    Super helpful. Thanks for making this. Trying to troubleshoot a loose PDK paddle with some play/takeup in it and needed to know how to access the inside of the wheel.

    Thanks for sharing. It help me a lot when removing my 981 steering wheel. Just some information, the workshop manual requires changing the bolt after removing.

  • @jptak1969

    FYI that bolt is NOT a T55 Torx. It might **work** but the correct bit to use to pull the bolt is a size 12 triple-square. I'd hate to risk stripping that bolt out either removing or installing....
    Either way thanks for the video - was helpful in doing the same swap on my 2015 Cayenne last night.

    That is not a T55. It's an M12, also known as a triple square or XZN. The size is 12mm. A T55 torx might work, but will only grab in half of the grooves and it's a bit too small (11,22 mm vs 12 mm).

    • @TheStockpile
      @TheStockpile  6 років тому

      True. It doesn't have enough sides to hit all of the grooves but it fit & worked perfectly.

      @@TheStockpile thanks took about 15 min, I did find using a 3.5mm allen wrench worked much better to pop the airbag out.

    Do you know why the horn might sound constantly after you install the new wheel?

    • @TheStockpile
      @TheStockpile  5 років тому

      I'm not sure. It sounds like it's just not installed correctly- when things (i.e. wires, springs) aren't lined up right you can run into all kinds of problems.

    Thank you for the video. How is the white stitching holding up - is it still white, especially where your fingers typically touch the stitching?
    I recommend using an M12 spline bit if you don't already own a T55. It's the proper fit for a triple square. However, if you already own a T55, don't go buy an M12. Just don't go using a T55 on a triple square where you're going to need a lot of torque. Porsche steering wheel bolt doesn't need a lot of torque to remove/install, so the T55 is obviously fine.

    • @TheStockpile
      @TheStockpile  2 роки тому

      The white stitching *inevitably* gets a little dirty but overall it's still looking good.
      Yes, an M12 spline bit would have been better.

      @@TheStockpile Thank you for the reply. I think I'm gonna stick with black stitching, even though I have the white gauges and the white dummy key setup like yours. Again, thank you for the video. I've removed my steering wheel, installed a loaner, and sent mine off to have a layer of leather added to make it a bit thicker.

    Great video and very nice wheel. So did the dealer say why the airbag light wouldn’t turn off? What was the cost for the reset?

    • @TheStockpile
      @TheStockpile  6 років тому

      It's a pretty common thing. When the airbag or a seatbelt is removed from the car and then the car is started it creates a fault. This fault type of safety fault must be reset by the dealer (manufacturers take airbag and seatbelt safety seriously). The reset was free.

    Did moving the steering wheel a notch (tooth) fixed the alignment issues? I replaced my wheel and aligned to the markings and now its slightly off to the right.

    • @TheStockpile
      @TheStockpile  3 роки тому +1

      Moving it a notch seemed to help, yes.

  • @scatt7366

    Great video! You mentioned you have a lot experience with steering wheels. Have you ever had one that makes creaking noises? Not squeaking but a creaking sound. My 991.2 Carrera T is starting to drive me crazy. Not sure what to do with this. A new steering wheel might be the answer.

    • @TheStockpile
      @TheStockpile  4 роки тому

      I'm not totally sure I know the different between squeaking and creaking- is the car still under warranty? You could have someone take a look it. If it's the actual steering wheel making a noise when you hold it (and not the act of turning it) then a new steering wheel would probably solve the issue.

    • @scatt7366
      @scatt7366 4 роки тому

      I've determined the three inserts in the wheel are the culprit. When stopped if I squeeze the wheel I can make the sounds go away. I have loosened and tightened the allen bolts to try and find the right balance but with little success. The car is still under warranty. Hopefully service will be able to replicate the issue. There's nothing worse than hearing that the technician couldn't find a problem. :(

      It's all relative, right? But I'll say this- I wouldn't do that much CF on a wheel again. It gets *really* cold in the winter. I'm sticking with leather & alcantara.

    • @TheStockpile

      As far as I know there's no way to do that *from* the sport wheel, but you can access menus from a control stalk on the right side of the steering column (replacing the wheel does not affect that).
