      +James Johnson: yo James, I LOVE the guitar, I have axe's, amps, pedals you name it but my left hand has arthritis creeping in...sometimes I have to stop playing and pull my fingers apart...but I am determined to learn electric "slide" guitar....funny how things happen, I was in a Good Will store last week and found a full drum set, solid stands, decent drums (some foreign brand but not bad and even had a Sabine ride: the thing is drums was my first calling: in 70's had a set of Lud's then a double set of Premier's...so now I have another set no hand problem!....But I still wanna but that guitar nut...!

      +James Johnson Fair play, mate. I had a mild stroke 9 months ago. Playing drums HAS to be the best therapy. I was terrified I'd never be able to play again. I wasn't half as worried about never walking again than I was about never playing again. They've got wheelchairs if you can't walk: what have they got for you if you can't flick your hi-hats up?

    I like using the "beater technique" where instead if using the pedal, I just kick the beater from the back into the bass drum.

      That's where the term "kick drum" originates! Bands didn't want to pay a snare drummer and a bass drummer, so snare drummers kicked bass drums until Ludwig invented the pedal in 1909 :P

    I'm a left handed drummer, and when I first saw this video which was almost a year ago I started the heel toe with my lead foot (left) and I got it within 10 minutes, then I moved on to my right foot got in within 10 minutes too. Then I put it all together with my double pedals it's sounded awesome and felt so much better then single strokes and I became natural at heel toe. It worked a lot better for me and I use it a lot especially when it comes to higher speeds I feel happy and proud of it. Thanks Jared, Sean, and Dave for your lesson you guys really helped out with my bass drum speed and techniques.

    KK, I'm typing this is 5 years after Jared asked for it. My biggest problem is that I tense up when doing doubles. It works, but takes a lot of effort, and ultimately kills my endurance. Lessons like this help quite a bit (though I'm about to buy Mayer's DVD on foot technique, too). Thanks guys

    Hey, I had a hard time with tensing up when I started playing drums too. I would tense up when I was trying to increase my tempo, which actually had the opposite effect. So, here are some things that can help. 1) Remember that when you lock up something like a bike, that's a way of preventing it from moving. It's the same with your muscles.

    To everyone who has trouble with evening out the speed of their double pedal speed: try rocking your heels from side to side while you play your flat foot strokes. When you have the swinging motion, they act sorta like ghost notes for you to be able to keep time and speed even for your strokes. It may take time to get use to, but its a suggestion for those who have trouble :)

    I know this is possible to do this
    It has to be
    What am I taking about?
    Fast continuous singles and quads with heel toe (single pedal)
    I've seen people do it and can't quite figure it out myself
    Somebody needs to put out a lesson or practice routine to work to a point like that
    Till then, I'll be cluelessly practicing in my garage pissing off my neighbors

    • @BailOutVids
      @BailOutVids 10 років тому +13

      The only thing that helped me build stamina was practice. Just work on playing for longer amounts of time. You'll gain endurance as you play. When I first started I could hardly keep up with 16th notes at like 100 Beats per minute. I got tired really quickly. But it will get easier if you just work on it. It's best to sit down with a metronome and work at increments of 5-10 bpm for a minute or 5 at a time.

      Learn D-Beat, or the "NOFX beat". It's a really simple beat played at very fast tempos, and is the essential punk/thrash drum beat. It requires that you learn heel-toe. Really great to use in songs, or just for practice. It'll be a little hard to grasp at first, but really helps a new drummer develop his kick foot.

    Thank you! this really helped me to develop my slide technique and play it really fast. I find it pretty useful especially for punk rock songs. I actually got tips from all three of you.
    This is very important and it's what helped me the most!: As Jared said you should focus on CONTROL! and speed will come over time. Practice at different tempos make sure that you feel in control all the time. It is important to practice at a slow tempo just to get the FEEL of it.

    I am a pretty new drummer, I don't have much more than 5 or months experience but The Drumeo channel has helped tremendously in giving me things to practice (I love when Jared gives you a beat, even a fundamental technique, and off the bat explains to you that the lesson can be creatively applied and gives some example jams)
    My biggest mistake is focusing on needing a better pedal instead of focusing on the pedal technique
    I thought I needed a lighter beater, so I made one out of some balsa wood and cloth, It didn't change much as I found that I had definitely made a smaller beater, but I needed to add bolts for weight or it was pretty unusable, the end result was something probably exactly the same weight but smaller (I started using a cylinder shaped beater and so that's the shape I made.) I ended up playing around with the spring and it had a much greater effect on my double kick speed. (my pedal is an old tama single that came with the kit, it's a little creaky but some hair ties quieted it up nicely)
    So now I'm gonna watch some more lessons, keep beating guys!

    you guys are awesome! what's most striking is that you guys obviously genuinely enjoy teaching/instructing. as well, your explanations are clear and accessible. in any case, I'm wondering if any of you guys have done a video piece on patterns and/or exercises developed to increase efficiency and control between the kick drum (single pedal) and the floor tom? I suppose one could simply apply the rudiments to the right foot and the right hand, as opposed to playing the rudiments with the right hand and the left hand, but I figured it wouldn't to hurt to ask you guys. many thanks.

