Volo also did one of the biggest rule breaks throughout his boss battle. He technically used EIGHT Pokémon against your 6. That giratina jumps jumpscares you twice. Once when it first shows up. And again with that guitar rift.

@@-libertyprimev1-902 At least you could remove one of Greevil's pokemon (Shadow Lugia being the main intended one, most likely) with your master ball, unless you're challenging yourself to not use it, or you used it already.

@@QizLizWiz true but I mean by that logic all his Pokemon are Shadow, so you usually want to catch them all anyways (which includes 3 other Legendaries), unless you're willing to wait for the Miror B Radar.
On the Master Ball point many actually prefer to save it for his team of 6 because Shadow Lugia on its own is Significantly easier to catch in comparison* to the 3 Legendary Birds in a Double Battle, which still costs you a one time item regardless.

    • @QizLizWiz
      @QizLizWiz 3 місяці тому

@@-libertyprimev1-902 this doesn't really apply for blind plays where one may try to catch everything on first encounter, but don't his shadow pokemon still stay on him if you don't catch them, as you can keep fighting him again?
And yeah saving the master ball for one of the birds is the better play, but it's pretty funny to just instantly catch the major shadow pokemon the game's been hyping up, and I feel those playing blindly may do so.

Metroid Dread really did a good job building up Raven Beak. As much as people memed about it when the game was brand new, him pretending to be Adam for seemingly the whole game, as well as his involvement with the Metroids and X, helped with his build up and made it all the more satisfying to actually fight him once everything was revealed. The fact that his actual fight is one of the best definitely helps. Putting every one of your abilities to the test, and keeping you on your toes with quick and varied attacks, it made the whole experience a blast. Also, the way he goes down.... Damn, Samus.

Cause each time he gets something new that drastically changes the boss with the first fight just being him with the Yamato his second fight him using Beowulf and his devil trigger alongside the Yamato and his last fight using forced edge and his super attacks with devil trigger and the Yamato and it just shows how he really is Dante’s brother with him using new weapons to get stronger and stronger just like Dante does

Using the Legend of Zelda as an example it could be something as simple as using the dungeon item you got earlier to win, or as intricate as the last fight with Ghirahim showing how far you’ve come mastering the same sword mechanics that you struggled with in his first fight.

One of my favorite bosses ever is Reflux (final boss) from Rayman 3. He fits in the story perfectly and you interact with him -- hell you already beat him once in the middle of the game. But then the main villain uses him for power and to allow him to seek revenge on us and he becomes extremely powerful. The atmosphere is really cool too, you're on the top of a tall tower, the music is incredible, etc. I regularly come back to this boss just for this.

At least for chapter 3, we interact with him a bit, has a memorable personality, and his boss music is amazing. Plus in his fight by taking away Hat kid's hat you lose your special abilities for his fight. Plus a side bonus, he plays a role for the Death Wish mode.

With how poor a parent that Sada and Turo were. I genuinely wonder what kinds of choice words Arven, Nemona, and Penny would have towards the original professors if time travel let them meet them.
Personally, I think a great example in terms of Atmosphere and Subversion would be the finale of Kirby Planet Robobot. Like after beating Haltmann you'd think he'd undergo a drastic transformation like Sectonia in Triple Deluxe but thanks to Susie, we face off against Star Dream who erases Haltmann and decides to end all biological life. Then as Kirby merges his Robobot Armor with the Halberd we get to face off against Star Dream who's taken control of the Access Ark which dwarfs the moon and covers most of Popstar as frantic yet epic music plays.

Luca Blight from Suikoden II is my favorite boss fight sequence of all time. The whole game up to that point has presented him as the main villain and a complete monster. Dude is just a human, but finally taking him down requires winning an army battle, strategically outmaneuvering him, then fighting him with THREE separate 6-person parties, while also being littered with arrows between those fights, and even then he still needs a one on one duel before finally succumbing, and even then he just gloats about how much it took to kill him, all while he killed by the thousands. And then the shocker that he wasnt even the final boss and you're only like 2/3 through the game...

His white suit is very similar to other Law representatives like the SMT I law Hero and Zelenin as well as his good intencions turn evil due to radicalization. As well as his absolute faith in a benevolent god that happens to be himself.

