- A review of BASIC sectional symbology and rules. Nothing too detailed or difficult, we'll save that for another day and another video! Get ready for your next BFR, or simply knock off the rust from not flying for a while.
Just add two zeros to everything in aviation. That certainly applies to the costs associated with all things aviation
Great tip, and you aint kidding! Want to make a million dollars in aviation? Start with 2 million.
Ain’t that the truth!
Lmaoo, so true 🥲
@@captainchris0211 I would request your knowledge/learning services though can't afford to pay you please. For the ppl certificate I hope to go for it in future but really wishes and dreams to attain my ppl one day and see flying my self.

You explained this better than an online course I purchased for $$
Most in-depth tutorial so far, thanks for uploading.
Glad you liked it and thanks for the feedback!
Thanks Chris. After a 30 year pause I'm planning to get back into the cockpit. So much has changed since I last flew. Thanks for the refresher.
Thanks you for the break down! Just getting started into flying and was very lost on the map reading. Understand a lot better now.
Glad it helped and good luck!
I watch a lot of these how to read maps. This was the simplest one ever. Thanks for making the video I understood a lot more the way you explain it. Repetition is the best teacher. I wish you would have just kept going over and over and over stuff but thank you so much!
helpful.....basic but just right for me.
Great presentation.
Thanks!
This was great, Thank you. Please make some more in depth videos.
Thanks Kevin! I'm adding some new videos on what a DPE or CFI might ask on a hypothetical cross country flight. Stay tuned!
Good video for my BFR. Clear and concise. Thanks.
You're welcome!
Fantastic video. Your explanation of the sectional is on point.
Thank you, this has been very helpful. More like this please.
That is such a great explanation Captain, thank you so much 👏
Thank you, Great refresher.
The best I've seen yet and well spoken.
Thank you sir!
YES...VERY BASIC IS GOOD AND GREATLY NEEDED...AND YOUR SPEED IS JUST RIGHT TOO! YOU ARE A GOOD TEACHER...NOW GET EVEN BETTER! MOST CIF'S AND GROUND SCHOOLS JUST SHOW A CHART AND TALK WITH NO PEN OR POINTER TO SHOW WHERE THEY ARE OR WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT AND THEY LEAVE OUT THE DETAILS B/C THEY KNOW IF THEY REALLY TEACH THESE SUBJECTS SO THAT THOSE IN GROUND SCHOOL REALLY LEARN IT THAT THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO REAP HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS FROM THE PP STUDENTS IN THEIR GROUND SCHOOLS THAT THEY ONLY GAVE AN OVER VIEW AND REALLY TAUGHT THEM NOTHING OF THE HOW TO'S AND THEY WILL NEED THESE SKILLS IF THEY WANT TO PASS THEIR CHECK RIDE ...SO, YOU DID A GREAT JOB...WE JUST NEED TO KNOW HOW TO USE THE PLOTTER NOW... SO MANY NEED THE VERY BASIC TEACHINGS OF AVIATION NAVIGATION AND MATH CALCULATIONS USING THE STEP BY STEP METHOD TO GET THE CORRECT ANSWER AND TO LEARN THE SKILLS OF HOW TO DO IT! PLEASE DO MORE VIDEOS ON USING THE PLOTTER AND THE CHARTS AND IF YOU CAN USE THE CX-3 PLEASE SHOW US HOW DO ALL THE FLIGHT PLANNING WITH IT AND THE MATH IN A VERY BASIC WAY...ALSO WEIGHTS AND BALANCE, CG, VOR, ALTIMETER, AND IF YOU CAN HELP WITH AIR SPACE THAT WOULD BE GREAT TOO...THANK YOU SO MUCH Capt. Chris Johnston FOR YOUR HELP! YOU ARE AMAZING!
How about not all caps? Very hard to read.
Chris..thanks for this video. I understand you say basic, but to us beginners, you broke this down and took your time explaining things. This was very helpful!! I’m new to your channel and hoping you have more videos like this.
Thanks!!
Thanks for the comment! I'm planning on more like this, as it's been pretty popular. Appreciate the feedback!
Great video to watch just before my Part 107 test today!
Glad it helped!
Thanks for going over that VFR chart so meticulously keep up the good work!
Thanks David!
Thank you and Happy Flying!
Hey, dropping a comment to help the visibility of this great video!
If you're flying into Sacramento, this secrional tour shows how busy the region can get. Perfect video!

Thank you for the support!
Great presentation. Thanks
Great video. Very informative. Thank you
Thanks for watching and the kind words!
This is the most straightforward explanation of a vfr chart I've seen. Not trying to be funny or cute...just the facts. Thanks!