    I still practice like this all the time. Drumming is mental, physical, and emotional. Sometimes when I'm in the car I'll drum with my fingers on the wheel, and I'll accidentally rev the engine with a kick-pattern on the gas pedal. Not having a kit will prevent you from the important process of listening to yourself as you play (truly understanding what sound your movements are making), but there is a lot you can learn from just your hands and feet.

    Really great, as I'm still using only 1 kick pedal. I'm seriously thinking of going double, & I reckon all 3 techniques will give me more control to make the bass drum "speak." I'm reasonably fast & smooth on the single ( heel toe ). These 3 techniques will help me in the development of my left foot, PLUS further developing my right foot.

    I've been developing flat foot, after doing slide for ten years. I had to crank up the spring tension and raise the footboard. After your foot gets strong being flat, it's very natural. Very fast. More balanced when sitting. And very powerful. Downside is that you lose volume. I switched to wood beater and removed all drum dampening.

    It bears pointing out that they all have 3 physically different techniques but they are all worth learning for different applications. Sean's flat foot is good for fast singles of consistent volume, Jared's heel toe has some dynamics and in my opinion is the fastest way to get a double stroke because you're not putting as much into the first one, Dave's slide works for power doubles. Learn them all, play them at different parts of your piece for greater dynamics in the music and your playing.

  • @DrGray_Drummer
    @DrGray_Drummer 9 років тому

    First off thanks to all the guys. Each technique seems to work for all of them. When i fist tried it I used the heel toe, and it worked well. Then I saw Jojo use the slide, and thought that was the way to go, so I started working on that, but I could get enough power, nor could I get my foot back in time for the next skp. So I went back to the heel toe, and REALLY wat hed everything Jared did. Within a half hour I was playing the "Bonham triplets" @ 100 BPM. The only thing that I guess I disagree with is "there is no stroke when you first drop the heel" I get one, and finish the second with my toe. When I watch Jared do it, I see him get a stroke in there as well. That part is a little confusing. Jared, are you SURE at faster tempos you're not getting a stroke when you drop hour heel? Otherwise it would be 3 movements to get a 2 stroke skip. Hopefully I get an answer.... Anyways, with heel toe, you dont have to move up and down the bord to get back in to position for the next double. For me heel toe wins hands down. You can do just so much more with it. No offence, but the twitch movements works good for fast singles, but i can't skip doing it, it's very hard to control the tempo, and accuracy, but if you can find the sweet spot on the bored, you can play incredibly fast. Is anyone else getting a stroke when ya drop your heel? Oh, MUCH more power using heel toe for me as well. Thanks for these videos!

I enjoy his technique the most, question: Sean do you allow your heel to rest on the floor at all? My problem is just find that right balance of tension, beater angle/length, seat height, distance from pedals, etc that allow for optimal playing. Whether i'm heal up or down. I would just love to know anyone's tips that have really dialed and experimented with all those variables. I enjoyed how you guys touched on that a little bit.

    I just sat down at my kit and tried some heel-toe (having never tried it) and was just speechless. It took me about 5-10 minutes to get the cradle going and once I did, I was put off because it's almost like a free stroke.
    The double stroke roll is by far my favorite rudiment, so learning to do that on my feet was nice.

    you can actually change the tension on the different pedals, under the right foot pedal near the sides there shud be little knobs that u can loosen or tighten to change the tension.

    If your pedals are moving around, you should make sure you're playing on a drum rug or some form of carper. There are also the little needle like things on the sides of your pedals that you should be able to spin and drill into the carpet so they stay in place.

    Hopefully I can offer some assistance to you Dangrade. Jared, Dave and Sean are pretty hard hitters including myself. They are burying the beater into the drum for more power and a louder sound. This is typically used by rock drummers or and loud genre of music. Softer players like jazz, and church drummers will have their feet flat on their pedal and it allows the beater to bounce off the head for a softer, quieter sound. And it also depends on the tuning of the bass drum as well.

    thank god- finally figured out not only what the technique i use is called but also why so many people tell me i'm wrong- because there's different ways. my biggest struggle would have to be really quick singles with the heel-toe positioning. some songs just call for it, and when you only have one pedal then it can be exhausting. i haven't found a trick for it yet other than just solid practice- but i'll give anyone reading this a heads up- your calves are going to burrrrn.

    Did heel toe for like 8 years and realized it wasn't getting me where I wanted to be. Slide ended up being my new go-to. Been drilling it for close to a year now and I'm not gonna lie, for chops and gospel/fusion stuff that requires a lot of precision along with speed and power, slide technique is the way to go for me. Also y'all, PRACTICE RUDIMENTS BETWEEN YOUR HANDS AND YOUR FOOT. (RKRR KRKK)

    2) Do an exercise where you go from "doing the robot" to pretending that your arm is a wave. I know it sounds silly, but it really works.(the Moeller method works with this) Even though your arm muscles are involved, visualize all the energy as being in your hand. Look at your hand when you visualize this. 3) Warm up before going to a fast tempo.

