I need to hear more of Pratt’s “accent” before I judge it. There’s this slight New York/Brooklyn twinge to the voice that I don’t fully hate, but the real star of this teaser was Jack Black. He’s giving his all to do this snarly & fun voice for the King of the Koopas.
Yeah i mean it makes sense for him to have a brooklyn accent if he doesnt have an Italian one
But if he did a goofy stereotypical Italian accent, that would ruin the immersion.
It's bizarre to see the mocap for Jack Black transferred onto Bowser, but at least it's... something
I am actually on board for a Brooklyn Mario, and always assumed that would be the case. Let's be honest, would 1.5 - 2 hours of Charles Martinet shouting "Wahoo!" really be tolerable or would it just end up being obnoxious? It's perfect in a video game setting when Mario has no actual dialogue, but I don't know about an entire film.
The thing is that a lot of Italians went to NY and "acquired" the accent, but still it doesnt feel right to me to give Mario such a strong American accent, like they didn't even try to fake an Italian accent (thank god that would've been cringy especially for me and Italians in general) so idk how to feel about this
Nick, the penguins exists in Mario 64....
And Galaxy 1 and 2...
my man name drops galaxy which is dripping in penguins
And many Mario Kart games.
Ig it’s all part of being uneducated lmao
And nsmb wii
This trailer really made me feel like it's been my lifelong dream to become Mario.

One day, we will all become Mario
And when everyone’s Mario.