Corrupted/Adult Cynder from The Legend of Spyro A New Beginning is a amazing fight with amazing build up, the 2nd Phase of the Second Fight is the best because of Spyro obtaining Aether after being hit by her Dark/Dark Aether/Nether Fire Fury blast as you're near the end of your life then Dark Spyro fighting Gaul, the one who commanded the raid of your birth and stole Cynder's Egg is also amazing with access to Dark Aether/Nether with a finish on the Ape King that's just shocking and then Malefor is the best finale for the big threat which has a build up and reveal of the Dark Master, reason why I love TLOS spin off over the OG and Skylanders series.
In conclusion, the Trilogy of TLOS had amazing final bosses with really insane powers you use especially with Dark Spyro and Aether and ties to important things, the 3 Bosses have importance to our character's entire life and all scenes show how terrible it affects him & Cynder and the second and third being terrible individuals.

So I don’t disagree with anything you said, however there are different ways to make a boss compelling and it depends on the their role in the story being told.
One thing you brought up is subversion, however if a boss is presented as super difficult in the work they live in and they meet those expectations. Also their relationship with the main character/cast, either a shared past or their views being diametrically opposed but also held just as strong (which you can put in narrative)
Some examples are Manfred Von Karma from the original Ace Attorney game, presented as a demon prosecutor with an unbeaten 40 year win streak with complete control in the court room that doesn’t lose his cool as fast as other prosecutors do (and it takes a while to get him sweating but when you do it feels earned and good), the Black Knight in Path of Radiance being unable to be damaged at all and then the build up to the final match up and the history between him and Ike. But overall good video

Roquefort's boss music stayed with me way longer than the others from Hi-fi Rush, the rest is very good but this one is just epic (too bad the "streamer" one is way weaker).
Also the boss being described as a "wolf in sheep's clothing" and his associated music being originally made by WOLFgang, you can tell that someone had a blast creating it.
In the subversion department, Andrew Ryan from Bioshock is pretty great, the build up, the reveal and the payoff of this boss you're fighting are all amazing.

A fairly recent hack-and-slash/character action type of game by name of Soulstice had a very solid selection of bosses (perhaps bar the Weavers). The game's main cast is fairly small, like in DMC3, but the bosses' presence as characters and showcasing the nature of the type of creature the main characters belong to (two souls grafted into a single mortal body to strike both in the material and spectral plane) persists both strongly before and after their demises, and i think the twins Jared & Jadon are the strongest of all with that.
Very much recommend looking into that one.

I say The Radiance fits many of the criteria. 4/5 of them.
[spoilers if you haven't played hollow knight]
    - Through lore found, we're given her personality, a jealous and vengeful goddess, light itself, enemy of the void, lashing out at the kingdom that forgot her for a new ruler.
    - She has relatively well telegraphed attacks, forcing you to make use of every movement mechanic you've gained throughout in order to avoid taking two masks of damage. While the fight is incredibly difficult, it's supposed to be, and supposed to feel less fair. You are struggling against one of the world's two *gods*.
    - Throughout the entire game, The Radiance is shown to be a threat, taking the minds of Hallownest that The Pale King granted them. Returning to two masks of damage, bosses that do that almost always have ties to *immense* power.[Nightmare King Grimm and Pure Vessel for example.]
    - The Radiance is one of few bosses that you have to explicitly challenge. Not merely walk into an arena. On top of that, you have to beat the Sealed Vessel, the final boss in almost every other ending. And her music is like that of a choir's, signing praise to a god.
there are a lot of hollow knight bosses that might fit, but rad/absrad is at the top of the list for me

