Thank you so much! Note: If you have your printer setup for WiFi communication only, I had to establish a USB connection with my desktop in order to successfully downgrade the software. I wrote the person in charge of printers at HP about this issue, and I plan to file complaints with the appropriate agencies, as well as investigate participating in a class action lawsuit. HP was sued about similar issues that resulted in a class action settlement of $1.5 million in March 2023.
I've been on this for 2 hours now! Thanks for advising to remove WIFI setting and just connect via USB - Computer to Printer. I cannot believe it worked. I just don't know why everyone is becoming greedy.
Thanks for your update. I still cant fix my printer and nobody lists how to update on Win 10/11 most are on Macs on this thread. I will have to buy a printer just to print anything. What HP is doing violates federal antitrust laws in the US. Their action to block non HP cartridges from being used in their printers is considered anticompetitive monopolization where they try to maintain a monopoly of power and control which products can be used in their printers. This is intentional anticompetitive conduct and a clear and obvious violation of US federal antitrust law. I plan to also file some complaints.
I killed for example 5 pieces of HP printers cause of my angry. And this shitty rule turn me really angry like never before... totally agree with u. fuck that scammers!
Thank you for the help!! To answer your last question of how to prevent future updates: Settings -> Printer maintenance -> Update the printer -> Printer Update Options -> Select "Do not check" -> Click "No"
Followed the directions and it worked perfectly for me. I was able to shut off auto updates by also following the directions. Back in business and will never buy another HP printer. Thanks!!!
Well I went and made the mistake I bought an HP 2636 and you are right . After replacing both cartridges my printer will not work at all so I am so glad there are people out there like yourself to help us unfornate . Thank you and I will never buy another HP series printer of any kind .
Thanks for posting this. I have the same printer and got this message last week. I just got the printer out of the trash to try the update and it worked. I connected the printer with a usb cable and it worked right off. I've been using ebay cartridges since the printer was new with no issues with the ink. I'm not paying $99 for HP ink.
Thank you for sharing this! So frustrating!! I am in graduate school for Nurse Practitioner and very dependent on my computer/printer right now. It was not a pleasant surprise when I attempted to print something for an assignment. My husband and I had nearly resigned ourselves to the fact that we were going to have to get a new printer. Thanks to your post, we have likely saved a few hundred dollars between a new printer and new ink cartridges. Thank you, thank you!!
Seriously, I was thrown into this time waster this morning and it's thanks to you and the comments below that I managed to re-set. I was almost in tears. I couldn't stop thinking of other solutions and you are saviour. This greediness needs to stop. These companies should not get away with this. It's like rocking up at a supermarket with our own shopping bag and they refuse to bag it. You just need to stop HP. The only problem I have is because I played with my 6960 I can't print photos and I have to press another button Print even after I pressed the Print button.
I do not know who you are Mathew but I want to say a BIG thank you for resoving this issue. HP needs to allow people to make their own purchasing desicions rather than "lock" them into buying their products. Its like a car. You can buy original or non original parts based on your budget. Your instructions were clear and to the point. Good Show my friend!
SUCCESS! Thank you so much! Printer had been working fine on off-brand cartridges for a year or more, and just stopped today, giving me the same error. Reverting to an older version of the HP printer firmware worked perfectly. First, turn off auto updates, as he instructed. Then, go to the link above, click your printer model, download the older firmware version and apply it. The printer will refresh, and you should be back in business. SHAME ON YOU, HP!
Matthew, you superstar. The updated link worked perfectly on my HP8730. Automatic updates are now off and HP can ****off. Cheers buddy, sending you lots of positive vibes from the UK
I just changed my cartridge today and got the error message. Spent all afternoon looking for a solution before I found your video. It WORKED!! Thank you so much. 🤪
@clairebell876 I have genuine ink cartridges. And it still says it's older generation and can't be used. 2 full 952XL cartridges. Honestly, the best fix is to NEVER buy HP to begin with.
Awesome, worked a treat on my HP 7740. Many thanks and I am fully with your comments in the video. My printer was *this* close to exiting the building at high speed. Vertically. Kudos also to the sites offering firmware downgrades. HP's line on this should be illegal under EU laws on restrictive trading practices.
