How to paint concrete patio with Behr Granite Grip floor covering

- Don't Hate, Decorate!! Give that dull porch or patio NEW life with a coat of Behr Premium Floor Coating. Through a lil trial and error I came to the conclusion that my way was easier than their directions. Overall I am impressed with the outcome and love the new look. Prepare the surface prior to applying the new coating and you too can achieve great results.
My porch is around 80sq. ft.
2 gal. of Behr Premium floor covering @ 45.00 ea.
The Porch was painted red prior to all the prep and a few spots were left. After the 2nd coat onlt a 2ish square foot area i saw some red still bleeding through so when i do the walk way ill do another coat on that spot. But for about $150, for the walk way and porch, the look is worth it to go from drab to WOW!

Great job scraping to prep the surface. After scraping you should have used the Behr #880 Bonding Primer. After the bonding primer dried apply 2 thin coats using a 1/4 adhesive roller. Granite Grip is meant to be layered in multiple thin coats. 1 gallon covers 50sq ft with 2 coats. 3rd coat if necessary. Finished product looks good!
Thanks for the video. My plan is to paint an old patio too, one with at least two (very old) coats of paint. So...I will be scraping the entire section first; followed by pressure cleaning; then it's on to applying the paint. If there is a primer available, I will use the primer first instead of using the coating first. As you say, "preparation" is the key to getting the desired results!
Great video! I’m going to do this to my garage. But like always I review everything first. You cracked me up with the preparation H comment 😄
Looks like it turned out pretty good. I'd be happy to give this a try on my front porch. Glad to know there is no need to waste time pouring it in the roller pan.
Thanks for this video. Great tips, right to the point and fun to watch. I really appreciate the tips.
Great video! I am getting ready to paint my front porch.
Love your personality!
Preparation H! Lol.......loved it!
Loved the video and especially your tip on me time for men and women. Such sage advice !!
Good job...I love how you stress preparation. I think it's that way for just about any worthy effort especially painting and anything with a brush. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.
therandeydenyah thank you I truly appreciate the comment. i try to share as much as i can to help others NOT do the mistakes i do. Learn from mine as i do.Thank you for viewing
Hey Shack, thanks for the video. I used your technique of pouring it and spreading it and that worked great for me on my driveway. 2 coats took 8 gallons but the driveway looks so much better!
Billzebub Very nice. I would love to hear back in a month as the condition of the driveway. I'm curious as to the effect from tires if it leaves marks or not. I know many have inquired about this for their driveways and would greatly appreciate the out come over time.
8 gallons!!! yikes
Thanks a lot for your advice, I love it!, God bless you!
Finally!! Someone with the same type of surface as I have. I will definitely have to scrape it first. Thank you dear sir.
Pam Champion
you are very welcome. Just get a nice knee pad take your time and do a good job. the end result will be more than worth it. 4 years and look as good as day 1. Thanks for viewing.
Your video inspired me to go buy this product, turned out GREAT! Thanks for your help.
Thank you Stacey for the kind words. I'm happy you had a great outcome. So many complain about it but with a little work, the results are great. I'm very happy for you and your very welcome.
Sorry to say just the opposite for me. Saw this yesterday in Home Depot. Was considering applying it in my garage. In the Behr pamphlets and video it looks amazing. In real world as in this video...not so much. Nothing against your work or prep sir, just not what I expected. Glad I watched.
I just used it. It’s great.
I sold the house that I first installed it at, but went right away and purchased more for the front porch area of this home. It has been down now just over 3 years, and other than one small bird droppjng stain, it looks perfect. I really like how well it has held up outside with the weather.

Thank you for your instruction videos. Linda Miller
That was a great video. Thank you!
Thank you very much. Cant wait to go in on my project.
Totally agree with you on the preparation x 3! My Mother in law had this done and they didn't prep the concrete and it was peeling within a year!
Stephen so sorry to hear that. Sad but some people just don't take the time or expense to prep properly. Fortunately It can be redone. Thanks for viewing
Great job , thanks for posting!
Thank you for filming this, was good to know how it looks. Will see if I can buy paint in England. Love the just plosh it on, will agree with that. Take care
Thank you sir for huge efforts to shoot this video!
SS if it helps in any way i have done my job. Thanks for viewing.
