Janis was a master in the art of vocalese. Should I say mistress? No, she mastered it!

Manhattan Transfer in 80s with those outfits and hair style. Fantastic. Good old days.

Now I'm no expert in the art of vocalese, but I can honestly say that this is one extremely difficult style of jazz singing that only a few in the business can pull off. And these guys were the masters of it. And they look terrific doing it!

Just phenomenal. It seems impossible, doesn't it? I love "Joy Spring," and the Manhattan Transfer's performance of their cover of the song is just outstanding!

One of the biggest truth drops about the nature of the soul of any song they ever did.

Whew--this is my favorite version of my favorite Manhattan Transfer tune and seeing it really brings back a lot of memories. I finally had the opportunity to see them in Normal, IL at their 1992 Christmas concert. While most of the songs they performed that night were from their (then) new Christmas album, much to my delight, they performed this one since, (according to Tim Hauser, who introduced it) the message of joy really embodied the holiday spirit. Thanks so much for posting this!

Saw them in 1982 for their Extensions Tour. Drove all the way to Winnipeg from Moorhead, MN through cold snowy weather to hear them and the concert was phenomenal. Of course see the northern lights on the was home made the experience even more memorable. This is one of my favorite tunes along with Agua and the entire Brasil album.

The 2nd solo is based on Clifford Brown solo

c lew First solo is Harold Land (ts) - Clifford Brown (tpt) - Richie Powell (piano); then the solos alternate from Brown to Land to Brown to Land.

I'm with you on that. But I don't pay attention to the meaning. I'm listening to this type of singer as just another jazz musician. They're playing the pipes. Janis is really the only one I pay attention to on the solos. She might as well be playing a horn.

Botanic cat The great Jon Hendricks wrote the lyrics for this song as well as all of the other jazz classics on Manhattan Transfer's 1986 album Vocalise (including Another Night in Tunisia (which features both Hendricks and Bobby McFerrin), I Remember Clifford, Move and To You) - just one of the great vocal jazz albums of the past 40 years.
