  • Hey, trying something new here. Im uploading the raw unedited version of the first time I played with CHOMPI so that you can get an idea of how quickly this thing can be learned as well as some of the things I had difficulty with (like automatically entering overdub mode when recording into the loop buffer for the first time). I plan on uploading smaller videos showcasing what I did with it as well, but thought there was value in the longform, first play. Follow me on twitch for live notifications at / aarongoldberg

    Very inspiring video! I’ve been playing all sorts of instruments my whole life, but bought a Chompi as my first sampler. I found a lot of inspiration seeing how you used yours in this video, thanks! If you make more Chompi content I’ll be watching :)

      I’m so glad that this video was able to inspire ways of using the chompi! And I’m even more glad that you have entered the sampling world after years of playing! Sampling is a truly amazing tool and I think the chompi team made a wonderful intro to sampling instrument. With future firmware updates, this things capabilities and strengths will only grow!

    hello man, i amhalfway through and loving your stream! just i didn't really get if the chompi can record sounds that you make on the spot and let you use it as asample, that would be cool. can it do that?

      Oh yes chompi can absolutely record samples on the fly! It’s one of the main functions! I think I mainly use the pre loaded samples in this, though I do attempt to chop some songs up on it to some success haha

      @@gabrielemarcelli4530 $600 is definitely a high price for such a limited instrument. I think that price is more likely a product of this being their first instrument and it being expensive to get off the ground as a new company. They are also utilizing the Daisy platform witch will allow for alternate firmwares so this device can become something completely new, and it’s build in fx, if tweaked right in the code would be a surprisingly powerful FX unit. I think $600 for where it is right now is a lot, but I’m happy to be an early adopter for a new company in hopes they continue to improve the instrument and improve as a company. I’m in their discord actively along with many others offering input on how to improve the current firmware, along with giving ideas for alternate firmware and the team is very responsive!

    Man how do you get the drum loop samples into a perfect loop on the looper? Every time i try it sounds jittery towards the end, like i missed the mark or something

    • @AaronGoldbergMusic
      @AaronGoldbergMusic  4 місяці тому +2

      Yo! If you hold the CHOMPI key, it is the shift function. Hold shift, and then hit the green lit key on the right hand side (It’s in between a red and blue lit key). That is the copy function. So hold chompi, hit the green key. Then releasing chompi you can now send that loop to any other key. In this case we want to send it to the loop buffer, so hit the blue play key. Then hit chompi to save. Now you have your drum loop perfectly in the looper.

      its such a great little trick. Im hoping that in future firmware updates they allow the ability to copy the loop into the buffer more than once. For example, loading a drum loop in twice so the phrase length is longer@@AnsonPavlov

    At this price point, it is more about addressing what the Chompi lacks. Cause it lacks a lot of useful things. And it is fairly limited for that horrendous price.
    Not even a screen, MIDI capabilities or synth engine…as far as I’m concerned, this thing is a miss. An absolute miss.
    Heck. Get an iPad and GarageBand got you covered way past that overpriced toy!

    • @AaronGoldbergMusic
      @AaronGoldbergMusic  4 місяці тому +3

      That’s fair! For me it’s more than worth it to have a standalone device like this. (One that doesn’t bombard me with other notifications, or have a screen)
      Some of the things you don’t like about it, are selling points for me. Again, what people are willing to spend money on differs from person to person and it’s totally fair to think this is not worth it. There is also an active community on discord working with the chompi team to make new firmwares and updates to the current firmware! If this video helped you decide you don’t want it, then I’m glad it helped clarify that for you.

    • @Studio_4to1
      @Studio_4to1 4 місяці тому

      @@AaronGoldbergMusic thanks for the amazingly comprehensive answer. Kudos for being that patient!
      I hear a lot about the Discord community, the way the team tries its best. And I can totally get behind the philosophy of the device. Heck, I own the pricey DatoDUO that won’t ever get no firmware.
      But there are quirks and dead-ends with the Chompi. The team don’t oversell it, which is a bit of a bummer if it’s that powerful. And the price tag is…well…it’s pricey. I own the op1 Field, which is way more pricey than that. But on a per-function basis, the op1f is still more bang for your buck.
      I’m actually glad the Chompi got made. It’s a great tool for kids. But again. At this price point, it is not fairly priced.
      They spent money on sourcing faceplates when loads of people asked for MIDI implementation, they advertised inclusion when many people (me included) wanted a fair price to purchase units and use them in schools.
      It’s a miss.
      A great tool, but a miss.
      I do hope they pick up the ball they dropped and try to make right by the product.
      They probably need to communicate more, advertise the future firmwares more……and probably need to be more on point about their forecasts - they just missed the Xmas window, which would have make for more income and, incidentally, more development.
      I’m glad to see people having a blast since the Chompi is, for now, quite an unique tool in the market.
      But it’s now just a matter of months before the next best thing just wipes it out because of poor development and poorly skilled team - which, again, is probably great…but a bit too much for many pros.
      Thanks for the amazing reply. You most definitely earned my sub just for being that cool and humanely positive! Cheers.
      And happy new year!

    • @AaronGoldbergMusic
      @AaronGoldbergMusic  4 місяці тому +1

      @@Studio_4to1 I definitely hear you and can agree with a lot of your points myself. I hope that after this initial run, they are able to not only improve the product, but hopefully even sell it for less. This is an early adopter price, I know I was paying for a possible flop. Which for me, it’s not a flop, but I can see how it missed the mark in a lot of ways for you. I wonder if they can even do special pricing for music schools if they are successful enough at this price point. That would be awesome to get this into more kids hands. But honestly, there will probably be a cheaper alternative for kids to learn on before they get to that point of being able to offer special pricing for schools. As you already said, iPads exist and extremely powerful free music apps exist. I’m also not a marketing major nor a product development specialist, so all of that is speculation. I don’t know what’s realistic, nor what the chompi team wants to do. But I’m glad I have it, and I appreciate the conversation around the topic, which will always only bring positive change. Thank you for subscribing. Cheers and Happy New Year to you!

      @@AaronGoldbergMusic So am I. I have more hardware synths than I can count to prove it, and I know, as I'm sure you do, that you can buy something with WAY more bang for the $600 ludicrous price. I mean, seriously $600. For example you could get a Deepmind for less than that. Compare the ability, spec and functionality and tell me that the toy Chompi is good value at $600!

      @@-Deena. I can see where your hang up is for this device. I don’t think that every piece of gear has to be the most bang for its buck. If that is the most important thing thing by all means I understand and agree there are much more capable devices for less money. Also, I don’t really care whether people like it or not because I bought it for myself. I am sharing this stuff so anyone else who got one or is thinking about it can see it in use. I have no stake in whether or not chompi succeeds. Though personally, I think it’s a great device and I hope they do find success and continue to improve upon an already enjoyable instrument.

      @@AaronGoldbergMusic I am just expressing my view. I have lots of synths that my fellow syth heads despise but I love! I get odd looks when I still use my original Kraft 1, as It is excellent for bass lines, in my view.
      If Chompi succeeds or not I think will come down to the mad $600 price tag, for what it is. If it fails it might make future new manufacturers more aware that value for money and spec are more important than design aesthetics.