I think the final boss of Megaman Zero 3 does a really good job on most of these.
Omega, the large robot with a huge sword was the boss of the intro stage, where you were introduced to the villain Dr. Weil who commanded him. Then when you reach the final stage, there's an improved version that isn't too bad to fight, but of course, now it has 3 phases. The second phase gets even bigger, as you are both falling through the air, a classic second phase of a Megaman final boss, a huge robot. Weil has commentary before each phase, telling you that Omega has a few surprises left, taunting Zero by asking if he's had fun being playing hero.
Then the final phase, after destroying the gigantic form of Omega, they land in the area where Zero started in the first Zero game, when he was awoken. And Dr. Weil tells him that he is a fake, a mere copy of the original Zero, because the original Zero is Omega. And suddenly the pile of debris is destroyed as a cutscene of Omega, a silhouette identical to that of Zero, is revealed. Weil says that he upgraded Omega, made him the true god of destruction that he was meant to be. And then, the fight starts, with Omega saying "Ware wa Messiah Nare" or "I am the Messiah!" before laughing evilly. So narratively, Omega is pretty built up, this is the Omega that was banished, along with Dr. Weil, for their deeds in the Cyber Elf Wars, a war which killed off 75% of the human population of the world. This Omega is Zero's original body, and can do things the player can do, but better, able to fire multiple charge shots and a sword beam, his charged saber slash is larger than the player's, and Omega can use moves similar to super moves from Zero in the X series, sending waves of energy in a semi circle across the screen by hitting the ground or slashing in the air. He can also heal a decent amount with one move.
Narratively, it's great, a final fight against oneself at the end of a multi phase gauntlet of fights. The persona may be a little lacking, but shouting that you are the Messiah is pretty good, and Weil does a lot of the talking (you do fight him in the next game).
The atmosphere is good! Cannon Ball is a great song, very intense for that final phase, and the music in the cutscenes leading up to the reveal is also appropriate. The mechanics aren't totally crazy, it is mostly a boss fight, but it's the first 3 phase fight in the Zero series, and the first to have a boss that can just heal a couple of your charged attacks while invincible for free. The fight is primarily a test of your skill, finding the right timings for attacking and for dodging. The subversion is also great. The narrative reveal is great, but also the reveal that the final boss's huge form isn't the end, but the final form is the same size as you is unique among the Zero series, where every other time it's always a larger form of the first phase with big telegraphed attacks. This is also generally true of the X series, where it's usually just big Sigma is the final boss. (This is not true of the first X game, and some of the others).
Even the classic series, it's always some large machine that Wily is piloting, although it does tend to get smaller during the Wily Capsule phase.
So yeah, that's why I think Omega from Megaman Zero 3 is pretty good.

I'd add the underlying element of presentation to the mix. It doesn't matter how good all the elements are separately because if they dont mesh into a satisfying and bone-chilliing fight that you'll remember from time to time, then it all falls flat.
We remember good bosses from games because of how they've been presented to us.

On the Adam side of things is before the start actual ADAM calls samus Lady. a detail that come from metroid fusion and one that is subtle but important. throughout the climb of the game every single time you contact ADAM through the concles he never calls samus Lady only Samus this is so subble its ealisly missed only at the end is when ADAM actually gets in contact and you know by the AI calling her Lady.'

Honestly from my views. If I were to think of one boss that had the Atmosphere and Narrative is Soul of Cinder the final boss from Dark Souls 3.
Sure Persona wise..he's just a knight looking boss who uses the bonfire as a weapon. Mechanics wise. He can switch weapons on the fly like you the player and use plenty of stuff that you can use. Only to a greater extent. But Narrative wise..even though it's left ambiguous and lore heavy. This being was indeed the souls of everyone who linked the flame. Whether it be previous kings or you the player.
For Atmosphere..your fighting him in a massive graveyard of ash, weapons, and the setting is like that of the end of the world is happening. The music is also beautiful as well. So yeah that's one of my favorite examples of a boss fight.

    • @Jeddy2
      @Jeddy2 3 місяці тому

I agree 100%. Soul of Cinder will always be one of my favorite bosses in any game.
The implementation of the boss switching weapons and playstyles throughout the fight being tied narratively to it being an amalgamation of all the different players/lords who've linked the fire in the past is such a cool idea.
That combined with the setting and music of the fight (especially once the reprisal of Gwyn's theme kicks in) giving you the feeling that you're basically fighting this boss as the world finally crumbles after 3 games of the cycle being extended hopelessly.
It's such a fantastic final battle, nailing you with nostalgia and memories from the whole series for one last hoorah. No other boss fight from any of FromSoft's games has elicited as much of an emotional response from me.