    I have always used heal toe. I do it kind of different though, on the double stroke I actually hit the first note with my heel and rebound with the bottom part of the ball of my foot. I find the speed is much much faster but it takes some practice to slow down the double stoke at lower BPMs.

    Sean, If you find the time id really appreciate your response.
    1. Are your beaters positioned in the original setup of the pedal or have you adjusted them furthur back or closer to the skin?
    also, are they setup long( to hit the center of the skin or above) or are they a little shorter( little lower than the center of the skin)
    2.How about your springs..Are they tight,loose or mid?
    thanks for your time, IF YOU SEE THIS!!

    My biggest struggle is maintaining stability and keeping my body weight centered while using two feet. I've been playing for 40+ years and up until recently, I've played with a single bass (and single bass pedal) and my hi-hat foot is fairly inactive and keeps me pretty steady. Over the last few years I've been playing around with double bass but my current technique has both my heels off the ground and I'm just balancing on my seat. Considering changing up my technique to have heels on the ground for more time but I know it will slow me down...

    Hey,
    Just wondering, what age do you guys think you peak as a drummer? I've been playing since 13, am now 25, I don't feel I've gotten any better since 21. In face I've really curtailed off lately, haven't been playing in bands, have forgotten a lot of what I used to know.
    What started looking over your videos and am hoping to get better. Do you think its possible if you keep at it, to become a really good drummer in say, your thirties? Or do you have to have learned all the rudiments and stayed disciplined through your teens and twenties in order to become a top drummer that can read music, play all different styles, and pull off advanced techniques and fills.
    Cheers,
    - Intermediate, slightly out of practice drummer

    Hey I've been tryingt to get into drumming. I'm decent with rhythm usually which is why it surprises me that i can't keep rhythm on bass. I think its because of lack of a proper technique. So im here and plan on looking at the boot camp vids too to try to find my niche.

    Jared, love this great video! What about repetitive use injury to the ankle? Have you guys heard of this from drummers? After two years of lessons and beginning to really focus on the bass, I developed pain in the tibialis posterior tendon, which is on the inside of the ankle just behind the knob. This is the same problem as a fallen arch would be and has really hindered my practice. . Is one of the techniques less stressful on the ankle? Thanks for your thoughts.

    I started doing the slide technique just naturally, but one thing I didn't see demonstrated, is greater than doubles, so I triplits & quads ( 3 or 4 beats on a slide) I think I did the 4s just to do it, it could be done as 2 doubles. but the triplet with a single pedal wasn't really possible (for me anyway). I think I picked up the double technique trying to lean "Good Times, Bad Times" by John Bohnam.

  • @speckon
    @speckon 11 років тому

    It's all about practice. You just have to look for yourself which technique you feel most comfortable with. And it IS a long process to get good at drumming and especially on double bass drumming. Keep rockin'! =)

  • @avisupchurch

    The "heel-toe triplet" is similar to a thing I do, but i put the left bass drum note in between the 2 notes of the double on the right... allows for even faster triplets

  • @Runeroev

    Think about your feet as you do with your hands. Pretty much everything yo do with your hands, you can do with your feet. Moeller, double stroke techniques, etc.
    Tap around with your feet on the floor when you are not with your pedals to make the smaller (faster) muscles grow, and they will naturally be combined with the bigger muscles that you are used to using. (btw this works very well for your hands to)
    When you have the smaller muscles going, learning stuff like this becomes much easier.

    I actually use each of these techniques depending upon the need. To me, the "slide" and "heel toe" are essentialy the same thing. Sort of "double stroking" with the feet using the rebound of the beater similar to doing an open roll. The "flat foot" is more like doing a closed roll where you're not using so much "rebound" as you are just double stroking. I'm working on developing a TRUE heel toe bass pedal where your foot sits a cradle. Think of the old "hobby horse" bouncing spring toy. ;-)

  • @mickavellian
    @mickavellian 9 років тому

    My "technique" is effective for me . The heel never sees any action . My foot doesn't rock back and forth. I find that rocking motion is a lot more exhausting than just one straight move UP and down. My toes rest as close to the batter as possible so my movement is linear straight up/down . speed and attack is much faster by just controlling how hard you tow down and from what height. This actually has a basic in physics. You meet the pedal on its way up carrying a little kinetic energy (force of movement) you down force helps you two ways . The pedal coming up hits your toes and it bounces back a little (just as if you threw a rubber ball against the wall. The kinetic energy will reverse when it meets the obstacle of your toes . just keep pushing and you have two kinetic forces working for you Also , different pedal constructions accept a tecnique better than others . The OLD Tama Cobra ( circa 1980 Copeland model) is perfect for my technique, Ludwig is too narrow and does bounce back with enough force to carry any valuable kinetic energy. So theres no bounce when it touches your foot. DW is similar to Ludwig. So the engineering of the pedal has a LOT to do as to what technique works better. Again my TAMA COBRA is the best pedal I've ever used (also the most expensive) built like a tank very smooth straight
    strokes. I gave the Pearl P-930 Demonator (need to get use to its radical different design) a try a few weeks back and it really surprising how smooth that travel is and how little effort you need for an explosive attack.
