Just when you thought things couldn't get any Funkier, Ben goes and pulls out a total Gadd-ism on this 180 Challenge. "Gadd-ism" is a direct reference to Steve Gadd. Stop what you're doing and go check that cat out... Now! Then hurry back here and work on this... Or work on this first, then go watch Steve Gadd when you're not aloud to make any more noise and the neighbors have gone to bed. BOOM!

► Ben is a touring/sessions drummer based in Nashville, TN. He’s often so busy that he clocks more than 300 gigs a year. Ben is an encyclopedia when it comes to drum history and what’s hot on the scene right now. When he’s not playing or teaching, Ben can be found hanging out, watching Sponge Bob with his wife Kayla, their new baby and their dog Max.

For anyone wanting to learn this pattern search for a video here on UA-cam: Chris Brien Drum Lesson No. 40, How to play the Mozambique.
The way he breaks this down, you will get the pattern in 5 minutes. It’s basically a linear pattern except for beat 1 which is hands together. Once you have the pattern it’s just a matter of developing speed and accuracy.

Actually beat “one” is a “left hand flam” right hand Grace note on cowbell with a left hand Main note on snare

Oh its a Latin rhythm. Cause I thought it was from Mozambique. Google says that's in Africa. I'm confused and perhaps it doesn't matter.

Its not from mozambique he said it wrong. Its also pronounced mozambiKAY. Not mozamBEEK

All Afro-Cuban, so called latin grooves have their roots in Africa too.

This is one of the best explanations I've seen of this must know groove.

Thanks for the notations. I've looking for this exact notation. I play a lot of altin cowbell patterns but this is what I need to learn more. Love from Vietnam

Doesn’t look like a free lesson exists I tried off three formats and it said “page not found” Per all three formats is a transcription of this Mozambique pattern available?

    Booooooh

Guys the bell pattern is called the cascara!! It’s not just a cool pattern. It’s like one of the most common Latin patterns or timbale shell patterns. Why is it called this; because CASCARA means SHELL in Spanish!!! It comes from Timbale grooves/patterns. Please know what you’re talking about if you’re gonna do an educational video. That being said. Sick beat and well played. I could listen to it all day long.

    Both feets hit together

The tip of the stick plays the body of the bell on 2 - The “E”of 3 - & “4” (sometimes on 4). It’s weird because it sounds like he’s not always hitting the tip on 4! I don’t know if someone else has a Thought! But anyway you can probably very the tip and Shaft sound anyway you like once you get into the pattern

He does say that you can change the cascara pattern. It's with mentioning that he alternates between two patterns when demonstrating at the beginning, sometimes accenting the & of 4,other times not

    • @frankburdodrums8984
      @frankburdodrums8984 4 роки тому +1

You really are supposed to accent ( use shaft ) the cowbell except for the first note of the doubles where you should use the tip. They talk about it for just a few seconds at the beginning but he does what he wants anyway after that.

My playing ability exploded when I discovered Gadd because all of his signature stuff just seemed so naturally musical to me. His technique is also very satisfying to try to emulate.
