Taking A Bite Out Of Chompi - Is It The Sampler For You?

  • Chompi, by Chompi Club, is a new contender in the sampling landscape. It's not trying to compete with the likes of MPCs or Roland's SP-404 MKII however, and instead channels a lot of the DNA of Casio's SK-1. So is it worth a bite, or made in poor taste?

    To record like you did with the ukelele you would be better off putting CHOMPI recording into latch mode by putting it into the JAMMI mode and clicking the closest knob (speed). Then flick the switch back up to record samples and you won't have to hold the CHOMPI key you can just hit it, record, hit it again to stop recording ;)

    I think youre the first reviewer who has made real use of all the "hidden" functions which the shift key accesses. Well done, will sub!

      Totally agree. First time I actually understand some of the shift functions. Would love to see more of those Easter Eggs, as the Chompiclub guys call them!

      Thank you! I'm glad to hear that. I was about to type out the phrase "big fan of shift functions," before realizing that sentence sounds more like something a robot would say.

    This would be a device that lives on the desk and finds a way into just about every recording. It's like a Ditto that shapeshifts into battle. Great presentation Josh, and Erin & Thor!

      Thank you! It's been on my desk for a while. I've been sketching out little loops on it that I always forget to record. I'll have to remember to change that. 😅

      I want to start doing them again. I went back to school so I can't commit to uploading them every Sunday right now. But who knows what the future holds?

      Good news! You can! I apologize, I didn't really bring it up in the video, but it uses a 3.5mm MIDI input on the side, so it would need an adapter for 5-pin MIDI. But I just tested it and it works!

      @@JoshIsMakingMusicit's limited to 1 channel is all. Also you can use CME WIDI Jack with CHOMPI which is a thing very much worth knowing as it means you can use an AirTurn Bluetooth foot pedal to control CHOMPI whilst playing your guitar/use CHOMPI as an instrument looper (with some cool features) 😏

    • @FfortheT
      @FfortheT 5 місяців тому +2

      Seems like playing around for inspiration is mainly the point. Since samples are a one shot (no undo, no metronome etc) you can't use it stand alone for more. Or you feed it into something bit that's not for starters

    • @andrewburridge5958
      @andrewburridge5958 5 місяців тому +1

      @@FfortheT that's a perfectly reasonable purpose for it I suppose, if it looks fun and appeals then you get some music out of it. I've recently got a circuit tracks and it's mostly to mess about with for short breaks during my workday, love it tho

    • @JoshIsMakingMusic
      @JoshIsMakingMusic  4 місяці тому +4

      I think it's aiming for a sweet spot between "experienced sampler users and musicians" and "people who have never handled a sampler before," and trying to be fun and inspirational for all involved. That's just the intent though, whether you think it succeeds and justifies itself or presents worthwhile value for you is up to you! I've definitely seen conflicting opinions, haha. 😅

    • @SamuelVenturaMusic
      @SamuelVenturaMusic 4 місяці тому +1

      It’s a really cool, intuitive little sampler with its own unique little quirks. Different equipment will lead you down different paths and result in music you wouldn’t have made otherwise. But like he said in the video, if you’re not impressed by what you see it’s probably not for you. For me, I’d love to get my hands on one and would probably spend hours on end fooling around with it…
