Thanks, Rusty. Awesome talk. I would offer my slight disagreement on one point: I used to be quite reserved in both my singing and playing at church, being very careful to avoid the "showing off" spectacle. One day our minister pulled me aside and explained to me that it's my obligation to share the fullness of the gift that God blessed me with. That I should never hold back. It's not about what I'm capable of, but rather the capability that God has provided me. What's important is the heart - where the music is coming from. Let them see God's light thru me. Don't hide it. Obviously there's the time/place/appropriateness element, but the message was simple. When the time comes, let it fly. Do not hold back. However, even in light of this, I believe it is critical that whatever you decide to play elevates the message, not the sender.

Thanks for sharing the story! We never want to hold back but just play. What’s appropriate for this song. In any style of music. That’s awesome that you’re using your talents to serve the Lord. I know it’s exciting for me. I appreciate you checking out the video.🙏

I play both ways at church. Some songs need the lighter touch and some need a little OD for the push. Only occasionally do I do any soloing and that's really for a build up in the song. And yes you have to keep the ego in check. A lot of church musicians need to work on dynamics. Nobody needs to play all the time. Sometimes the song just needs space to breath. A place for people to be able to hear others singing, or hear from God. Thanks for your great videos on both sides.

Well put and to say rock style isn't for worship music let alone modern worship is very old minded and close minded. Just listen to most modern contemporary Christian music and u can hear leads in the background so to say doing a lead isn't worship is old school close minded and there's more people in church's than just old people that appreciate the rock stuff. Not using the gift you've been given is like slapping God in the face.

@@willkeasling1526I think Rusty isn’t trying to fully jab leads. It seems to me he is coming from a place where all he played was strong rock that worshiped the self as opposed to what he is doing now. It’s more about the heart as we play and sing. A person can play all the leads they want for God but if it is not giving Him glory then I think that is worse than not using all of your gifts.

    • @davidcook2513
      @davidcook2513 3 дні тому +1

@@willkeasling1526"contemporary Christian music" is not what he is talking about. He's talking about praise and worship music as part of the bigger setting of a worship service. Big difference. A concert by a contemporary Christian music group or artist would be an excellent place for lead solos. Praise and worship, however, is not a concert.

    • @willkeasling1526
      @willkeasling1526 2 дні тому

@@raymondbradley3559 so there's no reason to use the gift to the fullest that he's given which is comparable to burying a talent in the ground then quinching the spirit. Contemporary songs used in a worship set is yes praise and worship and lead r just a filler or add to the music just like bass and drums adds to. Southern gospel has leads and so does gospel just cause they don't stand out. I'm not gonna limit the gift he gave me just cause of close minded people with a religious spirit that needs to be repented of sorry.

My first guitar teacher played in the church band. What's funny is he loved metal and hard rock. One Sunday morning he turned the gain up in his amp. You would have thought he came up and gave the congregation the middle finger. The worship leader was not happy. I thought it was awesome and sounded great. He wasn't louder than normal but his tone sounded big.

Great video Rusty and now a subscriber. 64 year old rocker here, heavily influenced by Pink Floyd. About 6 Years ago I put my trust in Jesus. I have been playing worship for almost 4 years and I love playing guitar more than I ever did playing original secular music. There was definitely a learning curve to find that balance between worship and my style. I am blessed to have a worship director that gives me that creative freedom. The David Gilmour influence comes through at times and it blends quite well.

As a rock guitarist for decades, the biggest struggle I had was adapting my style to the modern worship style. I found it boring but wanted to serve. At the root of it all I am still a rock guitarist and I play modern worship music to share my gifts so God is glorified but I have to take breaks from it because it’s work to play it. I would equate it to writing with my left hand.

I eventually walked away with the feeling that I had nothing to offer on that environment because my approach was totally wrong.

    Great video.
I'm just learning, and my daughters don't mind that I send them Bach Chorales. One even commented that I could play it in a church choir. I'm not ready for that yet, but it gives me inspiration.
I recently had to undergo a surgical intervention. I've had too many life-changing experiences because of operations, but especially recovery rooms and the ICU.
I talked with the surgeon, and they were all to aware of the problem.
In the recovery room this time, there were few people (I can't remember clearly) but there were only two machines running. They must have been a perfect fifth or fourth apart, since they were soothing. The nurse appeared as if an angel to tell me that I was in the recovery room, and I think I told her I was listening to a song, and that I had no pain. I wrote to my surgeon and explained the times I woke up with machines making dissonant sounds. He thinks this is very important and will talk with his colleagues. He even talked about how this would also have an effect for the medical staff!
Why don't you spontaneously call your local hospital and discuss this with the surgeons and anaesthisists. I'm sure they would be very interested. They might put you in contact with medical equipment makers. Imagine making music to heal people?

I never developed at rock; I developed some in fusion jazz some. Improvising played an important part. I found paranoia is the secular music world. It seemed more like a competition; that I am bound to lose. Fear of losing...
Jesus has rescued me musically. One of my prayers before we start is that the Holy Spirit fills us with the music and we play it for Him. God gives it to us and we give it back the very best we can.
I do enjoy approaching some of your techniques. All in all I don't have to fear it. My music has a purpose. I have needed a purpose for my music and playing all along. Now I understand why Bach only had one major gig outside the church; it wasn't too long before he returned to the church.

