      Awesome, in the churches to worship our Lord!
      Our mission is to start playing Gospel- Rock music where christian bands usually never reach out to:
      Together with our bros of the Ambassadors of Christ motorcycle ministries we bring light and God's love to people who'd never go to church (before they get to know Jesus).
      So we rock for the Rock that never rolls: Jesus!!! by God's grace.
      And yes,it's just divine Rock'n Roll.
      Hallelujah, stay faaatly blessed brother and keep doing the good work God put you in!

      This is in my opinion a very strange way of apraoching the way we play the guitar in church. I believe that there is no special way needed to play in church. I believe God gave us all talents honour Him in any way we can. Everyone of us has got different types of talents although they can look alike.
      In this light I think that every musician should surch for his of her own given way of playing or singing so that the fullness of God can be seen. This means that any type of style could fit in church, if it harmonies with the rest of the band and the rest of the church members.

    I play both ways at church. Some songs need the lighter touch and some need a little OD for the push. Only occasionally do I do any soloing and that's really for a build up in the song. And yes you have to keep the ego in check. A lot of church musicians need to work on dynamics. Nobody needs to play all the time. Sometimes the song just needs space to breath. A place for people to be able to hear others singing, or hear from God. Thanks for your great videos on both sides.

      Well put and to say rock style isn't for worship music let alone modern worship is very old minded and close minded. Just listen to most modern contemporary Christian music and u can hear leads in the background so to say doing a lead isn't worship is old school close minded and there's more people in church's than just old people that appreciate the rock stuff. Not using the gift you've been given is like slapping God in the face.

      @@willkeasling1526I think Rusty isn’t trying to fully jab leads. It seems to me he is coming from a place where all he played was strong rock that worshiped the self as opposed to what he is doing now. It’s more about the heart as we play and sing. A person can play all the leads they want for God but if it is not giving Him glory then I think that is worse than not using all of your gifts.

      @@willkeasling1526"contemporary Christian music" is not what he is talking about. He's talking about praise and worship music as part of the bigger setting of a worship service. @@ChickenThug55 Absolutely... it depends where their heart is with the Lord. I think saying a guitarist is showing off in church because he plays skillfully is judgmental. Because the same thing could be said about the lead worship vocalist or any other musician on the worship team for all that matters. If the Lord has blessed you with a musical talent and your using it only to praise the Lord... well then do it. And do it as best as you can for Him! That guitar player may be in the Spirit with the Lord. Sometimes we need to lighten up! Psalms 33:3 In-Context
      1 Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him. 2 Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. 3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.

      LOL.... This is such a silly comment.
      EVERYTIME A GUITARIST PLAYS, he shows off his skills.
      this guy in this video is showing off his skills.................your point is what ?
      A guitar is an extension of your emotions, there is no such thing as showing off with guitar
      there is only... Can you play or can't you
      so if you're trying to play beyond your capability.. that's different.
      but if you're good , let's say James Hetfield came into church and played something like Orion
      if the church disagree, the church would be wrong

    • @Caperetiree
      @Caperetiree 8 місяців тому

      When the lad guitarist is constantly playing over the lead worship singer and over all of the other musicians, it becomes a performance - not worship. Accompanying music should be balanced. One any musician attempts to become the focus of attention whether it be the lead guitarist, drummer, etc. The overall “feeling” of worship can be lost. This is especially true when then the worship director asks musicians to cover the song and the musicians decide they are going to do it their way in spite of the direction given to them. Finally, why in the world would you even say that my comment is silly? This is why I hesitate making comments other than affirming what the UA-camr is saying.

    Great video Rusty and now a subscriber. 64 year old rocker here, heavily influenced by Pink Floyd. About 6 Years ago I put my trust in Jesus. I have been playing worship for almost 4 years and I love playing guitar more than I ever did playing original secular music. So very true, been leading worship now for almost 14 years mostly playing and singing by myself. I play an acoustic, mainly a Taylor, and subtle effects and pads help immensely. Before I came to know Christ in my 40s, I played and sang all kinds of popular rock and pop tunes. Playing at church is really about producing a quality of sound that helps people to focus on the words and who they are singing to. I think it's important to present a posture of worship in our singing and playing with humility and excellence. Love your video, man, and I wish I had someone like you to play worship with!

      If you're looking for a traditional pedal on a budget, I suggest the Mooer D7 X2, very reasonably priced, not really a sacrifice in sound quality just does not have some of the features of the more expensive petals out there. If you really wanted good combo, they also make a very good ambient reverb pedal. This is coming from someone that isn't into overuse of delay and reverb. However, if you're going to use it, you should use something that doesn't sacrifice the guitar's tone. There was a lot of effort put into this video, I appreciate the effort Rusty made.