After many hours searching and frustration about this issue for our HP OfficeJet 6958, your instructions/video were awesome and worked perfectly, with a little trial and error (but only due to my impatience with not following with your steps.). I also realized that I had to use a Windows PC to download the firmware: didn't work on my Mac. Thanks so much, Matthew. Also enjoyed your frustration: reflective of mine!
Thank you for this video. I have the same printer and got the "non-HP chip" message a few days ago. I followed the instructions and now it works perfectly.
Great! This worked a treat for me. Took a lot of perseverance; I had to remove the printer and set it up as a USB printer for the firmware downgrade. During the firmware update/downgrade, it seemed to hang on 'Verifying Update' on the printer screen for about 10 minutes, then it suddenly applied the firmware and the cartridge message change to a recommendation. I also had to re-install the driver for the printer when setting it up on USB. I got this from the HP Support page. And then had to go through a lot of setup windows, ensuring I didn't let it report anything back to HP or allow it to monitor the cartridges. All working fine now though. Thank you for the video. 🙏
Thank you so much for this. I got called into work today about our printer being out of office, (small healthcare office) and I proceeded to spend like an hour wasting my life trying to solve this problem. THANK YOU!!!
Thank you. I'd found the updates but couldn't get it to recognise my printer. Taking the cartridges out did the trick. All fixed...for now. Thanks again.
THANK YOU for posting this video.... I bought this $780 printer for $10 and ran into the same error message and thanks to your video its working... you and your contact from reddit are awesome...
Thank you sooooo much!!! It worked with your very detailed video and the firmware from reddit. Regarding the 'turn off automatic updates' then he has this step that worked for me: On the printer display: Click Settings / Setup icon > Printer Maintenance / Tools Update the Printer > Printer Update Options > Do Not Check On the question "Do you want to turn on Printer Updates?" select "No" to off printer updates. Then press Home
Thank you! This just happened to me. I followed your instructions and found the website with the downloads - downloaded the version and yes, my printer now works. And, I found in the printer to stop updates so hopefully this doesn't happen again.
HATE HP! Here is how to PREVENT printer from automatically checking for updates... do the following. Click into Settings on the printer itself, go into Printer Maintenance, Update the Printer, and make sure that: Printer Update Options is set to "Do not Check" Thank you for above, it fixed my issues Matthew.
Thanks, worked for my HP 6968 printer. Reset to factory settings like he shows in this video, then if you have HP Smart loaded on you computer you go to Printer Settings, then Advanced Settings, click printer update, then at the bottom you can select Do no check for updates and Apply and be sure to select "No" on the warning screen so it will not turn on automatic updates.
I've had a really shitty last couple days and I was about on the verge of tears with my POS HP trash heap...long story short this worked. Thank you so much for posting this.
I am enrolled in their ink program and they did this to me! They are the ones that sent me the cartridge! The only thing I can do is buy another printer as I don’t think I can manage what you did!
The ink cartridges in the Instant Ink program are THEIRS. If you decide to opt-out of their subscription, you simply return their cartridges and purchase your own. Your ignorance is not their fault. I haven't purchased ink cartridges in years.
That works! Once the laptop was able to find the printer it downloaded a lesser version of firmware and it started printing. Make sure your laptop has the printer driver loaded on it. Then you're good to go.
Thanks so much. I was about to purchase new cartridges and return the non HP's that weren't working. Now I will go straight to Reddit & dump the updates. Much appreciated.
You rock man... it was easy thanks to you!!! They actually asked on my download if I wanted the Auto U D's! Pushing the right corner of the error message gets you further each time until you get to the update/ install I went all the way back to basic settings on my comp and it picked it up right away. I think it made it easier for the printer to find the hook up. 1st time for me Great job and thanks'
I echo everyone else here - this is absolutely great! I was at wit's end trying to figure this out. Thank you so much for troubleshooting and finding the solution!
Thank you so much for this video, we have a 7740 printer at the office that must have updated itself recently and we started getting this issue. I followed the steps and got it downgraded so we are back in business.
Man, I love this video and I feel your pain with HP! Watching your video was funny! I love the humor! I was laughing because I am trying to get mine to work again with generic ink! They work great when they're working!
