my guess on lucifer's diarahan is it's a workaround to give him much more health than the basic game allows. you mentioned he had 64k health, which is pretty close to 65,535 limit that a 16 bit integer has. they probably wanted him to have 100k health, which is why it triggers after taking 40k damage and only once.
He actually has the cap of 65535 HP, I think your guess is correct, this is also how they did dor FFIV and FFVI advance they have bosses that have over that cap, the way Square did it is the game secretly heal the boss after a certain point which give the illusion he has over 100k, the Diarahan here has the same effect, only that it's clearly visible XD

3:04 I actually found this out myself by accident. I played the USA Dante version and wanted to play the Maniax version. So when I got the Maniax version, I went to load games and saw all my saves in the Dante version. It was one of the biggest confusing moments I ever had, and I am glad someone else found this out!

I love that the save format is literally identical. They just replaced what was actually at all of Dante's memory addresses I have to wonder if a JP PS2 would let you load up saves for the wrong version, or if the system knows they're separate games
i tried on my ps2, the save is the same as smt nocturne, even the data (on hexadecimal) for raidou/dante is the same, only the game read that data a bit diferent with raidou
27:40 I have a feeling that they wanted to give Lucifer 100,000 HP, but couldn't because the value for for HP is stored as a 16-bit number (since he heals for exactly 65535, the highest possible 16-bit number) so they just gave him a special behavior to cast Diarahan once after his HP hits ~20k.

@@JackFrostAegirine I can personally attest that all of SJ:R is possible demonless; I've done it myself. Shekinah is _theoretically_ possible on a standard run, but it basically requires more RNG than Nyarly got for Ahriman here. I chose to finish the game on Old Chaos without demons, NG+, then using the NG+ equipment, beat Shekinah on New Law. That way, I also fought all the bosses the game had to offer (except Awake Jimenez and Judge Zelenin, but let's be real, those are just weaker versions of their Soil and Pillar forms anyway).
And just a thing, you can get Freikugel before the Isamu fight. It is possible to just walk past Isamu's boss fight and reach to spot where you can get the Magatama that teaches it.

you could do kagutsushi without debuffs, however the game would turn into a grind fest, nocturne intern max level is 255 ( yes you can still lv up after 99, the game cant track your lv after that) your dmg dealt/received scales not only with stats but also with lv difference, so a max lv MC would do enough dmg to by pass the dmg of kagutsushi PS: The intern Max lv maybe 65535 if the lv variable is 16-bits, 255 if it is 8-bits, i dont remember the size of the variable, however the case the grind fest still the same
@@aegisScale nah, if lv max you do tons of dmg, after watching randomizer runs done by ChanpionmBeef, some times demons would have underflows to lv max, there was a pisaca that 2-shot lucifer with 35k dmg

I don't consider the fact that kagutsuchi does 1.6k damage without buffs and he can't do anything to stop it a failure. All the suffering he went through is commendable and really impressive. He still beat Kagutsuchi and Lucifer without any buffs
I think the reason why Luicifer casts Diarahan is because his max HP may have been up to the integer limit, so Atlus had a workaround. A really, dickbag style workaround.
Dude... YOU SAVED MY ASS I’ve been using this series as a true demon ending pseudo walkthrough for smt3 remaster, and the Noah boss fight had me stuck for almost an hour. I was about ready to start over, but when you said tekisatsu with raidou, that gave me the damage push I needed to kill him. I never thought it would work because I thought it was physical, and he always reflects that. But seriously, thank you.

Sounds similar to a boss that has 13 phases with 2500 hp each, and a 14th phase with 6000 hp in which it resists everything, and can make a party member heal the boss.

Honestly, it makes sense in a strange way that the game still works. They really are nearly identical and in an emulator, there's no weird region-locking so with the only difference in the code being a model and some text (along with a flag to make the skill have Pierce), it's the same game.

Pointless Fun Fact: Watching this channel made me feel like doing a run through of an old SMT game. Given Devil Survivor 2 was the only one I hadn't completed I decided stuff it. Amusing to hear you might be doing a no fusion run on Devil Survivor after I started the exact same thing for Devil Survivor 2 (Record Breaker) For far it's not too painful, then again I'm not anywhere near the end of the game. If anything my only complaint is the more limited access to racial abilities.

