To clarify one point that I kind of glossed over VERY quickly in the Video... the MASSIVE advantage you have with ODK and Funkin (apart from Price) is that you are pretty much guaranteed that the Limes in the product are as fresh as fresh can be. They will literally be juiced within days of being Picked/Harvested. With Fresh Limes, you just haven't got that guarantee, Some could be weeks old before they make it to the UK shops! So while people diss on pre-packaged Lime juice, just realise, these products will be the freshest you can probably get, hence why they are top-notch quality. There's a reason Funkin has sold that Lime juice now for over a Decade to the Bar and Restaurant Trade!! It's because it's great quality, at half the price...and you haven't even got the Juicing labour either! Looking for a list of all my Rums, Spiced Rums, Flavoured Rums, Syrups, Liqueurs & Bitters?! Well, they're all listed out here; www.stevethebarman.com/post/my-rum-collection 🍹 And if you're looking to chat to other Rum Lovers, we'd LOVE you to join us in my Discord Community stblive.uk/discord
Great video Steve! I ordered some ODK after watching this and never thought it would beat fresh lime. Made a daquiri with plantation grand reserve, ODK and Giffard sugar syrup, I never would have believed it wasn't fresh lime. Because of the shelf life I will be using it rather than fresh from now on!
yeah... especially when you realise that the Lime juice in the bottle is literally Juiced within hours of being picked. So it's the freshest of the fresh! then bottled to preserve it. So it stands to reason that its really good!!!
Amazing to see this video, so well done, and it's amazing to see your excitement! I'm also going to do a similar test in a couple of weeks, adding in the mix: freshly squeezed but juice frozen for 3 weeks, freshly squeezed from a defrosted lime. And a better quality supermarket-version, as you really used the cheapest one from that option 😉
Yeah, I would do Lemon, but pretty pointless on a Rum Channel. Except for a few grogs, Lemon hardly gets called for. Love Blind tastings though. REALLY opens your eyes up!
Great video Steve! Here in the States, there is a brand called Santa Cruz Organic 100% Lime Juice. I was super skeptical but it's spot on and does absolutely great in a pinch or frankly when you have a large event and don't feel like squeezing a bunch of limes.
yeah... I mean, it's what i kind of say in the video... with that stuff, you're pretty much guaranteed its REALLY fresh Limes being juiced. So it just literally comes down to the packaging. it's evident now, that the foil pouches work better than the Plastic bottle of ODK. I dunno about the US, but in the UK we don't grow citrus, we not got the climate... so we have absolutely no guarantee how old a "fresh Lime" is. Best guess, at least 3 weeks... The packaged will be juiced on day 2-3. Funkin did claim they juiced on the day they were picked. So in effect, Funkin will actually alwasy be the freshest lime juice!
What was interesting to me was the color difference of almost each of the cocktail…except for the top 2. There was foam on some, not on others. During the winter here on the West Coast USA (in the small populated area that I live in) we sometimes don’t even get limes. And if we do they’re partially brown or so completely dried out inside that you can’t even get a half an ounce from one whole lime. And with the drought and modifications that have been happening, it occurs with in most citrus that comes through my markets. I stand by the Funk and passion fruit. Now I can’t go through a bag in a very short time. But I do freeze the juice in my little one by one ice cube trays those are about an ounce and it keeps pretty well. Seeing as I am rarely see passion fruit juice come through in any better form. I’m glad to hear that the Funk in line is nice. I’m not saying I would freeze it. But, I would have enough to experiment with I guess! I do wish they made smaller bags for home bartending. Great video today, very informative.
yeah... so they all did froth up. But 3 held more than the others. I did have my suspicions after I came back into which was which. Well Concentrate vs 100%. Cos of the whole Pineapple juice thing. the fresher that is, the frothier it stays. Same with Orange. BUT... it was only on Taste that i got fresh... and actually i thought i could see tiny bits of Lime. But you get that in ODK too! 😂 But going back to the froth... when i came back in, I actually thought what if the 2 with "Other nasties in" actually held froth more. So wasn't 100% sure. It could've been ODK cos of the Antioxidant and the 2 Concentrates with more froth!!!
Interesting results Steve. I've always wondered if there's that big of a difference. Thanks for doing this! I often use Nellie & Joe's Key West Lime Juice in my daiquiris and margaritas and think that it tastes good. Fresh squeezed limes are always going to be better if the limes are fresh but with the cost of a small lime here being around $.60, it's definitely more expensive to use fresh. I'd love to try Funkin but the price is quite high here in the U.S.
