Outstanding session: technique, science, & history. Good simple exercises that can be amped up. Thx
Thanks so much David!
Great Job! "When the Levee Breaks" was recorded in a stairwell with mics placed as high as 3 floors up. Bonham was absolutely the king but they rarely played it live not being able to reproduce that sound. Hendrix's "All along the Watchtower" fell to the same fate, because he had access to to a new 16 track in N.Y. and worked months playing most of what you hear. But 2 of the best songs ever.
this guy is awesome! just played along, so nice!!!!
God lord! So much amazing info here! I've been playing 25+ years. And he gave most of the advice I'd give a new student in this short video.
Dude, awesome man
His groove and control is exceptional. His groove has strong characterization in the best sense of the word. It’s as though each strike of hand or foot is so intentional.
Dude, man, awesome!
really great vid!!
I freaking love Ben! He definitely has some good tips and tricks
I love that 2nd n third set. Cool 😎
that K crash even sounded good. Nice job. Great breakdown. Subscribed.
Both that snare and that bass drum sound _really_ good
"i like the way you .. googgoo googgoo pah"

Hilarious

Just discovering you guys now (oh well!) I dare say, you are the best and most informative teachers on the tube
I like the part where he said “dude.”
Damn. I missed that part. Must have been quick and subtle.
I liked the fourth " dude" just as much as the forty-fourth
Bonham’s drums were recorded in a stairwell at Headley Grange. The openness of the drums is from overhead mics places way above his kit.
The “slap back” you mention is from a Binson Echorec echo device applied during the mix.
Great song and even better drum intro.
Hello, do you know the name of the song he's talking about. I looked for ENCHANTED, but I can´t find anything... =( =(. Thank you =)
WOW! this channel is damn informative.. subbed! also, that kick sound is tight!!!
solid stuff ... cheers dudes ..nice
The first one of these I have seen. Very good. There is a lot of trying to learn things that happen as a byproduct of what is going on here as well. I can't emphasize enough the lesson from 3.00-3.30. That is all about presence and looking like why you are there. It's drumming 101 but because it is expected, it is never really touched on. Anyone starting out should adopt that and not let any doubt, or the look of it, creep in. Move, and look like you are feeling it. If you could look up and see anyone watching, they will be doing the same. And 95% of them won't know the mess ups us drummers hear and fret over. Dude.
amazing lessons... amazing channel.. thanks a lot, i now know how to do something different, at least im trying..
Me thinks me's getting hooked to these vids 😁
When the levee breaks was recorded in a stairwell, It was not a mistake. It was just a great tracking idea. Great website!!!
hey nice to see 180 drums in youtube now ... :)
Great, thank you..!
I studied Rock n Roll bass drum in the 70s. This reminds me of that. Still have the book.
No, the studio that Dave Grohl talks about incessantly is Sound City in LA. When The Levee Breaks was recorded in Headley Grange, England. Thanks for the lesson!
Great tips! Can you share what wooden beat he's using? Thanks a lot!
Dude, wow dude!
Ben is the real deal. He can do it...and explain it.
That kick drum though!
I love the punchiness on that kit. Is that birch wood??
Cool vid.. Sounds awesome. G.H
Absolutely dude!
I need some advice on practicing. How long should I practice these bass drum speed exercises on a daily basis?
The studio Zeppelin used for the fourth album was Headly Grange
Finally! A DRUMMER'S channel!
Bro, dude man
Dig it!
killer man
Always been a single pedal guy myself too. It's like anything else - Practice, Practice, Practice, and a huge dose of Led Zeppelin's John Bonham (among others). Then some day you'll be ready to tackle Achilles Last Stand and / or the Live Version of No Quarter where the Triplets are plentiful and oh so subtle, but intense. Just as hand playing is all in the wrist and the 'Uttering" of the fingers, Bass Pedal is all in the Ankles and the roll of the ball of your foot.
I'm still learning and would of loved if you threw some fills in to learn off them beats
04:48 Enthusiasm: a feeling of energetic interest in a particular subject or activity and a desire to be involved in it, or a subject that produces such a feeling:
Jake! Cool stuff you're into now man. Where are you (the show) based? Love it bro
Thank you Brendan! Great to hear from you. Always admired your drumming growing up.
so cool
My favorite run is from this song called catch a groove... i use to love rapping to it...
It's funny I use to work with this guy at GC. Cool dude. What up Ben?!
The zeppelin echo was made with a Binson Echorec echo device. I only learned it recently myself.
Great vid guys, but what was the name of the unbelievable single pedal hardcore drummer Ben mentioned?
Yah, right on. It's not about speed but control.
hi what mic is that used on the snare?
I finally learnt how to play Goo Goo Pah!
It is wild. Placement… no sloppy sorta got it, vibe. Hear the rhythm you wanna play in your head, then get the dynamics right on every percussive instrument you strike. Mouth the rhythm while you play it “kinda like beat boxing” …Playing MUSIC on the DRUMS!
Great basic lesson. So new drummers don't get the wrong info. To the commentator. The Hi-Hat technique is NOT the Moeller method. Its simply called Accented 8ths or 16th depending. The Moeller Method is how you use your wrist to get a sound, as is Gladstone, and several other methods. What he'playing is a pattern, not a wrist technique.
Andy Johns, the engineer, had Bonham set up his Ludwig in a stairwell at Headley Grange, a poorhouse in Hampshire, England, which had been converted into a recording and rehearsal space. Johns then ran to the top, grabbed some cables, and set up two Beyerdynamic M160's in a stereo pair on the second-floor landing.
The only signal processing done on the drums was compression and an added echo. He compressed the reverb a bit also, but ever so slightly. The rest was the 100% natural acoustics of the stairwell. Zero-acoustic treatment was used on the drums
There you have it. The actual real story
this is guy a beast. both of you btw
Thanks!
What's that little black pedal with a single switch? Is it some kind of a router?
Dope
Is that the beat from rock candy montrose?
What is he stepping on before he plays ?
Hey guys, what's that foot switch on his left he keeps tapping on before playing?
To switch on/off vocal mics and prevent cymbal bleed!
180 DRUMS interesting ok thanks! Keep up the great vids!
Probably a beat machine