TBH, I saw this video while I was doing a personal project ranking my favorite 20 videogames and I have noticed that a lot of them don't have great boss fights.
RimWorld before Biotech had the endings that can be challenging but not bosses in the normal definition, and even the ones introduced in Biotech aren't nothing to talk about, and RimWorld is my second favorite game. But thinking of the top of my head there's one that I will always love due to its atmosphere. Yharon the Jungle Dragon from Terraria Calamity Mod; I love this Mod's OST, but my surprise when I heard lyrics in this boss fight really took me off guard, and the fact the lyrics are his final message to Calamitas the final boss of the entire mod says a lot. Another ones I love due to narrative and atmosphere are the ones in Darkest Dungeon, but if I have to highlight 2, oddly enough aren't the final boss. The Fanatic & The Brigand Vvulf, I choose these two mainly due to their atmosphere, in the case of the Fanatic is more of its impact on the community, in a world we have Eldlitch horrors beyond human comprehension the fact that one of the scariest bosses is a simple human with a fanatic (haha get it?) obsession for purity and the banishment of vampires says a lot and the song is something I didn't knew I would love, Hearing the constant screams of his victims burnt in the stake actually was so good that inspired me a lot. While The Brigand Vvulf, Most of the bosses in the game are in multiple dungeons and in the case of bosses like the Fanatic & The Collector being ones that can randomly appear in dungeons, but all of them respect the sacred understanding that the town is the safe heaven in this corrupted land. But what happens when said town is the field of battle, the main reason why I think the Fanatic is scary is due to the looming treat of being somewhere but not knowing where. The Brigand takes that to a new level I admire a lot, they can randomly decide to invade the town and with the best 4 characters you have you'll have to defend the only save heaven, and the music really makes that point across. And before I go the Joy Mutants in Lisa the Painful, a game which has a soundtrack is so chaotic and never stops even in it's more calm themes like Summer love decides to stay so silent in a boss fight says a lot, because what kind of world you live in in which a creature like this would exist, mainly as most of them have 1 move that can kill your party members, and not moves that will drop their live to 0, I'm talking moves that hits them so hard that you no longer can use them on the run because they got completely annihilated.

A lot of final bosses in Pokémon does a good job (though not all of them), and I would say that a lot of bosses in Kirby does too, at least with music and presentation, Magolor doing good with the subversion. Though I guess the subversion now is whenever a new helpful pal of Kirby doesn't turn out to be evil.
Raven Beak was an incredible final boss (hard as heck too).

This might make you happy if you're the kinda essayist who cares a lot about making people think, but watching this video gets me thinking if there's any bosses I truly like in a gameplay sense, that highlight their game mechanics. There's a ton of bosses I really like as characters (sundowner, armstrong, brachydios, fighting fafnir, maruki and so many others), there's bosses I breathed a sigh of relief after beating to the point where I sometimes itch to go back in there (fume knight) and some bosses which were just a spectacle to see (the dragon in sekiro) or an absolute delight music-wise (the gladiator demon from doom, onikage and mei-oh from the first tenchu, KUZE) but rake my brain as I might I can't think of any boss that I've faced which I'd consider the climax of the game's gameplay in a way that elevates the experience barring MAYBE sword saint isshin, since I don't remember much of that fight but I feel a rush every time I think of it.
And I find that...interesting. I know for a FACT there must be a boss that just elevates gameplay, I am pretty sure vergil and sam should fill that niche but for some reason they just...didn't. Sam was pretty neat but vergil just...idk, it felt like I couldn't style on him and his moves certainly didn't style on me, it felt kinda like a duel but then I see what other people do and I just don't get how.