@Don't read profile photo ok i wont :)
Idk why but Nick saying "he's not Italian?" While the epic mario theme blast full force in the background is so fuckin funny to me
when you're at the club and you can barely hear your friend talking
I didn’t even catch the first “he’s not Italian”. Fucking funny indeed lmfao
It's like the face pure disappointment lol
the penguins are the ones from mario 64 and new super mario bros wii
they definitely did this so that the mushroom Kingdom would have more to it rather than just be an assortment of levels and platforms in grasslands
make it feel more alive per se
@WoodCraft Kits he made it sound like they had just been added in because Illumination, he clearly didn’t know that they were from Mario games
@WoodCraft Kits Maybe the fact that they haven't been used in mainline games since 2009? Which is honestly great, I was afraid they'd go way too generic and not implement anything from Mario's legacy, I hope more game specific characters and places are in the movie.
I thought it seemed like the penguins were in a separate kingdom. It might be similar to Odyssey where he travels around to multiple different kingdoms in the “Mushroom World” for lack of a better term.
@WoodCraft Kits Seeing how generic the Mario characters and places have been in the last few years outside of mainline games, me and many other fans have a reason to be worried.
@WoodCraft Kits Yes, it is a good thing, that's what I was trying to say.
Overthinking and high expectations? I think you might have misunderstood me, if anything I didn't think much of it and my expectations were below average, and still now I'm not that crazy about it, I'm really holding my judgment for the final product, I want to be skeptical so that if it's good I'll be happy, and if bad I will not be disappointed.
In those pre-trailer interviews, Chris Pratt sounds like a man who is questioning what he is doing with his life.
And Jack Black sounds like a man who knows EXACTLY what he's doing with his life.
The penguins are from Shiver City / World 5 (NSMB DS). How do you not know these are Mario characters? There have been literal penguins in the Mario series since 64 🤣
Other languages have a better Italian accent for Mario, especially in PT-BR it sounds way better, it also helps they chose actual voice actors who usually dub cartoons for this.
French was pretty good too.
@@lotus_flower2001 Charles Martinet himself is French
I hope they don't get his "original voice" for the Brazilian dub (aka the Chris Pratt one and only voice actor)
@@hohohodrigues the clips are available to watch right now. imo it sounds pretty good.
Can confirm, in PT-BR they made Mario have an italian accent
I’m surprised to see how many people genuinely expected Chris Pratt to do a full on Italian accent.
From the moment I saw he and Charlie Day were cast I automatically assumed the bros would have more of a Brooklyn accent like the cartoons and 1993 movie.
I am not gonna lie, the Chris Pratt choice was the weakest of the bunch but from the minute they dropped the cast I was INTO it
I don’t know why people were expecting him to be Italian or why they thought that would ever be anything but the most cursed thing but they set a vibe with their cast and I liked it.
Same here. Charles Martinets Mario Isn’t the only interpretation of Mario that exists.
I didn't expect him to do a full Italian accent and yet I'm still disappointed
The issue isn't the accent, it's the lack of bounce. Mario is constantly holding his vowels and going up in pitch, Chris Pratt doesn't do that at all in the trailer (whereas the Mario voice actors in other languages who are all getting praise had VERY bouncy pronunciation).
You can't speak flatly with a Brooklyn accent and say you're doing Mario, you're just doing some Brooklyn dude. You need to have that constant lilting and bounce
@@averyeml who would you choose than?? Martinet wouldnt work anyway. I'm curious
Mario has had a Brooklyn accent before and it sounded good. He is definitely doing an accent in the trailer but it is very slight. Plus the fact that it is very clearly Chris Pratt’s voice, so it is kind of hard to get over. I personally think everything about this movie looks and feels good, I even kind of like Chris Pratt as Mario, it will take some getting used to for sure, but once we are watching it and seeing it in action it will all feel fine.
I think we need a longer sentence to really gage the accent, I don't think they chose good first lines, but I agree I think him having a normal voice is something I can easily get used to
@nugget I really have no doubt that when he “wahoos” or makes other key Mario noises that he will sound like Mario. I think that for his main speaking voice he will be Chris Pratt with a slight accent, and for the more Mario sounding lines he will just sound like Mario, either way it will still be fine. We need to hear more before we make a complete opinion or idea of how it’s going to be.
@@pixelatedgames8068 and I think that makes sense, just of the voice lines we know are mario being happy, so his voice getting a bit higher for a wahoo would work
Just to inform, Mario's original voice was a guy with a New York accent , not a high-pitched stereotypical Italian, that voice came after so it's not far-fetched that he has a regular voice, the Italian accent was more specifically designed for only video game sound effects which is why Mario doesn't have dialogue in the games, but in the shows and the old movie he had a New York accent. If people understood this they will have more ease of mind
Yeah is Nintendo who is doing this movie they fucking now that shit. People need inform themselves
i mean literally the first time charles did the voice when he invented it apparently he kept talking in that voice for somlong they ran out of tape so like
not saying you dont have a point about the original new yorker voice but saying "it was specifically designed for short clips" is wildly inaccurate, charles used his mario voice for full sentences for a while before they were chopped up for sm64
Yes, thank you. I kinda regret saying similar now, since you already did, but I actually tried sourcing video games. I watched MatPat's prediction for this movie, but honestly I just don't really know how Mario came to have an Italian accent. I didn't know what he should have, but Italian feels random, right? And apparently the games at the start might have been made thinking of New York blue-collar work. And New Donk City from Odyssey is hinted to being where Mario came from. That's where Pauline is. That's where construction sites similar to stuff seen in Donkey Kong and Wrecking Crew are, and it's where we fight some Donkey Kong thing iirc AND it's literally called "New DONK City"
Lou Albano was the original voice of Mario, and he was awesome. As a child of the 80s, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show was God. Although Martinet is awesome, deep down, I'll always think of Albano's voice as the original - and best - version of Mario.
Lol "ease of mind". The expression is "peace of mind".
I'm still on guard because we were all pleasantly surprised to see none of the predictable tropes in the trailer we were all so convinced we were going to see. I've been burned by good trailers before and there's absolutely every possibility that Mario and Luigi will open a random door in Peach's castle to a room full of Toads dancing to Purple Lamborghini or some shit.
Lol
I sincerely hope that Toad scene happens exactly as you described it
@@babylonian Well, we can hope for the sequel.

While I don’t think Jack Black entirely captured the voice of bowser, you could tell he was really trying with the role and I think he did a great job for what he was given. I feel like they could’ve cast way better people, but Jack Black was not that bad imo
To me, his voice needs to be deeper and a bit raspier but I can understand why they didn't do that bc it'd be hard to understand him lol