Nice video very well explained Good job
Good instructional video. 👍🏻 I subbed.
Thanks... for a person getting started in flying PPG, and of course there is NO radio's on these, this lesson is extremely important.
It's the,,, where I can fly and these charts that scare the hell out of me.
We, well I, expect to be flying upto 1k maybe a tad more, but everything from ground upto that.
Oh, at 30mph... not getting run over by one of meatgrinder props, is pretty important...
It's nuts up there now, and now with all these drones, and more coming commercially, we have to really define or try to figure all this out...
Our engine's are right by our heads, so don't even think we can hear you coming!!!. No mirrors either... but we don't fly in the dark... twilight and sunrise... 4 hours each side of that.. that's our peak hours.
All the info you can put out there on this chart stuff,
*** IS VERY HELPFUL**
THANKS
Practical video. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
your the first to explain things a little more clearly. still alot to learn lol but it defiantly helps
Thanks, and good luck with your studies!
Thanks... Very helpful.
I fly, low&slow, (a powered parachute), and we have NO radios or instruments, but I wanted to understand these charts...
They I can buy and it sure is confusing to say the least...
Now I'm down FLA. and we have a bunch of small airports, a bunch! Our sea level is pretty much nothing.. The I-70 overpass is about our highest spot!! But all these circles is what confuses me to start with...
At 30mph, I'd like not to get hit!!! Hope you guys see us.. We normally don't go over 4k ft, seldom that high. But,,, ground to 2k, yeah, we're all over that airspace.
Thanks for the chart info..
Thanks ! As for foreign it is not easy for me for understanding. Your video helps
Thanks you from France , it’s more complicated than my place !!!
Glad you enjoyed it! More videos coming...
Nice video, It would have been great to go into Depth with that Class E airport within the Class C airspace that went down to the surface as this is where I'm still getting a bit confused. Great info regardless!
This is exactly what I needed
Flag over the city of Davis is a reporting station. Which the tower expects you to know. When you reach this point you would report over Davis inbound for landing.
Great help! Thanks!!!
You're welcome!
"International Intergalactic Spaceport" 😂
Can you do more videos on sectional I learned a lot from this video that no one has been able to explain like you did.
Sure will!
Used to fly in a T-37 out of Mather AFB. Fun times. Remember ROZZY intersection.
thank you!
Meet missile, pretty good. I like it!😆
Thank uuu!!!
Meat missles. Lmao. Good one. Thanks for this. Very helpful. I learned a lot. Just subscribed. Interested in .ore thanks.
Thanks Dale!
Great Video. When i`ve seen the Skyvector VFR Map for the first time, i was like "good God" so many informations . I am curious about the VFR Approach procedure into lets say Class D Airport. In Germany we got that so called "mandatory reporting points" that we have to go for and report 10 Minutes before, for entering Charlie. The ATC will give us a clearance for Charlie and we are cleared to join the Pattern for landing. How does it work in the US , i guess it`s kinda like you have to report like 15 miles away from the Airport that you are inbound for landing and ATC is vectoring you to let`s say left base on 27R. Would like to know how it`s gonna work .
Thnx Chris..hope to knock out my PPL, by 11/23..
Good refresher Thank You now how a cross country flight
Thank you
Very welcome, and thanks for watching!
Great job explaining. I live in Southern CA - LA area. Our VFR sectional chart is 95% yellow. With all kinds of class C and Bravo areas. Could you do some more detail explanation on our area?
Used to work out of sac metro...what a pain in the ass now...glad I'm out of it now
that what I want thank you
thanks mister, when u say b or d can u change up to say bravo or delta?
Nicely done. A video on restricted airspace would be good.
Great suggestion!
Enjoyed it and learned from it; well done. One request. I had difficulty differentiating the air space classes when you were saying "C" , "D" & "E", charlie, delta & echo would have taken away the confusion. Good explanations in more detail than I've seen so far. Thanks
Great point! I'll be more careful in the future, and know how frustrating not being able to hear what the video is saying. Thanks for the comment and view!
Thank you Chris, such a detailed information. I have a question here. How do you check the runway length from one airport to the other airport? Thank you.
The easiest way (if you use Foreflight) is to look at the airport information page. Otherwise, the sectional MAY show the longest runway by adding two zero's. KMHR shows 113, so the longest runway is 11,300'. KSAC? 5,500'.
What dos the flag at Davis mean?
Great video BTW!
subscribed
b c and d all sound alike on the audio, might want to say bravo, charlie, delta.
The blue lines with a direction and arrow on it are called what?
can you do some more Vedic like this?