If you're looking for a traditional pedal on a budget, I suggest the Mooer D7 X2, very reasonably priced, not really a sacrifice in sound quality just does not have some of the features of the more expensive petals out there. If you really wanted good combo, they also make a very good ambient reverb pedal. This is coming from someone that isn't into overuse of delay and reverb. However, if you're going to use it, you should use something that doesn't sacrifice the guitar's tone. There was a lot of effort put into this video, I appreciate the effort Rusty made.

For me, the "big adjustment" was playing rock guitar.
I worked my way through college from '83 to '87 as lead electric guitar player and vocalist in a Top 40 / Country cover band. My boss insisted that I play other people's parts note for note and mimic other vocalists when I sang. I played music I didn't like on an instrument I had no independent desire to own or play (Stratocaster) to an audience filled with intoxicated divorcees. It was a job.
    Bluegrass was my "jam."
I got started as a music maker as a 12 year old kid in 1977 on one of the first banjos that Greg Deering built for commercial sale. I had lessons from an "L.A. session scene cat" for three years. I got my first guitar, an Ovation Balladeer, on Christmas Day, 1980, and immediately proceeded to make music on the thing by simply co-opting banjo techniques.
One of those is formulating leads, riffs, and runs from triads. The other is picking the strings with my thumb, index, and middle fingers.
So, playing like that is second-nature to me and has long been my preferred approach when I'm free to play a song how I want to play it.

Just stumbled onto this video clip & was very impressed with the subject matter & the ideas given to make the transition from a Blues/Rocker to a church musician. Having been playing rock/blues back in the 70's also I can relate to the transition. My solution to being more supportive to the worship vocal's is to play on an acoustic guitar & let my buddy handle the subtle lead parts. But seriously, I also found playing triads beneficial. Also most church music is in major key's so that keeps you of the minor pentatonic blues scales. Great article.

The “modern worship style “ ; at least in my area ; is to play just one note continuously throughout the song ! Anything else is considered to be showing off ! I decided to just back out .

    • @donqualls5902
      @donqualls5902 6 днів тому +1

@Stupidjerk1184 CCM is much more than one repeating note...and while that is some of what we do..., we also play triads, 1-note lines, 2 note lines for harmony. Also, use a slide for lead parts. It may not seem easy to play, but the more you play the more you'll get used to it. Begin to use inverted chords and shell voicing.

Great insight brother. I also was a secular rock guitarist from that time and gave my life over to the Lord. I have been playing Christian music since the late 70's. I currently play guitar in a praise/worship band and know what you mean about the sound and scales being used. I also use a light overdrive setting with digital delay and chorus/reverb for that ambient sound. I enjoyed this lesson. Thanks.

I like the deep reverbs on modern worship (I use the Neunaber Seraphim) but often I revert to a simple classic spring reverb on traditional hymns or Maranatha type songs. We try to draw from a wide variety of musical with a diverse congregation. I also find added nines very useful and I vary chord inversions with the same song especially b when I go to the chorus or a bridge. I punch old school power chords with subtle overdrive and light compression for dynamics. I never play solos but will sometimes double under a vocal hook with an octave pedal. Thanks for this useful channel. I’m old, too 😅 and I pastor the church.

Hi Rusty! God Bless!! Yes! I also am a guitar player from the 70's into the 80's. This is the video to watch if you're coming from a Rock/Blues background! I've played over 20 years in bands Live gigs, recordings, tours, etc. and playing a certain style. Now going to a Church, Worship team setting is quite different to say the least! I have to really alter my style of playing! It's a totally different way of playing! I'm still learning how to play this way, not only style, but also what effects to use. But I like this style of playing over the old Rock days! I like using triads, scales in this style of playing and I agree we have to serve the song. Currently I'm using a Helix to get these sounds. I was just a pedal guy, "back in the day." Overdrive, Wah, Flanger was my weapons of choice back then. Thanks for this video Rusty!

I play electric in a praise and worship band and have off and in rock bar bands for many years. While I agree you've got to shift over to the major pentatonic for the most part in church there are plenty of songs in minor keys or minor key segments that you can basically play blues rock over. My approach is to get most pure vintage overdriven tone I can with as little modern cheese effects as possible. Using the guitar volume and tone controls to round out. To me some of the greatest moments are playing very laid back but very brutal vintage overdrive, meaningful bends, appropriate vibrato, etc. Nice video!

Couldn't agree with you more. I have a very similar approach. It's not that I never use ambient effects, but I know they are overused. If you're playing with many other instruments, the type of bluesy organic sound is much better in the mix without getting muddy, if done tastefully. When you have keyboards and pads already doing the ambient thing, one or two electric guitars that are also wet with ambient effects, just drown in a sea of irrelevance.