Super Mario Bros is a movie of all time
Why are you surprised about the Penguins? Penguins have been a race in Mario ever since 64. They have been in multiple games.
i really like how you’ve made your mustache look physically as close as you can to the actual mario for this video. dedication
He's got a Brooklyn-ish accent. I personally prefer this voice for Mario considering he was canonically born and raised there and listening to Mario talking in the voice from his games for over an hour would get very annoying fast.
Even though I think he’s trolling us, every time Nick says “Mayrio”, I flinch.
Very well timed with Nick entering is Mustache Arc. Lookin' dapper bro! Also gonna have to disagree with you about not liking the New York/Brooklyn accent, because as far back as the Super Show with Captain Lou Albano (fly high) Mario was characterized as a plumber from Brooklyn who somehow ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom, which is clearly what they're going for here. It is jarring after having the Martinet voice for so long, but I like the callback to an earlier iteration of the character.
i think he should be an even grimier brooklyn plumber with as many italian and cuisine jokes as possible
I don't think that's what they were going for; they just wanted Chris Pratt because he's Chris Pratt. Sorry if I just sound like a Mario-head, but I don't consider that tv show or the old movie anywhere near canon. Nintendo is really cautious about how Mario is presented and branded now. I think anything from 80s, 90s, and even early 00s is questionable in canon, and Nintendo wouldn't want Mario to be presented like that at all. Don't hate his voice admittedly, but it could of been way better with someone else or with some audio editing
@Anonymous
>Mario
>canon
>exclude the 80s, 90s, and some of the 00s
Yeah bro the deep lore and narrative threads of Mario platformers and spin-offs are hyper-dependent on the exclusion of any and all media consumed by people who actually grew up with the series before 2005.
@@glasket_ this is what autism looks like
@@glasket_ I didn't mean for it to come off as all media from that time, I just mean a lot of stuff from that time is questionable. You can't not enjoy the media; I think the tv show was pretty interesting, but Nintendo doesn't acknowledge its existence or anything like that because they don't see it as apart of the Mario brand. A lot of that stuff also weren't really narrative threads, it was just stuff that was often made up for convenience of whatever they're doing, like Mario plumbing in the real word, or Luigi reading about what a certain leader did in WWII. Just weird stuff like that where, even though Nintendo put it out there themselves, they themselves don't seem consider it apart of the canon anymore because that's not how they want the brand to be seen. Up to the person to decide if they think it's canon or not, but over time as they keep making more Mario things without having that media in mind, story holes in that canon are going to start appearing, so that's why I think the way I do
I think they changed Mario's voice because using Martinet Mario's voice for the whole movie would get old really fast and just wouldn't work. In works in snippets in-game, but for a 90 minute movie, you gotta change it and make it more palatable for longer dialogue. I think with more Mario lines I can be on-board for this Mario
Though Charles is a good voice actor not just for sound effects and could also give Mario a tolerable movie voice I feel. Chris Pratt seems like a marketing thing to me
I think they could have easier asked him to do Mario's voice, but bring the pitch down a tad and turn the accent down a bit. They way it still sounds like him but it's more palatable
I loved when Mario said "It's Mario time!" Then proceeded to Mario all over the place. Truly the movie of all time.
I loved when you shut the fuck up! Then proceeded to shut the fuck up all over the place. Truly a shut the fuck up of all time

@@stiflinghat9897 really? I didn’t know that, thanks for informing me!
@CF333 You're welcome. I'm glad I could help!
If you're gonna cast a Hollywood superstar as a funny New England Mario, then you cast Danny DeVito, no question.
charlie day and devito as the two brothers wouldve been too good to be true
I'm so mad since Charles said he would love to work in the movie but nobody approached him but they only gave him a cameo
Personally, I think it's better that he's not voicing Mario.
He will obviously be the best Mario, but his voice only works for small soundbytes, not to mention that it started degrading a bit; you can notice that in Mario Odyssey or even when he's speaking normally.
For a movie, it would kind of be grating to have that voice for at least 1.5 hours. If you don't believe me, hear the lines from Mario teaches typing, voiced by Martinet
@@bigshrekhorner He would not only have to voice Mario, but also like at least 50% of the cast, which would be too much work for one person and also too much money to pay to one single person. The decisions they have made about the voices are perfectly fine for me, you have to also keep in mind that they have to translate the entire movie for many countries, and having the original Mario voice in one version and not in every one would be a bit weird
@@LuigixD I especially like how Toad sounds. They could have easily Minion-ified the Toads but they chose a rather not annoying voice, at least compared to the average game Toad voice (although the other Toads could still be Minion-ified, so we will have to wait to see)
I agree it would have been great and easy
Martinet's an amazing voice actor, but his zany, high pitched take on Mario works best in small, bite sized clips within a game. In the context of a feature length film, though, I think it would be incredibly grating to hear that voice in regular dialogue.
"I thought Mario looked like Mario from the Mario games" is a very good sentence.
The problem I have with Martinet doing the movie is that the real Mario voice would get grating extremely fast. I think thats why Lou Albano and every other Mario was voiced by a different guy if its gonna be a long time hearing their voice.

