As a former member of the Mormon church, I have been eagerly awaiting this film. I have to say that I agree almost completely with your review. They kind of lost me when they brought in the "prophet". The worst part of that to me was, the bodies were presumably switched when they were at the top of the stairs yelling for the other missionary who was looking for them. Mr. Reed would have no idea that that man would have shown up to allow this distraction. It showcases the very dangerous situations that the Mormon church, and I'm sure others, put their missionaries in. Generally speaking, Mormon missionaries are kids...18-20 years old. There are all kinds of horror stories of things that have happened to the missionaries. I'm sure many of them would make for some good movies! The two actresses are former members of the Mormon church as well. I loved the fact that they were able to bring in accurate mannerisms and language which made it very authentic. On the whole, I enjoyed the movie. I just wish it had stayed in the same vein that it started with.
Are we in an era of reverse psycho biddy / hagsploitation era where former leading men heartthrobs are now starring as crazy older men in psychological horror films?
I went to see it today. I thought it was intelligent and well acted. I took the butterfly at the end to mean that she lost her faith but I could see the part about her being dead, too.
Man, if you haven't seen The Undoing on HBO, it's incredible. It's Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman as a New York power couple, he's a world-renowned pediatric oncologist who's accused of murdering his mistress. Hugh Grant gives one of the best performances I've ever seen towards the end of that show.
I thoroughly enjoyed the religious debates in the film. That kind of stuff gets me going. I didn't think about it at first, but I do see that her piecing everything together was a stretch. I also questioned how they didn't hear the bodies being switched. From the table and chair being moved, an emaciated person moving a dead body, opening the trap door, the thud from the body being thrown in (because she's be too weak to carry a body down a ladder), and then everything being put back together. How did neither of them hear that? All in all, I did enjoy the film and would recommend it. 3.5/5.
One time my father in law was telling us about a movie he was excited to see. He kept saying it starred Hulk Hogan. I was so confused and my husband turned to me and quietly said he means Hugh Jackman. Anyway, I just went to go see Heretic. I think Jackman did a great job.
This movie’s trailers make it look interesting to me, which is unusual. 5:58 Oohh! Topher Grace- the only non-dirtbag from That 70’s show- love that for him
@ it’s not just the younger men; Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp both wrote letters to the judge on behalf of Danny Masterson after he was convicted of r&pe.
Great video review as always. Ngl, this is what I wanted the movie Martyrs to be just because I adored how they explored all the themes presented here and, to me, it never felt like they were choosing a side. It was all about how you perceive the movie's events yourself, I think. Big fan.
i love love love this concept and can't wait to watch this. i hope you both can do more psychological thrillers in the future. I love how Nick knows where these concepts come from so he sees the through line. I will always love Joseph as well. If I may make a request for more of the same please.
I liked your thoughts:) I agree that the basement didn’t feel as strong as the first part of the movie, but the ending…I think the butterfly was a clue that Sister Paxton actually died, because there’s no way the other sister survived the throat slash and the rest was just the crazy stuff our brains do when we die, “going into the light”, and as a viewer we have to choose belief or disbelief about what actually happened. The nature of reality butterfly 🦋. And the phone still said “no signal” even when she went outside…
I really wanted it to make more sense or be more about the religious historical angle than just normal male degeneracy. He could have made an argument that all those religions are inverted/satanic and then went about his business based on that.
I'm surprised more missionaries, do not get into crazy, deadly situations. There are so many crazy people in the world. I'm sure this film will give some sicko ideas. But i am surprised more crazy stuff doesnt happen to missionaries. Unless they do, and im just not aware. 🤔 Anyway, good review as always.
Come on, this movie won't give people any ideas they wouldn't have otherwise. There have been missionaries going on these for 2 years for how long? The face of the church in current media is almost exclusively young, attractive women. The church is behind this film...what does that say about how comfortable they are about that possibility? It's a risk they take to serve God and they do have many safeguards this film may or may not realistically depict.
@carlao7157 Convinced by what? You want to believe people are good to exist in harmony is one thing. It has nothing to do with convincing. You treat people fairly based on their actions.
@razorbeard6970 based on the evidence......most of.the time and in most situations everything is fine. OP is surprised more bad things dont happen...due to over estimating bad people
So the ending… my theory is that the butterfly is actually Sophie. Remember, Chloe mentioned she wanted to visit her loved ones as a butterfly on their finger tips after death and I think Sophie did that once she FINALLY dies. 👀
I'm so happy yall mentioned Martyrs because I also felt themes of that film and movies like The Box or even Escape Room. I saw it last night and enjoyed all the performances but similarly I did understand what Hugh Grant's character was describing because I took world religions in High School. But I did enjoy this movie
I saw this at Fantastic Fest, where it was a secret screening. Everyone I saw this with had a blast with it! Also, without spoiling, this movie does to The Hollies’ The Air That I Breathe what American Psycho did with Hip To Be Square, Reservoir Dogs did with Stuck In The Middle With You, Beetlejuice did with Jump In The Line, and so on.
It definitely gave me theology class feels lol. I liked the debate aspect. Hugh Grant ended up being the fanatical one. Controlling the narrative and his belief by force. The pie and locked up half dead women is where they threw me off.
Listening to you all talk about this movie is more pleasant than actually going to see the movie. Thanks for telling the storyline and all the interesting aspects, including the directions it should have gone. You’ve saved my time, energy and money. In fact, you’re better than the movie, because I might have walked out and w you I can continue to listen.
I agree. I thought the movie fell apart closer to the end. Sister Paxton noticed the body was in the wrong position after they came back and she followed Sisters Barne’s order to challenge him. The ending was put together in a Scooby Doo way but I think it was in the theme of control. Paxton had faith in Barnes even after death.
Clearly I'm in the minority here but I liked the film. It was nice to see women of any faith being smart and resourceful. Yes them being Mormon made me sceptical but I actually felt they were handled with care. Granted, I'm agnostic so maybe I just don't understand.
I like how as you breakdown each weirdly setup 'anxious scenes' for the duo, you don't quite say how you felt for them😉- clues that they are the "family friendly" stereotypical "horror"😀
It’s my guilty pleasure going to the movies and coming back and watching y’all review ❤ I really enjoyed this movie It was very disturbing because at the end I felt like the movie was trying to make you question if religion is just make believe or if it’s real. The butterfly scene was chilling to everybody in the theater was frozen. My favorite part was when he was breaking down how all these gods were born “December 25th” way before Jesus Christ was here, yet here we are people still celebrating “Christmas “ for Jesus … like gurl 🙃 Thanks for the review 3/5 is a spot on review
