The same about Lundy Island off the Devon coast in England. Although we say "If you can see Lundy Island it's going to rain, if you can't see it, it already is!"
So as a downtown Portland resident I appreciate the honesty from Kara and Nate about what the city looks like to a visitor. Running through downtown every day I see a lot of people experiencing homelessness and boarded up windows. The homelessness problem seems to be a long-term issue for a city that tries its best to give these people a shot but is dealing with a serious housing shortage. The boarded up windows are obviously a result of the BLM protests that hit the news and the prep for protests after the election. There are many of the streets on the east side of the river that are much more pleasant right now. Hawthorne, Division, Mississippi, and Broadway to name a few. Portland is definitely going through a lot right now but I guess I just wanted to emphasize that there's plenty of fun things to do around here despite the struggles we're going through. Side note... pretty freaking cool seeing Kara and Nate on the same waterfront path I run on basically every day! 😄
@@AC-uh6ce I admittedly don't know a lot about the history of the Chinatown area which Voodoo sits right at the border of...but it's been rough for at least a few years there.
On September 1, 2019 my wife and I came across Vlog #664... "Our TINY HOME IN THE SWISS ALPS". We were curious and continued watching a few more from the Switzerland series. The drama of the glacier crossing hooked us and we needed to see more. On September 7, 2019 we began our journey and started with FIRST VLOG EVER and went one by one through the "Watch From The Beginning" playlist. On November 1, 2020 we finally caught up and were able to watch this video the same day it was posted. After spending hundreds of hours with you two I wanted to thank you! Our travel wish list has grown as we learned about familiar (and unfamiliar) countries and saw what experiences each destination had to offer. Thank you for sharing the videos and we look forward to the next one as you continue your adventure.
That was before the oh poor me and I can’t do this and I can’t do that. I’ll hang out with a family and kids on a bike trip during a pandemic while others are being safe.
@@andysmithson4568 I wonder why you would thing the bike trip wasnt safe? I believe everyone was social distancing before the start of the trip and they were literally in nature with their own supplies and bathroom all the way through. Except for maybe a grocery trip that a lot of people do i didnt see them actually doing anything that is considered bad??
To be honest, that particular video with the ill advised and terribly planned glacier trip is DEFINITELY not one to try to emulate. That was not their best work along with a few other missteps last year that were incredibly dangerous. I think they're learning from their mistakes though
16:40 That path is the path my family has walked on to get to the beach since I was born. There's something awesome about seeing two people that you appreciate doing the exact same things as you do and deriving the same amount of happiness
as an Oregon native I'm glad you guys kept in the Portland clips and were honest about your visit. The city is going through a lot right now and you guys were there with open minds and brought some light to a very dark time in the city's history. I'm glad you enjoyed Voodoo Nate those apple fritters are my favorite. So happy the coast treated you guys well its definitely my favorite place to be!
I'm glad you took the bit out about Portland. From growing up in a city with a lot of poverty and social problems, my advice would be to acknowledge that the city is struggling (and acknowledge why and how it is struggling) but focus mostly on the positives, the changes taking place and the small businesses fighting in a tough environment.
@@brianleubitz I agree so much, lol. It’s not a bad part of town whatsoever. It’s just Portland. I was so confused when they said that. It’s a city with an incredibly poor infrastructure for houseless people.
I was in Portland a few years ago, and I had a great time walking around. It was good. I hope that the city overcomes whatever problems it is having now.
I’m pretty sure I was unknowingly 5 mins away from you most of the time while you were in Portland, which kills me. I wanted to thank you for re-recording your thoughts on Portland with the understanding of what is currently going on. As a city, we are going through a lot of change, hopefully for the better, which is even harder than normal because we have the eyes of the world on us. When it is safe to reopen everything I really think you owe to yourself to come back and see the splendor of our city. Also you haven’t even scratched the surface of what our city has to offer and you definitely need a local to show you around! My wife and I would be happy to volunteer. We’ve been following your travels since the trans Siberian train videos and we feel like we’ve seen lots of the world thanks to your videos. Have a great time in the PNW, and hopefully we can see you in our city again.
Change for the better in Portland? Hahaha. That's the funniest thing I heard in quite some time. Give major wheeler my regards... actually, scratch that.
Ted Wheeler, Antifa, BLM, the potential of seing a new rise of a "CHAZ/CHOP 2.0".. 100 days of riots, businesses leaving or going bankrupt.. Feel sorry for the decent people of Portland. But hopefully this will make people vote different there.
I agree! We’re going through a tough time right now and it really doesn’t represent the city right now. Everything happening is necessary and hopefully will lead to positive change. Outsiders truly can’t understand what is really going on and media isn’t properly portraying things. I’d love the chance to share them some of the great places to go as well! I think a lot of us locals definitely could have helped navigate things a bit better for them :)
@@PronatorsaurusTricepsus Yes, people protesting against fascism(I hope you know what that is before saying antifa) and for equity in the US to make it better for ALL people(BLM protests) is such a terrible thing for the US. I do hope people vote for change because America needs to keep up with the rest of the developing world.