*Spoilers for Blaster Master Zero trilogy*
*but mostly just Blaster Master Zero 3*
The true final boss fight of Blaster Master Zero 3 was one of the coolest final boss fights that I've experienced and it kind of has all 5 of the elements listed in this video.
Subversion: So the big twist in the true ending sequence is that you aren't actually playing as the original protaginist, Jason Frudnick, you are playing as Kane Gardener, the leader of the sophia force, Eve's father, and he also serves as kind of rival/ally to Jason throughout the game (there's also a bunch of meta shit because Kane was the protag of the Japanese version of Blaster Master, called Meta Fight and while that is relevent, it'd take a while to explain the implications behind that).
Mechanics: so the final boss fight does something, that I've personally never seen before and was super cool to me, basically at the end of the cutscene leading up to the final boss you can basically pick who you play as in the final boss fight. You can choose Jason and have all the over powered abilities you gathered throughout the main story of the game and have a pretty easy final boss, or you can choose to play as Kane and use the Metal Attacker from the first Blaster Master game and have a much more challenging final boss against Jason who uses all of the powers you collected throughout the game against you. This fight is also a really cool parallel to the beginning of the game where Jason has to fight Kane before getting all of the upgrades for his tank.
Narrative: I'll try not to summarize the whole plot of the game, but basically after the final boss of the main story Eve basically banishes herself into super dimensional space, accepting her role as the mutant queen, and Jason vows to go after her and reverse her fate. There's then implied to be a time skip and you're lead to believe that you're playing as Jason finally going into super dimensional space to find Eve (but its not revealed until the end that you're playing as Kane) and you basically fight all of the MA pilots you met in BMZ 2 who all say they're trying to protect Eve from you, even that edgy asshole Leibniz tries to hold you off. And when you finally get to Eve, who blocks your path? Its Jason the guy you're meant to believe tou are playing as, until Kane takes his helmet off and confronts Jason face to face. Idk if everyone who played it was as impressed as I was with the twist, but I though it was really cool and well done. Its also just a really cool battle between protagonists
Atmosphere: the final boss theme "The Final Metafight" is apparently a remix of the regular boss theme of the NES Blastermaster, but even without knowing that the boss theme goes super hard and is one of the best tracks of the whole trilogy imo. There's also the fact that mid fight you move from Super Dimensional Space to fighting im front of the Earth
Persona: the one category from this video that is probably the least prominent in this fight is persona, there's still a lot of emotional weight to the fight, but Kane is a very straight laced, duty-oriented kind of guy, and isn't really trying to stop Jason and Eve because he wants to, but because he feels its the only way to keep the Planet Sophia safe from the Mutants. And Jason's motivation is his devotion and loyalty to Eve, because he sacrificed pretty much everything, even his own physical form to be with her and protect her.
TL;DR: play the Blaster Master Zero trilogy its so fucking good and not enough people have played it.

most xenoblade bosses are pretty fantastic, but I have to give the award to Amalthus from 2, due to how cathartic it is to kick his ass after learning about everything he did throughout the story, and especially after playing torna. He's the perfect foil to Rex's optimism, he's a man who has lost faith in humanity and wishes nothing but total destruction of the world and all who inhabit it.

    • @darkkwaknight

Okay I will try the best I can. Fatalis is the god of all monsters in the monster hunter series and it destroyed a entire kingdom in a night leaving no one left alive. He is the final goal for the best hunters to take him down.
But Fatalis has a deep hatred for humanity and in lore and gameplay its know when hunters are defeated or killed he will melt them are their armour to its self to make its self stronger and to mock the hunters as in game you hunt the monster to be able to craft weapons and armour. This shows how much fatalis hates humans and will mock them by doing the same they do to become stronger.
In gameplay he is one of the hardest fights in the series he can mostly one or two shot you if your unprepared he puts all your skills to the test for example using the environment to you advanced and targeting weak points to do more damage and break parts to make the fight easier and makes you master your weapon.
As you fight him he gets stronger the more you fight and after a percentage of his health is removed he will do his super more it will one shot no matter how much health or defence you got you have to take cover and watch as the sea of fire melts everything around you when he finishes he will fly down and have new moves to throw at you and use new combos in the fight. After you dealt enough damage to him he will do the super move again but this time you have to run behind a metal gate to shield yourself.
After he is finished he will fly down and go into a super mode which he will not come out of until you or him dies and if you have not broken his horns his fire will be blue which will most likely one shot you and make it really hard to fight him and he will unlock more moves and combos to add on top of his massive move pool.
There is a way to weaken his fire breaking the horns will weaken his flames and make it less likely for you to get one shot and give you a fight chance at winning.
He will do his super move 3 times near the end at different percentages at some point in the fight or after some time there will be a massive weapon to use on fatalis called the dragonator when you use it on fatalis it will do massive damage to him and play the original monster hunter theme from the first game.
When you beat him you are reward with the most powerful armour and weapons in the game.
For me fatalis is a perfect final boss as he puts all you have learned through the game and makes you master everything you know and you can do to help you in the fight.