I feel like us older fans of these franchises can't help but have a certain amount of cynicism about new content like this but honestly this trailer sold me on the movie, i also feel like Nintendo won't allow this opportunity to pass them by to redeem themselves for the Bob Hoskins Mario film as much as i love Hoskins that one was just abysmal and though i have no love for the Minions the animation shown so far looks phenomenal and i feel like i'll enjoy this movie just due to the stunning visuals it's no doubt going to have.
Same. As someone who is very critical of new movies and modern Hollywood, and as a longtime hardcore Mario fan, this just looked great to me. Bowser was perfect. The use of the theme was perfect. Now I just need to see Mario jump.
This is exactly how I feel about it. I was not expecting the trailer to look this good. I think you could have probably got a better voice actor than Chris Pratt, but I have to see a longer trailer to really decide on his voice. I’m definitely gonna see this, If the other trailers are good too😂

Besides the funky canned phrasing of "It's been a lifelong dream of mine to become Mario", the way he delivers that sentence, his face, his eyes, it's not even a half-truth. He's reading that one straight off the script with no attachment.
It contrasts especially hard with the reverence with which he remembers *stomping koopas*

Just a crazy idea I can up with, something I’ve been kicking around in my head for a while, but wouldn’t it be crazy if they had the guy who did the Mario voice do the Mario voice??
I think one problem is the high pitched voice works far better for voice clips, then a va role of a movie.
I don't know about anybody else, but as much as I love Charles for the GOAT that he is... do you not think that voice might get a _little_ annoying after an hour and a half instead of the normal sound bytes from the games...? I think it goes to show how Charles really should be respected for his performances as mario , he could have done the New York accent but he didn’t and he made probably the most iconic voice of all time
I fucking lost it when nick called the penguins "minions"
To be fair, the most "Italian" we've gotten out of Mario is "Its-a me!" and a "mama mia!" So taking the Italian out of Mario doesn't change much, to be honest.
It looks like they're going a more grounded approach with Mario, with him being taken to the Mushroom kingdom for the first time, probably coming from a more realistic environment like New Donk City or something; so I can understand them giving him the type of voice you can take a seriously. I don't think I can take "WAH! YAHA!! WAHOOO!!! OHHA NO!" seriously, and I definitely couldn't listen to it for an hour+. Chris doesn't give him the most groundbreaking voice or anything, but its serviceable.
You misunderstand what people want
I mean, given that it *seems* to be Mario's first time here, and being an otherwise normal person. Having Chris "I sound like a normal person" Pratt works for that
"thank you for-a to playing my game" is quite a bit longer than those examples you gave.
Reminds me of the show
What’s wrong with being goofy though? When we think of Mario we think of goofy wahoo man, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. I’d even go so far as to say I think we need more goofy, fun, lighthearted movies out there and that not everything has to be grounded and realistic to be good.
The mario voice actor wouldn't work because i dont think anyone could listen to mario sounds for 2 hours

it seriously hurt my feelings when you said the penguins were just minions
When Nick saw the penguins and shouted "Minions??" I was _sidewinded_
Honestly, my take is that Mario was NOT supposed to be Italian. It sounds like, sincerely, the origins planned for Mario is he comes from New Donk City. This is clearly shown to be an origins movie, so he's not going to be Italian.
Maybe he WILL gain that accent. Or he won't. Because frankly idk where he would get that accent if he comes from New Donk City. But a New York accent doesn't just "cut it." No, actually I think you are right, and Miyamoto is the reason that the "voice of Mario" is not voicing Mario. Because Mario is supposed to be from New York, not Italy. (Not sure why New York and not somewhere in Japan, coming from a Japanese dude, but that's his take.)
Also, why...are you HOPING to have a negative reaction? For the content I guess, but you think ppl want to see negativity? Because if you search for negativity, you will find it.
Personally, I prefer ppl being surprisingly positive.
Yeah, good thing nobody in New York City has a stereotypical Italian accent 🙄
Well for a long time he did have a New York accent - i.e. in most of the cartoons.
Isn’t it actually canon that Mario is from New York? So that’s probably why they’re keeping that backstory and not changing it so that he’s from Italy or Japan. But of course, they don’t want it to actually be connected to the real world, so they’re gonna name it New Donk City instead (and since that already exists in Odyssey, why not?) but I’m sure it’ll still basically be an animated New York City.
@@MiloMurphysLaw Nintendo has downplayed the isukai interpretation for a long time, though it seems likely this movie will play it straight, it is the backstory that appeals to me the most even if it is a bit generic.

