Why do people give a thumbs down. It’s clear you put a lot of time into this..... oh stupid internet. Sounds are great
Thanks a lot. The irony is that a thumbs-down is as equally valuable to a YT channel as a thumbs-up... It's activity and activity helps the videos get higher in search lists
And the results are excellent. Some people stupid is are.
exquisite black note playing. 10/10
Ha! I wasn't very confident about those mini keys so stuck to playing the ones spaced furthest apart ;)
if you accidentally step on a white key a fairy will die
I was thinking the same thing, exactly like I do when I play my little Yamaha 😂
@@TimShoebridge the secret to piano and synth is that black keys make you an instant virtuoso
nothing wrong with simplicity.
Excellent ! The “Pluck 6” patch using your Pluck2 oscillator lent itself to create the closest acoustic piano I’ve ever concocted on a synth! Thank you for a new place to go!
A very convincing muted harpsichord...and a koto right at the end. Nice work, Tim!
kyoto?
ofc had to pick it up!
It's bloody ridiculously good
Wow this is amazing
Love pluck 7
Steve hillage,gong sound.
Tim it's a huge winner 🏆
Just had to leave a quick message to say thank you for the great oscillators!
Just got pluck2 and string and wow! It’s like a new synth!
Thanks Tim, keep up the excellent work!
This is absolutely 100% going to be my first synth
Same!
Idk if you got it or not, but I fucking love it as my first synth.
8:05 mark annnnnd im sold.
can you explain why ? I mean serum got the same sound as this with the same depth .. i mean this demo made me actually the opposite than buying this.
@@mrjohnmayer4091 to each is own of course but to me it just sounds great. Seeing/hearing tht this is what can be done with the custom osc for the XD is awesome tech. As far as the Serum comparison is concerned I would say for me it's about the hardware, the interface and tactile feedback one gets. Serum is software and has it's own set of strengths and weakness but it is stuck in the box. So yeah I just find this synth to sound great and be super flexible with its hybrid analog/digital framework and at a great price point to boot.
Very very impressive Tim. Lovely plucked strings sounds. I look forward to using these on my Prologue.
FANTASTIC PROGRAMMING
Tim, thanks for this very impressive 'massaging' of a Korg preset to create delightfully evocative synthesised sounds. I was transported at the end of this journey to a small Japanese village. You nailed the distinct ambient timbre of a Koto. It was truely heart warming and relaxing.
That first preset feels like acid/funk fusion. Great result, hope to see these get used in a tune sometime.
Hi Tim,
just came across this old video and the pluck oscillator. Really good interesting sounds you created in your presets. Love it. So now I will also have a look at your other oscillators as well. Being one day ahead of the famous Black Friday I wondered if you would offer something like you did one or two years ago. Would be interesting. Thanks again for these phantastic sounds from Germany
Tim, you’re the man. Keeping pushing forward!
Very cool! thanks for sharing
Nice. Has an FM vibe
This is fantastic, thank you for your work
Love your videos all great man
Real pleasant
Thx Tim, now I want this thing even more. G.A.S. in full effect 😱😲😂😂😂!!!
sounds lovely and a very useful oscillator type methinks. First port of call if I can ever afford an XD....
I really like plucks 2, 4, 6, & 7.
Nicely done 😀👍
Thank you for releasing Pluck v2!
I installed it immediately.
However, the oriental feeling of the old Pluck preset No. 8 has decreased.
Oh! Just install both and it's OK!
Up to 16 User Oscillators can be installed at the same time.
Great! (Don't forget to reselect a Pluck or Pluck2 Oscillator in our program.)
I'm looking forward to A next new Tim Oscillator!
Sounds great, has a very "guitar/kyoto" sound. 👍
What you did is awesome
thanks for making those so reasonable on your site there, definetly worth the asking price
Sounds very nice!
Pluck 3 sequence in harmonised Eb minor gets my vote!
This sounds amazing!!!
XD
Awesome work! I'm really hoping korg release a Prologue XD next, I'm on the verge of buying one, but just feel they will drop the xD version a month later...
Nice one Tim
Lovely sounds!
Дима ты многого добился сам !!!!!!!!!!ТЫ большой молодец!!!СПАСИБО ТЕБЕ ЛАЙК!!!
Makes me wanna buy an xD now !!!!!!
We need to find a way to bottle up these sounds so I can drink them
Wow cool
Very nice. The basic sound has a Japanese vibe. Like how the presets are all so unique. The sequence with preset Pluck 7 is amazing... @ 14:19
Quite a profound upgrade for the XD. This won't sit on my chip unused.
Sold!! Ordering an XD tomorrow.
just ordered one
Around the 8:40 mark it kind of reminds me of the main theme song to Creepshow 2!
Totally. Know exactly what you mean
Excellent !
Very very nice
Very nice
Wow great work Tim. I really need the XD in my life. Is it difficult to design oscillators for it? Do you need to code?
Thanks a lot. Yes you need to be able to program in C, the SDK is low level and documentation is lacking. But it's a fascinating development area to get into if you are interested in coding and don't mind some maths...
