Watching the premiere chat completely explode after the revelation that he never played Danganronpa has been so far the funniest experience I've had in youtube. You could never write something like this in fiction.
@@fixedfunshow Yeah, but the weird thing about being obsessed with Maizono is that she's literally the template character that dies in the first hour of story. For anyone to reach any level of obsession, you could infer that said person has at least some emotional closure developed into that specific character. Maybe he played the post-game of DR1 or V3, and THEN he realized that she was the perfect girl for him or something. But no, he literally just saw her, thought she was cute, and decided to show to the world his relentless infatuation for Sayaka Maizono, that's it. And this is a reminder that sometimes there are no big explanations in life, it just happened. As simple as that.
It would be one thing if it was your average two bedroom home or apartment, but it's not. Calling THAT a house is being modest. That is an anime MANSION. Edit: I think he changed the title, the original referred to this property as the "Anime House"
Honestly, the fact Tobyn’s dad wrote grease makes SOOOO much sense. The original broadway production of grease was a satire and parody about the 1950’s and 1950’s tropes. It seems his son is doing something along the same thing.

I like his parents' reaction, because it's neither dismissive nor delusionally "supportive," it feels very sober with a mix of "our kid's a bit of a nut" and "we're kinda proud of him". That's really nice. Also, as much as I still think this hobby is a bit off, I gotta hand it to Tobyn that he's making an actual craft out of it. I work in advertisement and before the pandemic, on-site presentations with prints on black cardboards were still a thing (and our biggest misery in the office.) I've gotten pretty good with a cutter knife over the years, but it still pales to what Tobyn is pulling off: seamless, perfect straight cuts along the print, no ruler, and on an A3-sized sheet as well. That's real skill. Good on him!! Thanks for this documentary, Nick!
35:00 "Many people are scared of looking weird by being who they really are, and when you do that your soul suffers as you're not living the way that your heart wants to be" God... That really hit close to home... Man's spitting wisdom.

He is “internetionally” considered Sayaka’s husbando, and I don’t think anyone dares to step up to compete. I can’t think of anyone who can monopoly a waifu in such a way. This is so crazy that it’s formidable.
At first I was weirded out by him, but now I respect him. I kinda wish I had something I could just consistently fall on & enjoy without a worry about what others think. That’s really something special.
@@just_a_guy9688 Sounds like a good start for him though. If you have a lot of money you can just throw it at crypto stuff until you make more I guess right?

No! You can't do this, man, don't expose the Sayaka guy! Seriously though, I'm familiar with this guy and I cannot wait to get an insight into his mind. His papercraft work is genuinely impressive. The 3d stuff especially.
Once they showed the "weird room" I got it. Before that I thought he was just an otaku obsessed with waifus, but his original creations are (horrifying) art. The kind of stuff you might see in museums. And then I realized the rest of it is art too, just not in a form we're used to seeing. Very cool guy and I'm glad someone empathetic like Nick got the chance to show a glimpse of his life.
Creating something larger than oneself is natural human behavior, the same reason why the pyramids, skyscrapers, the staute of liberty, and basically any monument is just that. What this guy is doing is not that strange when you look at it from that perspective but instead of doing buildings he is just doing waifu cut-outs
Yeah pretty much this. It’s conceptual art, although I don’t know whether he articulates it like this himself. I’ve seen vaguely similar pieces to the ‘weird room’ at shows before.
His dad being one of the world's most famous playwriters was a crazy plottwist but it explains why he seems to have infinite money and space. Other than "autism" being the first word that I think of when I see this, it's just crazy how rich you must have to be to do stuff like this on this kind of scale

