    Wow - thanks Nick. I watched other videos about the GHS and never could manage to get it to preform the way I knew it could. Following your walk through changed that. I just reprocessed data from M92. I was trying to not blow out the core, and had even tried two stretches and a layer/blend in GIMP (kind of worked) - but working through it while watching helped tremendously. I am now Team GHS. :)

    Camera's are generally more sensitive to green, the red and blue need to be boosted to get a basic whitebalance, when only the green channel is over exposed/clipped the boost in the red and blue channel produces a magenta-ish color, this isn't always noticeable because the highlights generally get compressed but if you apply an algorithm that boosts color in the highlights then the magenta-ish color also gets boosted. Maybe the siril dev's could implement highlight reconstruction like in darktable, it's open source and very effective in fixing over exposed point light sources.

    I'm loving GHS, Starnet integration and the much-improved deconvolution tool. The only letdown for me is the noise reduction - it just does not work well at all on colour images. (To be fair, the developers acknowledge that in their documentation). If they can solve that and maybe add some masking options in the future, then Siril will have everything I need.

  • @davidforcier4
    @davidforcier4 Рік тому +5

    Concerning the pink stars, for what I come for my researches, it's related to a mismatch between bit-rate of the source image files and the resulting stacked image. For example, in my case, I do astrophoto with a Nikon camera which provides 14 bits raw files, but PixInsight's and Siril's stacked images are 16 or 32 bits, By consequences, we get a saturated 14 bits color translated into a soft non-saturated 16/32 bits, which results into that pink.

    • @shekibobo
      @shekibobo Рік тому

      Very interesting. Any way to fix it?

    • @davidforcier4
      @davidforcier4 Рік тому +3

      @@shekibobo Never really found a real fix, but my processing steps allowed me to get around the issue.
      I extract the stars in a separated image while still being in linear mode, and I stretch them just over the point where the pink turn white, but they remains under-stretched compared to the seep-sky image, so they remain smalls. This way has also the benefits to avoid star reduction because under-stretched stars are not as large as the full-stretched ones, so no need to reduce them over :)

    Just discovered this software, its amazing. im able to remove Coma aberrations, this opens the door for a lot of great fast lenses to become excellent astro lenses. One of the best affordable fast 24mm lenses around is a used Nikkor 24mm f1.4g. It would make an awesome milky way lens but there is some coma aberrations in the corners. That was never a dealbreaker for me on milky way shots since the stars are
    Small, but many people don’t like it. Now you can fix it. I wonder how many other great fast lenses are out there which people have previously overlooked.

  • @Butzemann123

    the reason for the pink star cores is the color calibration. It turns white into (bright) pink. With conventional stretching this would be no problem, since the star core gets stretch until its burned out again.

    Great tips for how to use GHT. I was playing with the developer version, for awhile but kept going back to v1.06 - your video prompted me to try this new beta, what a difference! First glance two things I checked on - they must have finally recompiled with current Libraw because Siril now supports Olympus/OMDS OM-1 raw files that it never did (YAY!) I'd guess there may be some other newer raw support in there, too. And it looks like they fixed the swap storage problem (at least on MacOS) so it reads the actual free disk space instead of some crazy low number that would cause it to fail processing for lack of space, when there was plenty left. Just keeps getting better!

    If you run each binary from the terminal beforehand, then macOS security will ask you if you allow the binary to run, so it is a good practice to first run the binaries from the terminal to then allow them to run on macOS System Settings, and then set the binaries on Siril, so you'll not have any security warning issues.

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  Рік тому +1

      Hi Fred, unfortunately, there seems to be a bug in the Windows build of this new beta version of Siril. There is a workaround posted towards the top of this post: siril.org/download/2023-02-24-siril-1.2.0-beta1/ that you may want to try out.
      For the halos issue, Starnet shouldn’t be creating any halos that weren’t already in your data, but it can make them appear more visible since the stars are removed. Once you add the stars back in they shouldn’t be any more noticeable than they were before, and I actually think they can be much easier to minimize without the stars if you are open to using some tools like clone stamp in photoshop or gimp. Cheers, Nico

      Yes, it's an alternative. I wouldn't call it a replacement as it doesn't do everything PixInsight does. But if you are new, Siril will give you plenty of options to get started. The things that PixInsight can do that Siril can't are not particularly important for a beginner in my opinion.

      I am starting year 3 in this hobby, and the only non-open source software I use is topaz denoise (although siril now has a denoiser so I might not even use that anymore lol) The point is, yes Pixinsight is the king of astro processing, it's well worth the money if you can afford it. But this open source stuff is getting pretty darn good, and you can produce very respectable images with it. Just remember to kick the guys that wrote it some cash every now and then. They do good work.

    You should really be proud of the videos you share and the way you make them. They are a real treasure for completely noobs like me. Any ideas why my stacked photos (taken with my Canon R6) have the RGB not aligned? I've checked your analysis on the stackers, and I've tried in ASTAP and DSS (here I have align RGB selected). Same results. I'm trying to get my first "final' picture and no luck. All horrible 😢

    Hello Nico thank you for the amazing tutorial ☺️. I have a question about the blending mode of the stars and starless layers. You said in the last video you uploaded that it's possible to choose the blending mode thanks to pixelmath (you also showed the formula). But I can't understand in which part of the process should be done. Thank you again for the effort you put in your video❤️

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  Рік тому +1

      This new Star Recomposition tool in Siril shown in this video basically replaces the need to do this, but if you still want to use pixelmath to blend: 1. stretch (not a huge stretch, just a little) 2. Use Starnet++ to make a starless version 3. Stretch the starless version more 4. open pixelmath and use the formula to combine the stars and starless version. 5. continue editing with the combined version

    Is it 'better' to increase ISO or time to increase EV normally, and what might some exceptions be? I have a Canon 7DII so ISO up to 6400?

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  3 місяці тому +1

      Without a tracker: try high ISO, 3200 or 6400 and time is based on how long until stars trail.
      With a tracker: set ISO at a good balance point of read noise and dynamic range, usually 1600 for Canon. Then increase time until histogram in playback mode is 1/3 over from left.

    Thanks for demonstrating some of the new features in the updated version of Siril, Nico. Looks like some great improvements! So, unlike PixInsight, Siril is unable to read the embedded plate solving data in FITS files, is that right? (If I'm remembering correctly, the only time you have to use Image Solver in PI is when you're NOT using a FITS file. I could be wrong.) So, is there anything in Siril that you would recommend using in place of the processes in PixInsight, i.e., anything that's easier, more intuitive, or performs better? Thanks again for the update!

    I'm new to Siril and I'm getting descent results. I have 2 pretty basic questions: Siril creates many files in the process folder that seem to remain after processing is finished. Should Siril be deleting these files once processing created the results.fits is created? I assume that at that point, I can delete files. Is this is good assumption or do they have a follow on use in processing?

    • @NebulaPhotos

      They can be useful for diagnosing problems, and the calibrated lights can be used for multi night projects. Other than that, there isn’t much reason to keep them and these ‘intermediate files’ can be deleted.