I used this same product and followed the instructions from the BEHR video. It took way more gallons than expected and it didn't look quite as nice as yours. On the second coat, I started to do double roll method in the same area to help it spread easier. I was thinking of pouring it on, which I should have done, but decided not to risk wasting all the granite grip. Like several people already mentioned, I wish I would have seen your video first. I did this on my outdoor slab in the backyard that I keep my BBQ pit on. I still lack some cracks that were filled in to paint over that I was letting dry while I did my painting. This was the practice area so I know what to do for the garage. Thanks for posting this video and I will definitely use this method on my garage. I can't wait to see more videos and I do have pictures of the steps I took to coat my slab. Still have more to do this weekend.
Thank you Steve for viewing. Very true I watched their videos and after just a few rolls I knew this wasn't going to work. The roller just wasn't picking up the granules just the liquid so pouring it was the only option. I have a small area that the red still bleed through so when I do the walk way I’ll put another coat on that area. Good luck on the garage that’s a big project.
Steve, did you end up doing your garage? Thinking about using this product in ours and have been looking for someone who has done it to find out how it worked out...
best video about painting concrete...your advice about just pouring it on the floor and just roll it it is great thanks ...
besamemucho5 I thank you so much. If through trial and error I find a better way I’ll pass that on hopefully helping others.
Yeah pouring it out on the floor and spreading it around works best! I’m almost finished.

may not be by the directions but after 4 years it still holding up just fine. Thanks for viewing.

You are very welcome. Pouring it out works great This is still looking great to this day. I'm very happy with this. Thanks for viewing.
@@TheShackHome does it have to be sealed after? Great video!
@@benrussell1138 No all i did was pour it on let it dry for i think 5 hours or till the next day and applied a 2nd coat its been outstanding for 3 years now no issue at all. But took time to prepare the surface.
Can also acid stain! What imma do to mine
@@hectorsanchez2524 Hope it turned out well! Mine still looks really good! 😁🎉
Thank you for this video. I want to do this to my brushed concrete patio. We had color tinting adding to it when it was poured and it looks awful because it is so uneven and dirty looking:( So the the concrete guy stained it and it barely lasted a year. I'm trying hard to remove the leftover stain, in some areas it comes off easy with a power washing but in some it is very stubborn. Now I'm trying paint stripper. If I've tried paint stripper and then power washed again and there is still some leftover color, how concerned do I need to be? Will the granite grip last? I'm really trying to avoid using a concrete sander.
I have a project I'm going back to fix because Granite Grip is pealing up at the edges on a concrete patio. This was a raw concrete application. When I first applied Granite Grip..I had to call Behr because I kept getting streaking from rollers. They told me to rent a texture sprayer. They did reimburse me for the rental and 12 gallons of extra product. However..fast forward to 11 months later and I am going to the same project to scrape up the edges and I have to re-spray! I'm not a happy camper about this
Good video and funny guy, what more could you ask for👍
Truly apperciate the kind words Thank you Gary for viewing and have a fantastic 4th
Has this product held up? I was thinking of buying it and realized this video is 3 years old. I really liked your video..your entertaining and informative
Ann i did a 2 year update video and still to this day it has held up great. I have no complaints at all.
I'd pour some on the patio and then smooth it out. Thicker coat and better coverage.
Love it ..pour it ..lol..Im going to try that solution..your great..lol.I have a red porch...lol fire Engine red ..lol
Nice job 🙆👍
Great video
Michelle thank you, Checked out your channel love the plants. Love a lady that like to get her hand dirty. I enjoy gardening but i have soo much going on i have to focus on just a few thing but i grow some veggies and flowers for summer. I will visit you again and see how the plants are doing. Thanks for viewing.
I wonder if you were to use a less expensive base coat/sealer of a similar color to even everything out to start off with.. then use the Behr grit stuff as a final coat. I know back in the day when I painted cars, whenever we used meta-flake or candy colors we'd always start off with an even base-coat making it easier to cover the final desired effect/colors..
EXCELENTE.....! Thank U
Alberto You are very welcome. Thank You for Viewing.
Good job

Can you PLEASE tell me the best time of year to paint outside stop steps, pllllease. Thanks in advance ❤
Thanks for taking the time to share this and all of your tips! Looking forward to an update on how the product holds up. I'm also curious, do you know if the product is available in other colors?
SonomaZin you very welcome. I will have an update coming soon a few have asked. It will be in an overdue year in review video, My 1 year anniversary on youtube. *Thanks for the video. its been a while since you posted this. Hows the paint holding up? im looking for something tough for my garage floor !*
I love you dad jokes!