His local IT store probably considers him to be their favourite customer. Or maybe he just buy ink in bulk straight from the factory and the people there thinks that he must be some sort of business owner, instead of a really passionate cardboard cutout maker.
Suddenly I don’t feel so weird anymore… when I was 12 in 2002, I figured out that if you print from Paint on the school computer, it prints a picture on many papers. So I used like 50 pages to print a real size version of Yuki from Fruits Basket. And put it on my wall in my room. I also covered all of my walls, every single little space, in pictures of my favorite mangas. Half my room was dedicated to Arina Tanemura. Every inch that wasn’t furniture was covered. It was mostly cause I didn’t like my wallpaper, haha. But yeah now I don’t feel so abnormal anymore. Phew. (I don’t do that anymore though lmao)
Did you spend a huge amount of money on that or did your school not have a printing limit? At my school you had some free prints and then you had to pay to print more.
"Abnormal" and "eccentric" people are often the most interesting. I've always gravitated toward the folks that others see as being weird, and the sort of social outcasts who were seen as strange simply because their interest were outside the mainstream, and many of those weirdos are still my friends to this day. If more folks did what they were passionate about, and expressed themselves how they wanted without letting others opinions dictate how they live their lives, I think this world would be a far more kind place, and it'd definitely be a hell of alot more fun!
I cannot be convinced otherwise that Tobyn Jacobs isn't Michael Reeve's long lost twin brother who grew up with another mother and gets dopamine rushes like no other.
This was a much needed deep-dive on Tobyn. I could tell he was satirical from the start, but the commitment to the bit is even more absurd than I thought - I have respect for the man's dedication. Also, his dad's a legend - so big ups to that.
A lot of people were giving him crap before and honestly I think Sonichu and it’s maker kinda ruined a lot of people’s ability to trust in the baseline sanity and goodness of most people. Makes it hard to tell who’s satirical and artistically driven or just nuts.
Imagine already being a huge fan of grease and the people who made it before watching this video, and randomly the dude who wrote the play turns out to be his dad
There's a fine line between eccentricity and insanity, and Tobyn casually uses that line as a jump rope. Truly, "the devil works fast, but Tobyn works faster." (Quotes because it's not my joke - someone @'d Tobyn when the new Hololive members debuted to ask him to do life-size FuwaMoco cutouts, and he responded with a photo of them completed and standing within an hour, prompting that response) Also his original art is horrifying but super cool. This man is clearly an artist and crafter first, anime fan second, and knowing that makes it all make more sense.
I don't know if dedication is the right word. He has rich parents who're funding everything. Give me a multimillion dollar house and I probably wouldn't mind using printers and scissors.
As someone working in print for a few years now, his workflow and process for how he makes these is immensely impressive! At the start I Immediately was thinking "Oh he definitely has a wide-format printer or has a good connection with a local shop." Nope. All done with consumer level materials. A true artist through and through.
I'm especially impressed that none of that was done with a continuous 'plotter format' printer; I'd assumed (wrongly) that was how he started since my school had to air gap theirs to prevent students from *accidentally* making larger-than-life posters with a few mis-clicks (while browsing) w/ the 'fit to page' default left on. (And using up the pigment/ink)
This video is such a trip, how the twist unravels one by one. And when it revealed that his dad wrote a successful musical, now it made sense why they are very supportive. They understand art very well and want him to pursue his own vision of art.
I love his parents. They're just honest enough to be like "you're kinda weird, kiddo" but they love him enough to say "alright, you can build a giant paper tank in the kitchen". It makes sense though, considering who his father is. And I can understand why Tobyn has been hiding that history. He probably wants to make his own life, not just be forever known as the son of the guy that wrote Grease.
@@TobynJacobs Hey I just wanted to say it's really interesting hearing hearing your story and art process. I've seen a couple of your videos floating around and I always wondered how you made them, so thank you :)

Wouldn’t be surprised if he does some thing with his art donating to tree planting charities. He seems very self-aware, for pieces he doesn’t plan to keep around paper mache as a scaffold for his sculptural pieces is a great way to recycle!
@@romannasuti25for what it's worth, you shouldn't feel the need to plant a tree for using a lot of paper. the paper companies already do that and if the paper is from the US, the wood is from a new growth forest so you're good. any real environmental impact of using lots of paper would mainly come from the transportation infrastructure that gets the paper on store shelves

Yayoi worked her ass off to get where she is and often was mocked or had her ideas stolen from her. Additionally, she broke into the American art world as a woman from a foreign country. This kid was born with a silver spoon and parents who are supportive (which is good), but are also enabling him to allow his passion to overtake their comfort (bad). There is a big difference.
@@raspdereWho gives a shit where someone comes from? Isn't the point of art that anybody, no matter your background, can partake in it? Why do we care if the guy is rich? Why can't some artists just be appreciated even when they were born with a silver spoon?
I love how both of you spelled it differently and missed. Her name is Yayoi Kusama. She is not exactly famous for her mental health, so let's hope this guy's case is better.
One thing I appreciate about Nick is he speaks with and about these people on their own terms. He never makes jokes that he subject isn't comfortable with, and tries to understand what their life is like without ever judging. Not necessarily treating them as if they were "normal", but treating their eccentricities as just another aspect of the human whole, rather than their defining quality. Excellent qualities for making actually interesting and thought-provoking content.
I think it's super sweet that his parents support him, even if they don't truly get it all the time. He seems nice and harmless, he's an artist just doing what makes him happy. Some of my best friends over the years have been eccentrics, many other so-called normal people thought they were weird or that there was something wrong with them, but they were just living in the world and making their own little pocket of it how they wanted. I think there is something beautiful in that.
That’s what i think as well. Feel like a very rough exhibition to me. Tidy it up and redesign the space with some story. It can easy rebrand as an art exhibition lol. Pretty cool. It’s just so interesting how he would do things that big and extreme and i want to understand his story or reason behind it. 😂
It's fitting that the characters in Danganronpa are stylized to look like cardboard cutouts ingame, too. That army of Monokumas looked just like it would ingame.
As campy as it is he seems like he has the potential to be an amazing artist. It’s easy to write off an artist and their work as less valuable when you can’t immediately understand or relate to it, like the way people have tended to view graffiti. The weird room with all of his original prints was super interesting, I hope he explores that more and leans into the surrealist and abstract nature of his “art” lol. Would love to meet him and maybe even take part in the process. Just wish there wasn’t so much waste
I tell ya, every long video Nick makes is always something interesting. The twist of him not playing Dangonranpa, and of his dad producing such a popular musical was crazy. And also his parents letting him do it and being appreciative, even if it’s weird, is such a wholesome family relationship.

