The vocal group formed by Cheryl Bentyne, Alan Paul, Janis Siegel and Janis Siegel is mainly related to jazz, but also to other musical genres, as Brazilian Jazz, rhythm & blues, a capella, vocalese and swing.
Big Weather Report fan here, first time I’ve heard this.
Fabulous!
Their music never, ever gets old. Perhaps 300 years from now, people will think of Manhattan Transfer's music the same way we think of Beethoven's or Mozart's.
They make it look so easy, but man, the work they put into this and all their stuff. Extraordinary.
This version was so popular, all over mainstream radio back in the days in my part of the world, that I thought it was the original, long long before I knew about Weather Report and all that other Mother Jazz.
❤ I'm retired..but man I'm so in love with these since im in high school..rip Tim..
Cheryl Bentyne has the most amazing voice and she’s so beautiful too
I honestly don't know how they pull off this incredibly complex number, and do it so beautifully....
Well, they did write it!
I have love them for decades. They are absolutlely extraordinary.
always live forever ,when we here manhatten transfer we are all in the twightzone
Simply the best .... The Absolute Top Shelf .... Hands down, Greatest vocal group of my era (I'm 73, ignore my pic) and a case can be made for the best ever !!!
I sat at a table at JB Scotts and was beyond blown away....Albany was underrated
I was there early eighties I think I'm. Central ave
Damn, has it been 32 years since this concert? Tim Hauser passed in 2014. I still listen to this music.
I love them...they have no rivals, unique, brilliant, and so clever.❤👏👏👏
Now I understand why they used to win Grammy Awards all the time! Couldn't relate to them when I was younger, but I'm impressed!
This brilliant original jazz piece was first com[posed by Weather Report without lyrics. Manhattan Transfer composed brilliant lyrics for the tune and made a masterful rendition of it.
Thank you.
Actually Jon Hendricks wrote the lyrics, and did lots of other vocalise to great jazz pieces that MT performed. Lambert Hendricks and Ross was the groundbreaking group back in the day.
Incorrect: Weather Report ruined this great song by Manhattan Transfer by dipping it into a cesspit of 'jazzy chords', show-off bassplaying, silly scat singing and a bloke who thought having a mountain of keyboards somehow made him great. This song has always needed pizazz, sexiness, and close harmonies - not a band trying to out-do each other. LONG LIVE (THE) MANHATTAN TRANSFER!!
Also a live version on utube with Manhattan Transfer and Weather Report
@@hairlessx11 Nice try, but completely wrong. Joe Zawinul of Weather Report wrote this song in 1976, it was released by Weather Report on their "Heavy Weather" album in 1977, and Manhattan Transfer released their version of it on their album "Extensions" in 1979. I'm a huge fan of Manhattan Transfer, but they did not originate this song. You should probably know what you're talking about before you try to correct someone else.
Phenomenal, The artists they are singing about we're pioneers for today's jazz artists, love it!
The Manhattan Transfer = Sensational vocal dynamics
Janis arranged this and sang lead. The most underrated Jazz musician ever.
3/23/23: I have loved this group for as long as I can remember. I wish had had the opportunity to see them in person. Janis Siegel reminds me of Nia Vardalos of My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
I got to see them live at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in 1993. They were amazing.
They are still performing, though Tim has passed on. If you ever have the opportunity to see them. Do it.
The ultimate cool. Fabulous ❤❤❤❤
Wir erlebten Manhattan Transfer 1979 in Chicago in
einem Konzert dieser Gruppe,
sensationell, wir kauften
sofort mehrere LPs und
lieben ihre Songs bis heute!!
I was lucky enough to see Weather Report in Ann Arbor MI when Jaco was on bass and Peter Erskin was on drums. When they started this song the crowd just about blew the roof off the place. Incredible show.
One of the best musicgroups i know, their music was fantastic
All 4 members are fantastic in this concert but special notice to Alan Paul for doing it all with his arm in a sling! The show must go on!
LOL - I couldn't figure out why he wasn't doing the arm movements with the other three - I didn't realize he was in a sling!
Never gets old.
Or at least, that 's what I wish !!
Professionalism at its highest, and they are bringers of joy
Maybe the best quartet, performing an epic song... great!
They sound as good as I saw her again by the Mama's and the papa's
Yo no diría el mejor, pero sí entre los grandes. A gustos... Porque algunos les gustarán más The Nylons, The Bobs, The Kings Singers,... Pero evidentemente son geniales 😉
My secret fantasy was always to have Manhattan Transfer sing this with Jaco on Bass. RIP Jaco and Tim
That would be legendary..Joe Zawinul too
yeah. the song requires a more out front bass.
"Vocalese"...one of the most influencial and important Albums of all time !
I have never tired of this song or this group love it .proper music
Ok, I am crying right now because this is the music I grew up listening to. And you just gained a new subscriber.
magic is reality with Manhattan
I love the passion they have
Best music group ever!!! One
does not geht tired listening to
their Songs!! ABBA can't reach
their level !!
Love this group! Love the bass man.
Tim?