I am just getting started and wondered what is a good app to download on my phone for the maps?
You can use skyvector.com if you have cell service, otherwise I think foreflight.com might be your best bet.
3:35 how do you know which way 4R and 22R are facing? Is that info on another legend?
In case you actually skipped a few steps to get to this video, runway numbers are always marked according to compass heading. So if you're lined up with a runway and flying a 270 heading with no wind then the runway numbers on the landing end should say 27. I hope that makes sense, good luck.
9:00 The marks show there's fuel available, but is there a way to know what type of fuel?
should mention the blue Big 2 little 2 numbers and what it represents
Am not à pilot but I love aviation it's only that can't afford cash to persue PPL but I hope one day I will.learning in advance. Jackson from kenya.
Land at CHP and "you'll be met with guns I'm sure". I'm laughing out loud.
How ID areas ultralight Aircraft can not fly?
Very handy for a brush up !
Thanks!
Chris, good video and info. Just a suggestion when you are explaining class Eeeeee, Deeeee, Ceeee. It was a bit hard to decipher what you were saying.. it would be better if you said class ECHO, DELTA AND CHARLIE..but good job on your instruction ..Bob CFI at Hayward PFC..Happy New Year..
Good point, thanks!
Thanks for the video. I suspect that you MAY have misspoke though. At or around 4:45, you mentioned that the Dashed blue lines indicate Class E Airspace to the surface. But then at 7:33 with the Dashed magenta line, you call that Class E to the surface. All this is confusing, so some clarification would be appreciated. I THINK i have it right based on other research I've done...but this is all confusing, hence why there are 1,000 people with videos talking about it lol.
Oops, if I misspoke I'm sorry! Class D to the surface is a dashed blue line, and Class E to the surface is a dashed magenta line. Thanks for the catch!
@@captainchris0211 Thanks for the clarification and thanks for dropping the knowledge 🤙
What are the large magenta numbers? The one on the left is slightly larger than the other. In your sectional it's a 22
Those are called Maximum Elevation Figures. It's the altitude of the highest object in that square box.
👍🏻
Thanks for the thumbs up!
BRAc was about Weakening America.
Exclusively.
I notice that Sacramento Exec and Sacramento International airspaces overlap from 1600 feet to 2500 feet. How does that work? Who do you call if you were flying through that sliver of airspace??? I know what I would do, but the FAA has regulations for absolutely everything so there must be something in writing.
how do I tell wind direction on the sectional?
Throw it up into the air and note the direction where it comes down.
@@braininavatnow9197 in the video you were talking about the approach pattern and wind direction. Didn't realized you had to throw the thing up in the air first to know how to approach the airport
@@paolosanguankeo9567 there's nothing on a sectional chart that shows current wind...(okay I know some of you were going to say what about the reporting point flags😁🤔)... Really I don't understand your question....sectional won't tell you the wind direction or what time it is or the temperature or how much money you just spent shooting those 3 night full stop landings.
There is a magenta flag in Davis. A VFR waypoint?
They use these at Oshkosh
Yep, you got it! It's a VFR checkpoint, an easily identifiable feature from the air.
Did I miss the meaning of the largest numbers on the map? I figure it's an altitude... but for what?
I think you're referring to the Maximum Elevation Figure number....a large blue number with a smaller number next to it, maybe?
Each grid/box has an MEF, which gives a heads up as to the tallest/highest obstacle in that box. To note, there is NO margin for error with an MEF...if it says "26: (2,600' MSL) then if you are at 2,601 you'll clear the obstacle (terrain, tower, building, etc..) by ONE FOOT. It's a great number to keep in mind flying around, in the event of system failure.
whats the pennant at davis
It denotes Davis as a VFR reporting point, used by ATC to have pilots report their position if needed.
Some of us are very new to charts. It would be helpful to keep repeating things instead of saying you guys know this already. Other than that I loved this video, thanks!
Replay the video....duh.
@@braininavatnow9197 oh ok….problem solved ass wipe……
Flag NE of Davis??
Meat missile, LOL!
Do you have an email?
This chart is representative of the USA Gov. Layers upon layers of rules, regs, laws and codes covering the same thing. The USA Gov could screw up a train wreck.
That would be the NTSB's job.
Pardon me, but I think you need to meet some requirements, ie 2way radio, ads-b, xponder to overfly class C.
Nice explanations but assuming we know all that is bizzare. You end up skipping stuff I don't know and apperently I need to know all that to fly a drone.
Meat missiles......😅
“Meat middle” lMAO!
You didn't go over what the flag means
Mather doesn’t have tic marks. No fuel available,
