Kara and Nate I am a retired Federal worker. Always appeal any decision. Yes it takes time but an Appeal Officer looks at the case with fresh eyes and has a lot of leeway to resolve. Ask your person about your appeal rights. So sorry this has happened.

Kara & Nate, one thing you could continue to focus on is mini-docs about small towns in America that no one would ever know of. What are their interests, how do they operate on a small scale, what are their religious & political backgrounds, etc. Could be a really eye-opening experience to show how diverse and dynamic our country is, especially in a time of such clear divide. Regardless, you're gonna make it work and make all of us happy!
Edit: wow, glad to see so many people agree! Tl;dr - anyone can visit national parks, but only experienced storytellers like Kara and Nate traveling the country in a van can tell us stories we’ve never seen or could experience.

A better way to have handled it would have been to contact you and make you aware. Then you could have been proactive in finding out the laws and complying.

The national parks really, REALLY don't need any advertising. They're packed to capacity and then some, and it's been reported on that a lot of people who want to go to the parks can't (or can't go in certain areas/on certain trails) because they're so crowded they have to enter a lottery system to get permitted. What the parks need is funding, which has been cut repeatedly, and that's likely why they're trying to get people like UA-cam influencers - who make a lot of money of the parks - to pay them a fee. I think it makes sense, and it's fair of Kara and Nate to decide not to film there, but just as fair for the parks to fine people who make money off the parks.

Important to note: I've just read up on the rules for photographing inside a National Park - I'm a photographer and you had me concerned. You need a permit if you have a crew and if you need to have Park Services monitor your activity. Like taking a wedding couple into the park, or a magazine shoot etc. Landscape photography no problem, no permit necessary. So, 1 - consider to be creative with your stills and video storytelling. Second - Commercial Filming is defined in their words as intent to sell the footage. Your work is completely free to me. You are not selling any footage. Remember, you make money because You Tube runs ads and collects information, you are paid for ads - YOU DO NOT SELL YOUR FOOTAGE. You are non commercial people, you are journalists, very different in the legal definitions. Finally, Drones are not allowed anywhere in the National Park, at any time. The FAA license is only required if you intend to SELL YOUR FOOTAGE, or fly your drone for hire. If you aren't doing those things then you do not need an FAA license. I know bureaucracy can be a major pain - however, the person who reported you is wrong in their assessment of your activities.

They should be able to get like an all parks no heavy equipment permit for $500 or a quick at the door permit for like $30 per park. Something that makes it easy. The national park service is very strict about commercial filming. However, each park has different rules and it's not necessarily uniform across the board. I did a whole road trip series across the USA last year for a national TV network and I reached out to each park in advance. I didn't visit any of the ones that required a permit haha I only went to the ones that approved us to shoot on property without one.

Kara and Nate are just simple vloggers, yes they may have made money from the video but I doubt its even half the amount people actually make from filming a commercial video, and no they are not hypocrites for complaing they are just saying it that it was unexpected and that it could have blown way out of promotion and for them to film the videos they want to let us enjoy they have to deal with a lot of government issues and guidelines to be able to do so, which would prevent them from posting content for a while, it has also ruined there plans for the year which they have a an excuse to be slightly annoyed about as they had just got there plans for 2020 sorted and have then been told that cant happen anymore, if you where in there situation you would also be slightly upset to know one of your possible subscribers has reported you to the government ect and has gotten you in would could have been jail time. 1. Turn off monetization on all videos relating to any national parks to avoid being targeted as commercial filming

Completely agree. Plus whenever they traveled before they used to do some research whether drones are allowed or not and they followed it. The fact that they are 'at home' in US does not excuse them from knowing the rules. I also think that the fact that apparently they do not feel "fullfilled and excited' about visiting those unique, wonderful miracle of the nature places that are National Parks of Western USA unless they can film, for me means that they are incapable of appreciating the true beauty of those places. Some people go on few day isolated hike in those places and come back with memories and spiritual strength and calm that they never had - especially in those challenging times this kind of retrospective experience could be very enriching.... but sadly according to Kara and Nate it is clearly not worth it to put down the camera for once in a while.

While someone with a gopro can make thousands of videos off a single video so it really makes no difference the size of the camera. Just playing devil's advocate here but its true in the eyes of the government where they want a way to tax people who profit off something.

The National Parks are so heavily written about and vlogged, I see this an opportunity to elevate your content to other topics. Go visit the parks and keep the footage for your personal memories, but vlog the small towns and communities around the parks. We recently visited Glacier National Park. We spent three days in the park, but spent three days in the surrounding communities. Whitefish, Columbia Falls and Hungry Horse had some really cool little spots, and I'm sure the small business owners would be happy to have you. We spent six nights at Moose Creek RV Resort in their Airbnbs, and had the most amazing time & felt a part of someone's family. Most likely wouldn't have had that experience in park accommodations.