The world's smallest park is also the only park that anyone is allowed to landscape, no permissions needed. Sometimes it has leprechauns, gnomes, Barbie pools.... a tiny amusement park. The reason for the park is all that land was donated...providing there was a park there....they forgot to specify a required size....so the land got used for everything but a park and sold off, roads were made and really this park is an insult to the guy who donated it. Fyi durring a pandemic (portlanders take seriously) they CLOSED down, and all the riots was a really.bad time to visit. But the homeless are also a deterrent all the time now. When you go east in the Gorge visit the full sized Stonehenge on the Washington side near Briggs. Fun, beautiful and free. Also be sure to detour by the falls and take old Hwy 30 adds 20 minutes to your drive but you will never do a prettier or more scenic drive in your life!
Kara My favorite Country you visited was Iraq. The Joy of all of the people that wanted to be included in your videos was amazing and something that is rare outside a group of children every once in a while. I'm happy you mentioned it in todays vlog, that made me smile and invoked this comment. safe travels kids
We met a really nice guy from Iraq in a hostel in Ukraine two weeks ago and he invited us to his home and we cannot wait to visit once the country opens. So amazing meeting people and changing the news stereotype.
@@goldenboyi1989 we do social distance. We are a married couple staying in private rooms. Trying to be as safe as we can and keep others safe too. Every hostel we have stayed in has been taking precautions to keep people safe. We met him in a common area and still kept social distance.
I have a college degree and am about to be homeless November 30th when my lease is up. I couldn't afford another lease somewhere else as I've been unemployed since May 💔 been selling all my belongings and trying to mentally prepare. My heart is broken. Praying for everyone struggling right now, no one deserves to be homeless.
Just FYI, that isn't the sketchy part of downtown, it's really close to where the Saturday Market is usually held, with live street music and tons of smiling faces but because of the unemployment rates a lot more people are homeless right now in Portland. I'm glad you found some places that made your visit worth it but I hope you will come back one day, when we are fully open, and get to see how cool it really is!
@@xDisturbed1 Detroit wasn't ruined by the people that lived there it was ruined by the corrupted government that was so far into debt they couldn't give enough to keep the city going. I've known plenty of people from that city, do you? It's sad when people visit a city during a pandemic and come to such a negative conclusion, it's worse when it's someone who's only read about them and decide to make such a hasty judgmental reply.
It’s not just Portland. All major cities look like that downtown right now, at least on the west coast. It isn’t dangerous unless you’re actively protesting one way or another. Homelessness is also a huge issue but it doesn’t mean that cities aren’t safe or sketchy. I’ve lived in Portland and I visited this summer to see for myself what’s been going on. People are practicing their right to free speech and some bad eggs get violent, that’s all that is happening. It’s not a war zone in the slightest. And the homeless aren’t out to get you, they have bigger problems to deal with. These are trying times for everyone. And thank you for saying your opinion so respectfully. Love you guys and keep up the good work!
I’m so glad Nate interrupted the video and, even though you didn’t have the best time of your lives, you didn’t let that negative perspective take over. I’m glad because I visited Portland about 2 years ago and had a blast. In fact, I made a special post on my social medias saying how happy I was for encountering what I described as “the nicest people in the US.” Everyone was extremely welcoming and did so much to help my friend and I when we needed information or anything else. Portland has a special place in my heart and I really hope they get back to being that happy & weird place they are! I also hope you both get the chance to visit the city again in a different time! ☺️
I really appreciate you guys realizing your own negative reactions and restating your opinions on the city before just posting. Much respect to you guys! ☺️
@@marig.8656 how about the people that have been killed in this city during the NO POLICE times??? violent crime up over 65%??? are those REAL LIFE CONSEQUENCES???
I still think it was quite negative with the edit. A lot of cities look like that these days. They just happen to film in Portland. They didn't address deeper issues but just wrote off the city. My family lives in and around Portland. Those in Portland have moved away temporarily due to all the unrest. Portland is definitely “weird” and there is a HUGE homeless problem. But the situation now, is truly unprecedented. You saw Portland out of its true state and at its worst. It can be a quirky, interesting city filled with foodies and people who love the arts and their books!
Thank you for taking the time to reflect and give a fairer assessment of your time in Portland. Portlanders and their city are toughing through turbulent times right now. I’m so happy you decided not to sugar coat the camera, but at the same time to process that experience, seeking understanding over judgement. "UNDERSTANDING over JUDGEMENT" L I B E R A L S P E A K for "please, don't notice that I have crapped myself".....the turbulent times you are going through are because of turning your city over to anarchists and MARXISTS...allowing for FOUR MONTHS of riots and people being punched in the face and beat into comas....and you want "UNDERSTANDING over JUDGEMENT"??? I have a brain and my understanding is that y'all go down in flames if someone doesn't take control of the situation and return Portland to civilization.

