I saw this flick back when it first hit the theaters in June of 79 and scared the shit out of me.I met Angus years later at local Horror convention one of the nicest people you could me even gave me free autograph.
Dan S you're so lucky! I wish I could've had the chance to meet him. This movie scared the hell out of me as a kid. R.I.P. Angus Scrimm, thank you for the nightmares. You will never be forgotten :'(
Yeah, it’s often surprising when a celebrity who played someone scary is so nice, isn’t it? Take Bill Skarsgård in “IT”, for example. Guy would often apologize to his younger co-stars between takes.
man this flick was intense.saw it prob 25 times. anither cool onexm was assault on precinct 13.goin way back to when cinemax was taking off . before showtime even came out
And the special effects where applicable can be forgiven if you're used to the modern age. It makes them stand out whereas these days a lot of the special effects/CGI are overdone.
Probably because and just saying I don’t watch many horror nor like a real critic but maybe the reason old horror movies were good was they acted normal like sure they had their tropes but it felt like they were real people who just wanna have fun.
The special effects and the cinematography in the original 1979 (!!!) film are absolutely brilliant and WAY beyond their time! Phantasm is one of the greatest horror films I've seen.
I think John carpenter made the original halloween for like 300k. I might be wrong. But to think coscarelli made this movie with far less money more practical effects than halloween and his mother as the costume designer!!
I came to watch the trailer to clear my six year old trauma. Lol. I had nightmares for a while after it. It’s amazing how much I remembered from it . I talked my grand mom into letting me watch it. 🤣. She should have said no!
Modern horror films seem to be more geared towards being disturbing, or merely entertaining at the the most. I `m glad i was born to gaze upon posters like these, if not upon on my bedroom wall, but on a cinema illuminate poster i shall remember forever x
I remember staring at the posters around that time. Esp The Dark or Dawn Of The Dead. I wondered what happens in these movies? The answer was just as terrifying...
really? how? so , its aliens and they kill people , to make them into dwarf slaves. but not really It was just a dream , but not really it wasn't a dream. but actually its all just a metaphor for something...
Why is that funny? This was before videotape was everywhere. Theaters would bring back movies after their initial release as double features, or just rerun them. "Halloween" came out in 1978 and it was re-released in theaters in October of 1979. "Star Wars" ran for about 2 years straight. Totally different era.
It made the rounds later in 1980 when AVCO re-released it as a double feature with The Fog. There is actually a trailer on UA-cam that features both movies.
@@JeevesReturns it's late 70s , what do you expect? But better than a lot of the cheese fest we get these days. The special effects of the 70s/80s/90s were great. I've never watched this film, I only discovered it yesterday when I wasn't even looking for it, but it is highly rated and amongst all the other horror classics.
Director /writer did an amazing job. This flick was definitely based on someones fucked up nightmare... and it even feels like your in a dream.+ With the late 70s/early80s feel, and budget gives it special creepy/melancholy nuances that make it unique and stick with you forever.
One of my childhood movies, I didn't know the name, so I started asking in horror movie groups, just with the description of the balls and I'm here. I'm so happy.
I totally agree! I also really like the one for the original Black Christmas that goes like: "...If this movie doesn't make your skin crawl, then it's on too tight!"
I came to watch the trailer to clear my six year old trauma. Lol. I had nightmares for a while after it. It’s amazing how much I remembered from it . I talked my grand mom into letting me watch it. 🤣. She should have said no!
I like the trailers for the films, because of the music, the awesome camera effects, and other reasons. Watch all the trailers for the five films! You'll see what i mean.
I remember seeing the cut-down trailer on TV (running at around a minute or so). I now see that at the end it's two zombies covering up the guy in the bed but for years I thought it was actually a pair of giant hands that burst up through the floor on either side of the bed to grab him.
This is one of those films that I wish I could watch for the first time again. It’s super creepy and keeps you on the edge of your seat, making you wonder what the heck is happening as you watch it for the first time. It may not be as iconic as ‘Alien,’ ‘The Exorcist,’ or ‘Carrie’ and other 70s horror films, but I enjoy it just as much as those classics.
I think this movie, like others that had a modest budget, will always stand the test of time. They didn’t have expensive effects money so they literally used mirrors and fishing string to make these awesome things happen. But most importantly, in order to make up for a movie without massive studio settings or fancier equipment, they had to rely on a good story, good characters, a timeless villain and of course.. a classic, scary, unforgettable theme song.

I loove those classic horror movies. They just have some vibe those modern horror don't have.♡
It’s the truth!
And they dont rely on those crap jump scares every 2 seconds

The sound quality of old analog equipment

I must've missed that bit
Best part of the movie

thought it was just a fantasy...
It's a classic
Phantasm where you’ll walk towards the camera for all eternity.
😂
IMO maybe the best musical score to any movie of all time. The most underrated Horror movie ever!
WHISPERED77 agreed! Finally picked this gem up on VHS!
WHISPERED77 shoot to kill! Or don't shoot at all!
I literally just looked this up as I’ve had the vinyl for years and love the tune but never knew what it was from ( blood stained yellow vinyl too 👌🏼)
Rest in peace Angus Scrimm..

I give it a triple AAA!
Nah not B rated, just Independent.
This movie scared the hell out of me when i was a kid. The sound track is surreal...still plays in my head after all these years
God, I remember seeing this trailer on TV, just before I joined the army and began my own horror story, lol.

5TH Grade 1980 that movie was all the talk among the boys in school, saw it on Showtime or HBO. BOY!.

Ah back when trailers were just a quick summary of the whole damn movie lol
Like it is today as well, actually ;p
well today its more explosions and random clips with no context here it simply lays out the whole story plot point by plot point lol
chaz Davis I don't think this trailer gives away the plot in anyway.
I totally agree! I also really like the one for the original Black Christmas that goes like: "...If this movie doesn't make your skin crawl, then it's on too tight!"
Even the trailer scares me because of the damn metal balls with spikes (later drilling into people's brains). I watched this way too young xD
RIP TALL MAN!!!! :(
Rest in Peace Angus.
As a teen I was too scared to even watch this back in ‘79!
Angus as the Tall Man is what made this so scary!
In my younger years this movie had me on the edge of my seat.

RIP Angus Scrimm.
Nothing beats THE 70’s
My favorite modern horror film. My favorite old-school film is the original The Invisible Man.
The film has a real MAGIC to it… it has a HUGE fan base…
