So you mean you, as a drummer, weren't aware of who Simon Phillips is or the drums he uses? The dude is a stone cold legend in the drumming world.

Eye candy to watch his ambidextrous style, independence of limb, one of the few to incorporate octobans, feet of fury, and 22 years with Toto, taking up an almost impossible gig after the death of Master Jeff Porcaro. I'd say, with all due respect to different musical tastes, Simon is a Top 10 guy at any given time. The triple strokes is a French roll, taught to him through a bet David Paich made that Mike Porcaro could stump him with this movement. Simon lost $20, but gained a move for his bag of tricks. Love the central theme of this solo, which, by no means, was meant to blow everybody out of the room. Simon is a studio ACE, and an absolute gentleman to speak with. Cheers!

Simon did ONE album for Judas Priest. He is NOT a ‘thrash metal’ drummer. He’s played for Toto after Jeff Porcaro died and is known for his work with The Who, Jeff Beck, Mike Oldfield and his own band, Protocol. He had THREE snares, not two…Jesus dude…do your homework. He’s one of the best drummers ever to sit behind a kit.

“Good studio drummer.” Much more than that, definitely an understatement.

the singer in my band gave me Jeff Beck's "There and Back" album for my 27th birthday...at the time I was feeling pretty good about my drumming; got compliments every time I played, but when I heard Simon play "Space Boogie" I realized that I had a long way to go to get there...Simon is a drum god and his work with Toto was nothing short of brilliant! He's a "hall-of-fame" drummer if ever I've heard one!

Simon has played for MUCH MORE than Judas Priest. Judas Priest should have been at the bottom of the prestigious positions he has had.

Let’s try Toto for about 20 years. The Who, Jeff Beck, etc, etc. Simons Been playing since he was 5years old with his dad, who was a professional band leader. His approach to double kick transcends any Rock style drummer. He produces, he engineers, records. His pet project and baby is Protocol, which he has numerous albums snd tours the world.
He has three snares, one also to the left. He has many unique ways of setting up and playing his set. Check out his unique set up with the hihat, which is cut, clamped, and played at an angle. He is truly ambidextrous.
    Uh hummm, MASTER studio drummer!

  • @apeistheplace
    @apeistheplace Рік тому +17

Well, he did one album with Judas Priest as a session player in 1977. But he played with TOTO for over 20 years after Jeff untimely death. And you didn’t mention his amazing work with Jeff Beck, or his work with Mike Oldfield. And maybe more importantly, what he’s been doing since. That is to say his solo project Protocol 1-5, where he’s been playing with some of the best musicians on earth!
So come on now. Even if you don’t know squat about the drummers you are “reviewing”, at least read the “whole Wikipedia page” …
… and not a word about that “doubles part” which is performed “clockwise & counterclockwise” with the left and right hand. That’s the difficult, “mind blowing” and impressive part: try it! 😎
Edit: coincidentally I uploaded an “easy tutorial” on clockwise/counterclockwise yesterday: go for it (it’s a great mind melting exercise) ✌🏻🤩⬇️

So true. Hes got this basic loop he works around the whole time. Its almost like he hits that snare from begining to the end on the same point in each 4 beat loop. Scuse my terminology. Im not a musician but just loves good music and has good friends in the music bussines.

Simon's not a thrash drummer. He does a lot of progressive jazz with his own band Protocol. Check out his work with Mike Oldfield, Jeff Beck, Hiromi, 10 cc, Stanley Clark, and others. I've seen a lot of great drummers in my life, but nobody touched Simon's performance I saw with Mike Oldfield in '84. The dude is a master showman as well as technician.

How embarrassing that Fulton wasn’t aware of SP and didn’t even bother to do his homework. Even more lame is that he’s not even aware that Simon is playing open handed technique, plus is one of the finest players in the business.

First saw Simon with Toyah in 1982, a few clinics in 83, 85 and 86, Pete Townshend in 85, The Who in 89, Jack Bruce in 91 and a few more clinics since. Living legend and awe inspiring. In terms of studio albums I'd recommend There and Back - Jeff Beck, Rocks Pebbles and Sand -Stanley Clarke, Smallcreeps Day - Mike Rutherford, Crises - Mike Oldfield, Warrior Rock - Toyah, Russ Ballard - Russ Ballard, White City - Pete Townshend, The Buffalo Skinners - Big Country. and so many more.

It's not just the bands he's,played with it's the bands and artists who have asked him to work with them on recordings and performances. I'm not going to list them.
Look at Toto most of the founding members have been session musicians and so is Simon.
When Jeff died he left a big hole in TOTO. Simon, in my view stepped in and delivered. Best way to judge or critique his work? Just listen the drums tell the story!

Great Drummer. He's left handed so you can see how he applies different strokes using his left hand. He was the Who's drummer after Keith Moon died. He was Toto's drummer for over 12 years.

In an interview (drumeo i recall) he said that he's not leftie, but he trained to be one since two of his favourite drummers were, and also because he wanted to use more toms, which caused lower hihat position, which caused that he could not play cross handed so he just trained to be BOTH handed :D which is pretty effing imperssive. Also he realised that in playing left handed ride and hihat he can include toms into grooves much more easily.

    • @jensekberg4524

Simon Phillips is one of the worlds most reowned allround drummers that can do the most. Legend will be a fair understatememt, and I am really surprised that you did not know much of him, before making this reaction.
To be fair, this performance is not one of his most mindblowing, in my opinion. There are lots on YT to explore about him.
Presently he is working with Darwin, a progressive rock band with Mohini Dey and Derek Sherinian. You should check it out.
