- I recently was asked, "If you could only practice one bass drum exercise for the rest of your life, what would it be?" Well, I gave it some serious thought and now you and I are going to work on it together!
Developing your single bass drum speed can be quite a chore, and that's why I love this exercise so much. I can turn it into an independence exercise, or turn into a creative exercise and solo over it. As with any new exercise, take your time and most importantly... fall in love with the process!

Nice video as always Mike! I play a Pearl Redline Eliminator chain drive (Double pedal). I chose it because I wanted a pedal that I could customize its settings to fit my playing, and if my playing changes, I have a lot of options for new settings!
I don’t have a pedal....well...that’s not the whole truth...I don’t even have a drumset
Yeah the truth is harsh...but I basically live in the school drum room and the pedal is a RELIC!
I've gone through many pedals in my years. There's quite a few that I really like. Some older Yamaha, Pearl and Tama from the late 70s and early 80s.
Some of the newer models are really nice too. I don't get along with Axis and Pearl Deamon Drive.
I would love to try a Trick Pro V1 some day.
I mostly use DW5000 and DW9000.
It's been a while... don't even remember the model lool. But its a Pearl double pedal. I'm a little of metalhead, but since two or three years ago I decided to develop other styles, groove, flow, and of course single pedal strength/speed. Cheers from Portugal, Mike! Happy New Year!
I've been using a Tama Classic for some time now, I got it after the Sonor Perfect Balance I had enthusiastically bought (after seeing a Jojo Mayer clinic, of course) started breaking down at the heel end of the footboard. I did like the action on the PB tho, and was looking for something in that vein but hopefully sturdier and cheaper. I went with the Tama since their hardware is usually very reliable, it had a smooth footboard like the PB and came real cheap, and I must say it has not disappointed me so far. I like the spring tension really loose and I find that most name pedals around seem to start at a tension level which is already too tight for me, which is not the case with Tama pedals (I also like the Iron Cobra for the same reason). Plus I like a pedal that doesn't feel too heavy. I'll admit though that I might try out the newer version of the Perfect Balance, the cheaper, non-foldable one with regular hinges on the footboard that hopefully don't wear out so easily, since I still feel like there's something quite special about that design.
Hello Mike, I'm 14 and started drumming 7 months ago, my dad used to be a drummer and he even was in a band once. And I thought that was the most coolest thing. I started taking interest in drumming when I started to listen to rock bands like weezer, green day, and seeing pictures of my dad drumming. And of course when I tried drumming the first time I wasn't good at all. After my dad taught me how to use the high-hat and snare together I just started following the drum beats of songs I liked and I feel like I've gotten way better then when I started off. But lately my dad has been kinda sick with back pain etc. And hasn't been around to teach me new skills to get better at drumming...I found your video on double stroke exercises and since I had trouble doing those with my left hand I started doing those and gotten better doing them with my left hand since than I've been watching your videos to advance my skills on the drum set. And I'm even thinking of joining jazz band to be their drummer. It would be really cool to have a girl drummer in jazz band! Thank you for your great videos! Happy new year!

Hey, I really like your post. It doesn't matter whether you are a boy or a girl. The attitude is the most important thing and I am under the impression that you are dedicated to drumming because it gives you joy. Can't think of a better attitude. Keep that up and it will make you really good. Also, guys like Mike help, when your dad isn't around. I am nearly fifty now and I wish I would have had youtube back in the day when I started drumming when I was fourteenish.

Such consistently great content. The breakdowns are always grounded in reality and not just glossed over. You can always tell a REAL instructor/clinician from a merely gifted drummer who makes videos. Really well done.

I've been doing a similar exercise with triplets on bass starting with the common RLKK or RLRLKK around the drums and then adding the third kick with the first right while continuing to move around the drums. But I really like yours for controlling the foot because it uses the right hand as a guide for the foot to follow. Definitely adding this to the routine. 🙌

And I never had a sit down lesson with anyone. Just kinda picked up playing at a young age. I still play drums at my local church and have always struggled with bass drum speed. I will use this and hopefully it works for me, Lol thank you Mike !!!

Mike! Killing the editing game and the online drum education game! Let's see how long it takes the other drum lesson channels to start to mimic your style once again. This has been my go to exercise. And the paradiddle-diddle between hand and foot. Thanks for both those exercises!

Nice Mike! I also grew up using a speed king. i actually had a great one. the feel and response of that pedal was never replicated by anything I've played since. I'm now using the new direct drive yamaha pedal. and have previously used the pearl demon direct drive pedal. I think something can be said for the kind of response and feel you get from a compressed spring vs just tensioning it like every other pedal. One exercise I continue to use daily is snare/bass going upward in note groupings. snare/bass. snare snare/bass bass and so on up to as many groupings I can fit in before I get tired while keeping quarters on a cymbal.
Great lesson i'm been needing to work on my Bass pedal technique. I like exercises with a playalongs it helps alot.