This worked perfectly for my HP 7740! Thank you! P.S. It's nonsense that HP said the new firmware *will* allow non-HP cartridges if the 7740 was manufactured before Dec 1, 2016. If previous firmware allowed non-HP cartridges, then they can make any new firmware support it too - regardless of manufacture date.
Worked on HP 6962 printer. Windows 10. Used a USB cable - would not work over the WiFi. Ran the downgrade - the LCD screen turned off but the power button stays on; LCD screen comes back on with a green screen with numbers 12345; after complete the printer restarts. Told me "non HP ink blah blah blah"; click OK on the screen. Print a test page. Done. Thank you Matt!!
THANK YOU for sharing your research and the link! Same as many have stated- your efforts really helped me avoid a new $$$ purchase for absolutely no reason. I too plan to contact HP and give them a piece of my mind...
Thank you Matthew, for the download. I, like many others, would gladly take part in a suit against HP for forcing us to purchase and use only their ink! Ridiculous.
THANKYOU SO MUCH. This worked for me, after 2-3 hours of trying everything else I could find, online. I have the office pro 7740 printer HP. I am done with HP products after this printer or the remanufactured ink cartridges stop working/no longer available.
Same thing with cartridges happened to me. But also, it was not possible to scan via wifi without HP account and sending scans to some HP cloud somewhere. Hence i scan ID's there is no way i am going to send any ID or any of the private or company documents to some unknown destination. Their official solution was to connect printer to PC via cable so only i can scan on my pc. Also, their quite simple scanning software which allowed various quality settings and document scanning page by page stopped working. So the HP6950 went to recycling and i bought canon MB 2150. Turned it on, deactivate updates and then connect it to wifi. Works great, cheaper cartridges and printing overall. Simple. Goodbye HP and never come back. Thank you for video, there are still 2 HP6950's at my friends, i would try to resolve one on Saturday and see how it works.
This worked beautifully, except that then the printer told me I had cartridge problems with my black cartridge (only). I was able to pop out the chip from another 3rd party cartridge that worked previously, and switch it into the new full cartridge. That worked!
This worked for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710! After installing turn off updates go to Settings- printer maintenance- update printer - printer update options- Select do not check.
As someone who works in IT who's workplace bought these heaps of shit from HP (Horrible Products): This is a good method of getting aftermarket cartridges to work but it is a bit risky. If it goes wrong you can hard brick the printer. A safer option if you don't mind no ink levels is swap the chip from the OEM cartridge to the aftermarket one. (Yep, if you've already thrown the OEM you're outta luck :/) On the HPs at work you have to break the plastic on the cartridge as the chip is molded in there deliberately so you buy HP's overpriced crap. Once you get it out you can swap it over to the aftermarket unit and you're all good to go. From experience this video is 100% correct and HP are a disgrace. Imagine you buy a car yet can only fill it up with petrol at the dealer with fuel that's 2-3x more expensive than everywhere else, that's what it's like lmao. Buy Brother laser models if you can they don't have this shit. HP are been facing a class action for pulling this shit on their customers.
😀 Thank you, I am so happy, few hours of work -it works ! I will never buy HP again. The price of HP refill is a legal robbery ! I was on the verge to buy Epson eco tank on Amazon, but with your update I can continue to use my printer. So better for the environment. To others: do not forget to switch off the automatic update on your HP Printer after the retro update.
It worked! Yay and thank you, Matt! On the printer itself, I reset to factory settings, then turned off automatic updates. On my PC, I reinstalled my HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer, disabled the HP cartridge protection via the printer’s IP address typed into a browser, installed the older HP driver via the Reddit link, restarted, and voila! The only problem that I encountered was that, instead of searching for that original Reddit post to get the right driver, I lazily clicked a link posted in a comment thinking that it would take me to it. It didn’t. The original Reddit post is still online and working fine though. You just have to search for it. I saved a copy of the driver to my “bag o’ tricks” folder in case I ever need it again. The generic cartridges are working great now. Thanks so much, Matt!
So what I did is, i had a set of cartridges that did work in the printer but the new ones I ordered didn't so I got my pick set and pulled the chip out, there is a little plastic thing that goes around the chip with legs on it that go in the holes. then I switched them over. it was very easy and it worked.
UPDATE! so excited, got it to work. during my previous attempts to fix this, i had changed the settings to not allow any firmware updates but i set it back & now everything is working. thank you so much for this.