That's what I was thinking, pour it on.use an extension on the roller. Now, could you please come to my house and show me How? I'm not quite sure I have it. Lol.
Great video!
Road trip....
Looks great, and thanks for the video! Wondering if there is a color that closely matches the color of cement? I am doing my porch, but not the driveway. I haven't been able to find anything.
Cameron Rich
This brand is limited to just a few colors and you can't change the color. so not really any light gray but this is pretty close to cement. the driveway is a little liter than the coating.
Looks groovy dude :)
thank you so much, very helpful...!!!
why not using a pressure cleaner instead of a scraper?
Manny i don't think it would of gotten the paint off as much as scrapping. But for just cleaning before painting yes. scrub a little with a 50/50 or 30/70 (depending on how dirty the surface) mix of acid and water then rinse with a pressure washer. Glad to help and thank you for viewing.
@@TheShackHome A good pressure washer with a turbo nozzle is designed for this work
You think a behr non slip patio paint would be a good first coat or a catalyst to thin it out?
What Kind of roller did you use?
So do we need to acid wash or not? We have a covered front porch with very old but nice smooth concrete. No stains really. Do we wash it down with what? And then paint?
I'd like to see a short clip in a few months to see how well it holds up. It looks good though. Thanks for the insight.
I just might do that Behr also has a video showing how to apply this product. I still wonder about their thought process as the first coat being the seal coat. why they did not come up with a separate can just that purpose but it does go on pretty thick it did adhere quite well I'm impressed with it thus far. I think it will last because it is so thick almost like a medium grit sandpaper. I like the results I like the way it looks can't wait to finish the walkway leading up to the porch really dressed up that entry thank you so much for the kind words and viewing and for not razzing me on my bad joke
Has anyone tried troweling this product on? Can it be troweled then maybe rolled?
I liked this alot
Bri thank you. Thanks for viewing
Do you need to prime it?
So no water can touch the finish for 30 days???
Question for you... if I just barely poured new concrete (tall curbing) would there need to be any etching, preparation, etc? The concrete now is like a week or so old. I would love to just roll this stuff on to make it pop a bit more.
Thank you for viewing Michael great question. Personally I would let that thing dry for 30 days makeing sure it cures completely just because you just never know. I always use acid on the driveway just because they're not new and you want to make sure it's very clean from the oils and rubber from the tires. aftertime rubbing and walking on it naturally natural smooths the surface. Personally I would do the extra step mix a 50-50 batch just to guarantee a good surface for the flooring to adhere to but not necessary it's just something I personally would do I rather spend a couple extra hours and dollars for a better outcome and longevity. I would recommend waiting let that thing dry for a good two more weeks then go gung ho
Hi there,
Thanks for the great video. I am about to start the project. would you please provide a little more detail on how to prep the surface? What's the acid you mentioned in the video? What's the scraper you are using?
Jiang hu prep is all up to what the surface has or doesn't have. If it is clean, paint free, just wash with a little acid, either buy some from a local store or if you are extremely careful you can also use pool acid if available. If the surface isn't too bad a 50/50 mix will due. if it it somewhat dirty grimy i would go 60/40 or even 30/70. Please be very careful acid isn't something to play with.Wear a mask for the fumes and wear longselves and pants incase any splashes on you. If it has paint on it, any scraper will due,4" or 6", just depends how much work you want to put into it.I have a large scraper for when i do driveways or large patios but as i did in this video on a small patio a hand scraper will due. scrape it first then wash it. Hope it goes well and turns out great.
The Shack thanks for the info. I have a small patio like yours in the video and it has paint on it. I'll give it a shot :) thanks again.
I wonder if I could paint a wood floor with this paint!?
Thank you for this video. Are you in HB? I'd like to do this in Iowa. Freeze/thaw issues. Will this work (after the muriatic acid) in freeze/thaw environments?
Marylou you are welcome and thank you for viewing. Yes it’s on the boarder to Huntington Beach 6 miles to HB pier. I don’t know about there temp rating I will look into it this weekend and get a better answer. After 7 months this still looks great and is holding up well. I would think if there isn’t any cracks for water to get into should be fine. You know all too well water seeps into a crack it freezes and the crack widens, repeat and you know the story. I will be posting an update video this week to show the porch.
ab - I'll await your comments. I'm planning on trying this out for my mud-room entry way in the Spring 2017. I'll follow your lead on the Muriatic acid, filling problematic cracks & holes, then applying. Maybe we can compare notes again then?