Pearl Eliminator strap drive with the blue cam ( the one it came with) bought second hand (foot?) about fifteen years ago. I've got six pedals mostly by Pearl of various vintage, but the Eliminator is the one that I always take to the gig. I've come to the conclusion ,after fifty years of playing, that a pedal is only as good as the foot playing it. Oh and I use the Pearl four way beater felt side only. And I agree with you about the Speed King, used it once and then it kicked about in my garage for about ten years.

Great exercise! I totally agree with you on the DW 5000 pedal. I tried the 9000 and took back after only a few days with it. It’s too easy and doesn’t follow my foot.

Paul, I love them too! Unfortunately, many of them have been “loved” to the point of being tired and squeaky. Vincent Leef of Vitalizer Drums does excellent restorations of Speed Kings, returning them to their full potential.

Hi Mike! I've been playing a DW 5000 for the last fifteen years. I absolutely love it. It's like an extension of your foot when you play it. Very quick to respond and with ease. Nice video to kick off the new year!
I use a 5000 on a set of 1969 Ludwigs and the pedal has to go beyond vertical to contact the head, does yours?
@@rayfabbri3759 I've used mine on a 1994 Mapex and a current Yamaha stage custom birch kit and have not had to do deal with that issue. Could be that it has something to do with the hoop on your Ludwigs. Hope you figure out a solution for that! I've had an issue with trying to hook up my Pearl pedals on the Yamaha kit. So far only a Yamaha or DW pedal works with this kit.
Rich thanks for the input. I’ve been playing these ludwigs since 1969. I’ve been using the 5000 pedal for about 8 years. I have been asking people about this to see if anyone else has the problem. I didn’t want to cannibalize the hoop with a grinder but it appears that it’s the solution.
If you look at Mikes it hits the head when it’s vertical mine goes about 10 degrees beyond vertical. Thanks.
@@rayfabbri3759 you're welcome. Wish I had a way for you to correct that problem without taking a grinder to the hoop. Maybe look for a substitute hoop that will fit your kit so that you can preserve the original. Also check out rdavidr's channel. He's the Norm Abrams of drum kits. He might have a solution for you. I want to improve on drums this year, so I gave this a go for 20 minutes. Started at 60bpm, 16th notes. Finished with 89bpm! Long way to go!!! Thank you for this!❤

I use the Tama Iron Cobras; I love them for their fluidity and weight; I always do the slide technique in groups of 2/3/4's; with a Paradiddle over the top in my hands :)

Great exercise, can’t wait to try it. I’m using the Pearl Demon Drive pedal. It’s got lots of adjustment and is so smooth to play. The biggest thing I like is that it only has one post that holds the beater. I use a mixture of slide and heel toe technique, so gives me more space to slide my foot. Hopefully see you at the UK drum show this year. I’ve got tickets to see your performance 👍🏻

I love the 3000! In all honesty, it feels very similar to the 5000. The main difference is in the parts that it's made up of. The quality on the 5000 is much better so if you are gigging frequently it's less of a worry that a part might break down on ya :)
I use a Sonor kick Pedal I find it's got a nice loose feel also have a DW double kick which not using much. Love your vids mike always interesting informative you support drumming with passion dude.cheers keep well

Hi Mike. Great lesson! I will practice it with my Speed King.......;) I think I have the same Gretsch kit as in the video. I inherited my father's kit from the '50's with the same blue sparkle, hoops, and unique rack tom tab (or whatever it is). Is your kit also from that era?

I prefer medium high spring tension so all my notes are strong, as a gigging drummer I like a fast rebound but then again I do pull off single pedal triplets playing punk and metal.
I Usually play about 140 bpm if you do that for an hour you'll figure out what's comfortable on the tension to keep the legs from cramping and over working.
Great exercise though your spot on.
I see you go pretty fast on triple bass drum strokes just with one ankle technique. What do you think about drummers who recommend to change technique according the number of strokes on the bass drum ? Is it really smart to do that ? I am skeptical about doing like they say and I d rather keep a one foot technique, but I am at a point where no matter how hard i train I don't improve my speed anymore. I barely go over 160 bpm when I do triplets.

Mike, I really like the sound of your kick drum. I was watching with head phones on and could really hear the sound of the kick. Very nice! I remember the first time I used the DW 5000. I fell in love immediately. I've been using it ever since. I like your new intro. That's not Anika Nilles playing with you on the pad, is it?

If i could chose an exercise to do forever, it would be to match the bass drum with the bass on “Smooth Criminal” by MJ. Super challenging with 16ths on the HI Hat at 120 bpm. But you’ll feel alive once you get it.

Hey MJ, great tip as usual. My current pedal is Ludwig’s Atlas Pro. Why? because it was their newest & “best” pedal at the time of purchase and since I own a Ludwig kit I like to pretend that I have an endorsement deal with them and stick to the same company.
Also is there a scientific explanation why on any given day I can feel like I’m rolling with my pedal playing and on some days it’s as if I never played drums before?

Great video and advice! I remember trying to learn "The Prisoner" from Iron Maiden and in the intro at the beginning he does this rapid 4 beats in the beat and it seemed impossible!