I guess the homeless camps and trash can be pretty shocking if you’re not from Portland. Many building downtown are boarded up because of riots that happen also every night. Portland used to be more lively and rich but there’s just not a ton of stuff you can do right now in downtown unless you work there because of COVID and the night protests or riots.
I understand your channel is a travel life vlog but It would have been a great opportunity to your explain to your viewers why Portland, especially downtown, is the way it is with protest and political unrest. You have a platform that you have created to help people not only enjoy your travels but educate and inform them.
The pandemic is actually the bigger culprit for that section. On top of a homeless situation that was already pretty bad before the pandemic. There are a lot of protests near me, and it doesn't look like that at all.
Portland was a dump long before the protests. We went there a couple years ago and almost everywhere we went the stench of vomit, urine and feces was overpowering.
So much respect to how ya'll addressed the Portland situation! It takes a lot of respect to not completely trash the city for how it is right now. I think you both did a really nice job addressing the whole situation. PS.... Voo Doo is the best (from an oregonian so good taste Nate)
My son lives in Portland and has been there for almost 10 years. He always stays away from downtown…before, during and after C19 and the upheaval. The outskirts of Portland are awesome.
In my experience with the Pacific Northwest, when the forecast calls for sunshine all day, it means, "sunshine with intermittent periods of rain," ha ha. When I lived in Vancouver (Canada, not Washington), nobody ever commented on the rain. Rain was unremarkable. They only ever commented when the sun came out, or when it snowed.
Dear Kara and Nate, My husband is Filipino-American, grew up in Oregon and before Covid, we go every year while based in the Philippines. As someone who loves Portland/Oregon, and as someone who lives in the Philippines and has traveled in places like Palawan, Boracay etc. Believe me when I say that in my own personal opinion, Portland is in the same level of love as I have for the Philippines and I think that's saying something. This year is not the best time to explore Portland but don't let that stop you from exploring it maybe in the future. In the same way that you did a do-over of Philippines because your 1st time was not good, give Portland another try next time.
Portland has been gross for the last couple years at least. We went there a couple years ago and almost everywhere we went the stench of vomit, urine and feces was overpowering.
The theme lives. All I can say is WOW!!! I would love to be that young, full of energy, invincible, full of innocence & the naivety of youth again. "That was wild" followed by "might not have been the best time to visit" was almost as good as the "some girl" reference after visiting the tomb of Eva "Evita" Peron in Buenos Aires. I love the adventure of seeing the world thru the eyes of two young, down to earth and honest young people. We need more young couples like Kata & Nate. Keep up the great work.
Aww, it's been years since I've been to Multnomah Falls. So awesome seeing the lovely OR through your eyes. It's one of my favorite places. Also, the reason the coast is so lovely is because the Oregon Parks and Rec Dept makes sure that the entirety of it remains public access. Good stuff!
I'm someone who has lived in Portland my whole life. I was so excited when I saw that you were coming through Oregon, but this video was disappointing. You visited one small part of Portland, the worst part right now, and didn't give the rest of the city a chance.

His vague and disjointed comments left my imagination to run wild and assume the worst. Nate made it seem like he was trying to be fair but which just made it seem so much worse. Sorry for you Oregonians - another kick in the gut.
My eyes literally welled up with tears when you were talking about Portland. I am a born and raised Oregon native and Portland has always been weird but beautiful. Sorry you didn’t have a great experience in Portland. We’ve lived here for years and it’s one of our favorite cities in the US. It’s true the downtown area is having a tough time but there are actually some great neighborhoods to visit and walk around. Portland has always been very much of a foodie city but Covid has reduced the options quite a bit unfortunately. If you come through again let us know and we’ll be happy to show you around. On the coast near Canon Beach, if it is open make sure to visit Ecola State Park, the views looking down the coast are spectacular.
Generally a fan of your content, and I'll keep watching. Just keep things in perspective: interacting with less fortunate people in other countries = cool and educating. Interacting with less fortunate people in your own country = scary and no time for it. Best to retreat to the winery!
totally thought the same... I like you guys (Kara and Nate) but I'm guessing since you've never been on the West Coast and maybe are from affluent areas that then Portland and the struggles they've been going through (and are in) was a shock to you. As always, you guys nailed the Portland situation. From the very beginning, you have always been so mindful in your influence here on the platform and keeping it real. It's important to highlight the good of a place... as well as the bad, especially during difficult times like these. Some cities are booming... some are hurting, and in this case, showcasing that will help people make really sound informed decisions on where not to go. One of the many reasons I love you both so much. ❤️
I’m from Portland, and I just want to say that I’m sorry you guys didn’t have a great Portland experience... So I just got back from Portland and I had a great time! Yeah, the downtown area is maybe a little grim right now, but there's a whole interesting and vibrant city outside of that. Idk, I just don't think any big American city is going to have that feeling that we want when traveling right now. It's just not the time.