Hey, you nearly beat it all without buffs/debuffs, and that's pretty cool Sucks that kagutsuchi was such a huge challenge that you had to break the rules, but it's still pretty amazing that you could even get that far
I remember in about August of 2019 which was when I had started my first actual playthrough of Persona 5/P5 (first ATLUS game ever to my memory, and I got the game in January, tried it but got bored at first) and eventually completed it fully 3 times a month later, after forcing myself to. I enjoyed it so much I decided to get the platinum trophy/achievement for the game as it was one of my first ever RPGs, let alone JRPGs, as well as it being one of my most favourite games. Also, it’s one of my most favourite turn-based games but is most certainly not one of my first ever played. I have been quite the fanatic of P5 but not to the point of where, like certain people, the game is life and almost essentially having to sacrifice my soul to it. Luckily I hadn’t fallen in that trap... I guess? At some point after watching A LOT of P5 videos on UA-cam, I decided to watch some of Nyarly’s (your) videos about the history of the Shin Megami Tensei/SMT games and videos relating to P5. Eventually (I overuse that word a lot, I’m sorry) when you uploaded the first part of the ‘SMT: Nocturne No Buff/Debuff’ challenge, I decided (this word too, again, sorry) to “watch the first few minutes of the video” I said to myself ending up being hooked in and watching the entire thing without skipping a single part of the video. I’m glad that I had done so because this has taught me not to grasp on a singular thing all the time as things eventually become old/outdated. When I noticed you uploaded the second part of the challenge, I immediately clicked in excitement but more in pure curiosity both if the challenge was possible and what the original SMT titles were like. Now I have to admit, P5 was and, from the time I wrote this, still is the only SMT related title I had ever played. Never played P4, P3, P2: Innocent Sin, P2: Eternal Punishment, and Revelations: Persona, as well as SMT1, SMT2, SMTIf..., SMT: Nine, SMT: Nocturne, SMT: Imagine, SMT: Strange Journey, SMT4, and SMT4: Apocalypse (SMT5 when?), and with that being said, I don’t necessarily have a say in comparing any game. The games in general, and of my ‘first glance-like’ interest being P4, P3, and now SMT: Nocturne, would really be fun to play, If... (pun intended) I can ever own them and the platform or console to play them on, and I would possibly enjoy every one bit of them as much as, or even more, who knows, P5. It surely was great being along this journey as a viewer as it was both entertaining and was quite an ‘on-edge’ journey-like experience (cannot think of a word relating to ‘that’). I wish I could’ve re-lived that experience again, at least one more time, and hopefully you do more challenges in the SMT and/or Persona series (if not, understandable). It was also sad how you got to the second last fight of the entire game where you literally ran straight into a figuratively impassible wall and had to officially stop the entire challenge. You were so close to completing it, hopefully there is a way and if not, then all hope is now lost... I am also terribly sorry for anyone reading this entire story and a half of a comment which is actually, and quite possibly, my longest comment ever. So... *TL;DR:* Persona 5 is the only SMT title I’d ever played, I wish I could play other Persona and SMT titles, I enjoyed a lot of Persona-related videos and videos done by Nyarly (yourself), I enjoyed the experience of the challenge you went through but yet it was sad that Nyarly (you) wasn’t(/weren’t) able to complete it, and lastly, I am not an out-right Persona 5 addict, just so anyone knows.
Loving these videos, I have only played the persona games and it is nice to see and experience the Megatin games I will probably never play. Please keep them coming 🙏🏻