I LOVE BIRDLAND
Timeless!
Beautiful
Love the Vocals and Energy!!! Great Musicians, ...Great, Seeing Jamie.
Peace*
Pure dynamite!
One of my favorite songs amazing jazz. Great memories as well
Unique 👏👏👏👏
Brilliant !!
Fantastic!
... Some people creating new-fangled below-par sub-standard forms of music with burlesque style attire and dancing in the presemt generation have not only excellent musicians in the present to compete with ... but mind blowing musicians from this past generation, and others ...
Thankfully UA-cam is ensuring that that some of these younger genres camnot overwhelm us ... overwhelm the world with nonsense ... as happened before with the advent of PR in 1976 and more recently with GR in the last decade or two, for example ...
The late Tim Hauser has an idea to get these voices of this group performing the iconic “Birdland!”
Manhattan transfer are not
just a band that cover others
songs they literally reinterpret them
to sound like the original!
Super
Well done!
Alex Blake, on bass, was also with Stan Getz that year on his final Scandinavia tour.
That is a terrific performance from Manhattan Transfer. I did not realize that Jon Hendricks wrote the lyrics until quite recently.
Pull out the dearest memories of a kind and let them become Christmas gifts suggestions for your beloved ones fans, let only music rule the world and let it sound just this good fans
it was Myers rum and soda, dash of bitters and a lime squeeze
I love this!
Great job as usual for TMT!
I saw and met Tommy Campbell, the drummer, years ago in Boston in a place called The Pub playing with Kevin Eubanks, guitar player extraordinaire.
prelijepo nice

We use to play this in school stage band, no vocals, just piano drums trumpets trombones and sax's.. I was on baritone sax.. we kicked it up a couple notches though, Maynard Ferguson style
Jamie bravo nice
Nada que ver con la música decadente de hoy, esto si es música a los oídos.
BTW 438, is a jaco sample

Shawn Sang this In Fairfax H.S. Talent Show 1978
Let me share.
I want to know why Famous black bassist Alex Blake was hidden by a curtain during show?
Alex blake the best bass player manhattan ever had
This group has been popular with 55-year-olds for 55 years.
Josef Joe Zawinul .Wien 3 ..Erdberg
So i più meglio de tutti
The original Birdland by original composer is even BETTER than this! All instrumental too. This is a GREAT translation though so-to-speak.
Who is the originan Weather Report or Quincy Jones?
@@nybornFunk Joe Zawinul (July 7th, 1932 - September 11th, 2007), keyboardist for Weather Report, wrote "Birdland" in 1977.
This song is so ... very... bird 🐦

Charlie PARKER...ie...BIRDLAND...
They always played this too fast live.
great voices....technically brilliant .....but odd song...
Great performance, but man I hate the song. It sounds like warmup exercises.
How to take a Weather Report classic and make it cringeworthy. ouch. Sorry fans.
I'm glad Jaco never had to see this trash
He would have appreciated it, unlike you.
Saw them in Manila....A great show.....WOW..!
