you out! Yeah, given the amount of people that have this issue it would be nice to call it out on their site.
perfect. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Well there it is. Thank you, very helpful. Disappointing, but helpful. Great videos, I just discovered your channel. I'm learning a lot!
Yeah it's unfortunate for those that have the issue, but at least now we know. Thanks!
@@DeepSpaceAstro is there a way to use StarNet functionality outside of Siril? I noticed a Windows GUI.
Yep. That version runs stand-alone and you load a tif. file into it.
Wow, once again THANK you. For once it’s not “operator error” Found it to be working on a newer pc
I feel way mo betta
On to stretching starless images
Thanks again
Yeah it was confusing a lot of folks so don't feel bad. Thanks!
Hi Rich. I always find your Siril videos helpfull and well done. I have been using Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization with mixed results as I am not entirely sure how to use the tool. Any chance you could do a video about it?
You mean like this? ua-cam.com/video/LfxXtCB074Y/v-deo.html 😉
well, yeah sort of like that LOL. Dont know how I missed that one. I guess with only two sliders, I must have been doing it right, just wanted to know if there was any quantitative method.....but I'll just keep playing with the sliders..Keep the good vids going @@DeepSpaceAstro
Hello, any ideas for walking noise in postproduction? I have 8hours od material without guiding and dithering 😢
I don't sorry. Last year I tried to correct the same issue with Photoshop. I got it out of the background but couldn't remove it from the dso.
@@DeepSpaceAstro ok thanks 😅
Quick question. I do my up front processing in Camera Raw and starnet outside of SIRIL. Can I just place the stars only image in SIRIL and run Full Resynsthesis? When I did that it did make the wonky stars round. Found over 17000 stars. Saving the file as a TIFF in Linear Mode it shows maybe 3 stars on the whole screen in Photoshop . In AUTOSTRETCH mode in SIRIL the screen was covered in nice round stars. Leaving it there it saves the file but gives you a message on saving about not being in LINEAR Mode. Either way I get almost no stars in Photoshop. I hope I don't have go and do all the processing in SIRIL. FYI my Starnet does work fine in SIRIL. Just faster for me to do the up front stuff outside of SIRIL.
The warning is just that, a warning. It's letting you know what you see in Auto Stretch mode is not what is going to be saved. So whether you save from Linear or AutoStretch, the results will be the same (Linear view) when opened in PS. When you open it in PS are you doing a curve stretch to bring out the data?
@@DeepSpaceAstro I went back into Photoshop with the black image and used both curves and levels and it did bring back the nice round stars...... Thanks for this....
I just had this issue the other night. I pointed to the starnett directory within Siril, And then pointed to the Starnett Exe within that folder.
Seems work fine, rather than just pointing to the whole folder that contains the exe.
Yep and that's the correct way to configure Starnet by pointing to the executable.
@@DeepSpaceAstro had an older version of Siril running and I had to open the exe window separate to get it to work but the latest seems good now.
When I move the rgb_test5 to the StarNet++.exe file I get the code execution cannot proceed because vcruntime140_1.dll was not found. It says reinstalling the program might fix the problem but it doesn’t . My laptop does run avx2
Download and install the MS Visual C++ Redistributable: learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170
Thank you sir! I don’t know what that was (I am not that computer savvy) but it did the trick for me. I am just starting out with photos from Backyard Astro, to see if this hobby is of interest to me. Because of your help I am hooked on this. Now I just have to figure out an alternative to Photoshop as it is a subscription based program. Once again, thank you so much your videos are fantastic.
You're welcome! A good, free alternative to Photoshop is GIMP. www.gimp.org/
@@DeepSpaceAstro This worked for me too thank you very much you are a star
My amd rizen 7 does have the instruction set but still crashes
This is covering a different issue with the option not being available. Not sure about why yours would crash?
when I try to select the executable in Siril it tells me I don't have permissions. I don't know how to fix this and I am on Mac, could anyone point me in the right direction?