Especially since it's October, Multnomah county is in a strict lockdown, and the city is in the aftermath of protests. Still a little confused by them calling the neighborhood VooDoo is in sketchy tho. 😜

I don’t know how you wouldn’t have known what has been going in Portland unless you’ve not read or seen the news in months. None of this is surprising if it you have been paying attention.
If you haven’t noticed they focus mainly on work and finding a place to stay so of course they wouldn’t know what’s going on and then covid happened. If this video offends or annoys you then take your negativity somewhere else
@Charlie Hunter how do you know they even watched the media. They have been traveling nonstop so I wouldn’t expect them to know everything that’s going on
@@Someone25875 First of all, I never said that it offended me, and I wasn't being negative. It was a genuine question as Portland and everything that has been going on has been in the news for months. Secondly, they've been traveling in the US, not foreign countries. Thirdly, they live their life on social media, and the internet, so I find it incredibly hard to believe that they didn't run across anything in all this time. Finally, experienced travelers that they are, I would have expected a little more research on the area than just where to find doughnuts.
We did the Oregon Coast in June. It is such a stunning place. Watching the sunset on a beach with no one else but my hubby is one of those magical travel memories that will stay locked in my heart forever.
I appreciate you shedding a light on the homeless situation in this video in Portland by showing images of homeless people sleeping on the streets but I don't necessarily appreciate you showing those images while saying these people aren't necessarily the people you want as ambassadors for your city... I hate to say it but a lot of homeless people have a lot of good opinions and points.. outlooks... all it takes is one missed paycheck to end up just like them... I've met a homeless person that used to be a lawyer made a couple bad decisions and now they're on the streets and do you mean to tell me that, that homeless person wouldnt be (educated or able to hold a structured conversation) a good person to talk to or ask about the city or even fun things they used to do in the city... Not all homeless people are bad and I hate the stigma that they are it's just simply not true.... Love your videos keep up the good work
I’m going back and having a little marathon of these videos and I just realized I was there literally 2 weeks before you guys got there ! That’s just crazy to me, I just redound your channel a year and a half ago and it just blows my mind how the world can work like that ! Love your videos
I think you inadvertently walked through the roughest part of the city. Portland and Seattle are kind of weird where it's little pockets of homeless ppl. Both cities are going through a hard time on that front and I appreciate that you decided to edit your initial impressions. It would have been a very different experience of you had gone to the other Voodoo location 🤷♀️
I definitely agree, I’m born and raised in Oregon and usually the city is very alive, they theres a lot of homeless people but other than that its usually great but at the time it’s probably the worst place to visit/live
I second this! I feel like in ANY city you'll get the pockets of homeless people, I know LA is like that as well. I actually really like Portland, I think it's a super funky city
I live in Vancouver... Lots more homeless people here. I never feel threatened by them. They're just people like you and me. Show them love. It could be you one day.
I 100 percent agree, ive lived in portland sw my whole life and its amazing here. you just have to go to the right places, there's something people wont like everywhere
Nope, this is complete Liberalism at its finest. This is exactly what every democrat run city looks like Portland, Seattle, LA. San Francisco, Philadelphia, Chicago, NYC. If this is what thriving cities look like, I'd rather live in a peaceful dead city
I'm sorry you did not get the view of Mount Hood you were after, but am glad you found Voodoo Doughnuts, Multnomah Falls and the Pacific coast enjoyable. I appreciate your attempt to explain your feelings about Portland. 2020 has been a truly tumultuous year for this city. It has been at the heart of more than one national conversation this year. The pained and angry responses to racial inequality, white supremacy, police brutality, economic inequity, financial hardship and this deadly Virus have often spilled into our streets and are front and center in our consciousness (every day). I would not expect you to know that. Nor would that make for great entertainment on UA-cam. I understand that. Even so, I felt sad that the portion of the video showing Portland focused primarily on the area close to Voodoo Doughnuts. It IS one of the areas of this city that has been greatly impacted by the houselessness situation here. The problem has only grown bigger as more and more people have lost their jobs or been evicted due to COVID-19 related business closures and loss of income. While your video was panning across tents and shelters belonging to people living in rough circumstances, you said that these people you did encounter were not the ambassadors one would want for a city. I don't think they've ever claimed to be. In a perfect world they certainly wouldn't be. And yet, they ARE people and this is THEIR reality at the moment. It may not be pleasant to look at, and I think many Portlanders like myself DO find this unacceptable, but it is indicative of much larger societal problems that have yet to be addressed. The fact that anyone would have to choose to live that way in the richest country on earth is shameful. I understand that this was uncomfortable for you both and no doubt a stain on your travel vlog, but perhaps it will also draw attention to the incredible disparity in people's lived realities in this country. There IS way more to see here. It's unfortunate that you were unable to experience the West Hills, Japanese gardens, Forest Park, Columbia Gorge, Mount Tabor, North and South Portland, Mississippi, Hawthorne, Division and Metro areas, as well as the rivers. Very classy and mature response! After reading the comments calling them names, putting them down for their skin color and having a different view, it was nice to read this comment.