The fact that he he's so obsessed with the character that dies first in the game and only appears in the first hours AND HAS NEVER EVEN PLAYED DANGANRONPA (the anime even reduces the characters screentime) makes me kind of impressed. Like whoa, this is another level of dedication. His whole life is basically changed. And I've got to hand it to them: those are some real supportive parents!
At first I thought this was really sad, that someone was spending so much time making all of this. Somehow, throughout this video, I slowly developed this understanding and appreciation that to some level, this is freaking art. It's content, it makes people feel genuine emotions and people react to it. It's UNIQUE. I'm quite amazed by the physical and mental dedication he puts into these projects.
15:29 | This whole section of him cutting the paper and seeing all the scraps scattered on the floor hit me with a feeling of nostalgia(?) You guys can’t even hate him, it’s a really impressive art form AND he’s crazy dedicated to it. He puts his appreciation into ACTUALLY doing something, rather than wasting time constantly replaying her part of the game, and I can’t help but want to be his friend
This isn't art?
@@nicecube2798 technically it counts as art
this guy... i can't help but identify with tobyn. i'm an artist too, and sometimes it feels like i go overboard when i really like something. i can't ever just do something halfway, i have to go all in. seeing tobyn dedicate his life, his whole world, to this craft, is fantastic. it's reassuring to know that there are people who are even more insane than i am in their art lmao
I really appreciate your tone through this. So many others would have taken the opportunity to dunk on him for his dad's wealth, but you navigated that topic really well and pointed to the beauty in it while addressing the absurdity of the whole family situation.
the fact he almost broke his spine on the IRONMOUSE cutout, of all cutouts
Honestly he unironically is the most sane DR fan what he does is only for him and doesn’t hurt anyone and is insanely talented with the creation of the standees
I wish I could do what he does it looks fun
I could see him as the ultimate arts and crafts
@@Xx_Oleander_xX poor Jataro Kemuri
@@KadenzJade6447 I forgot the elementary schoolers were also ultimates lmao
Lol idk about that
@@statesminds I mean if he isn’t harming anyone he’s sane there are far worse fans out there need we be reminded of snow the salt queen
I went from, "OK another weird Nick Robinson topic I'm going to engage and like"to "I actually admire this artist. He's not weird at all, he's just expressing himslef in the purest way possible, as an artist."
Gotta respect the amount of effort Tobyn put into cutouts, not everyone has that type of will & dedication to such peculiar activity
Dude's an artist. An unconventional artist but an artist nonetheless. I aspire to have his drive
@@0uttaS1TE he didn't create anything though, he's dedicated I'll give him that
YOU'RE LITERALLY EVERYWHERE
Right? It’s surprisingly awesome
The Ishimaru’s all across the wall was so funny for some reason😭
Also I wanna steal his Monokuma army
Thank you for making this. I remember seeing videos of his rooms before and how my friends and I were slightly creeped out but that was so closed minded of us and I’m glad to have my narrow biases corrected. He’s an amazing person making art with a dedication that’s so admirable. I honestly hope to see more of what he makes.
don’t be too hard on yourself - i had the exact same expectations you did based on his tiktoks! was totally surprised by what i found when i met him, hahah
I really am so happy after watching this video. Just seeing someone express themselves despite it being cringey and seeing how the parents are ok with it.
Like seeing this genuinely gives me hope that if I spend enough time doing something I love it can only yield good results.
This dudes environment is primed for this sort of thing but it doesn't change the fact that he has done so much. I'm legit inspired.
He turned his home into an escape room.
Not because there are any puzzles involved.
Just because while you are there every bone in your body is telling you to flee.
poor people: how will i eat. where will i get my insulin.
rich people: this is where i store my 80 paper waifus.
Seriously. This was funny as a short, but this long form video is disgraceful
@@almanac520disgraceful? why?
This man can truly inspire confidence. If he can do this and not be cringe, then whatever anime/weeb stuff you’re into isn’t shameful either. Don’t let “cringe culture” ruin what you love y’all.
Cringe is what cowards call people who are confident in themselves and love what they do.
People think they're too cool to be passionate about the things they truely love. Either that or theyre too irony poisoned