So glad you done this video. I love margaritas! Over Christmas I bought the ODK and was very happy with it. Especially, as you say, the shelf life. I bought 3 bottles and used 1.5 so half is in my fridge and I know I can use it for the next few weeks. I’d definitely be interested in buying the funkin to try. Especially as it was your stand out winner. Also, can I ask your opinion on your fave triple sec to use in a margarita? Thanks 😊 keep up the great work!
Ha, the Triple Sec is an ongoing thing. The only one i haven't tried yet is Giffard Premium Curacao Triple Sec. (it's actually coming tomorrow). I have it on good authority from people I trust that it is AMAZING. And having all the other Premium Giffards, I know that the rest of the range is top notch. But at the moment, Fortunella is what i use...slightly softer Orange (it's actually Kumquat)...and I love Mandarine Napolean. Thats insanely good. Bartenders swear by Pierre Ferrand... but i've never been totally sold on it. I keep trying it, but it never hits the spot for me!
Although not a Triple Sec, Agavero Orange Liqueur works nicely. It's an orange flavored liqueur made with tequila. Not sure if @@StevetheBarmanUK has tried it, but would be interesting to get his opinion on it.
great stuff i've been debating getting some lime juice rather than buying fresh limes, but i only make a few cocktails max on a weekend n not every weekend, guess i should make more eh
Funkin hell! That was a good video 🤣 👍 i was hoping the monin rantcho would be higher because its easy to get but sadly its just not good. Lee has some explaining to do 🤣
Yup... As soon as i looked at the bottle properly, i realised what it was. Should've noticed on the Livestream really! Nevermind. That said, it wasn’t really terrible... but it wasn't top notch either
Hey, Lee here talking. Ok ok, I’m gonna need to step up and defend myself here! When we talked about it in the Drinkstuff vid, I said it was lime juice, but I didn’t say it was fresh and I didn’t say it was 100%, I also specifically said it had artificial preservatives in it. It helps elongate the shelf life to 3 months after opening at ambient temp. Also, we did genuinely do a taste test comparison a couple of years back when it launched (there’s even pics of me pulling a sour reaction face that’s quite entertaining 😜). We tested fresh lime, Monin lime rantcho, and Funkin. We did it blind and the Monin came out ahead of Funkin by a mile! Not sure if they’ve changed the recipe, or if we had a bad batch, but it genuinely came out better. I reckon we need to do a retest together, which will also be a good excuse for us to have a few daiquiris together 😜
An old barman once told me to always use freshly pressed 😋 and it's also one of your five a day so you can't go wrong. That's five cocktails a day. And another thing, where are we gonna get our spent lime garnishes from...😛
I really like your review videos. They are awesome! In respect to lime juice, did you ever try and compare lime super juice with fresh and bottled lime juice? :) Cocktail Time with Kevin Kos and The Educated Barfly did videos on that one and found it to be really, really good!
Being brutally honest…. No. Not tried the Super juice… and I won’t. I totally get it from a Bartender point of view. And an enthusiast who has plenty of time on their hands. But it’s not a practise I preach about. I help people with low skills and little time. I don’t do faffing around. I rarely make my own syrups, I buy them. Same with Lime…if I can buy something cheaply, I will. There’s no right or wrong…I’m just too old to be the cool kid at school going after Michelin Stars in Bartending. 😇😉😂
Well I had to watch this one didn’t I? I have to say Funkin have upped their game, but I think for home bartenders that extra shelf life (and not even in a fridge) on ODK probably makes it the sweet spot.
Ok I need some help here… I’m from the USA. At about the 4 min mark he says that he put lime juice on his pancakes.. Are pancakes something different across the pond?
So. Pancakes are the same thing. But. Can also be crepe like. But on Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) the old school traditional serving is Pancakes with Lemon Juice and Brown/Demerara Sugar. That bottle of fake Lemon, in the 1950s > 2000s that’s all that was ever sold for. It’d come out at the end of Jan, and disappear off the shelves by mid March.
@@StevetheBarmanUK Very interesting. Thanks for the explanation.. Here in the states we have a product just like it. Yes it’s awful too.. Great video I was convinced the frothier one was the real lime.
