Nice job buddy! Don’t rush….we’ve all been there 😂 Appreciate your honesty and humility Always satisfying seeing your completed projects! Keep them coming 👍👍
Uh oh…… Edit: It actually worked this time. Good deal. I’m actually not a fan of that wheel. I know everybody loves it, it’s a popular swap but not me. I’d rather have the newer style Macan/GT3 wheel. One day! Anyway, congrats on the successful install.
i did this....for 997.2 when from stock wheel to Tequipment paddle shifter wheel ...but still needed Porsche service to access the computer so that the functions on the Porsche Tequipment wheel worked.
I have a 2010 Cayman S 6 speed and had the same stock steering wheel (- the flippers) in sand beige with matte silver and went to the Sport steering wheel. I had the same error with reinstalling the air bag and having the train horn go off too 😂. I had to get out the Xacto knife to poke the hymen, so as to be able to insert a tool to release the bail on the airbag. The 2nd time was a charm and lesson learned on the wire routing.
Had this done on my 991.1. Much nicer wheel, paddles are sooo much better. They also added the little multi function stick which I was familiar with from older Porsches and way better to use on the move.
Im just getying a panamera with this steering wheel from factory i guess. The extra multifunction stalker also controls volume and media? Like skip songs/ stations etc? Thanks
Replaced the toggle shifter wheel in my 991 PDK with the proper paddle shift, heated, wheel from the 992. Love it and it maintains all the wheel functions as well as looking even better with the interior. Plug and Play.
Thank you for the tip on the wires! I'm doing this exact uograde in my 2009 911 Turbo with TipTronic weekend after next. I'll come back and let you know how it goes.
Finally got this done. What a nice upgrade in my 997TT! I love the Sport Design wheel, it feels so much better and the paddles make the tiptronic feel way more fun!
Great video!! Love it, I’ll do the exchange soon on my 997.2. One thing I am not too sure about, what happened to the horn on the first attempt ? Was there something wrong with its connection ? Thanks mate!
Another great vid. I’ve just got a 997.2 C2S PDK. It has the (boomerang) wheel which I don’t mind the slightly retro styling. I think it looks better in silver than black and mine has also been wrapped in alcantara. I do hate the shift buttons though and found myself changing down on the right and the revs going mad. It’s easier if you concentrate on 1 hand only I suppose. I’ve actually started using the stick to change up and down and have got used to the backwards nature of that! Shifts in sport plus with the stick are lightning fast. I actually think I will miss the multifunction buttons as my Bmw has them which I’m used to. My wheel also has the heating which I have not used yet due to weather and time with the vehicle. I am looking forward to it though. I imagine the sports wheel paddles are miles better as my BMW has these style shifters. I’m not sure if I should go for it to lose so much else. Maybe a newer macan wheel? What you think James?
Funny. ..if I had to say I would have said the replacement was standard from the factory & what you already had was the upgrade. The replacement is my exact wheel...no frills... just the paddles ...& I do like it best this way... keeping it simple. Had no idea there was an "upgraded" wheel which I guess the original owner selected back in 2011 > I'm the 2nd Owner... bought in early 2017 with 67K on the odometer > albeit mine is a S so perhaps that wheel is standard on the S line.
While considering a 991, I’ve noticed that the ones without the paddles are a lot cheaper. Swapping the steering wheel would be the way to go there it seems.
Good project, James. I swapped out my 997 wheel for a Momo a few years ago and have been wondering if, when the time comes that I want to put the stock wheel back in the car, will I remember how to do it? After seeing you do this swap, I remember now how things go together. No plans to go back yet, however! Thanks, man!
Just wondering how to control the screen to cycle to things like tire pressures/oil level now with no stalk or multi-function? Wouldn't a Macan wheel be a better option? Not a criticism, legit curious. Enjoy your videos quite a bit.
Great observation!! Right now I can't use the screen in the cluster to cycle through any of the menu options. For $150 I found the replacement clock spring assembly with the multi-function stalk / stick. It's on its way and I'll install that shortly. Thanks for the kind words!!
@autoamateur I would love to know how that multi function stalk / stick works, I just bought a cayenne without the multi function scroller so I cannot use the cluster to cycle through any other menu options. Thanks man!
I'm just the opposite. My 958.1 GTS came with the sport steering wheel and I want to swap it out to a multi-function mainly because I want it heated. I believe you lose heated steering when having the sport steering wheel or at least I don't have the heated option.
James...thx for the vids...have been watching ur vids for quiet some time but never commented on any...keep making them. My question on this vid is...Did u need to change the Steering Electronic Module? Also, I'm in the market for a 991, and am wondering if I find the same situation as this vid...will it also be a straight swop or will I need to get and change the Steering Electronic Module for the PDK? Thx James da AirBag Murderer!!!😂😂😂😂
Great questions! For any of the 991 generations and wheels, you don’t need to swap the modules. The only thing you might need to do is add the instrument cluster control stalk (which means replacing the clock spring and all of the stalks) if you did what I did which is to lose the MF controls from the original wheel. My new wheel doesn’t have any MF controls, so I needed the extra stalk to control the screen menus in the instrument cluster. If you’re putting a 991.2 wheel with the newer airbags into a 997.2 or earlier, you DO need to also change the steering wheel module if you want multifunction capabilities. But for basic airbag and horn functions you don’t. Hope this helps!!
I have a 2014 991 with the Boomerang styling. Where did you get your steering wheel from? Are there any model numbers we have to be careful to get when purchasing the PDK version you installed?
Sure! You need a Triple Square Spline Bit Socket Set: www.amazon.com/LEXIVON-Triple-Premium-10-Piece-European/dp/B07M6884DY/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?crid=R9AU3OG780ES&keywords=12+point+mm+triple+square+spline+bit+socket+set&qid=1689007983&sprefix=12+point+mm+%2Caps%2C124&sr=8-3-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1

did you have to program anything to get the stalk to work? I'm lookikng at doing the same and see MF stalk on ebay but don't know whats involved in adding the MF stalk to the car.@@AutoAmateur
Just bought the extra stalk from someone on rennlist and I'm hoping that I can just add the stalk without having to replace the entire stalk switch assembly. Also curious if you just ad the stalk switch (arm) to your existing switch assembly given you the 4th stalk or did you have to change the 3 stalk switch assembly with whole new 4 stalk assembly
It’s most likely the wiring harness within your steering wheel. You may have to order the wiring harness intended for the sport design steering wheel or it could just be a programming task. You could check with your Porsche service center about the programming first.
Your airbag might not be seated correctly inside the steering wheel. When you give it a little push, does it have any spring to bounce back a little? If not, one of the wires could be stuck.

I'm going to have to add the multi-function stick. It's a little odd not being able to use the screen.
