Oh wow, this is amazing. Omar Hakim has been under-appreciated for a while, even though he's gotten some appreciation in the last half-decade. I've never seen this clip, updating the classic Buddy tune with a decidedly 80s sound. This takes me back and make me appreciate both Buddy and the musicians who continue to keep his music alive. Sorry I'm several years too-late to this post; it deserves much more attention than it got...
Buddy did not have to compensate with a double bass drum pedal, 12 cymbals, and 2 snare drums. A true artist can exploit minimal equipment in my view. The groove is deep, but Buddy's ran deeper in my opinion.
Robert Cozart Could you say something good about Omar’s playing??? Hello?? He also does some things better on this track than buddy. Waaay better groove and feel to this track but of course nobody could match Buddy’s hands. Also at this time double bass was all the rave and EVERYONE made the move to it. I don’t think Gad did tho!
Additional drums and cymbals are nothing but additional colors with which to paint - no more the tools of compensation than are advanced harmony, modes, or polyrhythms. Shhhh... nobody tell Mozart! He still thinks his way was best, too.
I may think a comparison is a petty exercise...I can learn something from almost any performance, even if it's something Not to do. Enjoy the music and have your faves, such is life,eh?

Sick drumming! Love Omar’s fluidity and cymbal sounds. Making big band cool again!
Omar é um cara fantástico de se ver e ouvir, é expressivo e cativante, musical e técnico, amo ver ele tocar bateria e nossa alma!
Love this drummer,,,how his drumming flows with the music...not forcing anything...with a lot of groove too
Again with King Buzzo on the Sax.
Amazing track by Omar, also Steve Marcus killssss in this
WOW!
Omar's style is not my favorite drumming style, but some of his tricks impress me (here or in Weather Report). He's seem very confident and secure.
Omar!
Mmmmmffffffff!!!!!!!
Very loose and smooth.

Such a meaningless criticism. I dare you to define what "deeper" means
