This week on Basics, we take a look at two easy one-pot potato hash recipes: a classic and a sweet potato. Also this week I made a simple sage gin & tonic, which pairs nicely with all of the flavors going on in the potato hash.

"Do you have any leftover baked potatoes?"
No.
"Of course you do, you love baked potatoes."
Yes that's why I don't have any. And here you are with three. *Now* who doesn't love potatoes, Andrew?
this is my issue with people saying stirfry is made of leftovers. Who had leftovers of like 4 different vegetables and a meat?
@@Dragonwing16 people who eat a lot of meat and veggies.
Jon Yurek This comment has no right to be this funny
Blake If they eat a lot of it why do they have leftovers
@@r1pd33b0 Comparing the total amount of bought food is useless, as you already noticed. We'd better look at the ratio of bought food to eaten food, and here the total amount of food makes a difference: Assume you buy your groceries with 20% inaccuracy, meaning you under- or overestimate how much you're going to eat by 20% on average. If you buy 20 carrots and only use 80% of them, 4 are left. If you only buy 5, still making an error of 20%, there's only one carrot left. Thus, more leftovers in absolute numbers.
If everyone bought their groceries with perfect accuracy, there wouldn't be any leftovers at all and this discussion wouldn't make much sense, so we should go with the previous scenario.
So much for absolute numbers, but the the relative numbers might differ as well: People who eat a lot may actually be worse at predicting their future food intake, because a larger stomach means that natural fluctuations of your stomach size have a larger absolute impact on how much food you can take.
"Dinner for breakfast" - Andrew says cleverly to avoid cluing his audience to the fact that he's been smashing Gin and Tonics at 10am during lockdown like the rest of us hethens.
If you do eat and drink this combo any earlier in the day just call it brunch and you're good to go.

It is crazy that I have been in the food industry for 20 years and this is the first time I have seen the bacon pinch. I am blown away.
I'm going to cook bacon right now to try this
Mcdonalds is the food industry?
Yeah for real. I gotta try that next time I cook some.
I'm not a chef or anything, though. I just like bacon.
i too, have been in the industry for about 12 years, and have never seen that. I am in AWE
I’m new to cooking! I’ve cooked bacon before but never pinched it either, what is special about the pinch?
Last night my 13 year old watched this episode with me and whipped out an amazing version for dinner since we had the ingredients on hand. She's normally more of a baker, but you inspired her to cook!

The fact that you buckled the bacon in the middle is a life-changer. I've always begrudgingly snipped my bacon in half because it would never adequately fit in the pan while it was raw. definitely going to try that next time I cook some bacon!!!
I, too, was pretty excited at noticing this nifty wee trick. Good ol' Babish
I know that kinda threw me off. I have never seen that. I am so using that now.
Same here, it was like someone turned the light on in the room. And I go.."why didn't I think of that?"
I think we all learned something this day.
personally I just dealt with it and almost always had one or five pieces sticking to the sides of the pan when i went to flip.
True
I think this is the only time I've ever heard babish say the word microwave.
"microwave? you mean the window box in my kitchen that tells me the time?"
Gordon Ramsay wants to know your location
You won't hear this from Babish, but canned whole potatoes are perfect for this recipe. They're precooked, so you just have to slice them and fry them up. I like to add some corn and zucchini as well, and scramble eggs over the whole thing.
I didn't even know he had a microwave.
genuinely surprised he didn't say it "Mee-crow-wahv" or something like that tbh
Gotta say, using the microwave to precook the potatoes and not having to boil them makes me much more likely to actually make stuff with potatoes in it. That's legitimately just a really handy tip.
Babish: "But, potatoes alone do not a hash make"
Me: "🤔.....thats deep"
At the beginning of the video, I got an ad for “The Botantist” voiced by Babish. No like, an actual ad.

@@gelomelo44 He can't, actually. UA-cam ads are decided for each individual user by an algorithm based on their watching and browsing history, as well as their tendencies (picking certain videos and not picking others also affects this algorithm, like it decides you hate X because you didn't feel like watching it that day). Other stuff affects it too, like age and gender, Google search history, the apps you use etc.
So OP got the ad because they're probably looking into alcoholic products and like watching BWB.
