Financial adviser here, cars are very very rarely an investment, yes, classics can go up in value, but after storage, repair, maintenance, restoration, parts, insurance, tax etc etc you rarely break even let alone make more money than if you’d just put the money in the markets over that time. Obviously this can happen but it’s rare, so don’t go into it to make money, go into it to buy a car you love and gives you enjoyment! Financial adviser with classic cars.

I’ve had 3 go up but I bought very well. A 1977 targa I bought in 1998 for £5600 is now worth £40000. A boxster 987.2 I purchased in 2022 for £7500 is £12000. My gemballa 700 cayenne I bought without paperwork but got it verified after I paid £37,000 in 2019 ; it’s now valued at £50,000 by Sothebys(although these don’t sell!).

I once owned a Peugeot 406 coupe 2.2hdi, in hyperion blue. What is great about this car is that, underneath the sleek bodywork, it's just a bog-standard 406 saloon, with a few tweaks here, and there - multi-link rear suspension, is the most obvious one! Thus, as you mentioned, the running and servicing costs are modest, compared to bespoke sports/sporting cars. And, it came with a cassette deck and 6-disc multi-changer - important, in their day!

Great to see the 406 coupe mentioned. I have 7 of these v6 manuals in my collection and they are brilliant cars. I have sold two of these previously for £5000 plus so prices are definitely on the rise. Great looking, great to drive, great performance and bullet proof reliability. They also hold their own when parked next to my Ferraris. Great videos too keep up the good work. 👍

The 406 Coupé is a real beauty and definitely a future classic. I'd go for the first generation TT roadster instead of the 80 Cabriolet, they are more iconic and might rise in value quicker. The E-Class convertible is already no longer a cheap modern classic. I wish I could buy a 944 that cheap here in Germany, that would be my first choice.

For the 406 Coupe, there's also a 2.2 Petrol. The line up was 2.0 Petrol, 2.2 Petrol, 2.2 HDI and 3.0L V6 Petrol (in 2 separate guises, the later model was handed to Porsche to 'tweak' resulting in an increase from 194bhp > 210bhp). I have a big soft spot for the 406 Coupe. The thing about the Celica is that it was launched in 1999, which is amazing given how sharp it still looks. The engine is apparently built by Yamaha, so it's actually a four-wheel motorcycle, and it apparently loves to rev.
The 944 has come down a lot, they were north of £5k for a project and at least £10+k for a nice one not too long ago

Nice bit of fun, some long forgotten models, loved the Saab, very distinctive design for both the 900 and 93. As the old saying goes, its fine buying the car, you have to run it and there is the problem with a lot of the choices. Top end stuff will need specialist or dealer maintenance and paperwork to keep it's provenance and to protect the future selling price. Then there's the UK road tax system.......

The Audi 80! Story time, gather round. My grandparents had an Audi 80 convertible in that British racing green colour, LXI 8080 was the reg, they had it for a while and then drove it all the way down to their little holiday home in Cyprus. They kept it for a few years and sold it to a restaurant owner down the street for £2000. This was in the 90s/early 00s before I was born, and yet that same restaurant owner still talks about that car to this day.

The P38’s are absolutely 100% a good buy. The were not all that well received originally and when the L322 was launched, given the title of the worst Range Rover ever. While some of that may be true, the few that are left are worth buying and saving.

Hi Matt My Classic choice is Jaguar S type 2006 Diesel automatic I have owned it for 18months with no issues.I took your advice and have done a gearbox service rear axle service and a timing belt. i have had no faults and it runs like clockwork it has just turned 70,000 miles. It has full service history and it cost me £4000. An absolute bargain Insurance is cheap £336.00 I tax the car for 6 months a year at a cost of £228.25. I get between 30 and 40 mpg dependent on the journey. A fabulous car the best Jaguar I have owned, I have owned an early E type flat floor a 3.8MK 2, Several XJ6 and Daimler 2.5 saloons. Best wishes Alan

An interesting selection of cars. I don't really trust cars much older than 10 years old, they rapidly accumulate problems because modern cars just aren't built to last, the only possible exception to that would be the Mercedes-Benz E-Class which really was built to last, until the accountants nearly destroyed the brand.
I like the Saab 9-3, but I worry about the availability of Saab parts nowadays, but the Saab I really like is their last production model, the 9-5.

An interesting list. I like the Z4 idea : the 3.0 is a great engine, but the coupe is even more special and rare, but pricier. The Cougar definitely deserves respect : it's genuinely so much car for the money, and a 25 year Ford that mostly hasn't disintegrated. I saved one 3 years ago and it wasn't a difficult car to rejuvenate after 8 years laid up. However, the model was never a big deal at the time, so I doubt many will lust after them now.

Another interesting video & I endorse the financial adviser on cars in general not being true investments. This is not the reason I wished to comment however. As a buyer for Land Rover Parts for 10 years spent between Unipart & Land Rover under Ford I witnessed the demand figures for the P38A spares. The feedback from dealers was frightening and what kept customers coming back was they simply loved the product. One lady I remember being told had been back to the dealer 21 times in the first year of ownership! I visited many suppliers. Two key points from those supplier interactions. The rear hatch leaks and getting supplies was a horror story since many failed in Solihull's final inspection wet test. Second and much more serious and also a consideration if damp gets in is the control module that is situated under the driver's seat. Parts are limited ( the chip within it ) and if a substitute is chosen (2nd hand ) it has to be coded to the vehicle. One reason I run a 1974 Classic two door. Plus it doesn't tell me stuff like 'put your seat belt on' which incidentally I do!!

Consider the MGF/MGTF. They can be had for nothing, parts are plentiful since they sold tons of them and they are the last of the line of MG roadsters. Only thing you have to watch out for is rust and head gasket issues and I'd go for the TF if you can since it looks sharper and you don't have to worry about the hydragas suspension.

Auto Trader & The TV series Wheelers Dealers Mike Brewster,
endorses the early Audi Quattro TT MK1's 225bhp Bam (or 3.2 V6.)
They are sure to become a popular classic as they are such a
well made, all around great to drive & reliable car.
Despite being a victim of their own success due to market saturation, there
won't be many about in a few years time after the remainder get street raced
& thrashed to death on track days!
Since there are still so many decent examples around, prices for a pretty decent
    example start at about £1500.
So I bought the BAM one recently for £900, FSH tidy no major faults apart from a
    cracked spring.
I simply spent £300 on springs & 2 new tyres to pass the Mot with no advisories!
How can they depreciate less than £1000?
Some others I think you missed were the early Porche Boxters & SLK's, Mx5,
BMW Z3, the later 1990s Mini Coopers & the MGB GTMk2 to name a few.

I've owned a full spec 728i and i regret selling that car, unfortunately needed the money at the time. But consider the e38 as an investments and you will lose all your money 3x. Parts are NOT cheap, bushes and links are extremely expensive, engine drinks oil and needs a lot of care as all vanos from the time, electronics after 10 years (mine was at the time of seeling it) were already glitchy and needed attention, and mpg is ... well horrid 😅 that being said, i am currently looking into buying another one because it was the best all around car i ever had. Comfort spec seats are unmatched even by new 7 series, engine is quiet, it is lovely on the bends and while you do feel the need for at least 100 more hp, it doesn't push you to drive it hard to enjoy it, it is chill and relaxed
