I think the “overrated” part was where we’re all having trouble. But Angel isn’t coming from the perspective of just an audience member. She’s a WELL trained, classically trained actress. She knows what is necessary to fully develop a character. If you like at him from that angle, I get how she’s saying Denzel doesn’t really disappear with each character. I heard Billy Porter once say that it's harder being the lead character because all the attention is on you and as an actor you don't have anyone to play off of. All the side characters, props and context is dependent on you. All roads lead to you. As a side character of supporting actor, you have room space to blend in and play off of other actors and other spaces. I think part of why people like Denzel, Leo and let's say Brad Pitt don't transform anymore is because they are leading men, the stars of almost every movie they play in. For a while there they also released new movies almost every year. We saw their faces a lot. Part of disappearing into a character has to do with not always having the camera or spotlight on you. It's also sometimes that some people just have very distinctive mannerisms and personalities. The same for me with Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, Michael B Jordan, Beyonce etc. The only actor I can really think of that transforms: The LEGEND that is Meryl Streep. Even though you can still always see it's Meryl, you look forward to all the ways she's going to be a vessel and allow you to see into this character's world. Being a good actor is hard. Being a lead actor/actress seems even harder to me.

Kiah Sandy I mean, he’s not wrong because that’s exactly what he does. That’s Denzel’s niche (old tough guy). He CAN play other roles but when casting takes place, roles are filled depending on who fits them the best. They will always come to him with that role because it sells and people know what to KINDA expect from him before even watching the movie. Directors know it will be a hard pill to swallow for the viewers seeing him outside of his niche. Can you imagine Denzel as Deadpool? No! But I’m sure he’d do an amazing job nonetheless.
Most A listers aren’t the best “actors” imo. They usually have some “it” factor that drives their success. Similar to how the highest grossing movies usually aren’t the most critically acclaimed.
@Takeit Eez i was actually planning to see parasite about a week before i saw it won an award... i am still looking to see it. And Moonlight is in my top 3 favorite films. i love films that use silence as a huge part of the narrative. i also love films that critique and hold mirrors to society at large. To me, that's what good art does.
I just have to say this: I think Roman J Isreal Esquire was one of Denzel's best performances. It's one of my favorites at least. He played a very compelling character - a man who values justice above pretty much everything but whose experiences force him to compromise his ethics. It seemed like a very different role for him. I think he got an oscar nomination, but I wish the film as a whole got more praise. If you haven't seen it, then I would definitely recommend.

I think Angels true defense is the mannerisms of the role of the character the actor portrays. Leo in Django was spot on because he actually went off script during that broken skull scene and hurt himself and it got him gold. Jamie Foxx was almost the second guy during that scene. It's all about how the actor utilizes the characters mannerisms. In my opinion, you can replace Denzel, Will and Jeffery in alot of their movies with another actor. Guys like Jim Carrey, Johnny Depp, Laurence Fishburne and Leo Decaprio, it would be difficult to replace them in some of their respective movies.
Unlike everyone else on these unpopular opinions lol, Angel knows what she said makes sure everyone argues exactly what she said, not spin-off theories. I respect it.
I had recently watched Malcolm X. A then watched Who Killed Malcolm X on Netflix. Denzel played Malcolm to perfection. He even had the voice down packed.

I agree with her. I like Denzel movies but when I consider someone to be a great actor they play many different types of roles well. Denzel usually plays cops similar to Bruce Willis or Will Smith saving the world. It's a comfort thing. Can they play those roles great? Yes. Do I love most of their movies? Yes. Are they versatile and can play multiple types of genres well? I don't think so either.

I can’t imagine Denzel in a comedy. He’s no Gary Oldman. He’s a dang chameleon. Denzel is just not the best at acting. He HAS to have roles where it’s suited to his personality.
So he’s a GREAT ACTOR but he’s not the best in the sense that he has ZERO range. He’s AWESOME as Denzel.

I heard Billy Porter once say that it's harder being the lead character because all the attention is on you and as an actor you don't have anyone to play off of. All the side characters, props and context is dependent on you. All roads lead to you. As a side character of supporting actor, you have room space to blend in and play off of other actors and other spaces. I think part of why people like Denzel, Leo and let's say Brad Pitt don't transform anymore is because they are leading men, the stars of almost every movie they play in. For a while there they also released new movies almost every year. We saw their faces a lot. Part of disappearing into a character has to do with not always having the camera or spotlight on you. It's also sometimes that some people just have very distinctive mannerisms and personalities. The same for me with Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, Michael B Jordan, Beyonce etc. The only actor I can really think of that transforms: The LEGEND that is Meryl Streep. Even though you can still always see it's Meryl, you look forward to all the ways she's going to be a vessel and allow you to see into this character's world. Being a good actor is hard. Being a lead actor/actress seems even harder to me.

And Moonlight is in my top 3 favorite films. i love films that use silence as a huge part of the narrative. i also love films that critique and hold mirrors to society at large. To me, that's what good art does.

I just have to say this: I think Roman J Isreal Esquire was one of Denzel's best performances. It's one of my favorites at least. He played a very compelling character - a man who values justice above pretty much everything but whose experiences force him to compromise his ethics. It seemed like a very different role for him. I think he got an oscar nomination, but I wish the film as a whole got more praise. If you haven't seen it, then I would definitely recommend.

I think Angels true defense is the mannerisms of the role of the character the actor portrays. Leo in Django was spot on because he actually went off script during that broken skull scene and hurt himself and it got him gold. Jamie Foxx was almost the second guy during that scene. It's all about how the actor utilizes the characters mannerisms. In my opinion, you can replace Denzel, Will and Jeffery in alot of their movies with another actor. Guys like Jim Carrey, Johnny Depp, Laurence Fishburne and Leo Decaprio, it would be difficult to replace them in some of their respective movies.
Unlike everyone else on these unpopular opinions lol, Angel knows what she said makes sure everyone argues exactly what she said, not spin-off theories. I respect it.

I agree with her. I like Denzel movies but when I consider someone to be a great actor they play many different types of roles well. Denzel usually plays cops similar to Bruce Willis or Will Smith saving the world. It's a comfort thing. Can they play those roles great? Yes. Do I love most of their movies? Yes. Are they versatile and can play multiple types of genres well? I don't think so either.