I'd say Baby Bowser from Yoshi Island (SNES) does most of these justice.
The only element it fails the most in my opinion? Narrative. Cause Kamek was seen as the antagonist, sure bowser was mentioned... but even when fighting Bowser. It's just a spoiled child being buffed with magic.
Mechanics change from something you know with a new element.
It subverts everything, even the music.
Atomsphere is tense as this happy go lucky game suddenly becomes a METAL SONG WITH A GIANT SCARY BOWSER.
Persona , okay maybe weak here too, but from Spoiled Brat to one of the most epic things ever in gaming wich starts a trend of it? Heck yes.
And then we got giant bowser fights from this... some bad.. but i like to highlight 4 of them. 2 good, 2 bad.
The bad ones? Yoshi Island Sequels. Namely Yoshi Island DS and New Yoshi Island. I think the Wooly World and Crafted World did okay, but not amazing.
The Yoshi Island DS one... is just not menancing, it's just a goofy big adult bowser in the top screen and the mechanic is the fact you gotta line up 4 shots in 1 big one. For the rest Bowser in the top is just throwing stuff at you.. unlike the SNES one where he looms in the background, getting closer and closer!
The New Yoshi Island one are just watered down versions of the SNES one. Also "Out of nowhere through space and time, king bowser appears." Yea they just put adult bowser in for no reason.. but atleast his standard fight is a nice subversion.. but his giant form.. is just the giant form you did before.. but with more crap going on. BOO!
Then the best two that came out of this fight. New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Bowser's Fury.
NSMB:Wii since while it does do the Yoshi island thing of setting it up... the execution is amazing. Insted of fighting him, you are running from Bowser, having him tear through the envoirment so you can get safe to the end. It's a simple and effective way wich spun off into it's "own" sub genre of Bowser fights. "The run to the end fights." Some good, some okay.
That's why the Wii one is on the list.. and it kinda ticks all the boxes better then it's older brother of Yoshi Island.
And Bowser's Fury.. do I even have to explain this one? Sure you fight it 3 times in the game.. but...I do not have to explain anything of this game.. especially the build up to the final fight.
"Bowser is too angry, the catshines cannot hold him off" When I saw this.. I was like: "OH shit! I need 2 more shines and Bowser WONT buzz off!"
And of course the final final fight is a variation of "Run to the end." but also a subversion as you are chasing Bowser and dodging his attacks to plonk that orb into him.
Yea that's it.. just giant bowser fights. The original, The good and the bad. And why a giant bowser fight can get you pumped up!

Just finished Persona 5 Royal. I thought Maruki is a great final boss. Partially because his offer is very tempting. It is such an ideal world, and his intentions are good for it. But besides just struggle, Maurki's plan removes choice. Your perfect life is what he thinks is best for you, to the point of you getting mind wiped and rewritten to believe its for your best. But love his dungeon design, great boss fight, and just a great conclusion to an already great story.
Worth nothing, I think his plan would fall apart eventually, as the expanding people could cause his perfect reality to fall. Trying to accommodate the rest of the world, I think would eventually stretch his mind too much, not even accounting for how exactly new children would complicate things. If you look around the world, you can see NPC's collapse from partying too much, talking about exhaustion from working too much, but they can't stop just because they are so happy doing it. I really like if you look, you can already see cracks starting to form in his perfect world. But I know its a rant all this, I really loved that game.

I'm a biiiiig FFXIV player and Savage raider, and, my god, the P12s fight is soooo good. The theming, the music... **chef's kiss**
One of the neat things about this boss's attacks is that they come from disproven theories as (massive condensing of information) they're basically an ancient scientist that is trying to become God. The attacks reflect their *very* limited knowledge of how the world/life/souls work. Their final, raid wiping attack, is called "Ignorabimus" from the saying "ignoramus et ignorabimus" meaning "We do not know and will not know" comes from her having a mental breakdown at the end and destroys *everything.*
Oh, and the music that plays also takes parts from other songs from the raids (P4, P6/7, and maybe 8?) just to show how much of a hand they had in the whole storyline. You can hear echos of the song in P12 in the songs of P9 and P10 to help build the tension for what would be the final confrontation.
