By far my favorite version of this song was played by Simon...hands down. Especially that middle part and that wicked solo...I mean, the guy’s riding a China ! Love it! Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant!
@@Frip36 yes, he's hitting things with sticks & some of them are cymbals & one type of cymbal that he's hitting or "riding" is a cymbal known to drummers as a China cymbal. Fyi: crash cymbals, including splash cymbals, are generally used for accents while ride cymbals are generally used to keep time, but there are no strict rules; you can ride a crash, you can crash a ride, you can even ride a China!
Almost three decades later, this is still the shit. The only thing missing is a shot of Neil reacting in the booth. I don't know where Simon's session fell during tracking but it speaks volumes that this wound up being the opening track on the first "Burning..." album. I picture Peart the Perfectionist nodding his head and thinking, "Yup. This is gonna work," with a big smile on his face. Too bad we only got two albums out of the effort but I'm still happy to have the two.
As someone else have previously said this isn't a competition to be the best, it's about how different drummers Interpret a particular piece of music. For those of you who seem to like to play down an individual's efforts all I can say is I'd really like to see you take up challenge drumming to this. Video it, upload it , let's see how much better you are ..... Respect to all , that's a true musicians mind set!
There are a lot of people out there with "talent envy." They will never have talent so they try to make themselves on par with those who do by tearing down their work. Your response is like mine. I say, post your vids, so we can judge them! They never do, it's glorious!
I can count the number of times that I've seen online trolls post their own video that tops what they just attacked. Zero. Harsh critics that are NEVER a fraction as capable of doing this as the artist they are bashing is.
True, I just think the tempo is a little slow. Not hearing dragging in the time, I just thinking the whole thing could of started faster. I’ve played this song before with a big band but don’t have it recorded. I have other tunes w the big band on youtube tho.
Does anyone remember back in the 1990's when Mark & Brian (they have a star on the sidewalk) Used Simon's version? They had this as their show themesong. Simon is NO slouch... It wasn't a race to the end like Buddy taxed his musicians. I enjoy hearing all the notes... I could memorize that beautiful Tenor sax's solo-awesome
Watch this everyday since i saw it. Simon kicks balls on this, and the sax....drum/music porno 🎶🎸🎼......fantastic studio sound 🎼fantastic pink drumset. I want one ?
Dancing Men is supposed to follow a rock groove (I've read the sheet music and performed this back in high school in a vein similar to Phillips). I'd say he nails it while Chambers is a show-ier version.
Well said. Chambers is a Funkasaurus flamethrower and a brilliant one at that but this song is not meant to be that. His was amazing in its own way but I like this version much better.
I agree. I prefer Buddy's version and the sound he gets from the drums. Simon beats the drums playing into them but Buddy lets the sound open up and then Buddy swings. However, this is a brilliant interpretation and totallly valid.
Control and energy. Maybe not swung how some people want but as far as energy and control go he is right there with Buddy on this one. Nice work in my opinion.

Teetom - You are mistaken with you rude comments about NP selecting this song as track one. Buddy himself chose it as track one on the Live at Ronnie Scott's album. It was an homage to BR. Do a little research next time.
Some of today’s top drummers have played this with the Buddy Rich band. Very different styles, both playing and drums. Buddy just used 4 drums...forget the towel tom.
Only listen to this if you want to hear it played way too fast. The Phillips version lets the harmonies sit for long enough while still playing around everything.

The guy is just a walking metaphor for drumming brilliance.
And of course, wailing away on Tenor Sax......the Great Steve Marcus.
The drumsolo and the interaction with the bass player is fenomenal!
Who is the bass player?

Dave Stahl on lead trumpet = BEAST MODE.
Thums up for that great bassplayer
the best version
The "party in Simon's pants" starts at 5:03. :) God, I love this.
Simon at his best period... incredible
SENSACIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!
Phenomenal job! Love his interpretation of this song!

Chambers version is nervously fast in the BR memorial concert '89. Good comment, agree.

I love this song espicially the drummer man imma drummer myself but wish i can play like that great video

Love Buddy's version but this sits nicely in the pocket and is full of drumming excitement.