Though I had an issue with some of the cartridges. I could choose: every of the colour, and a different brand black, or a different brand yellow. For some reason yellow didn't work correctly with the black, but I suspect the (cheap) cartridges are the culprit of that issue.
Thank you so much! Note: If you have your printer setup for WiFi communication only, I had to establish a USB connection with my desktop in order to successfully downgrade the software. Wow 1.5 million. They probably gladly paid that. Lmao what a joke.
This just happened to me and it has absolutely turned me off ever buying ANY HP product ever again. What a crooked shady company.
I killed for example 5 pieces of HP printers cause of my angry. And this shitty rule turn me really angry like never before... totally agree with u. fuck that scammers!
Obrigado, meu amigo! Consegui resolver o problema da minha impressora aqui no Brasil.
Thank you for the help!!
To answer your last question of how to prevent future updates:
Settings -> Printer maintenance -> Update the printer -> Printer Update Options -> Select "Do not check" -> Click "No"
Thanks Lynn. I was so frustrated by that point.
Thank you!!
Followed the directions and it worked perfectly for me. I was able to shut off auto updates by also following the directions. Back in business and will never buy another HP printer. Thanks!!!

Thank you. This saved me throwing this in the bin. Biggest mistake I made in a long time was buying a HP printer.
How can they legally do this.
Tesla: “If HP can do it, so can we!”
BMW & Mercedes: “Ditto!”
Capitalism at it's finest...
They even made a ad saying that non hp ink/toner is like putting a usb stick full of viruses into your pc
@clairebell876 I have genuine ink cartridges. And it still says it's older generation and can't be used. 2 full 952XL cartridges. Honestly, the best fix is to NEVER buy HP to begin with.

Hope not a silly question, but can you point me to the section for 7740?
LMAO !exiting the building at high speed!.
Where did he show how to fix 7740 or can you just tell me how to bypass it please. I got remanufactured ink and I need to bypass
I had the downgrade on my PC, but it doesn't found the istallation... how did you make it works?
Where did you download the firmware from?
This upload of yours is so HELPFUL! Thank you for giving me a fix that allows me to use my printer. HP should be ashamed of themselves.
After many hours searching and frustration about this issue for our HP OfficeJet 6958, your instructions/video were awesome and worked perfectly, with a little trial and error (but only due to my impatience with not following with your steps.). Thank you for this video. I have the same printer and got the "non-HP chip" message a few days ago. I followed the instructions and now it works perfectly.
I went to Reddit and searched for that individual and found him. The link and step-by-step instructions worked. Thanks a bunch!
Thank you so much for sharing and for all of your hard work! You have no idea how much joy this tip brought to my life and I hope many others.

THANK YOU for posting this video.... I bought this $780 printer for $10 and ran into the same error message and thanks to your video its working... you and your contact from reddit are awesome...
Thank you Matthew, I tried this and I was stunned, it actually worked! You have saved me a fortune, thanks once again.
Thank you sooooo much!!! It worked with your very detailed video and the firmware from reddit. Regarding the 'turn off automatic updates' then he has this step that worked for me:
On the printer display:
Click Settings / Setup icon > Printer Maintenance / Tools
Update the Printer > Printer Update Options > Do Not Check
On the question "Do you want to turn on Printer Updates?" select "No" to off printer updates.
Then press Home

you're so right!!!
Thank you, restoring to the factory setting did not work, but setting up LD firmware driver resolved the issue. You saved me at least $300.
Thanks - I was able to get the downgrade installed and my old cartridges work great. Disable updates and saved money. Much appreciated
After 2 years, still helping! Thank you man.
Huge thumbs up for this! Just sorted two of my 7740 printers which got updated last month. Thanks!
Thank you for posting! I know this is an old video, but it saved my butt today. I will never buy another HP product, EVER!
I am so glad that I came across your video. It worked and saved me a headache of having to do so much research on my own. Thank you 😊
Thank you SO much! After trying everything else I could read about fixing this problem, your solution was the only one that worked! Bless You!
That works! Once the laptop was able to find the printer it downloaded a lesser version of firmware and it started printing. Make sure your laptop has the printer driver loaded on it. Then you're good to go.

Thanks! I was halfway through my Amazon return when I found your advice. Easy peasy. I still hate HP but now I can use a cheaper ink.