Everyone is a critical thinker when it comes to topics that are not precious to their core identity such as religion. That's why Paxton had no problem putting the pieces together after Barnes had died. Also, consider that the ending was meant to be intentionally ambiguous, because as with the general motif from the film, when left with unknowns it becomes easier to believe whatever makes you feel comfortable. Create your own explanation as to what the ending really meant. For me, I think the fact that the butterfly did not fly away but rather disappeared tells me that sister Paxton had been having a near-death hallucination and Barnes had never woken up; She had died, and so did both herself and Mr. Read. But, like I said, interpret it anyway you like. That's what I think makes the ending brilliant.
I really liked it. I thought it was a thoughtful film and provoked what you’re talking to believe versus what do you actually practice what you preach?
To a degree but ultimately I don't think he cared whether they practiced what they preached or not, his whole point was to show them that religion is all about control. What he was doing to them he believed was the "one true religion."
I felt like Regina King in Scary movie in the theater 🤣🤣 whole time I’m yelling “beat his a**” 🤣🤣🤣 I woulda sat in the living room til morning! I enjoyed the movie. Very similar premise to Martyrs. Allegedly the directors say the ending is apart of the twist. When the old lady described her near death experience, that’s what we see after Mr.Reed and baby girl are bleeding in the end. She is going on to the other side… so the friend coming back wasn’t really happening…. idk… definitely a lot to think about.
what she said about the butterfly and then that ending with the sun shining behing her, it reminded me of Winter light, the Bergman movie..when the end of the movie is the end of his faith too...I think that might have been the what the director tried to pull off. I don´t know...
Spoilers* I thought it was very strong, very thoughtful, although I agree it started stretching at the later stages. I kind of wished it really really leaned more into the simulation theory but, it was very obvious it was a trick - I wished it went harder on that and made it more difficult to disprove -- it seemed like all of a sudden Cloe East's character instantly transformed into his intellectual equal, without earning it fully at that point. But I guess it was to show that she was smarter than she seemed, and the cutesy bubbly stuff was more out of respect for others, and not challenging their authority? William Friedkin's movie Bug did that very well by the end, where I kind of felt like I was losing my mind a bit hehe, I feel like I could of got there if he started going off about some really strong conspiracy theory, also I wished there was more comedy, there were little chuckles here and there, but I wish Hugh Grant got a bit goofier.
I thought a better story would have been that Hugh Grant had captured a demon (a lá "The Twilight Zone" episode "The Howling Man) and was going to sacrifice the girls to the one true religion of Satan.
That would have made a better horror story. For a second I did think it was going to turn out Huge Grant's character was some kind of satanists. Then when he brought out the woman prophet then I thought he was going to claim some ancient matriarchal religion as the one true religion especially because of the whole Monopoly thing being originally invented by a woman. But philosophically I can see why this movie went the way it did but ultimately I think it should have done more to counter his viewpoint. Most people are going to walk away thinking it was the message the movie wanted to get across despite the fact that he was a complete psychopath.
I thought maybe satanism/rebellion/atheism kinda spin was going to be it. Then I thought just as there is variants of Jesus there is also Satan so I don’t think that would have been it.
As someone who grew up a Mormon and a skeptic, I’m so excited to see this. Missionaries to me always seemed intimidating, but the older I’ve gotten the more I see them as young and clueless 20-somethings. I don’t see them often, but I’ve made it clear as long as they don’t try to give me lessons, they’ll have a hot meal and unmonitored internet access. I was already baptized years ago, so it’s at no loss to them.
If you guys watch Small Things Like These, begging y'all to read the novella it's based on first. It stayed true to the book, the movie is very well received in the UK and Ireland probably because they're familiar with the story. Y'all need a bit of context to fully get it.
It was ok. I wanted the house to be more of a maze where if they did the wrong thing aka sin they would get to the next room and be given another choice until only one would be left and would have to do something unspeakable to get out which affects her mind adversely... and she ends up in an insane asylum or she deletes herself.
Did you say that you took the butterly ending as that Chloes character dying?? Because to me that was the other character signaling to her that shes okay on the other side, but it disappearing so fast was so she can still leave doubt.
It was good until the ending fell apart. Again the way she was piecing everything together was too scooby doo. You can be observant but still not be able to make the connections she was making. The character was too smart and I think everyone dies in the end
No one thought the butterfly was the other sisters spirit visiting her? She literally said when she passes she’s going to come back as a butterfly and land right on her loved ones fingers so they know it’s really her.
the movie really fell apart at the end considering how detail was seemingly supposed to be such a large element to this ... the part where the two slave wifes traded places how can we believe the slave woman who can barely walk moved the table lifted a heavy door picked up a dead body somehow brought her down the chute and then carried her about 15 feet in the tunnel climbed back up shut the door moved the table back in place all in about 30 seconds (with nobody hearing anything) Yeah no sorry...this was pretty stupid...also why or how she threw up blueberry pie after she pretended to be resurrected when she wasn't even the one who ate the pie is kinda stupid after the fact. The movie was pretty good leading up to that point but those last few scenes destroyed the momentum they built up to that point.
Sophie reminded me if Anya Taylor Joy and Emily Browning had a baby. I gave this movie a 5/10. I was also a little hungover when watching it so I was getting easily annoyed. 1. When that bully girl pulls down her skirt and is not punched in the tits by anyone? 2. They weren't scrambling to kill this dude 3. The sudden change in Paxton's character from meek follower to Sherlock Holmes Velma brainy final girl. This is a slow burn religious film almost like The VVitch, however, the faith shown here seems surface level while in The VVitch feels so real and lived in.
Message fell flat. Like, duh. Every time your mother makes you feel guilty is a form of control. We didn’t need a 2 hour movie learn that about humans. This topic needs more nuance that feature film can’t get into without boring half the audience.
Keep in mind Hugh Grant's character is the villain. The message of the movie typically doesn't come from the villain. That's the distorted view that the movie ultimately seeks to counter. Although I would criticize the movie for not countering that message very well. We do get a little tidbit from Chloe's character about the benevolence of religion through prayer and that it's nice to have someone who cares about your pain enough to pray for you regardless of its material effectiveness.
“You mean Hugh Grant? That’s what I would say”. Joseph - you did 😂😂😂 love you both!! 💛
Haha...loved that
him doing that like a minute prior and neither caught it i laughed
Was bout to say he definitely said it before him..😂
He says Hugh Jackman I laughed

