      Listen to him on ian Gillan, album Naked Thunder from (i think) the early 90’s.
      It is a great album, good songs and some clever (but sympathetic) drumming.

    What is a "rock" kit? he's used this kit in a thousand different musical genres. People just need to bitch. Tell you what: When some of us can boast the skills and resume of this iconic drumming legend, then have something to say.

    • @LuisRivera-qp3fi
      @LuisRivera-qp3fi 5 років тому

      With all due respect, Sir... This "legend" must be a rock drummer. Look at Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Shelly Manne, Art Blakey, etc, etc. How many drums and cymbals did THEY need? A basic drum kit consists of a snare, a small and floor tom, a bass drum, a crash and ride cymbal, a highhat, and some good sticks. Just ask Donald Fagen or Pat Metheny, and they'll tell you that a drum set shouldn't take up 90% of the whole stage. By the way, all the musicians on this vid have master chops and deserve their due credit, but let's get real here: anyone who desides to cover any song is expected to equal or supersede it. Enough said.I play flute, sax, melodica, and miscellaneous percussion instruments, and I'll assure you: my instruments and l will fit in your glove compartment. Peace. ✌

    Simon is doing a great job. I won't rag on him for having a rock kit. It's the kit he's used to playing. Good job. Ok kids oh much ragging would I get if I arrange a combo version of this head? Gonna try it. Love this song.

    • @G2648875
      @G2648875 8 років тому +4

      What is a 'rock kit' indeed? If you watch a few interviews with Simon he explains a drum kit is rather like a piano in that you get the same number of keys (generally) irrespective of what you play on it. So it is with drums. Why does a snare , two toms and a bass drum constitute a 'jazz' kit or a 'big band' kit? It's utter nonsense predicated on a total lack of understanding of the instrument or its application.

  • @panzerken
    @panzerken 9 років тому +7

    Well guys, not sure what to think here. Do I want to see a guy perform on his signature style kit, or see them taken out of their comfort zone even further and have to play a jazz kit? I say it would be more fun to have them try to do it on a jazz kit. Neil Peart put his ass on the line, and I salute him for the effort.

    • @Tanildes
      @Tanildes 7 років тому +8

      Sorry,but ..Mr.Phillips don't need to prove anything to anyone.
      His brilliant extensive resume speaks for himself.
      Simon recorded ALL STYLES with this signature kit.
      Neil Peart is'' just'' a great rock drummer.
      Stiff,mechanical,no swing.Outside of Rush=nothing happens.
      Even talking bout large kits...Simon's use is incomparable:musical,of course...but...organic,fluid,improvisational....Things that missing in Neil and his same ''preseted patterns'' ,mechanical played all over the Rush catalog.
      See the difference? ;)
      By the way,here there are many clips with Simon displaying swing in small jazz sets :)

      It would have been part of all the drummers endorsement contracts that they should be seen playing their own set of drums and cymbals whilst filming a project such as this. Simon's drum kit and his drumming were (and still are) a powerful promotional tool for selling Tama/Zildjian and he is one of their top salesmen. I would be willing to bet that this particular footage helped to sell a few sets of octobans, gong drums, starclassics, and cymbals. Drum endorsements were still big business at this time. The same was true for Weckle, Gadd, Vinnie, Steve Smith etc etc. They were the biggest drum salesmen of their time.

      If you knew anything about Simon Phillips, you'd also know that he started out playing this kind of music. Rock came later. However, because I'm nothing if not fair. please point me to your own video and back-catalogue of musical achievements so that I can make a reasoned comparison with Mr Phillips.

    If Buddy saw that kit, he'd laugh his ass off. Rightfully so. Get it done on a five piece Simon. This isn't lame fusion nonsense, it's big band.

    • @Sugarsail1
      @Sugarsail1 6 років тому +8

      Louis Bellson frequently played a big kit and he was big band...small kits have nothing to do with the style. The only reason most big band drummers had small kits was because they had to travel and carry it themselves and a lot of the modern hardware to position everything in a big kit hadn't even been invented yet. Buddy wouldn't laugh at all, he'd ask where he could get one.

    • @Vazmusic
      @Vazmusic 6 років тому

      It's a jazz big band. Of course it's supposed to swing. I am not talking about "Swing music". I am talking about whether a musician swings or not. In this genre he does not. He does not really have a jazz feel at all. A great drummer in the fusion or rock thing but this music needs a certain kind of feel.Not putting him down.It's just not his thing. And a lot of musicians who were in this band agree with me.