I live in Tacoma, Washington and love Portland...well the Portland of my memories. This is a hard time for a lot of our cities and Portland and Seattle are two of them. Hopefully one day we will see the cities of our memories and you can come back and make some wonderful memories of your own. Love you guys!!!!
Kara and Nate, you guys are the best! It looks like there was nothing you could have done differently. Thank you for honestly showing us your experience travelling through Oregon. I am personally frustrated that many of the commenters on this video would pressure you to make uneducated claims about a delicate situation. I just want you to know that I and so many others support you and are grateful to you for sharing so many amazing experiences with us. God bless you.
I said in your video last week I wished I could show you all around, and this is why. For one, there’s so much to see outside of downtown that is wonderful and quirky and awesome.
Thanks for giving our city a fair and honest review. The city is a wreck right now, but seeing Nate try Voodoo for the first time reminded me of what I used to love so much about being here. Portland used to be all about having a good time doing obscure/absurd things. Does anyone remember when all we wanted to do was go to Everyday Music and dig through a bunch of interesting CDs and movies? Later on, we'd stop by Plaid Pantry, grab a case of Pabst, and check out new bands with our friends at someone's apartment. Eventually, we'd get hungry and make Mac 'n Cheese. It was so pointless and satisfying.
I'm glad they did that "intermission", too! Although I think a homeless population is pretty common to every major city, you kind of just have to accept it as part of the scenery (and also an issue that cities have to deal with). Portland is such a fun city, I hope it gets a chance to redeem himself!
I mean its your own fault for electing loser that refuse to help the people and instead let the insane people run the show. The rest of the country is laugh at you all
@@javier8015 How do you know how I vote? What would you do to fix it? I'm just one person surrounded by 99 problems, and if I could get the culture war to stop I would. I can't be the only person who is tired of seeing normal people behave so terribly when their ideas are at odds. We draw these imaginary lines around politics and hate each other all day because of it. People are just people, but we evaluate them like they should be Gods. So tired of the venom from everyone, including my personal friends. Regrettably, I'm going to be leaving this city soon.
The discussion about Portland at the time this was posted makes me giggle a bit. Yes Portland went through a really rough time, but downtown isn’t the best area…ever. It’s known for being sketchy and weird and sometimes super unsafe. I never feel safe down there, but my mom loves it and tells me all the crazy stories. Weird doesn’t even begin to describe normal Portland.
Hey guys just wanted let you know that I’m so glad I discovered your channel. I’m in a wheelchair and it’s very hard for me to travel and I love being able to watch you go to different places that either I can’t get to or are very hard for me to get too! Thank you again for producing such awesome videos! Hope to meet you one day!!!!
Portlander here grateful for your attempt at giving our city a chance and painting a more or less complete picture! The why we’re here and where we’re going: 1. A lot of the grittiness comes from COVID restrictions, economic downturn, an incompetent mayor, systemic racism (racist and black exclusionary laws weren’t fully removed from the constitution until 2002), and a growing house less population without access to mental health care. 2. If you ever come back to pdx I’d be so happy to show you around other parts of town and create an even more holistic, joyful, and well rounded picture (though you did a pretty good job here, there’s a lot more to it!)
for anyone that lives in the NW to say anything about racism is utterly ridiculous!!! I am from the South and have more black friends than white....there are almost NO black people up here!!! and you think there is systemic racism because someone told you to think that??? NAIVE, much?
I’m sorry about your thoughts on my home town, Portland. We’re passionate and things have been intense for months. Let’s hope things change tomorrow. Come back another time! Things are not like this normally. 2020 sucks.
I hope you’re headed to Washington! Lots and lots of good coffee for Kara 💕 Good coffee spots in WA: Slate Coffee Roasters La Marzocco Milstead & Co. Narrative Coffee Also you MUST go to the San Juan Islands in WA! Absolutely gorgeous ferry from Anacortes to the islands and beautiful scenery! Rent Susie’s Mopeds! The Washington Coast isn’t as nice as the Oregon Coast - except Cape Flattery is really cool. If you want a super fun experience go to the Olympic Game Farm in Sequim. It’s a drive through, feed the animals zoo. Also Diablo Lake is an absolute MUST! If you want a fun “we stayed here” video - hike up Mount Pilchuck and stay in the fire look out at the very top. It’s STUNNING! Or the “Rolling Huts” in Winthrop, they’re designed by a famous architect group in Seattle called Olson Kundig. I’ve got plenty of where that came from - washington is a beautiful state!
It really is! I have lived in Washington 4 years now and I’m still constantly surprised. I’m familiar with most of your suggestions but not the game farm. Will have to investigate. Thanks for the new to-do! :)
As a full-time van dweller, for the past 5 years ... Although it is nice to get the manager's approval it is usually OK to spend the night (say 10 hours) in a 24 hour store's parking lot. Never had a problem. The problems occur with the large RVs and trucks towing a trailer. You are pretty stealth, once you put up your window covers. While you are in the 9th Circuit Federal Appeals Court (mostly western states) it is legal to sleep in your vehicle on any public street. See the Deserttrain 2014 case. I have cited this case a couple of times, and it works with cops ... because it is the law. - Many towns and cities do require you to move after 72 hours. If you have trouble getting your heater running ... buy a Buddy heater (about $65) and 1# propane tanks at Walmarts. Works great in a pinch.