How do you prep when it's been previously painted and you want to repaint? I've scraped all the loose stuff off but should I be scraping right down to the cement?
Sandy Marion
personally I'd scrape it real good give it a once over with some pool acid. NOTE: if not comfortable using this DON'T. It can burn and cause real problems if inhaled. Just saying this is what I would do. I have experience with it and at one time transported hazardous chemicals so I had proper training, Just make sure it is clean and ALL loose material removed. Should be fine. This porch was somewhat painted fortunately it wasn't painted with very good paint.
Hey the Shack man how has it held up looks then but what about now.
Jason here is an update i did still looks great I'm real happy with this.

New subby though 👏🏾
I am looking to paint my balcony and this video is very helpful. I am curious if balconies too need to be treated with acid or if scraping them is enough.
fiksal I suggest only concrete with oil stains use acid. normal concrete power wash or a good scrubbing and if painter prior scraping
@@TheShackHome thanks!
Love your video. I want to do my patio. Never been painted, just concrete. So what steps do I need to use? Wash with pressure washer and apply? Do we put the acid in the pressure washer tank? Ha...I’m new at this.
keelsmac01 depending on the condition. If I were doing an area that had oil stains on it I'd do a wash with the acid if just a normal area then a good cleaning with a degreaser and power washer would do fine.
Don't put acid in the pressure washers soap tank. An old sprinkler can works well I dilute mine with water just sprinkle it over the concrete surface like your water and flowers
You said you used 2 gallons of that? How large of area did you cover? I’ve got 5.5 ft. By 5 ft. Will that take 1 gallon or 2?
Why this product is not allowed to enter Australia?
should apply 2 sealant coats on first
Can you eproxy coat this?
What would you recommend to fill the cracks and then use the Granite Grip? Looks nice.
if the cracks aren't too big you can fill them with the paint but if large Id get liguid cement fill them and let dry completely
Is it still holding up?
This project turned out great! How has the paint lasted 4 years later??
Carter DeVol
after 4 years still looks great, I for one am very happy with the product.
Awesome. Thank you for the reply.
Why ? Didn't you buy a sealer first then we'll stir the top coat iv used this and it's designed to go on in one coat
Stacey, I have some concrete planters I would like to paint. What type of paint can be used to paint cement planters?
If they are smooth surface id go with this and check for different colors. Also a couple of viewers below Richard/David Jacks/Hunter had a great Idea if you want a stencil pattern just tape it then paint let dry for a little bit peal off boom pattern painted pot
How is it holding up?? Follow up vid maybe ? 🤔
The product is terrible. I put mine on less than 2 years ago and it is peeling off. I saw bad reviews and assumed they must have just done crap prep work. I was wrong. It is just a bad product.
This is meant to be poured on and spread with the roller
I have been painting custom homes exteriors interiors you name it his method is his own there are so many different variations by other painters on how to roll and spread paint on all kinds of surfaces his rolling and spreading paint was so unorthodox to me and I have been painting for over 38 years my point is you have to give it a try and you will develop the feel and stroke for yourself.....coverage coverage coverage
FYI....A Palm Sander hooked up to a shop vac is more efficient and not as hard on the body...
how does this product stand up to shoveling in the winter. here in Canada, most home depot decorative coatings don't last long unless you use a primer, then a waterproof varnish over final finish. microcements are amazing, and you can create any design you want. but that's another episode. but you got the technique down brother. check out isomat microcement deco finish and deco flex. very strong and easy to apply. available in Europe and Canada only. oh crap sales pitch!! hahaha.
Hi there. Nice job! Especially where you removed most of the old paint.... How does it look now???? Is it holding up well?
Lynne i did an update about 8 months or so later and even to day still is great. no peeling or bubbling. I really like it. Once i started pouring it out that is.... the link below is that update. Thank you for viewing.
ua-cam.com/video/Q_N7UEkbkHw/v-deo.html
Thank you very kindly for the response! ;)
You'er very welcome Lynne
I have to paint a porch with multiple layers of existing paint. Did you prep with anything other than just scrapping? How did it hold up over time?
Pamela Stanfield
fortunately this porch only had 1 layer. If it had multiple layers i may of used a stripper to cut down on the scraping. any case yes this is all i did and its as good today as it was the first day. I'm really impressed with this. For my needs its perfect.