    I play for my church and in my free time play rock, blues, jazz, and some country. I agree with alot of what your saying. When I decided to start playing for my church two years ago I took a couple months prior to research Worship music and techniques lead players used. That was a big help transitioning from my more normal playing comfort zones. Now two years later more and more there are occasions that because of some of my knowledge of the guitar neck and trust that I try to make the Worship experience better they do have me take solos BUT when soloing I think its important to be aware of the chords your playing over and incorporate vocal melody into or between licks. If your leads are following chord changes it will sound more musical, you can improv, and not not be distracting. Also I had to learn to play less notes and let the delays play some of them for me. I agree you don’t want to be a distraction so it’s important that if you want to express yourself at church using your God given gift that you take the extra practice to be prepared to have control of your notes. Don’t just run scales. highlight the chords and vocals in your own way. Your instrument can add a lot of color and emotion to a song.

    Great video.
    I'm just learning, and my daughters don't mind that I send them Bach Chorales. One even commented that I could play it in a church choir. I'm not ready for that yet, but it gives me inspiration.
    I recently had to undergo a surgical intervention. I've had too many life-changing experiences because of operations, but especially recovery rooms and the ICU.
    I talked with the surgeon, and they were all to aware of the problem.
    In the recovery room this time, there were few people (I can't remember clearly) but there were only two machines running. They must have been a perfect fifth or fourth apart, since they were soothing. The nurse appeared as if an angel to tell me that I was in the recovery room, and I think I told her I was listening to a song, and that I had no pain. I wrote to my surgeon and explained the times I woke up with machines making dissonant sounds. He thinks this is very important and will talk with his colleagues. He even talked about how this would also have an effect for the medical staff!
    Why don't you spontaneously call your local hospital and discuss this with the surgeons and anaesthisists. I'm sure they would be very interested. They might put you in contact with medical equipment makers. Imagine making music to heal people?

    I like the deep reverbs on modern worship (I use the Neunaber Seraphim) but often I revert to a simple classic spring reverb on traditional hymns or Maranatha type songs. We try to draw from a wide variety of musical with a diverse congregation. I also find added nines very useful and I vary chord inversions with the same song especially b when I go to the chorus or a bridge. I punch old school power chords with subtle overdrive and light compression for dynamics. I never play solos but will sometimes double under a vocal hook with an octave pedal. Thanks for this useful channel. I’m old, too 😅 and I pastor the church.

    Just stumbled onto this video clip & was very impressed with the subject matter & the ideas given to make the transition from a Blues/Rocker to a church musician. Having been playing rock/blues back in the 70's also I can relate to the transition. My solution to being more supportive to the worship vocal's is to play on an acoustic guitar & let my buddy handle the subtle lead parts. But seriously, I also found playing triads beneficial. Also most church music is in major key's so that keeps you of the minor pentatonic blues scales. Great article.

    As a rock guitarist for decades, the biggest struggle I had was adapting my style to the modern worship style. I found it boring but wanted to serve. At the root of it all I am still a rock guitarist and I play modern worship music to share my gifts so God is glorified but I have to take breaks from it because it’s work to play it. I would equate it to writing with my left hand.

      I had the same experience at my church . I tried to just “fill in “ quietly in the background ; but what was wanted was to just play one or two notes throughout a song . I just couldn’t do that . I tried it for years ; I didn’t feel like I was contributing anything .

      The “modern worship style “ ; at least in my area ; is to play just one note continuously throughout the song ! Anything else is considered to be showing off ! I decided to just back out .

    • @donqualls5902
      @donqualls5902 8 місяців тому +1

      @Stupidjerk1184 CCM is much more than one repeating note...and while that is some of what we do..., we also play triads, 1-note lines, 2 note lines for harmony. Also, use a slide for lead parts. It may not seem easy to play, but the more you play the more you'll get used to it. Begin to use inverted chords and shell voicing.

    Great insight brother. I also was a secular rock guitarist from that time and gave my life over to the Lord. I have been playing Christian music since the late 70's. I currently play guitar in a praise/worship band and know what you mean about the sound and scales being used. I also use a light overdrive setting with digital delay and chorus/reverb for that ambient sound. I enjoyed this lesson. Thanks.

    Thanks, Rusty. Awesome talk. I would offer my slight disagreement on one point: I used to be quite reserved in both my singing and playing at church, being very careful to avoid the "showing off" spectacle. One day our minister pulled me aside and explained to me that it's my obligation to share the fullness of the gift that God blessed me with. That I should never hold back. It's not about what I'm capable of, but rather the capability that God has provided me. What's important is the heart - where the music is coming from. Let them see God's light thru me. Don't hide it. Obviously there's the time/place/appropriateness element, but the message was simple. When the time comes, let it fly. Do not hold back. However, even in light of this, I believe it is critical that whatever you decide to play elevates the message, not the sender.

    Hi Rusty! God Bless!! Yes! I also am a guitar player from the 70's into the 80's. This is the video to watch if you're coming from a Rock/Blues background! I've played over 20 years in bands Live gigs, recordings, tours, etc. and playing a certain style. Now going to a Church, Worship team setting is quite different to say the least! I have to really alter my style of playing! It's a totally different way of playing! I'm still learning how to play this way, not only style, but also what effects to use. But I like this style of playing over the old Rock days! I like using triads, scales in this style of playing and I agree we have to serve the song. Currently I'm using a Helix to get these sounds. I was just a pedal guy, "back in the day." Overdrive, Wah, Flanger was my weapons of choice back then. Thanks for this video Rusty!