I'm not a Mac user, but I'm pretty sure you need to follow the tip here in the documentation: siril.readthedocs.io/en/stable/processing/stars/starnet.html
@@DeepSpaceAstro hey dude! I really appreciate the response. I actually found this page like 30 minutes after commenting. I definitely messed it up last night but was also exhausted lol. Gunna try again today (I am BRAND NEW to Mac’s so it’s been a journey). I appreciate you taking the time to link this for me. I just started AP and am learning and there’s a pretty steep curve it feels like.
Yeah the learning curve can be steep, but you'll get it and then wonder why you thought it was so hard in the beginning.
Can manage to integrate SN on mac..
Can or can't?
Not having such an error, but i do have some issues with StarNet being absolutely incredibly slow on my PC, i.e. at least 10 min to process a single frame (from a sequence). This is a very new(ish), i.e. 1 year old, top-of-the-line gaming PC bought specifically for processing (i'm not really into gaming). The only ''warning'' i get is: ''with the current memory and thread limits, up to 1 thread(s) can be used''. StarNet (used stand-alone) was much faster on my ancient (and now defunct) Surface Pro 3 table. Would there be any solutions in Siril for speed optimization?
Siril just makes a call out to Starnet, so there are no settings that I'm aware of that can increase performance directly. Run the drag/drop test I show in the video and see if the times are the same. The warning you mention may be related to the number of threads you have set. Look in the top-right corner of the screen where it says Mem & Disk Space. You can adjust the number of threads in the box to the right of those two items. You can also tryu adjusting the amount of memory Siril uses in the Preferences | Performances.
@@DeepSpaceAstro Thanks for the reply, much obliged! I checked, it says 1.7 GB (out of 64 GB), 32 threads and 1.7 Gb disk (SSD). I allowed Siril to use 0.9 of all memory. Nothing else is running, just Siril/StarNet. I also did the drag/drop test: it was lightning fast. As of right now (+4.5 hrs) StarNet is still processing (and still has about 23% more frames to process). Very odd behaviour...
I found discussions about something similar happening in Pixinsight and how to improve speed, but i'd rather stick to Siril for now since your tutorials are excellent for someone delving for the first time into DSO processing.
That is strange. Not sure what could be causing the slow down. I'd post the issue in their forum and see if they've seen it before.
thanks for info and bad news. so much for my ancient i7 860 @ 2.80GHz
Yeah I know it's disappointing, but at least you know the reason why now.
@@DeepSpaceAstro true. It was driving me nuts lol Thanks again
I found out my cpu is too old for starnet lol. Great explanation though.
Yeah that's too bad. This stuff changes so fast.
@@DeepSpaceAstroI have to upgrade anyways, just began astrophotography less than a week ago with very good results but my stars always get bloated due to stretching. Just grabbed my 5 year old laptop and tried it and got so confused as to why it wouldn't work.
@@lazy_panda_plays9970 Only 5 years old? Did you verify what I covered in the video? It could be something else.
@@DeepSpaceAstro yeah I get the same error code and I looked up my CPU and found out it does not support avx sadly.
Great video thanks for showing the Hardware Info tool. This problem of not finding Starnet executable can also be caused by needing to install latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. You posted that solution on AstroBin. That fixed my problem on Windows 10 machine. 😊
i have a core i7 cpu that supports avx2 but i cannot get starnet to work in siril
What are you seeing? Error message of any kind?
@DeepSpaceAstro siril can't find starnet executable. That is strange because in preferences, missalanious it shows starnet ++ in the correct place. In advance I really appreciate you taking your time to help me. Ken
@@kenhodgson4711 Are you sure you downloaded the command line version of Starnet? Also what happens if you test Starnet like I showed in the video?
Definitely downloaded the command line version. Checked cpu on line and also downloaded program, both show avx2 in cpu. Ken
What i meant by testing is dragging and dropping the tif on the exe. Does that work?
My pc crashes everything when i try to run starnet
Any errors? Can you drag and drop the test image like in the video?
@DeepSpaceAstro no errors just shuts pc down ! I've got it working on another pc next to it so that will have to do