And while you're currently not interested in the permit and planning required for National Parks, maybe it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and apply. You might change your mind. It doesn't have to be an all or nothing proposition. You could mix up your content with some more planned excursions one you are properly permitted and also include some of the stories of the surrounding areas in a more freestyle form you are accustomed to following.

@@ChoketheLabel Kara and Nate are free to access the parks. They're not free to film there or fly their drones without proper permits, which are not automatically granted. Instead of looking at the blog through the lens of their camera, visualize yourself in an already jam packed National Park - they are all jammed - confronted at every turn by drones whizzing around you and camera set-ups; guerilla filmmakers staking out optimum spots for the best angles, often on dangerous terrain. MOSTLY on dangerous terrain. You're trying to get from here to there safely and somebody's creating a roadblock ahead of you until they get their shot. For me personally that's a bigger issue than profiting commercially off public property. I wish there were a way to regulate everybody using public land as a personal film set even if it's not for profit. But that is an issue as well. They are public lands and it is an actual issue to use them for personal profit. Believe me, the parks need no advertising/promotion. Not to mention is that the reason people visit national parks, to experience the intense intrusion of other people's film set ups? Not to mention in many places drones are detrimental to wildlife. The noise is disruptive, their presence can be dangerous. The guerilla film crews are always going to stake out the most dangerous, visually exciting, extreme locations and that is problematic for everyone. I live near a famous bridge. Last fall I walked across it, the first time in years, and found it absolutely jam packed with tourists, many of whom left the walking path and crawled onto the girders over the roadway so they could get the best shots. It was extremely difficult to even walk across the thing.
Larger film productions are easier to regulate. They have a specific schedule, are supervised and do the work with park service representatives on location with them.

The one thing the National Parks need is LESS advertising. All the vlogs filmed in National Parks are creating massive overcrowding, bumper to bumper traffic, and a Disneyland environment.

I think the National Parks should ban drones in the parks. The whiny , mosquito like noise of drones is obnoxious and goes against the idea that people are visiting the wilderness/natural world in the parks and it is rude to disturb it.

I was lucky to spend a few hours with you and could understand how things were shot and then how much time you must have spent cutting each shot and putting it together. While watching the video, no one can get what all you have to do get all the shots together. However, we all are here supporting and watching your videos. When one door closes another opens. This is a huge change right now to your channel, and a lot more work put on you guys. However, you will learn so much from this, take different roads/paths that you may not have taken otherwise and meet people that perhaps you never would have. SO We really dislike the person that did this, and honestly hope they find some happiness outside of the miserable hole they've dug for themselves (because let's not lower ourselves to their level) ) but also thank you because Kara and Nate will only grow from this and show us how resourceful, creative and amazing they can truly be! (though we already knew). Best of luck to you guys, you can only go up from here! I can't wait to see how you kick the butt of these issues!

I like this channel but everybody who is jumping at bashing the national Park service should understand that there is very much a second side to the story. I have worked in the national parks for 13 years. The emergence of smaller commercial entities such as UA-cam film channels has resulted in an explosion of filming and drone use in the national parks. Drone use in particular has been highly problematic because it represents both a danger to unplanned search and rescue flights, the general public and established scenic over flights. Additionally, drone use results in noise pollution. Without a special use permit join use it is illegal to fly a drone in every single US national Park. Those of us who have devoted our lives to the park system and conservation have seen the detrimental impacts of increased commercial use within the parks. I understand the frustration but please understand the side of the national Park service in this issue as well.

While the national parks are amazing, as someone who has travelled a lot in the US, the state parks are amazing, and under visited. I was actually a little sad when Great sand dunes became a national park, because now a lot of people visit it. So there is a TON for you to see without hitting national parks.

most people get 2 weeks off, the rest of the time they sit in traffic for 2 hours a day, get yelled at. The national parks allow anybody to have access to nature for $10 a day. When they arrive there, they do not want to see a filming crew that left all their garbage behind, that cut down a tree for a better shot. That used to happen a lot. Hence the rules. And national parks are so so so overcrowded now.

I suggest you provide your many followers with a National Parks phone number or email address that we can use to express our support for you. It's a shame that they'll be missing so many great parks but I doubt reaching out to NPS will help. For one thing, it's the federal government. Everything is rigidly regulated and federal employees usually do not have the discretion to grant waivers and exceptions. Also, the major National Parks don't really need to be promoted. For the big ones like Yellowstone or Yosemite if you want to stay in the park in an RV or a hotel you often need to book the lodging over a year in advance.