but this literally is cringe, anybody who thinks it isn't needs to go touch some grass lmfao
@@AlkonKomm why should people be discouraged from doing something just because some strangers think it’s “cringe”?
@@chewyrocks I am not discouraging anybody from doing anything, dude can do what he wants, I am just saying that spending all of your precious and limited time on this planet placing your commissioned anime waifu cutouts all over your giant mansion and "taking her out for dinner" is the literal textbook definition of cringe, no matter how you spin it or how much the guy himself ironically "embraces the cringe"
The ending of Danganronpa V3 tried warning about this.
Joke aside interesting to see what you have to say about The Ultimate Sayaka Fan.
I can only imagine what his neighbors think or a repairman going inside the house.
Props to Tobyin's for being supportive and very cool his dad wrote the musical Grease.
That's so funny thinking about it, the creation of Grease gave us this anime fan content.
The Grease-to-schizo-anime-cutouts pipeline reminds me of how 9/11 directly caused Fifty Shades of Grey
@@Bighomie39 > 911 caused Fifty Shades of Grey
I must know how.
This guy seems fun, harmless, and kinda cool. The first question I had upon watching him walk through the halls lined with Kiyotakas was “how do we afford a house that we can line with Kiyotakas or have relatives that let us” and boy the answer to that question was UNANTICIPATED.
The giant cutouts are pretty impressive and I gotta know, was Scott made just for you??? And I’m equally obsessed with the Monokuma army.
Edit: my dude, you’re going for the NAME BRAND ink for your tank printers? Amazon has some killer generics that have done great for me working in teaching, you could cut your ink costs effectively in half.
The fact I know more about the Maizono guy than I know anything about Grease says a lot lol
Just figured he got lucky with crypto or something, but that's some cool hidden lore, nice to see the parents being so supportive
Imagine a rober breaking into a house and ending up in a new plain of existence.
out of fear i would leave without stealing anything
It is sad.
@@NikitaNinties Then all art is inherently sad.
@@NikitaNintiesyou are sad. I am sad. Everyone is sad now
Unique doesn't make it good. There'a reason why not all people act like this guy. And that is for a good reason
@@toramaru2490 brother did you listen to the rest of the video? He’s set for life. He can afford to not be societally “good” unlike the rest of us.
15:29 | This whole section of him cutting the paper and seeing all the scraps scattered on the floor hit me with a feeling of nostalgia(?) It reminded me of being a kid and just having all this craft material surrounding me as I plunged into episodes of creative flow. Made me think, like- damn. I should rekindle that chaotic creativity I used to have. :)
You've hit the nail right on the head. I used to craft so many random things as a child
I feel happy for that guy that he is still able to do his hobby. I dont have time for art due to studies and exams.
So this guy has a home that is as big as the town where I live, and he spends all his time to print and cut figures... man the dedication in insane!
The instant I saw the outside of his house, I knew who this was. I'm into Vtubing community, and this guy has kind of made a name for himself among that fandom for making truly GIGANTIC paper/cardboard cutouts of Vtubers (my first exposure to him was the 30-ft Calliope Mori he set up outside his garage); many of said Vtubers have even acknowledged them, and had pretty much the same reaction everyone has: shock, befuddlement, and then admiration. This really is just this guy's "thing"; man simply likes making paper cutouts. And, strangely specific as it may seem, it obviously takes a lot of work and dedication, and I really admire him for it.
how does he make so much money to afford the house?
@@kirarakurokawa8747 They talked about it from 30:05 to 32:30.
Basically his father is Jim Jacobs, writer of the musical Grease, along with Warren Casey. The musical later became a film in 1978, so that kinda explains the reason.
i want more nepo babies like this please. this guy's actions seem totally unhinged at first, but honestly he's not harming anyone so who cares! long live the 30ft anime waifus
I'm only 8 minutes in but I have to know...how the hell can he afford this? That house is huge, all these empty rooms just for cutouts lol
edit: holy shit
:)
Rich parents, thats how
Daddy's money... MBN
He could have done so much good with that money but no he made his house into a shrine for his waifu.
who cares if it's his parents money, you know you'd kill to be in his situation and be able to do whatever you want
Tobyn is my new favorite installation artist. Those rooms full of identical stand-ups are awesome!