    • @71rcode72
      @71rcode72 6 днів тому +2

Great point. I agree! Effects color changes get lost amongst other instruments. Clean overdriven vintage tube amps tone tamed with the guitar volume knob is my trick. I also play through a tube amps next to me as well as through the system

I'm both - I started in rock and made the transition too - but for me the rig difference is the biggest difference tone-wise.
I like that you mentioned the intent. An audience of one.
But I think an aggressive tone isn’t a big deal at church - rocking out for God for the right reasons isn’t a bad thing.
Plus i made the mistake of trying tk sound like every other church guitarist (like The Edge), but after about a decade i let my true heart out -
My style, tone, intensity + God motivated = amazing worship.

@@RustysWorshipGuitar2 I always think of the Babylon Bee satire piece "Church Bassist bursts into flames warming up with Black Sabbath song" 🤣 I appreciate what your saying, it's not about us, I had a great worship leader that said : " If we do our job right, people don't see us, they see God." I left a "megachurch" after 10 years for a few reasons. One was that playing in front of several thousand was a struggle with my ego - keeping it in check, the other was that the church became so heavily focused on production and "stage toys" like lights and fog, cameras, etc, to the point that it began to feel like Jesus had "left the building". God is everywhere, but I think you get the point. There was no longer room for spontaneous worship, when it's obvious the congregation is really into it and you should keep it going, because, well, you need to leave the stage at 9:17 so the person who does the connection cards comes out. The staff went to conferences and began to adopt "best practices" like we were in corporate America and trying to optimize profitability. They became what I refer to as a McChurch franchise - a whole movement where you can step from one into another and notice little if no change. and it shouldn't be about "best practices", it should be about God, and Worship of God is one of our highest forms of Praise and connection.
I started working on my own music with my home recording studio and bringing my Martin to a small church where my friend is pastor, who desperately needed a Worship Leader, Instead of playing Nigel Hendroff lines, I was trying to be the Hands and Feet of God and help organize (herd cats) a small church's praise team with older (mid-2000s) P&W songs, with me singing and strumming. It's been rewarding to watch their team grow and become cohesive.

Rusty, well said, and nicely presented. I agree about the approach to the instrument and the motivation. I don't think there's a problem with trying to 'play well', as long as it's not upstaging the song or the vocalists. I find that the guitar lines as recorded in many worship songs tend to be extremely simple, repetitive, and often not very melodious. I think we can do better.

Interesting this popped into my feed. I think the biggest difference is simply wanting to glorify God vs glorify yourself. Rock licks aren't bad and neither is rock tone. It is all about who we are worshipping and serving the song and teammates. As a side note; most contemporary worship music is simply pop music so rock stuff clashes really hard, in my opinion. The song writing is just so different.

Thanks for checking out the video.🙏

Guilty as charged. Old me was the minor pentatonic/heavy chuggin chords and chasing the "rock legends". Christ is now preeminent and worshipping him lowers all of us in our praise team to humble servants. I see the difficulty in the transitioning of many guitarist from club scenes to house of worship. If you crush a monster lick and the congregation is looking at you that may have been a major fail. My difficulties of transitioning were twofold. One. Getting over me. Two. understanding what glorifies Christ. If transitioning to Major scales and arpeggiated chords with less drive and more ambient tones satisfies the Lord then I am all in. And being part of a team that, together glorifies the Lord is an incredible opportunity. Although not a Methodist I can share a cool statement from John Wesley...."Sing lustily and with good courage."

Right on Robert! If our heart is right, we will play what’s appropriate for the song. No matter secular or worship. I’m getting quite a few negative comments about that. I’m sure it’s from people who don’t play in church though. Thank you again for the comment and let’s talk soon.👍

Guitarists simply can't put the ego and spotlight away. The stage never seems to end..

WHOA! WHOA! WHOA WITH THAT LES PAUL!!!
Is that even ALLOWED in CHURCH???
    😂
Two of my main influences were Eddie Van Halen and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Neither are exactly right for church. Triads and the major scale are pretty much the church wheelhouse.
    Good video, brother. 👍🏼

    This resonates well with me.
As I have been hosting jam sessions with various Church musicians of various skill levels I have been praying about how I can better direct and guide the direction purposeful playing.
With that in mind two words come to mind
"Cacophony" where playing and singing is to be heard.
    Second
    "Articulation"
Where play and singing is subject to the meaning of the song.
This would include both words and musical expression.
You mentioned some of these elements as related to the guitar.
I have some thoughts on this, but it seems like a very important issue that is not always covered.
    Any other thoughts?

Hey Robert, it’s really all about the heart of why we play or sing. We all need to work at being conscious of the message and the mood of the song! Thanks so much for checking out the video🙏

      Thanks for the reply.
After re-reading what I wrote seems like that articulation is something I need to apply to writing as well.
Sorry for being clumsy with my words.
What you are doing is a real blessing.
      Thanks.

Sadly the drums and they are covered but not enough and hearing the guitar or bass is impossible unless the church gets electronic drums .
I can't hear in the church I go and I'm trying to hear them.
I get what you say about rock guitarist but I don't think all of them show off.