What else can you use to clean and etch the concrete? I have vinyl siding right next to the concrete step and the muriatic acid will destroy that vinyl.
earl0520 I have 2 suggestions either Zep or Super Clean. Both work well as degreasers. Use them full strength do not dilute them scrub the concrete, you just want to make sure it is clean, no oil at all rinse with a pressure washer if possible help get in the pores and wash away any oil residue. You should be fine. Super Clean is in a purple bottle you can find it at an auto parts store and Home Depot. Zep will be an orangeish color, it’s the citrus that breaks down the oil, I get that trough Home Depot. Both 1 gal containers and are full strength.
i really love your bubbly personality.. i was sooo inspired by your video hope to see more
your pouch was transformed into a whole new porch. let me ask you what kind of paint did you have.... it looks like sand was in it to make it thick like that am i correct.. great job
Oh can i also uses that paint for my basement concrete floors??? thank you
JWJ it's Behr Premium Floor Coating. The sand or grit is premixed in the paint. You could most definitely use this in your basement. As i stated preparation is key. make very sure it is clean and completely dry before you apply this. Also it is around $50 a gallon so a basement depending on how much your square footage is this could be costly. You don't want this to go to waist if not applied properly. Thank you for the compliment. Thank you for viewing
I think it is referred to as 'cutting in'
Very correct, at 16:16 i actually say cut it in as you would painting ceiling or walls, cut it in then rool it. Thanks for viewing.
Hey brother any chance you could share what you charged for labor on that porch floor thanx.
John Lazzari
sorry it was my rental. I did it because the porch as slippery when it got wet and this has grit in it so it was a must for the safety for my tenants. Being close to the beach just a little moisture and you could slip and fall. sorry don't know what I'd charge
Faster using abrasive paint removing sanding cup on an angle grinder. I use 2 part garage floor epoxy,. Add included sparkles for show and non slip compound, one coat and you're done. Goes on and dry fast. On my driveway 8 years now with many tenant in and out vehicle traffic, still good.
The bad joke still got a small chuckle out of me.
Do you have to fix cracks on concrete?
louie sanchez
yes you can Small cracks you would do like I did with the brush cutting the edges in dab the paint in the crack, filling the crack, allow it to dry and then paint over the patio
Do you the that think applying concrete primer would have helped?
Manuel helped in what way. It cover well the little spot the the red bled through will be covered with a 3rd coat to that small area when i apply this to the walk way leading up to the porch. That it could of helped keeping the color from showing but still did a great job without the primer. If you have a colored area and wish to change that color with this produce then it might be a good ides to put a base coat of primer first as I do when I repaint interior walls. Thanks Manuel good question and thanks for viewing.
The Shack Thank you sir for your response.Yea I was just wondering if I did apply primer will it cover better and go on smoother.but my front steps nevered been painted so I was just wondering when u paint you usually add primer so the material can stick without peeling but I guess u don't need it for this kind and I could just apply the acid wash to it and apply the material.Thank you.👍
Was the paint in your can, and when you applied it look really blue? It looks like yours dried to the gray as promised, I'm having trouble with getting past the initial blue color of the paint in the can.
Before I applied the coating I mixed the coating with a 5" double paddle joint compound mixer, I attached to my drill, to thoroughly mix the coating. When I was applying the coating to the edges in this video you can see it was gray but may had a blue hue to it, I think due to the granules in the mix. But never did look blue at all. The store you purchased it from should've mixed it for you or at least shook it I would have them open it up to make sure that it is the correct color if you can I would return it maybe it's just a bad batch. I will say though I recently repainted my room in my house, little man cave, and during certain times of the day the walls are a light gray but they do take on a blue hue. It could be just because of the gray itself but really should not look blue. Thank you for viewing. Sorry I can't help more.
The Shack ż
Can you use kiltz interior exterior primer first?
Joe Lee thats a good question. I would have to say no. This produce states no primer needed and i have personally never used Kills on concrete. I do use it all the time after i drywall a room or painting over stains on the ceiling or a dark color when going lighter in a room but never floor or concrete.
have you ever painted the exterior of a house? I am looking at buying a house built in the 1950s for a rent house. it has what looks like shingles on the side. It's gray and dull. i was wondering if you can paint that?
jtyreetex interior and exterior. I have an electric airless sprayer. I would highly recommend painting the exterior with an airless sprayer. save you lots of time.then go back and hand paint eves and window frames. if that is a shingle type siding it will get in the nooks and crannies giving a better seal and coverage.I would pressure wash it prior to painting making sure its clean of all dirt.