now obviously I know this is a challenge series and not meant to cover every aspect of the game, but the way you paraphrase this play through and some of the story bits to string it all together seems like a really interesting way to condense a game for viewers who may not have access to it. significantly shorter than a vod or edited series, and much meatier than a wiki article. including the bits about your experience and strategy is engaging as well. this series does a good job for what it is, it just got my thoughts running on the possible applications for this format.
Oh, it's cool that you're considering Devil Survivor for the next challenge In my opinion, Nocturne is Megaten at its finest. Great and dreadful designs from Kaneko, brilliant music from Shoji Meguro (Staff Roll is the best in portraying the hopelessness of the game, yet with smooth and warm tones to congratulate you on your journey), interesting story with keeping the basement of the series (choosing what you believe in), yet deviating from it by choosing reasons rather then alignments, awesome implementation of the press-turn system(imo it's better than SMT IV, maybe it's just because i stuck with Nocturne way more than with IV) All of these make up a great game and the best Megaten out there
Dude this run had me thrilled to see if you can do it. I'm sad that it took the final two bosses on this run to not make this complete, but it seems like in theory no buffs/debuffs run can be done on a different ending or on a lower difficulty. You got a fan with this run.
Fun Fact: Noah has a 90% resistance to Almighty. Also, you can skip Noah and go to the Manikin "town" early; that way you could've had Freikugel for the Noah fight, alongside Raidou. Regardless, fuckin good game, my dude. This was a hell of a time to see!
Interesting that your game froze where it did. I had the regular Dante version of this game, played Hard mode, and the game froze multiple times at that EXACT point! I remember just being super sad after spending all that time, all those blood and tear drops, just to be beat by what I thought was an impossible obstacle. Luckily, I somehow managed to load the game enough times that the game just decided to let me continue.
Hello, yes, I'm the person at Atlus who said "heh, you know what would be funny, is if we made it so that Lucifer heals himself when you're almost done with him so that now the player has to hold out even longer." SMT IV > SMT III
I want to wait till the Challenge is over to say this: my family and I have the version with Dante in it and I know that none beat it because our PS2 broke down. If we end up getting a working PS2, I might attempt to beat this game. I could go for that Jack Frost with agi skills like I did last time playing it.

Since you started this series, I started and finished Nocturne (maniax version). Ran into the same bug from the beginning of the video too, and fixed it in the same way!

@@aegisScale nah, if lv max you do tons of dmg, after watching randomizer runs done by ChanpionmBeef, some times demons would have underflows to lv max, there was a pisaca that 2-shot lucifer with 35k dmg
The reason is Raido and Dante are literally the same character. They basically reskinned Dante in the re-re-release.
The values in the game are probably the same as well, so the save would should work fine

@@Coramelimane Son't Oath and Raidou the Eternal were pretty much almost the same back then, only that Raidou the Eternal (translated as The Aeon) also had a Pierce effect added to it on top of the phys boost

I don't consider the fact that kagutsuchi does 1.6k damage without buffs and he can't do anything to stop it a failure. All the suffering he went through is commendable and really impressive. He still beat Kagutsuchi and Lucifer without any buffs

I think the reason why Luicifer casts Diarahan is because his max HP may have been up to the integer limit, so Atlus had a workaround.

I’ve been using this series as a true demon ending pseudo walkthrough for smt3 remaster, and the Noah boss fight had me stuck for almost an hour. I was about ready to start over, but when you said tekisatsu with raidou, that gave me the damage push I needed to kill him. I never thought it would work because I thought it was physical, and he always reflects that. But seriously, thank you.
Another fun Lucifer buff is that Root of Evil adds in Dekaja in the Chronicles version.
You are definetly my favorite SMT games channel, playing stuffs like this can be reasonable make me think that you are the best!

Sounds similar to a boss that has 13 phases with 2500 hp each, and a 14th phase with 6000 hp in which it resists everything, and can make a party member heal the boss.

Honestly, it makes sense in a strange way that the game still works. They really are nearly identical and in an emulator, there's no weird region-locking so with the only difference in the code being a model and some text (along with a flag to make the skill have Pierce), it's the same game.

For far it's not too painful, then again I'm not anywhere near the end of the game. If anything my only complaint is the more limited access to racial abilities.