Omg 8 have loved your channel for like over a year now but I've never been to any of the places you have been until now! Its soo cool to see you guys were I have also been I love you guys!
Downtown Portland feels empty for several different reasons. It's not just the protests - although that is part of it, sure. COVID means all the downtown offices are working remotely and all the tourists are staying home and not filling the giant downtown hotels. Multiple super famous restaurants have closed permanently. And I'm sure more will follow. Thankfully, the food cart scene is still vibrant and resilient. VooDoo is near where I used to work, and it was always a little sketchy looking. So many people in crisis and we've never had enough housing. At night (when stores were allowed to be open at night) there were blocks of bars nearby and drunken crowds would stand in line for 24/7 donuts. There are a lot of campers and more so since COVID, as they've been reluctant to clear them out in the middle of a pandemic. If you're not from the area, it's shocking to see. I know it was when I first moved here. And with COVID distance requirements, now we have even fewer emergency shelter beds. It's a mess, but I think we'll eventually find solutions. When this is over, it will be the vibrant, quirky city it was a year ago. But if you get a chance to cut through town when Pip's and Blue Star are open, I promise they're both worth the visit. You also should see our rose gardens and Forest Park over the summer.
I also used to live in Portland. I worked downtown. I was accosted by a girl in front of Nordstrom who had a knife. This was a decade ago. Portland claims it has a housing problem but it is the drug problem that creates most homelessness. The addictions rob people of their funds to pay rent much less carry a mortgage. Unless the drug problem, alcohol included is firmly dealt with I don't see how the city will get better. And I understand the tent cities have gotten worse since we moved in 2016. Now I-205 is lined with tents. Third World. Ripe for disease outbreaks.
@@bonniegirl5138 drug addiction isn’t the main reason for homelessness. Please educate yourself. Job loss, medical crisis, mental health crisis are the top reasons and then Addiction. You’re misleading people. My spouse works at a center for homeless people downtown.
@@NT-bz5nh And many times job loss, medical crisis and mental health break downs are due to drug addiction, legal and illegal. I would encourage you to watch the documentary Seattle is Dying. I contend that whatever homeless advocates are doing is not working because the problem is getting worse. You don't think those tent cities in Portland don't have dealers just like they do in Seattle? Give me a break. I was approached on the bus mall by a guy selling until he thought the black day timer I had was a Bible. I've witnessed drug deals on the Max and reported it. You think people are going to be completely honest about this when they apply for assistance. Most people are not even honest when things are going well. Look deeper.
This is false. Addictions are always always a secondary problem. The brain needs more serotonin and dopamine due to stress and mental health. People deal with that by addictions of: coffee, alcohol, shopping, sex, eating, phones, social media, sugar, drugs, stealing, weed, video games, TV, cigarettes, being around friends etc. Addiction is something many many people have, drive by a Starbucks to see the lines! But addiction is always due to a chemical imbalance or deficiency that needs fixed. Healthier ways of healing it is with extra sun, Vit D, meditation, Art, reading. I’m homeless and I promise you I don’t use drugs at all. I even went to college and had 2 huge homes In 2 towns and I promise you I’m the first person to help others. I’ve volunteered my whole life at schools, animal rescues and soup kitchens. So don’t judge those who had major traumas. Even those on drugs as they are on them to numb their traumas and help stress.
What you saw in PDX was a combination of factors. Due to Covid restrictions most businesses downtown have been closed since March, they were boarded up for security then, not because of the protests. The area near Voodoo is near two of the major houseless services/feeding centers so many of the houseless stay nearby. There is also a very large houseless camp nearby that the city set up when Covid hit in order to provide the houseless with adequate sanitation facilities so as to keep the virus from running rampant through that community. Finally, there are the protests. Oregon and Portland in particular is a progressive, activist state. We show up to protest. In normal times you can find a protest of some sort a few times a month. Given a righteous cause like the need for racial equity that the murder of George Floyd brought to the forefront and Portlander’s are in it for the long haul. Add the brutalization that protesters have experienced at the hands of Portland Police Bureau and the Dept of Homeland Security officers that were deployed here early in the summer and protesters are doubled down. Mainstream media hasn’t covered the protests evenly. To get a full flavor of the brutality you’d have to watch local freelance journalist and watch the lawsuits being filed against the city. That’s not to say that some protests haven’t devolved into riots or that during protests property damage hasn’t been done; at times it has. Realize that you saw Portland at it’s worst and it’s best. It’s economy is at its worst. Parts of downtown don’t look a beautiful as they usually do. Portland’s people & spirit is at its best trying to survive and to advocate and care for those who are in need. Come see us again when Covid restrictions lift. Watch how what happens in Portland is already bringing about changes in policing in the country. We are a beautiful city. Portland will be worth your second look.