Great BR cover! Great energy. My favorite SP video....
THE BEST DRUMMER EVER!!!!!
Only Si Phi can swing on a China and make it groove LOL!
A very Big One so its probably easier ti swing on It but ...I agree with you !!!
Thos are some big china cymbals lol. Simon Philips is amazing!
Tremendous performance!! What’s left to say ?
Great version!
Thanks! But it's kinda weird that you are able to watch this video because it has been blocked due copyright problems with WMG.
very cool my friend! thumbs UP!
Awesome! Thanks for posting!
Drumming is good. Song sounds like the opening to cheezy 70's sitcom.
Simoooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmn
4:52 ....dang!
I like the trombone solo at 3:20
Nice ! I'm heard Simon on Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford stuff in the past.
@ Phil K.. well said.. One players tribute to the man who set the bar for everyone else after him who ever aspired to sit down behind a kit..
Simon at his absolute peak. And he wasn't happy with this take....
awesome!!!
i love the energy from this song, is one of my favorites from the buddy rich tribute cd. thanks for posting it
"Burning for Buddy" performance👍
Thanks so much for sharing!:)
I like the high notes.
最高!
Control and energy. Maybe not swung how some people want but as far as energy and control go he is right there with Buddy on this one. Nice work in my opinion.
Love the great cracking snare...what brand ?
I always wonder what the originals in Buddy’s band think of the other drummers.
Entire kit is a maple Tama Starclassic, 6.5" deep snare (I believe).
hmm i am watching it agian right now with out any problems :S
I believe this was from the Burning for Buddy sessions organized by Neil Peart?
Anyone know what snare he’s using,
Great sound.
Wow
El mejor of the world
A bit understated, but good.
This is nice :)
good video :)
@MaliciousPandaProduc Sounds cool! If you have any footage of it, let me know ;)
Okay, nice then! I hope it stays this way.
Simon is crazyly good on the kit. James Hetfield look alike at 6.06 aha
@siti1ca They brought in Simon Phillips man. He's got to earn his pay with a pure drumming section. I'm sure that's what it is.
@libel Steve Marcus. One of the originals to the Buddy Rich Big Band...
@Eperaza120 haha yeah, just a little bit
Creo que Simón es extraordinario pero en esto de jazz daría mu favorito en estos temas Dave weckl
Witch album???? Please
@MaliciousPandaProduc Is the tenor sax any good?
@foamysqueak11 Amazing.
Does anybody know what mouthpiece the tenor is using?...
More Epic than the same epicness
I didn't know Kramer played the drums

woooooooooo, thats all i say....
@joshkosh95 James Hetfield...the guitarist / singer? -_-
who is the sax player?
Is more groovy with Mr. Simon en Dennis. speed is not everything but the swing;)
You are hating. Dennis can play down to Simon, Simon cannot play up to Dennis. Dennis played this how he wanted.
@@kcorpora1 Soory to say. Butt NO
This version is a reasonable 134 BPM. Check out this version by Buddy at 157 BPM: ua-cam.com/video/cmnsN6RhF0M/v-deo.html
Is he left handed?
Arn Holland Simon started out right handed and then learned how to play left handed. As a consequence he’s fully ambidextrous now. Very cool indeed.
Amazing player…but I can’t figure out if he’s playing left handed or right handed. 😂

When you don't have talent, there's room for a bigger kit.

so much for phillips. stahl on lead trumpet nails it as usual.
I just didn't like all the extra lip trill, shaking from the lead trumpet I like a strong high d at the end but that's just me.
I don't think it was intentional.
A double D is fucking high as shit.
Plays very well, but wouldn’t he be hard to see behind all those drums and cymbals on stage.
It's a nice effort for a rock drummer. He's way to heavy on sticks. Backbeat should be more subtle. Just my opinion.
poor bassist's solo completely cut out of the video, poor guy.
Simon beats em all
NICE!!!!!.... But I like the Dennis Chambers version better
Only listen to this if you want to hear it played way too fast. The Phillips version lets the harmonies sit for long enough while still playing around everything.
@@Mocityspirit You should specify "this" in your first sentence. Are you saying Chambers or Phillips is playing too fast. I suspect Chambers.
Here’s Buddy doing it: ua-cam.com/video/cmnsN6RhF0M/v-deo.html
Dennis Chambers blows this song away!
Yes..., but he’s not Buddy Rich