Nick: “HERETIC!”
Joseph: o_o
Love that Hugh magically becomes Hugh Jackman at some point in in Joseph's head, and then it was contagious
Are we in an era of reverse psycho biddy / hagsploitation era where former leading men heartthrobs are now starring as crazy older men in psychological horror films?
Yes! Am I 😂 at Hagsploitation
Yes and I'm so here for it.
That's what I'm thinking!!! Hugh Grant, Channing Tatum, Josh Hartnett and James Mcavoy I mean what the hell man.
I thought she got away, and the butterfly represented her friend who saved her and died. I liked it quite a bit, and it made me think.
Joseph: 'are you saying Hugh Jackman? That's something I would do'
...you did do 😄
Yeah, you said it first! hehehehehe - I totally giggled at that but your whole review amused me so! "and more talking"
haha I saw that too!
Yeah! He said it first.
I think that Sister Paxton died praying and Barnes resurrection was just her hallucination and everything after. Idk
I'm on board with that conclusion
This was the best Hugh Jackman role since The Whale
🤣
Yaaaay I came to see if you two had done a Heretic review! 🎉
I went to see it today. I thought it was intelligent and well acted. I took the butterfly at the end to mean that she lost her faith but I could see the part about her being dead, too.
I already got my tickets for Friday. I love that Hugh Grant has been in his villain era since A Very British Scandal.

