- Question of the day:
In this video we discuss the often asked question. Do the voids that you find matter? Don't the engineers allow for them?
On this channel we show marketing free, real information about the bikes that you ride.

As one of my lecturers would say when I was studying ceramics, " Holes have no strength at any temperature"
Simon Howard Yep, and it creates a point of initiation of an incipient fault.
Where can I get a Luescher Teknik jersey! :)
Chapeau! You bring your points very neutral. I think they need really a quality improvement campaign in the factory. Why not scan every bike - at least those who cost a fortune.
To be honest you can have all the brand marketing hype you like I would prefer to pay a premium buying carbon anything from you, I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way.
I bet that most major manufacturers don't have the suggested QC Data, but they sure have made a risks/benefits analysis. Just like Ford did in the 70's with the PINTO Gas Tank or, more recently, GM with their key ignition switch. Guess what, your safety is NOT their job #1. Making money for their shareholders is !
If they had done studies then that shows they knew there was a problem and choose not to do anything about it. I presume they got into trouble for negligence.
I love your work and showing it on youtube, it's great fun to see the details and frame dissections on all the big frame manufacturers. Can you make a video about your bike, as far as i can tell you've hinted that you ride but not on off the shelf frame (is it custom made, made by you?), i think that video would be awesome. Cheers
I love your videos and have a question: could you cut a cheap carbon frame for example from aliexpress and compare it with a well known brand? I wonder if there are that big differences in material and layup .
As a rider of a counterfeit Cipollini NK1K I can tell you without even needing to cut up the frame that the lay up and compaction of the fiber layers are absolute crap. The head tube and down tube are full of wrinkles and there are stray sheets of fiber hanging around the water bottle bosses on both down and seat tube. That being said, 1.5 year, 14,000km and 2 car crashes later it's still going strong. I don't plan on riding that frame for more than 5 years though.
Oh, by the way, it's beyond me why they can create so many wrinkles down the inside of the steerer tube. It's absolutely shocking after watching all the videos on this channel.
Thanks for the honest opinion. But how do you know the internal condition of your bike frame without having cut it open?
I think you may have answered the question without purposely trying to. You mention Trek’s OCLV which stands for Optimum Compaction Low Void which speaks to the fact that they know there will be voids otherwise it should be OCNV for Optimum Compaction No Void.
What people need to understand is, if you have a weakness in a material that has a constant loading design, is it could initiate an incipient fault, this is a fault that hasn’t failed but is growing with fatigue or stress, this is the concern with a void in the material.
OCLV - only customer life verifies
Oh that's just mean! Here in Upstate NY it's -3F! ;)
How much do the bike frames you make weigh? Frame weights are getting lighter every year, using today's materials and manufacturing techniques what's is the lightest frame possible and still be usable in your opinion?Love to see a video of your bikes.
It's so critical.on structural components to have high QC.a carbon.bonnet, bumper, cod have a.void or two.and never an.issue muck like I've seen.fibreglass layups with.air pockets and never an.issue.
Is it possible to repair a seat stay, if so would it affect the riding characteristics or dampening properties?
My guess is that they don't account for voids when designing the parts simply because these videos show so many components that have failed where there is a void. If they had overbuilt the part so that it wouldn't fail in case of voids then they would not have failed.
I have Specialized Cirrus Pro 2017. Should I be worried?
I'm paranoid about my forks folding. Thanks
Can i buy one of those LT jerseys in Argentina???
How can we (the bike industry) ever get to point where we can tell the quality of a carbon frame or component, without having to cut it in half?
Consistent and thorough QC on the manufacturers part, then you can just buy from the reliable brands and know you're getting a good product. Is this what you meant?
Lite Roadie sort of. As we've seen from some of the cut ups, the inside revealed that the premium price paid for some higher end frames, didn't result in a better product. It's too bad it's not like Consumer Reports where they get feedback and can rate the quality of frame manufacturers
Two words: ultrasound
westpenncyclist what's the second word?
Most manufacturers have voids in their products. Most people don't have problems with their bikes breaking. So ok voids and imperfections may cause problems but it's not as dramatic as one would think.
I have a question. A few weeks ago my bike fell over(without me on it). It hit the alloy bike stand and now has a very small indentation on the top tube. If you didn't know it was there you wouldn't see it. Is this of any concern?
Thanks
Joel Smith : That dent is now a potential failure point under a given load. If it fails, it could be a progressive failure; or it could be an instantaneous failure. And whichever type, it could be hidden or exposed.
Is it true that Canyon x-rays every fork looking for voids before assembly? If so are they the only one?
they examine them not with x-rays but with ct (computer tomography scanner), what gives much better pictures (and yes, every fork and every frame). I don't know another brand doing that, but who knows...
Canyon don't make frames and forks, they only design and sell them. Quest Composites in Dongguan City, China make most of Canyon & Trek carbon frames.
of course! Nobody said they make their frames in Koblenz. But that does not matter - what matters: the forks and frames are checked in a computer tomographic scanner before they are assembled (in Koblenz, Germany)
If i would be carbonframe bilder😋. I would make top end frame with 95% weight saiving on mind. By puting few extra carbon on vital places where voids mainly occure. That is why carbon is handgrafted and no robots envolve. Human make most mistakes. There will allways be some frames that shouldent make the cut that go to enduser. And there is allways that frames come back if they broken. Then just have good customer service. So why worry about voids.
Alu have no voids. And novadays they make them more like idiotprofe acuracy. To get same acuracy on carbon you need more work hours and swett.😅
Someone donate an AliExpress frame to be reviewed!
I really wanna see some bored lawyers finally lose it and take action against Raoul. Will be hilarious watching them trying to do SOMETHING and just fail! Raul, be careful out there, these scumbags will do unimaginable things to keep their profit.