As sad as Portland was to see and you barely showed it; you need to embrace showing it’s sadness and current state.. 2020 is going down in history, if you capture it now, when it comes back to life again you will appreciate in a different perspective and have a more realistic story to tell later in life. Don’t skip the sad views just be creative. If you come back to NY you will see some sad places now compared to the last time you were here; but I believe it will reincarnate again

I stayed with my two young adult daughters in Portland at the beginning of 2019. We stayed in downtown right near Powell's books. It was a little sketchy back then, but I can see why now it's pretty bad. Try again when all is better.
I’ve been jumping back and forth in watching your older international travel videos and following the new videos as you go, and it was so wonderful to see this sort of everyday video 😍😍
I appreciate that you were trying to be diplomatic when discussing Portland. I'm wondering if you actually researched the city before you went, or just unhappily ended up in a bad area by the donut place, and so didn't get a broader view of what Portland has to offer. And, Kara, I'm thinking of you. Because according to my Facebook coffee group, Portland has a vibrant coffee scene.
Thanks for the vid & for cutting your editorial on Portland short. I'm from Oregon and know that things are going in all different directions right now. You kept it respectful and kept it moving. The Oregon coast is amazing, isn't it?!
Thank you for treating Portland with a delicate touch. With the months of protests, looting, etc. it's not a vacation destination right now. Well, except for all of the tenters everywhere. So happy you enjoyed the Oregon coast 😀!
Kara coffee is a HUGE scene in Portland, you missed out on Deadstock Coffee and Cadillac Cafe. You guys definitely have to visit again because there was a lot that was missed.
My husband, and I are from Vancouver WA (right across the Columbia River from Portland). We honestly avoided Portland for the most part because of how bad it has gotten. It's so sad. It honestly has never been very clean, or visitor friendly. We just moved to Tennessee, and live only an hour away from Nashville. We were suprised how beautiful and clean Nashville is, because Portland was all we ever knew. We appreciate having such a nice city close by now that we can actually enjoy.
I am new subscriber and have enjoyed watching your videos since the beginning of the year. Ya'll seem to handle every sticky situation with class and honesty. I was surprised that this video took such a negative tone. I am not sure what happened, but in light of what's happening in the country (esp. in Portland) I am surprised at the lack of empathy. It would've been cool to see you volunteer or talk to the folks who lived there. Not everybody can travel because of this year, and I know that I've been watching because I've been missing traveling. It was disappointing to watch this, but it just shows that we all have room to grow and think about our perspectives.
Portland is a pit whole. Its disgusting. And I live here I know. I think they were overly kind. People who arent used to the disgusting state of this place will be able to see it better then those who are blind to it and think this lifestyle is healthy in anyway.
We locals have a saying; if you can’t see Mt Hood , it’s raining. If you can see Mt Hood, it’s going to rain.
Hahaha
We have a similar saying about rain and Mt. Rainier (emphasis on the first 4 letters of the mountain’s name) in Seattle 🙂
The same about Lundy Island off the Devon coast in England. Although we say "If you can see Lundy Island it's going to rain, if you can't see it, it already is!"
Rain makes the sun shine brighter !!!! 🌞 🌧
Aha that's a Vancouver kind of saying
Its like when Kara and Nate entered Portland they pulled out their emergency hipster clothes to blend in.
To blend in with the local color they'd need to shoot up and poop their pants.
I was checking out Nate's gray flannel hard.
so true i was born and raised in portland and you are that is right on the spot.
Many of the boarded up windows pre-date the protests due to COVID-19.

I doubt if your form of homelessness includes shooting up on the sidewalk or throwing bottles of feces and urine at the police. If it does, then meh.
Just FYI, that isn't the sketchy part of downtown, it's really close to where the Saturday Market is usually held, with live street music and tons of smiling faces but because of the unemployment rates a lot more people are homeless right now in Portland.

@@hairyscotman As someone who visited Portland in 2019 I think you are being unfair. Yes, there was a lot of homeless and open drug use but at the same time, there were awesome beautiful areas. The day before we went downtown there was a protest. You should have explained what happened in Portland because it is not clear at least for me :/
I guess the homeless camps and trash can be pretty shocking if you’re not from Portland. Many building downtown are boarded up because of riots that happen also every night. Portland used to be more lively and rich but there’s just not a ton of stuff you can do right now in downtown unless you work there because of COVID and the night protests or riots.
The riots in Portland have been on international news, all over!
People don’t need to make their views public just because they have a platform.
@Stop my ego. they don’t owe you anything. Stop feeling like you’re entitled to everything
Portland was a dump long before the protests. We went there a couple years ago and almost everywhere we went the stench of vomit, urine and feces was overpowering.
No.
So much respect to how ya'll addressed the Portland situation! It takes a lot of respect to not completely trash the city for how it is right now. I think you both did a really nice job addressing the whole situation.