    I play electric in a praise and worship band and have off and in rock bar bands for many years. While I agree you've got to shift over to the major pentatonic for the most part in church there are plenty of songs in minor keys or minor key segments that you can basically play blues rock over. My approach is to get most pure vintage overdriven tone I can with as little modern cheese effects as possible. Using the guitar volume and tone controls to round out. To me some of the greatest moments are playing very laid back but very brutal vintage overdrive, meaningful bends, appropriate vibrato, etc. Nice video!

      Couldn't agree with you more. I have a very similar approach. It's not that I never use ambient effects, but I know they are overused. If you're playing with many other instruments, the type of bluesy organic sound is much better in the mix without getting muddy, if done tastefully. When you have keyboards and pads already doing the ambient thing, one or two electric guitars that are also wet with ambient effects, just drown in a sea of irrelevance.

    • @71rcode72

      Same. I have played semi-professionally and in church for 50 years. It was a long process of learning what Rusty shared here. What really helped me was getting deeply into ambient & shoegaze (esp Slowdive). After a lifetime of rock, blues, fusion, prog it is a joy to now add massive soundscapes underneath the other musicians. Our bassist, who comes from a heavy/hard rock professional background recently was blown away when I added two sparkle verbs to my already massive 'shoegaze' board. One of the nicest compliments I have ever received. He is a perfectionist who has recorded and still plays live regularly. It can be hard to make these changes, but I the congregation seems to really appreciate it.

    Thanks Rusty, well said guitarists should learn how to support the praise and worship songs being sung by the worship leaders. I kinda like the somewhat “middle of the road” sound of Dickie Betts. Frankly, I think the modern church guitar sound relies too heavily on reverb, delay, and chorus effects. I played only at church for years until I decided some younger folks were standing behind me ready for their turn. Rusty, well said, and nicely presented. I agree about the approach to the instrument and the motivation. I don't think there's a problem with trying to 'play well', as long as it's not upstaging the song or the vocalists. I find that the guitar lines as recorded in many worship songs tend to be extremely simple, repetitive, and often not very melodious. I think we can do better.

    So, as an acoustic guitar player, I play chords almost exclusively in the church praise band. I want to switch over to electric with someone else on acoustic. Am I to focus on lead lines mostly? Not sure what to do. What should an electric guitar player be doing with a keyboard and maybe an acoustic guitar in the mix.

    • @TheWorshipGuitarChannel2
      @TheWorshipGuitarChannel2  8 місяців тому +2

      The biggest thing that will take you to the next level playing electric would be learning triad shapes. They will help you connect rhythm and lead lines whenever they are needed and it’s easy to play around the keyboard and acoustic guitar with those triad chord shapes. You create the lead lines using the notes in those triads. Thanks a lot for checking out the video and blessings to you.👍

      You’re right! Every church is different with their musical taste! And there is not a right or wrong way to glorify God with our musical talents! Thanks a lot for leaving a comment. Enjoy your Sunday.🙏

    I play the same way both in and out of churc.
    But in church, I use more atmospheric pedals, such as the strymon cloudburst

      I was only using the Strymon big sky and timeline in this video. The cloud setting on the big sky. I am just starting to create some patches on the H 90. I will share them soon. Thanks a lot for checking out the video Wally.🙏

    Hi Rusty, I only ever played an acoustic in a small church, so I'm not sure how the roles work within a large church. Do you play the melody lines, or is your role more to play notes within the chord, to "fill-in" space in a support role?
    I do understand the point you are making about rock musican vs church musican. Our church had a vocalist who loved the sound of her own voice. She sang through her own amplifier, so I couldn't turn her down or EQ her overpowering treble via the mixing desk. 😱

      I do fill in Melody around the piano sometimes but also just simply connect the cords with Melody also. Whatever is needed for the song. Thanks so much for checking out my videos!🙏

    Hi Rusty
    What is the setting on the strymon?

    • @TheWorshipGuitarChannel2
      @TheWorshipGuitarChannel2  8 місяців тому +2

      I was using the cloud setting. With the mix about 12 o’clock. I also have it in the effects loop. If you use it in front of the amp, you have to bring down the mix. Thanks for checking out the video.🙏

    Exactly. Too many Rock guitarists are about flash and not just showing off their talent, but showing off their ego. Many solos are tremendously overplayed, even in secular music. Praise God if you have the talent to do that, but it doesn't belong in worship music. Thank you for an interesting video.

    Delay is tough for me. How do you adjust on the fly for different tempos? Our worship set is short, four songs, but they may range from 80bpm to 100bpm. Is there a setting where you don’t have your tap each one? Don’t want to sound like the Edge, just like that wetter delay tone. I’m really struggling with getting it right. Thanks!

    • @TheWorshipGuitarChannel2
      @TheWorshipGuitarChannel2  8 місяців тому +1

      I use the Strean timeline delay. It’s expensive. But you can store settings in there and access them. And also it has a tap tempo to get you into the right delay time quickly. I just use two settings basically. One that low in the mix and the other heavy mix and long repeats. And I just toggle between the two of them. Thanks a lot for checking out the video and let’s talk soon.🙏