'I hate HP!'
continues to use HP.

Matt! YOU ARE THE MAN!!!! YOU JUST SOLVED MY PROBLEM WITH MY HP6978. Thanks for the video and the link!!!!!!🙏🏼
Thanks for sharing this... it worked seamlessly and I didn't have to take my carts out for it to find my printer.
Thanks for creating this video and sharing the link, it solved the problem for my 6960.
Same thing with cartridges happened to me. But also, it was not possible to scan via wifi without HP account and sending scans to some HP cloud somewhere. Hence i scan ID's there is no way i am going to send any ID or any of the private or company documents to some unknown destination. Goodbye HP and never come back.
Thank you for video, there are still 2 HP6950's at my friends, i would try to resolve one on Saturday and see how it works.
That was the right solution. As for the scanning issue, I have been reduced to scanning documents to a USB drive which works fine.
After trying lots of other suggestions, you saved the day! This worked perfectly--thank you!
OMG thank you so much! It worked. Much appreciate your efforts!
This worked beautifully, except that then the printer told me I had cartridge problems with my black cartridge (only). I was able to pop out the chip from another 3rd party cartridge that worked previously, and switch it into the new full cartridge. That worked!
My guy! It works a treat! 🙌 Many thanks from Australia! 🏆
Worked perfectly for my 7740 Office Jet. Thank you so much!
Thank you very much for this!
P.S. Your commentary during your frustration had me howling :D
Worked great!!! Thanks a bunch for putting in the time and sharing it.
Thank you! It worked, and you saved my sanity!
incredibly helpful !!! saved me from spending however much on a new set of cartridges.
I detest HP. 2 laptops busted and now this with the printer. Thank you for this, I will try it.
Thank you so much! I just used the link and it still works!
Many thanks for posting this. Definitely when my printer breaks I will look at alternative printers
This worked for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710! After installing turn off updates go to Settings- printer maintenance- update printer - printer update options- Select do not check.
As someone who works in IT who's workplace bought these heaps of shit from HP (Horrible Products):
This is a good method of getting aftermarket cartridges to work but it is a bit risky.
HP are been facing a class action for pulling this shit on their customers.
stop scaremongering
Fantastic, just worked on my Officejet 7720 a treat!! How dare you HP, there are laws against this!!
I downgraded and it worked thanks a lot for your help and the link man!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!. my printer now works again after following your video and downgrading my install!
Thanks Matthew, that (latest) link worked a treat 👍
Thank you for your very concise instructions! That will be helpful for others - which is what it is all about.
@@mbrenengen You’re a kind human. Thanks again.
The downgrade i got from the new link worked perfektly with my HP OfficeJet Pro 8718. Thank you so much!
Thanks alot you helped me save my company from unnecessary costs be blessed.🙏🏿
So what I did is, i had a set of cartridges that did work in the printer but the new ones I ordered didn't so I got my pick set and pulled the chip out, there is a little plastic thing that goes around the chip with legs on it that go in the holes. then I switched them over. it was very easy and it worked.
Yup. Voiding a warranty is always a good idea. 🤡
UPDATE! so excited, got it to work. during my previous attempts to fix this, i had changed the settings to not allow any firmware updates but i set it back & now everything is working. thank you so much for this.
Thank you for sharing. I am using the same ink brand you are using. They are great.
Thank you, you saved my life! ... or at least for the moment: I downgraded the firmware, and it works.
Thanks, I fixed my HP 7740 using your methord. Definitely I will never buy HP printer anymore. Thanks again, that is really a good solution ...
Thank you!!! I’m hoping they restored the links to the older drivers on that page but I’ll spend today looking around!
I love how you started this video.
Thanks for the updated webpage, still works!
Though I had an issue with some of the cartridges. I could choose: every of the colour, and a different brand black, or a different brand yellow.
For some reason yellow didn't work correctly with the black, but I suspect the (cheap) cartridges are the culprit of that issue.
Hi, Matt. Where I can download old firmware for HP 6958? Thanks
I took the chip off the old cartridges and put them on the new ones and it works.
GRACIAS POR TANTO !!! Lo hice en una hp 6970 todo un lujo. Gracias !
This worked for my HP6968. Thank you so much!!
