Tom Scholz, a MIT trained engineer, wrote, played all the instruments and recorded this whole album (not vocals) in his Boston basement apartment. The unique sound came from devices Scholz invented. Brad Delp never gets enough respect as a singer.

Brad Delp is the most underrated rock singer of all time. He can belt it out with control that NO ONE can match. Listen to the whole Boston debut album - for many years it was the biggest selling debut album of ALL TIME. 17 million+ copies. RIP Brad - he died by suicide in 2007. Tragic!

I saw Brad with Beatlejuice in NYC with my fiancé . He was playing Paul, and he knocked it out of the park!. I prefer his spectacular voice to Mercury's AND Steve Perry's. Brad's death was tragic for humanity; that great performer and his iconic voice silenced forever.

Ok, so as a producer, you need to know this whole album. Tom Scholz is the guitarist, but he produced this entire album out of his basement. Many of the effects for the guitars, bass, and vocals he created and electrically engineered himself.
Then that's Brad Delp. Brad's voice is transcendent. It was a sad day when we lost him. More Boston.

That was real music when people could actually Sing! and play their own instruments! Seems like this is the reason so many of the older generation don't think there's any real music anymore, no melody, no harmony no one plays an instrument or writes their own music and has a great voice!

The early 90s also had a big impact on Gen X (Curt Cobain was our spokesperson).

There are so many new bands and artists that are wonderful singer songwriters. They're going to be more independent because the methods of recording, without being manufactured by a label, is much more expensive. Check out some of the more well known newer artist like Gary Clark Jr, Alan Stone (his story is incredible btw), Billy Strings, Chris Stapleton, Grace Potter, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Nightsweats... the list could go on and on...

The reality that the band or any of the members are not in the Rock n Roll HOF is criminal. Where does Brad hit in the top vocalists? If you ask the common person, he’s in the top 5. If you ask the industry, for some reason people forget he even existed. Not only was he a brilliant vocalist, he was a beautiful human. I still miss him.

Brad Delp was the voice of Boston. He passed away in 2007. Tom Scholz essentially created the band while finishing his masters at MIT. He invented the guitar pedals that let him play effects and make the "Boston sound". Most of the first album was recorded in his basement on equipment he invented. I knew he was an inventor, but Wiki filled in the gaps for me about the extent of his creations. "Don't Look Back" is my personal favorite Boston song, but I grew up with them, and love tons of their music. I don't think it's too much to compare Delp and Mercury. They were amazing artists, and we're all better off for their music.

You'll start to notice that Boston sounds like a lot of other bands, and then you find out that they all actually sound like Boston because Boston pretty much invented the modern rock sound/style. Tom Scholz was a musical and engineering genius to wrote, played the instruments, and produced the album almost entirely on his own. But his true genius was getting Brad Delp as his vocalist. Delp had a voice range and variety that was only rivaled by the likes of Freddy Mercury. The results were epic. Foreplay/Longtime is a must-listen pair of songs. The Foreplay part is all about the instruments, But the Longtime section is another tour de force by Brad Delp. There is nothing bad in Boston's very unique catalog of hits.

Pegasus, the drummer with the amazing afro is Sib Hashian, who sadly passed away in 2017. A bit of trivia for you is that his daughter, Lauren Hashian, is married to "The Rock" himself, Dwayne Johnson. Unfortunately this version of the song is promotional single edit, which cuts out one of the verses. I will add my vote to the many many other commenters who have said you should listen to the entire album and react to some of the full-length album versions of the songs on there. Pegasus, this is the first track on their multi-platinum debut album. The audio on the music video is a radio edit of the studio recording (the second verse was edited out). Brad Delp sang ALL of the vocals, both lead and harmonies. The theme of the lyrics is how music is tied to our memories and emotions; hearing an old, familiar song reminded him of a past girlfriend from years earlier. If you hear only two more "Boston" songs, "Foreplay/Longtime" and "Hitch a Ride" are the ones I recommend.

If you're saying that Kansas isn't in Boston's class, at least in terms of vocals. I'm a fan of progressive rock, so I take Kansas' musicianship over Boston's all day. Miracles Out of Nowhere or The Wall or Cherokee Anthem are great prog rock tunes, while Dust in the Wind of Carry On scratch the classic rock itch (even though Carry On is ALSO a prog rock classic).

This entire album should be on it, period.
You record music listen to this album from the perspective of technology.
    1. No personal computers or software
    2. Recorded in a basement on a 12 track analog reel to reel tape machine
    3. Many of the effects were built by guitarist Tom Scholz who engineered and produced this amazing album
    4. You bring in Brad Delp on vocals which he does all the vocals on the album sonically in my opinion best album ever made still sounds fresh today and it’ll sound fresh 100 years from now every song is a work of art

Tom Sholz wrote the songs, played all the instruments, recorded and produced the album in his basement!
There's more complexity to the story, including making the record company think they were doing it their way, but they were really doing it Tom's way.
Check out the story on Wikipedia.

Boston was basically Tom Scholtz, who played ALL the instruments on this album, and singer Brad Delp. You are NOT overexaggerating. He was one of the best vocalists of the time. But definitely a tortured soul. Ended up killing himself. I second Foreplay/Long Time.

Brad Delp had an amazing range, and ability to transfer smoothly from one octave to the next. Also, Tom Scholz was an MIT educated electrical engineer who designed and built most of the bands sound equipment, including his patented Rockman guitar effects foot controlled modules.

The song you were referring to in your opening remarks is "Hooked On a Feeling," which was a hit twice: once by BJ Thomas and again by a band called Blue Swede. Both of these releases pre-dated Boston, who released the greatest debut album on rock history. There isn't a bad song on that album.
Of course, 2 minutes of Google research before recording would have told you what I just told you and made you sound way more credible.

Reaction videos to songs they have played and researched don't really have as much appeal. In fact, I was intrigued by those opening remarks. I knew it wasn't the same song but I had a hard time going from one to the other in my mind. He sounds way more credible for his not hearing it before having mixed up the two rather than less credible.

The Boston album "Third Stage' was a changing point in my youth.
The entire album was crafted meticulously to simulate the sounds and emotions of a rocket launch, a journey leaving everything behind, and the arrival to the hope of a new world... it BLEW. MY. FUCKING. MIND. at 15 years old.

I was 18 when that album came out. My friends and I were so excited and in love with it. My older cousins turned me on to Boston when I was a little kid. I remember sitting in my Uncle's Trans Am with T tops listening to their 1970's stuff and I was hooked.

      @KeithDCanada Місяць тому

@@loristone9242 I had never heard of Boston before, and my 15th birthday was coming up. My dad worked insanely long hours at a cement plant, and I think he was feeling left out of things going on at home. He was always gone, on night shifts and sleeping during the day, and we never really ever connected. I guess he decided this year he was going to get me a gift himself instead of just signing his name to the card. He knew I had started listening to music, and asked a girl behind the counter as a local record store for a recommendation. She gave him that cassette tape. It wasn't the type of music I as into, and I accepted the gift, but honestly wasn't that excited inside, because I had never heard of this band, and my dad wasn't known for his musical taste. Years later it has become one of my favorite albums of all time.
      Thanks, Dad.