You're welcome Guillermo :)
More on the way ;)
orange _dude_ yeeeeeeaaa huuuuge duude riiight cooool... boiiiiii sthu
great bass drum routine, but whats the bicep routine!?!?
Exorcise
I mean the foundational technique is pretty obvious.. Just buy a bro-shirt with tiny sleeves dudebrochill69420
what's the button on his left foot?
“Hardcore metal”
I don’t know much about Zeppelin or Taylor Swift, but as soon as I heard that groove, I thought Rhymin and Stealin by the Beastie Boys.
Never mind! Just realized they sampled Zeppelin. Thanks for teaching me something.
Less talk
More play!
EDIT: After subbing, I watched 3 other videos. I was disappointed, the videos were unfocused and the people were awkward. It's too bad.
He's such a bro! Lol. But, check out them biceps... And the guy on the drums is NOT a bro. Interesting combo. But, the lesson itself is FANTASTIC! Good to learn right foot independence. The best drummers can groove with or without a second bass pedal. I am going to subscribe.
I think the notation for the kick drum pattern in example 4 is incorrect. The second quaver rest on '2' should be dotted?
cool
groovy
4:42 Just look at those heads :D
That's an interesting thing I didn't know about that Taylor swift/ zeplin beat. My band uses a variation of that beat in one of our songs it has a few extra bass drum notes on the 4th measure and 8th measure on the uh of those measures. Then going to a polyrythem during the chorus.
The accent on the hi-hat you referred to as a moeller I think is more accurately described as simply shank-tip.
Chris L you’re right, a moeller technique would turn the 8th notes on the hat into 16th notes
My man, Ben! I have hung with him a few times - great guy and great player
wow
What is the purpose of the foot switch you are pushing on and off?
Wayne Giggins : Maybe it’s to turn off his, or both headset mic’s.
That would be the way to hear only the drum mic’s.
Or, conversely, maybe it turns the drum mic’s on and off.
Or both ... going from headset mic’s to drum mic’s.
That last possibility would be the best.
hey whats up just pick up sticks after 30 years i dont know anything but i have the beat in my head any help please thanks drum on ssgt ellison george
The responsible for the Bonham groove, besides Bonzo, was the Binson echo.
What is that thing he is stepping on with his left foot
Every drummer should learn how to put the kick and the snare on any quarter, eighth, or 16th note that they want to in playing beats.
6:05 look where his foot is on the pedal!! Of course personal preference, but definitely worth noting
Great video but what’s with the plunging necklines
Great drummer! But I say what's good for the right is good for the left
Duuuude loool man dude
I know the foot switch is for microphone muting, but the times he keeps pressing it on and off is just so awkward when nobody says nothing, then their expression is so dull
Conan Obrien was a rad dude when he was younger
Lydia by Highly Suspect also has that Taylor Swift groove
David Cinamon it definitely does not
Robotic voice: Dude, that sounds great man.