PS.... Voo Doo is the best (from an oregonian so good taste Nate)
What “peaceful ” protest do to a city is just unbelievable 🤮
Yeah, its not great. I wish they would have come when it wasn't covid or any protests.
Dear Kara and Nate,
My husband is Filipino-American, grew up in Oregon and before Covid, we go every year while based in the Philippines.
Good stuff!

On the coast near Canon Beach, if it is open make sure to visit Ecola State Park, the views looking down the coast are spectacular.

totally thought the same... So I just got back from Portland and I had a great time! Yeah, the downtown area is maybe a little grim right now, but there's a whole interesting and vibrant city outside of that. Idk, I just don't think any big American city is going to have that feeling that we want when traveling right now. It's just not the time.

It was a genuine question as Portland and everything that has been going on has been in the news for months. Secondly, they've been traveling in the US, not foreign countries. Thirdly, they live their life on social media, and the internet, so I find it incredibly hard to believe that they didn't run across anything in all this time.

Portlander here grateful for your attempt at giving our city a chance and painting a more or less complete picture! The why we’re here and where we’re going:

I’m watching this on my iPad. So when you asked Siri the temp, my Siri responded. 73° in Texas.
Nate: passion for donuts 🍩

@@TheAwkwardTourists yes it is!
Best part of my Sundays
@@bonniegirl5138 They don't clear them as often with COVID. And yes. They need to shift some police funding to drug treatment and prevention.
You think people are going to be completely honest about this when
they apply for assistance.
I live in Oregon and I’m so happy you got to explore it!
Lol
Patiently dying and waiting for the video to be uploaded.
KARA AND NATE ALL THE WAAAAY💃
As sad as Portland was to see and you barely showed it; you need to embrace showing it’s sadness and current state..
2020 is going down in history, if you capture it now, when it comes back to life again you will appreciate in a different perspective and have a more realistic story to tell later in life.
Don’t skip the sad views just be creative. If you come back to NY you will see some sad places now compared to the last time you were here; but I believe it will reincarnate again
100% They had the opportunity to explain without taking sides. They decided to just skip it all together. This country is diverse... with many issues. You have to be able to at least make educated remarks about how and why this was your experience.
@@sunnydaze8763 I don't think they did skip it altogether. They posted their beliefs by sharing all the negative comments. They completely ignored anything but their ingrained conservative leaning thoughts.
@@sunnydaze8763 I don’t think they need to explain anything to anybody.
They could mime the entire video and their charisma will come through the screen.
They didn’t skip it all together, they did show a little. I just wished they would show more.
If in the future they elect to show more within their comfort good for us.
If they choose to not, we need to respect their choices.
K&N are not bullet proofed to the side effects of the emotional roller coaster 2020 brought upon us all. We need now more so than ever to remember to be kinder to others.
Continue to wish them well in their travels since it is not easier during this year either. ☮️🕊✌🏻💕
@@taga2699 I dont believe I was being unkind with my comment. Its my right to express my opinion as is it yours. I didn't say I don't respect thier choices either. I expressed in a previous post that I wish they had dug a bit deeper into the recent history of Portland and why things are as they are. We can disagree on what makes a great travel vlog. I enjoy learning the history and sociology when watching travel vlogs. Not just the pretty sunsets and the great food...
@@sunnydaze8763 my kind remark was not referring to you being unkind
Sorry I didn’t even realized that it replied directly to your message
I thought I was commenting after all the comments (if this makes any sense)
Thank you for showing tidbits here and there on Instagram. Every time I see a post on there I get excited about the upcoming video. Thanks for the content and for the laughs y’all. Love ya!!
Portland is beautiful! Went there pre Covid! Had so much fun!
"It's been raining every day since we've driven into this state..." ...Annnd welcome to Oregon, hahaha! ☔
I doubt it's raining in Bend. Welcome to the temperate rain forest portion of Oregon.
Clip of Kara dropping her phone right as she landed her feet on the West Coast was so funny. Kara you just made my day
I stayed with my two young adult daughters in Portland at the beginning of 2019. We stayed in downtown right near Powell's books. It was a little sketchy back then, but I can see why now it's pretty bad. Try again when all is better.
"Dumpsteeeeeeeeeeeeeeer!!!! "
yep. get rid of it lol
I’ve been jumping back and forth in watching your older international travel videos and following the new videos as you go, and it was so wonderful to see this sort of everyday video 😍😍
The Oregon coastline is literally one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to! Glad y'all finally made it! Cheers. :)
YAY I AM EARLY!! I absolutely love following your adventures. Keep going!
I love how you said You are traveling through food! I love it!
Does anyone else get the impression they hate their van but can’t say it?
I think they miss flying. They love airplanes and lounges.
Yup lol
The van is not long for this world.......They will have a plan B soon
Totally.
I’ve got that vibe more than once. They are not loving the van. An RV is so much more like a home if you are traveling long term.