Tim Shoebridge great, thanks for the info. I would like to learn C code anyway so maybe this will be my excuse.
Honnestly Tim, do you consider the minilogue as a must have, compared to let say the nymphes, the hydrasynth or the mopho4?
Four months ago I made a user oscillator that looks very similar, and I made it open source and free: github.com/len/korg-prologue/tree/master/src/pluck
It's compiled for the Prologue but there's no difference, should work on Minilogue XD too, the multiengines are identical.
Wish I could get this for my monologue
Great job on the pluck oscillator, is it based on the Karplus-Strong string synthesis method that uses a short burst of noise into a chromatic delay with feedback? If it is, this means every time you play a note the waveform should sound slightly different, but in your demo, you never really play the same note more than once, as to show it is indeed randomly varying.
Thanks a lot. There is definitely an element of randomness to how the tones are initially generated before they evolve.
it sounds exactly like the classic karplus-strong at first but seems like he made the input waveform changable from noise to saw as a parameter input as well, might also be some other stuff going on. very cool, sounds great.
Awesome, I've always wondered what the pluck method of synthesis would sound like played polyphonically and now to have it in a gig-able synth is amazing!
XD?!?!?! i demand a review 😄❤
It's definitely in progress. But I will be calling it "initial thoughts" rather than a review ;)
Tim Shoebridge love you synth videos
It's like the whole video was passed through a 20somethings instagram filter.
CubeRepublic That’s because I’m still a 20something inside ;)
What an amazing user oscillator :o. If I got this right, I can still add to this two VCO's for even bigger sound?
Yes, absolutely :)
@@TimShoebridge Great thanks :). I saw that on presets from ONE and TWO both VCO's are open, so just wanted to check.
I need it
What the pluck? I got way to many oscillators already
Hi, what is the best synth to learn synthesis? Thanks
Do you mind if I ask, I may have missed it, what's the polyphony for Pluck/Pluck 2? Thanks in advance
Hi, the polyphony is determined by the synth you are using. So, 4 voices for a Minilogue XD and either 8 or 16 voices for a Prologue.
Do you think Korg will release an 8 voice version of this?
Unfortunately I have no insight into what Korg is planning, but they did recently release a desktop version of the XD which would give you 8 voices if poly-chained to an XD keyboard. To be honest I would expect Korg to concentrate on upgrading the Prologue next, in some respects the XD now matches the Prologue and even betters it.....
do you guys think that it would be possible to make something sounding similiar to grand piano on this synth?
Short answer is no. You could achieve sounds that are piano-like but to recreate a grand piano really needs samples and the architecture of the MXD is too limiting in terms of the memory for that. I have heard some excellent piano VST's that don't use samples but they have complex algorithms that must have taken a very long time to perfect...
@@TimShoebridge Thanks for reply. Yeah, I ment something piano-ish. Heard kinda nice piano patch on old microkorg somewhere. And afaik FM synths are able to produce good piano like sounds, but i understand this is different structure. We`ll just have to wait and hear what people are gonna do :)
do prefer the korg xd over the deepmind 6?
Ah very good question. I'm actually working on an XD review video currently and that is a question I hope to answer. Bottom line is I think they both have their place, DM is deeper, better for sound design and a better performance instrument, XD is quite basic but feels much more immediate and rewarding to pick up and start playing around with...
@@TimShoebridge Ok thanks
Superb. I guess I can use these with Prologue too. Correct?
Hi. I answered below. Unfortunately the file I generated is MXD only. I'm investigating options re. Prologue. Will get back to you...
I will buy this immediately if you do make a Prologue build :-)
@@Stakkeroid I have got a Prologue version working now. See here for details: ua-cam.com/video/hwnv9OzFNeM/v-deo.html
Would this work on the Prologue as well?
michael moncur following
Hi. The short answer is no, the file I have generated is for the MXD only, I would not recommend loading it onto a Prologue though I doubt the librarian software will let you.
That said, I can generate a version for Prologue. But I don't have a Prologue to test it on and that's a very important step. Loading badly behaved software onto a synth can be very damaging. Let me get back to you on this........
Tim Shoebridge thanx for yr reply. Let me know.
@@akissparaskevopoulos Hi again, I am borrowing a Prologue, will hopefully get it this weekend, so if all goes well I should have a version of "Pluck for Prologue" next week.
I coded the same thing 4 months ago for the Prologue, it even has the same name, when I saw this video I thought he was demoing my oscillator. You can get it for free: github.com/len/korg-prologue/tree/master/src/pluck
can this be used in a prologue as well??
Eric Roulston Hi. No it is specific to the XD but I hope to have a Prologue version next week. Will post another YT video once it is ready.
I have got a Prologue version working now. See here for details: ua-cam.com/video/hwnv9OzFNeM/v-deo.html
What mic are you using?
It's the Shure WH20 headset, but I do have a Zoom H6 picking up ambient sound too.
