Common Leopard Gecko Health Problems

  • Good Morning, Reptilians! This week, we're talking about common illnesses and health issues in leopard geckos.
ALSO, I somehow managed to forget obesity on this list. Captive leopard geckos tend to become overweight when they are being fed too much, or have too little enrichment in their tanks - this can lead to organ strain and shortened lifespans. Make sure you're keeping a check on their weight, making sure that their tails aren't getting too big (they should never be bigger than their mid section). Obviously if they're about to brumate or they're gravid, they'll be a heavier than normal, but otherwise, looking up "leopard gecko weight charts" can be super helpful. 😊

I just want to add to the respiratory infection part that they don’t come from the temperature or humidity being too low or too high. They come from bacteria due to the enclosure not being cleaned enough or thoroughly enough. Low/high temps or low/high humidity causes the bacteria to grow and subsequently that causes respiratory infections. So keep your enclosures clean!!

I went to a reptile expo this weekend and found a female leopard for 20$ that was a rescue and she was sooo skinny , barely even any fat in their tail, I had to take her and try and get her better glad I found this video , I haven’t gotten her to eat yet I got a bunch of wax worms and some electrolyte powder I was told to soak her in, still trying to get her to eat. Do I just put a worm in a dish everyday until she eats it or should I wait a week or so until I know she should be hungry . Her tail is really skinny but it’s definitely not as skinny as the pictured on in the video it’s not a stick tail just really skinny

If there really is no way to get him to a vet soon enough, you could force him to drop his tail as a last resort. Not a pleasant thing to do, but it may be necessary to keep it from progressing.