Sucks that kagutsuchi was such a huge challenge that you had to break the rules, but it's still pretty amazing that you could even get that far
I remember in about August of 2019 which was when I had started my first actual playthrough of Persona 5/P5 (first ATLUS game ever to my memory, and I got the game in January, tried it but got bored at first) and eventually completed it fully 3 times a month later, after forcing myself to. I enjoyed it so much I decided to get the platinum trophy/achievement for the game as it was one of my first ever RPGs, let alone JRPGs, as well as it being one of my most favourite games. Also, it’s one of my most favourite turn-based games but is most certainly not one of my first ever played. I have been quite the fanatic of P5 but not to the point of where, like certain people, the game is life and almost essentially having to sacrifice my soul to it. Luckily I hadn’t fallen in that trap... I guess?
At some point after watching A LOT of P5 videos on UA-cam, I decided to watch some of Nyarly’s (your) videos about the history of the Shin Megami Tensei/SMT games and videos relating to P5. Eventually (I overuse that word a lot, I’m sorry) when you uploaded the first part of the ‘SMT: Nocturne No Buff/Debuff’ challenge, I decided (this word too, again, sorry) to “watch the first few minutes of the video” I said to myself ending up being hooked in and watching the entire thing without skipping a single part of the video. I’m glad that I had done so because this has taught me not to grasp on a singular thing all the time as things eventually become old/outdated. When I noticed you uploaded the second part of the challenge, I immediately clicked in excitement but more in pure curiosity both if the challenge was possible and what the original SMT titles were like.
Now I have to admit, P5 was and, from the time I wrote this, still is the only SMT related title I had ever played. Never played P4, P3, P2: Innocent Sin, P2: Eternal Punishment, and Revelations: Persona, as well as SMT1, SMT2, SMTIf..., SMT: Nine, SMT: Nocturne, SMT: Imagine, SMT: Strange Journey, SMT4, and SMT4: Apocalypse (SMT5 when?), and with that being said, I don’t necessarily have a say in comparing any game. The games in general, and of my ‘first glance-like’ interest being P4, P3, and now SMT: Nocturne, would really be fun to play, If... (pun intended) I can ever own them and the platform or console to play them on, and I would possibly enjoy every one bit of them as much as, or even more, who knows, P5.
It surely was great being along this journey as a viewer as it was both entertaining and was quite an ‘on-edge’ journey-like experience (cannot think of a word relating to ‘that’). I wish I could’ve re-lived that experience again, at least one more time, and hopefully you do more challenges in the SMT and/or Persona series (if not, understandable). It was also sad how you got to the second last fight of the entire game where you literally ran straight into a figuratively impassible wall and had to officially stop the entire challenge. You were so close to completing it, hopefully there is a way and if not, then all hope is now lost...
I am also terribly sorry for anyone reading this entire story and a half of a comment which is actually, and quite possibly, my longest comment ever. So...
*TL;DR:*
Persona 5 is the only SMT title I’d ever played, I wish I could play other Persona and SMT titles, I enjoyed a lot of Persona-related videos and videos done by Nyarly (yourself), I enjoyed the experience of the challenge you went through but yet it was sad that Nyarly (you) wasn’t(/weren’t) able to complete it, and lastly, I am not an out-right Persona 5 addict, just so anyone knows.

You deserve a medal mate. Even if you weren't able to beat the last bosses without debuffs, but you are a solider for beating a game like SMT nocturne with a challenge like that. I respect the hell out of you.
now obviously I know this is a challenge series and not meant to cover every aspect of the game, but the way you paraphrase this play through and some of the story bits to string it all together seems like a really interesting way to condense a game for viewers who may not have access to it. significantly shorter than a vod or edited series, and much meatier than a wiki article. including the bits about your experience and strategy is engaging as well. this series does a good job for what it is, it just got my thoughts running on the possible applications for this format.

In my opinion, Nocturne is Megaten at its finest. Great and dreadful designs from Kaneko, brilliant music from Shoji Meguro (Staff Roll is the best in portraying the hopelessness of the game, yet with smooth and warm tones to congratulate you on your journey), interesting story with keeping the basement of the series (choosing what you believe in), yet deviating from it by choosing reasons rather then alignments, awesome implementation of the press-turn system(imo it's better than SMT IV, maybe it's just because i stuck with Nocturne way more than with IV)
All of these make up a great game and the best Megaten out there

Dude this run had me thrilled to see if you can do it. I'm sad that it took the final two bosses on this run to not make this complete, but it seems like in theory no buffs/debuffs run can be done on a different ending or on a lower difficulty. You got a fan with this run.
Fun Fact: Noah has a 90% resistance to Almighty. Also, you can skip Noah and go to the Manikin "town" early; that way you could've had Freikugel for the Noah fight, alongside Raidou.
Regardless, fuckin good game, my dude. This was a hell of a time to see!

Interesting that your game froze where it did. I had the regular Dante version of this game, played Hard mode, and the game froze multiple times at that EXACT point! I remember just being super sad after spending all that time, all those blood and tear drops, just to be beat by what I thought was an impossible obstacle.
Luckily, I somehow managed to load the game enough times that the game just decided to let me continue.

I want to wait till the Challenge is over to say this: my family and I have the version with Dante in it and I know that none beat it because our PS2 broke down. If we end up getting a working PS2, I might attempt to beat this game. I could go for that Jack Frost with agi skills like I did last time playing it.

In the normal demon Ending you dont have to fight kagatushi so it is possible to beat this game on hard with no buff and debuff