@@TimShoebridge Thanks... didnt know about that headset. Sounds good.
XD XD XD :P
Me no like.
Can't wait to try this on the Prologue! Sounds great.

2:43 Gives me clavinet vibes, perfect for funk.
The Oscillator. Sounds like a villain Batman should be fighting. Great video, my XD arrives in December.
I don't understand the sequencer working, why as much differences between what's playing and what's registering ? Thanks for your video, it's a good capacity overview of this incredible machine.
This is my favorite keyboard! 😎
Very nice! Has this oriental string feel almost like a kodo perhaps? Idk but you really did the XD a solid by showing what it can do :D
Sounds fantastic Tim, great work. Really loving the tones from the Minilogue XD. Enjoyed the little arp jam at 9:33 especially. Keep it up!
Tim do the presets work with Prologue as well... or just the Oscillator? Brilliant work thanks!
Thanks Mark. When I developed Pluck I had access to a Prologue so have provided presets for that synth too. However that's not the case with the newer oscillators, they only have MXD presets unfortunately.
Sounds identical to the pluck opcode from csound, very cool! Did you use karplus strong algorithms for it?
nice
Really nice sound.
Sounds great. nice one!
Almoat sound like the str-1 sound engine on the korg kronos. Sounds awesome. Great job
That sounds awesome! Just ordered my XD! Thanks!
With Eurorack modules such as Rings and Plaits, they can play 3 or 4 notes with overlapping releases, despite only being able to play one note at a time. Is this osc capable of overlapping releases in Unison mode, or does it depend on the Minilogue XD's polyphony for that?
Hi, sorry for the delay in replying, have been away. There are limitations with the user oscillator architecture so you are tied to the XD's own polyphony limits. But the XD does have chord mode, the ARP, sequencer and delay effects to help create complexity to the sounds...
@@TimShoebridge Thanks Tim. I was wondering about this in terms of how it would work on the Nu:Tekt synth, since it's monophonic. I guess the Nu:Tekt won't be capable of any overlapping releases then, which makes it somewhat less useful than I had hoped. I suppose it just means that I should save up for an XD then!
Hi Tim. What oscillator do you recommend for piano and keyboard sounds?
Hi Francisco, Piano sounds are generally hard to do without complex digital algorithms (physical modelling) and samples. The pluck oscillator can get you kind of close to a piano sound but it will never be the same as a sampled piano. Check out the EP preset pack I did for my pluck oscillator for some examples: www.soundmangling.com/2019/08/11/ep-presets-for-minilogue-xd/
Also, there are a couple of digital waveforms in my DigitalWaveform (DW) oscillator that are a great starting point for both electric piano and acoustic piano patches. They get you closer to the sound of a piano than Pluck. Here's a link to the DW oscillator, the second video on that page actually includes examples of creating some piano-like presets www.soundmangling.com/2019/08/11/ep-presets-for-minilogue-xd/
Thank you very much Tim! Excellent all your work, a hug from Buenos Aires!
Awesome! Thanks!
Sounds great. I notice that the length of the sound increases with lower frequencies, similar to a digital sample, though the sound quality does not seem to deteriorate. Is there an explanation for this?
Hi. From a technical point of view, what determines the pitch is the length of the waveform that the oscillator is generating. That waveform is being constantly modified as the sound is played to simulate the change in waveform that a plucked instrument generates as it decays. The shorter the waveform's length, the faster that modification takes to complete and so achieve a full decay effect. The idea is that this naturally reproduces what a real plucked string does: a high E on a guitar resonates for a lot less time than a low E and the same is true for the length of time a low piano key can resonate with the sustain pedal down compared to the higher registers....
@@TimShoebridge I see, cheers.
this is nuts
Dope!
cool demos !! ...dsi evolver or minilogue ?
Bruno Burger Thanks very much. I’d say the XD for its immediacy and fun factor but the Evolver for its depth and sonic capability.
Tim Shoebridge ok thanks.. i had the evolver 5 years ago, sold it.. i make industrial techno , ambiant and experimental music.. i use mostly software now for sound design as i process the sounds heavily.. but it’s nice to have a few bits of analog/hybrid synths like that.
Tim Shoebridge i also loved very much the Waldorf microwaves and nordleads .. replaced them with Nave and Discovery pro
@@TimShoebridge but taking appart the modulations possibilities of the evolver, i think the minilogue can produce similar sounds with a good distortion unit and the delay..isn't?
Very nice. How difficult was the programming? do you need to know about dsp maths? Your take on the XD in general would be good if you have time in the future.
Thanks a lot. The programming is in C, a library of low level helper functions is provided but documentation is almost non-existent so you really need to know some of the maths concepts behind it. Ultimately everything is a stream of numbers which you manipulate one way or another. There's quite a lot of resources on the internet to help you (not specific to the Korg synths) but yes maths plays a big part.
@@TimShoebridge You're the dude, dude!
Very nice oscillator for the NTS-1 ... thank you
I'm planning to get a Monologue XD, so time to sub. Thanks for making these!
