Fam, I am ready to pop off. First of all, FRIENDS STOLE THEIR CONCEPT FROM LIVING SINGLE, this is an actual fact. They stole the idea, gave them a significantly larger budget + salaries, and put the show at the same time as Living Single to jack their audience. Queen Latifah and John Henton both discuss this. Even the Friends characters were a rip-off of the Living Single characters. Pheobe was a whitewashed, untalented, darker version of Synclaire. Shallow Rachel was Regine. Monica (although I loved her character) was a wannabe Khadijah (whose name has historical significance), the simple nature of Overton became Joey who they continued to dumb down. Chandler's sarcasm was based on the smooth, witty, and educated demeanor of Kyle Barker who was more like Joey in terms of women. YOU CAN NOT BRING UP THE SHOW THAT HAD LESS THAN 5 BLACK PEOPLE IN ITS TEN YEAR RUN.

Secluded One • I will *slightly* acknowledge the point of scripted v. ad lib. I think what makes black sitcoms better is they don’t always stick to a script completely. So scripted comedy (white) can come off better if sticking to script is what one likes.

Sadly I felt her! 😩 But that is probably because I grew up watching way more of the white sitcoms than the black ones so it reminds me of my childhood. I didn’t see Living Single till I was in my late 20s but watched Friends in high school. But as I have gotten older and gotten to watch black sitcoms I’m starting to like them. With that said I didn’t learn that there was still racism until high school too so my whole life was backwards 🤦🏾♀️ .