I assume they switched while the girls were screaming
@lukaj679 possible, but the question still stands. It's a plot hole.
One time my father in law was telling us about a movie he was excited to see. He kept saying it starred Hulk Hogan. I was so confused and my husband turned to me and quietly said he means Hugh Jackman. Anyway, I just went to go see Heretic. I think Jackman did a great job.

Hello enjoying your content like always...so happy to see the chanel grow

As an ex-Jehovah’s witness, this movie had me gripped from the word go. The debates & existential questions were hitting for me.
I’m looking forward to watching this. Hugh Grant in his dark/villain era is golden
Oh I needed this today! Thank you loves! ❤️
i love love love this concept and can't wait to watch this. i hope you both can do more psychological thrillers in the future. I love how Nick knows where these concepts come from so he sees the through line. I will always love Joseph as well. If I may make a request for more of the same please.
Can I just say how reassuring it felt to come across this video in my feed, with both of them grinning and seeing that it was posted after Tuesday.
I was super engaged with this movie tonight, but the ending wasn’t all that great, especially with the reveal of the One True Religion
M Night Shyamalan doing a family friendly “Martyrs” has me intrigued 😂

I really wanted it to make more sense or be more about the religious historical angle than just normal male degeneracy. He could have made an argument that all those religions are inverted/satanic and then went about his business based on that.
Been waiting for this one, guys!!! LET’S GO!!💜💜💜

I sooo want to watch TV his review but I promised myself a no spoiler watch for this movie 😅
No one thought the butterfly was the other sisters spirit visiting her? She literally said when she passes she’s going to come back as a butterfly and land right on her loved ones fingers so they know it’s really her.
The dark haired sister didn't say that. The one that "survived" said it. Which leads to the question of did she actually survive or not.
I just know I'm going to like this movie 😊
I love Arabian Nights. Go watch it if you haven’t seen it.
Did you guys get blueberry pie 🥧
the movie really fell apart at the end considering how detail was seemingly supposed to be such a large element to this ... the part where the two slave wifes traded places how can we believe the slave woman who can barely walk moved the table lifted a heavy door picked up a dead body somehow brought her down the chute and then carried her about 15 feet in the tunnel climbed back up shut the door moved the table back in place all in about 30 seconds (with nobody hearing anything) Yeah no sorry...this was pretty stupid...also why or how she threw up blueberry pie after she pretended to be resurrected when she wasn't even the one who ate the pie is kinda stupid after the fact. The movie was pretty good leading up to that point but those last few scenes destroyed the momentum they built up to that point.
I liked this movie and heard a lot of good reviews about it
As an exmormon I enjoyed it 4/5
Sophie reminded me if Anya Taylor Joy and Emily Browning had a baby.
I walked out the second i saw those 2 huge candlesticks and these ladies dont think to grab them and bash his brains in.
The purpose was to push them to keep making excuses for their religion rather than be truthful
Hugh grant 😂😂😂 not jackman
Omg so excited for this ❤❤❤❤
did i hear hugh jackman?
Please watch .I was not disappointed.
I thought Haunt was surprisingly good.
I really liked Haunt as well

❤❤❤
Who else, every time the word "missionary" is pronounced is thiking something else than a religion? Xd
One girl sweet the other girl is goth
