Hey guys! Today on the show I drive quite possibly one of the most fun custom-built turbo cars in the world. This 1985 Toyota Celica is some of the best times i've ever had in a lightweight sports car, and that's saying a lot. With a 2.4L 22-RE inline four under the hood, complete with a home-built turbo kit, Cameron's project car has me wondering about the word "torque." Seriously, it was so much fun.

I loved those cars, but Toyota actually made a turbocharged version of that engine called the 22R-TE. It was used in a few of their trucks from 1985-87. I'm sure it didn't put out the power that this one dishes out but a turbo upgrade would've done well since it had strong internals.

From the A pillars back, the GT-S Celicas are identical to the same generation supra. You can literally swap any thing from one to the other. A pillars forward, is different. The Supra's nose is stretched, including the wheelbase. So fenders and the like cannot be swapped (well, anything is possible with enough cutting and welding I suppose).

Thanks for doing this review Marcus. It's a much more attainable car for the average person. I grew up with these cars in Australia, they are full of character, it's not the overall speed but the driving experience that counts. That thing is a torque monster! More usable in the real world.

    Awesome build!
I had an 84 Celica GTS for 8 years. I loved it! It was comfortable on trd sport springs ( lowered before I got it). I had stock wheels with the 225/60/14 Z rated tire that glued you to the road. It had A better ride, better handling, more room and more Creature Comforts than the 70's 240Z and early 80's 280ZX non turbos that I could outrun all the time.
I even sewed a new leather cover for the steering wheel when the original one wore through where you normally keep your hands.
It was a little rusty around the sunroof and rear hatch and when the transmission failed at 225000 Miles I sold it for $1,000 instead of fixing it. I bought a 1990 Celica GTS and regretted it because it wasn't as near as good handling with only comprable power and gas mileage, better stereo though. I looked at but could not afford the alltrack at the time.
I still love the Celica brand though. And I still daily drive a 2002 GTS. I bought that one brand-new and drove every one of the 225k on it now.

    • @TheFunGun5
      @TheFunGun5 5 років тому

It's a shame what happened to the brand. With Toyota cheating with the GT-4 and getting banned from WRC and the japanese market going bust In the early nineties spelled the doom for the brand.
They tried saving it with the 99-05 redesign with snappy tight steering and sleek looks but it lacked too much in the power department to compete with its competition.
Currently driving a 2002 GT(sadness) and for 02 its fantastic, still holds up in the looks and it's faster than generic econo-boxes everyone drives nowadays.

Scored one of these for FREE (minus about 100 dollars for abandoned vehicle/title fees) when a neighbor put his house up for sale. He pushed it out front and let it sit until it got a parking/tow notice on it. I had my eyes on it for weeks. Come to find out, it was the previous home owners vehicle - who had since passed away. I moved it across the street, and applied for abandoned AZ title, and BAM I own a red 84 Celica GTS. It started off the 5 year old Optima battery that was left in it, and had half a tank of varnished fuel! Bone stock, old folk owned, EVERY receipt and document from window sticker to oil change in the glovebox, manual, 22r-e, 160k miles. I have plans for this lovely piece of history, and none that will let the deceased owners turn in the grave. It will remain stock and CLEAN! I LOVE what has been done to this platform in the video though, I have had thoughts, but I think leaving her stock is the way to go.

@@rustedratchetgarage6788 not true my father-in-laws 93 Toyota pickup broke on him and I helped him take it apart to find it in pieces at the bottom of the oil pan.

Didnt say the couldn't break but first the guides go because of loose chain slapping the weak plastic guides they use post 1982 then usually the chain rubs a home in the timing cover letting coolant into the clock and people think the head gasket is gone ive bought/fixed/sold 3 with this issue if coolant gets to the t chain tensioner the chain will jump and most likely break so I guess I was wrong about saying they don't wear cause they do stretch when high miles

Very cool, and nice to hear "Celica" pronounced properly!
One thing though, did it have an exhaust leak or something? It sounded a bit funny, especially from inside the car.
    Still awesome though.
I used to own a '77 RA23 which was an awesome little beast, & planned to retro fit a 3S-GTE in it, but unfortunately life had other plans! 😩😭

I've got a 22re in my 92 toyota pickup, terribly slow when stock but if you build them then they can get pretty insane.

whats with the (I'm guessing) valvetrain or turbo noise (ticking) when it's on boost? Don't think I've ever heard an engine sound like that

Its an exhaust manifold leak. Nbd. Turbo blew so now i have to pull it all apart and rebuild it

On the celica Supra F type 7.5" diffs, toyota never put the splined clutch packs in, they are just 3 stationary plates each side. They are 2 way clutch type lsd though, so first thing is to go to weir Performance and buy their Max grip upgrade kit, and a solid pinion crush sleeve. This stops the diff wearing itself out prematurely as the only thing that locks them up is wearing on the back face of the gears. The splines are there on them, but unused!

The wires at the connector on top of the rocker cover are going to break eventually, it should really be fixed somewhere with proper strain relief...

Must Agreed as the most underrated Toyota thanks to the powerplant. Run a non turbo all new poly bushings, remanufactured rack, camber plates, coilover conversion, beefier moog control arms, agx adjustable struts from mk2 mr2 250lb springs upfront 225lb rear , whiteline and addco sway bars makes it all very tight and predictable, and good steering angle in stock form. Pnp2 Megasquirt v3 board, maf delete, port and polished heads, oversized valve 270 cam w/.430lift, balanced rotating assembly header 2.5" custom exhaust. Tomei 6.7, 1.5 way that probably detonate under turbo. And still plays second to a stock miata in autox. But the drifts are as easy as cutting pizza slices. Worth it? 22re. Have a few cuts to help you decide if your are interested. Most videos are before the lsd and megasquirt. Have about the same amount of money in my 84 mustang.

The lumbar pump doesn't change the side bolsters. The pump inflates the lumbar bladder. The buttons release air from the bladders. To adjust the bolsters, there is a knob on the left side of the seat.
