- Navigational Basics and Intro to Aeronautical Charts
This video is intended for teachers or anyone who wants to learn about aeronautical chart basics! Follow along as Hetty Carlson points out key features on the Denver / Colorado Springs Terminal Area Chart and what to look for if you're planning your own flight.
Where to find more aeronautical charts:
FAA - www.faa.gov/air_traffic/fligh...
VFRMAP - vfrmap.com
SkyVector - skyvector.com
Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum:

This was really cool and informative, please do more!
the best video that I can find in YT
Awesome video. Both informative and inspirational. I hope there will be more. Hetty's a fantastic teacher!
Hey, just want to say that this has been informative and really well delivered. You're a great teacher, keep it up!
Magnetic North is not due to an ore deposit, it is due to the molten core of the earth generating a magnetic field.
You are correct! The ever changing location of the isogonic lines are due to the fluctuating molten iron ore movement in the earth's mantle. Thank you for your input!
I think she meant locally as in if you were on the ground for some reason
Also, and correct me as needed, but magnetic North is constantly moving away from Canada and toward Russia. As such, charts are updated regularly to reflect the change in variation/declination and sometimes even runway headings are changed to reflect to the new direction magnetic North dictates they head.
@@jdvaillancourt Yes! Magnetic north is constantly changing which is why charts are reissued twice per year to reflect the magnetic variation. In fact, up until the mid-1980's Centennial Airport's north/south runway headings were 16/34. They are now 17/35. Thank you for your input, Josh!
There's different levels of correctness for different levels of need, and a pilot doesn't need much about the source of the magnetic north, only a rough idea of what it is.
Just like you instinctively learn how to steer a car without necessarily knowing what really turns the wheels beyond your steering wheel.
The breakdown of the runway id was awesome.
HETTY, GREAT JOB...KEEP TEACHING!
Great presentation. Thanks
Very informative, thanks ❤
Thank you very much!
GENIAL INFORMACION
Good content
Thank you
could listen to her for hours
Are u still listening? Lol
good video. Unfortunately I can not find the next one mentioned................... a link would have been helpful. Did I miss that?
Very cool! :-)
I hope you will be at Sun &Fun 2022 hope you will be there
Can you do a behind the wings to a g91 r3 or r4
HOLY SHIT WHAT?? An ore deposit around the artic circle? The general scientific consensus is the earth has a molten iron core that is generating a magnetic field around the earth which compasses align with.
I don't know about the US, but here in the UK we use 3 norths, those being Magnetic, True and Grid.
K is for the continental United states. P is used for Alaska and Hawaii
Correct, K is for the contiguous United States.
at 25 seconds the animation and voice are incorrect for longitude and latitude.
I was just about to make this comment. It can be very confusing for someone first learning.
@0:37 As your finger went along you said it BACKWARDS. Then the globe diagram shows the true Longitude is long way along the Equator and Latitude is north and south. I am just a student, but
What happened to Stapleton and what happened to Jeffco airports? They were very heavily developed at the cost of $Billions of tax dollars?
She is beautiful can’t get my eyes off her