I jumped with glee when I saw this vid in my feed. Watching the trailer, the whole time I was thinking ‘What would Nick think of this…’, and when I saw Mario’s squished face and hyper realistic hair, I knew I *had* to see your reaction
In all honesty, I appreciate your hot take but I dont think the writing is that bad, especially with thw Toad really. I dont find it that bad. Also, I wont expect the writing to be bad either. As someone who has a bit of experience with design, especially the character deaign. I could confidently say this film is a very faithful one as well as professionally good animation, especailly with thw stretch and bend part where Mario got scared of Toad. Also, the easter eggs are fantastic and could be also great for imagery. The environment is unique than anyother Mario game yet it still is faithful. To elaborate further; more like finding the middle grounf wjere ye could do your own thing with using the source material without going far.
That soundtrack sounded truly epic and cinematic at least, that alone got me pumped
I think this is honestly the best they could come up with with this cast so they did a good job imo.
While I'm not a huge fan of Chris Pratt being chosen for Mario's voice, I don't understand why everyone is so thrown off by him having a Brooklyn accent and not Italian. Does no one remember the cartoon or Lou Albano doing the Mario?
It seems you've wanted to be so disappointed, but you've not been disappointed as much as you would have liked. Way to go champ.
I like Chris' Mario voice from the little we heard. The normal Mario voice doesn't work well for full sentences and would be so hard to listen to for a full movie.
i mean the mario voice could be better but it reminds me of the super show and hotel mario so that's kinda a winner in my book
If Mario doesn't do a single fortnite dance or any dance at all then this movie already win.
Is he allowed to do the MC shuffle dance he does in Odyssey?
Mario gonna hit the griddy in the minutes 15:00, watch as it happens in the movie
You have extremely low standards
Mario did have a Brooklyn accent for older media he was in, and I kinda think they're going more that route. I don't hate the voice used. We'll see how it is in the full movie, but so far it's not terrible imo.
Also Jack Black sounds amazing so far.
I feel like having to listen to 2 hours of "WAHOO LETSA GO" on loop would get really annoying, so tbh I'm kinda glad they went with something more tame
Gonna push back hard on the 'the Mario game VA should do Mario!' I don't think I could listen to that voice giving actual dialogue for hours straight lol.
idk why you thought Mario as a New Yorker hadn't been done when that was the default English voice before Charles Martinet. If anything I prefer a pizzapasta, YTP-tier Brooklyn Mario to Italian stereotype Mario, and wish Crispy Rat had gone all the way in that direction.
Speaking of Charles Martinet, I feel bad for him not being Mario but he's getting up there and clearly struggling with just the normal Mario lines in new Mario games. And has he ever done full voiced dialogue as Mario, outside of arguably that old "Mario Go Fish!" game? I don't think getting a new voice actor is the worst decision for the movie, although I agree Chris Pratt sticks out like a sore thumb when literally EVERY other actor, even ones not known for doing voice acting, is doing great character voices.
Did bro just say Mayrio
They probably didn't have Mario's voice actor voice mario because he's not an actor for movies, the medium is completely different between saying its a me mario! And voicing an entire movie lol.
That could be, but while Martinet is mainly known for doing the Mario voice he has also a voice actor for other mediums like movies. He even has some acting roles
but charles martinet hurts his voice when he does the mario voice for too long
BREAKING: Man Spends 15 Minutes calling Mario "Merio"
Okay, but it HAS been a lifelong dream of mine to become Yoshi, and that's a fact.
They used to call me Yoshi back in highschool
@@Donut-im9lk Because you would swallow them and turn them into eggs
i hope that's not true
@@Neimonster Yes, that, and also I was a proud turtle-consumer (This is not recommended in the slightest)
ah yes thank you moustache man for your reaction
Mario is Italian, but he's got that NY accent.
As a lover of the OG TV show, it's beautiful. :)
The "don't touch that you'll die" from Toad is legit actually. In the "real" Super Mario Bros. 2 from Japan (ie. Lost Levels), there were purple death mushrooms that would insta-kill you. This was a reference to that.
we live in the year 2022 my man still saying mayrio
mayrio
I'm cautiously optimistic for this movie
I can't get over the placeholder music. It's been 12 years since Inception dropped and every movie still sounds like Inception. Not even dumb kids movies get to have original music in them.
Chris Pratt's "accent" reminds me of a higher pitched version of Lou's Mario from Super Mario Bros. Super Show. I grew up with it and loved the show so a brooklyn accent for Mario kinda works for me. The only off putting thing is how much it just sounds like Chris.
ok most of the characters work, but mario still sounds weird. i guess its because mario's voice is so popular that im 90% sure marios voice became a stereotype on how italians speak, other than that one.
They sucked out the pasta sauce out of Mario :(
"What do you think the word trailer means?"
What do you think the word teaser means?
You people were genuinely expecting the whole movie to sound like Mario's Game Gallery?
