As has been stated many times, Neil got the job done well in this performance. It may not be as fancy as an interpretation by a seasoned jazz drummer, but the swing is tight and the backbeat is strong. What I love most about this performance is Neil's demeanor. It pisses me off that the other rock drummers on this record think they are honoring Buddy by playing rock with some horns. Buddy was a jazz musician; honor him like a jazz musician.
Versatility is the key to any musician .. And Neil Peart proves it.

As one of the best drummers, lauded by millions of fans (many drummers themselves), Neil shows his humility by knowing it's not really his 'thing', but he does it anyway! With a smile! He truly seemed like a good guy.
Love the silent, 'one, two, three, four' coming out of the solo at the end!

Neil himself said he was disappointed with his performance in this (He talks about it in his book Travelling Music), although I'd hardly call this a bad performance; he put his heart into it and truly appreciated and admired both the genre and Buddy Rich. It should be mentioned that he got lessons from Gene Krupa after this album was made and it changed his playing style drastically.

Reading the notes and even playing a piece note for note, does not mean you will get the same feel. Neil and Buddy - 2 great drummers, but 2 very different styles.
Gregg Bisonette doing in a mellow tone is the best on this album
this is when neil first started doing the jazz music so of course he wont swing as well as buddy, but now if he plays it they probably sound almost identical
I finally just now really internalized what a profound effect on the overall sound that the drummer really has.
You have to remember that Neil is a fish out of water here - it's a tribute, not a note-for-note cover. Playing like this goes against all his entrenched rock abilities. The crossover goes both ways too; few jazzers who could rock out a stadium or come up with accompaniments to Alex and Geddy's compositions. RIP has meaning, you know!
The people complaining here might be jazz fans, but I doubt any of them are jazz drummers. Certainly not great ones. I'll be happy to be proven wrong. However, only great jazz drummers have the right to critique Peart. Everyone else can STFU.

Neil Peart amazing drummer, I personally think he's at the top of rock but I guess jazz isn't his thing and that's all fine because everyone has their own style of drumming so one is not more successful than others unless they are in the same music genre plus it's not a matter of fame but skill and I think jazz is definitely harder than rock but rock and roll is still good.

@plangentmusic so holding a buddy rich tribute - you can call him a bad jazz drummer? his solidity comes from his amazing jazz drumming abilities - all of his solos and what not. his jazz abilities are what allow him to play with such great technique, creativity, and sense of time.

@humanity6fl9 lol. As a matter of fact, yes! Hey, I like Neil. He just doesn't have a great feel for this type of music. And even if I couldn't play jazz, people can make observations. You can dislike something you can't do better. But when it comes to swinging, yeah, lots of guys who aren't nearly as famous as Neil can do it better. I give him credit though for trying. But he is a great rock drummer.
i think peart is the only one who played on the albums WITHOUT his regular set-up. if he'd played with his rush equipment this would have sounded very different.
I see Greg Gisbert and Scott Wendholt in the trumpet section ... who are the other two trumpet players?
Im not sure when this was. But neil can play jazz, this may have been before studying with freddy grubber. Others are better. of course. but he is getting the job done
@humanity6fl9 Look up plangentmusic jazz or plangentmusic surf. They are recordings from CD's, not vids of me playing live. On the jazz vids I'm playing drums and bass. On the surf stuff I'm playing all the instruments.

@plangentmusic I am backing this dude up on this. I love Neil. He is in the list of drummers you refer to by only their first name and people know who you are talking about (Vinnie, Buddy, Terry, etc) but since I first heard him "swing" I cringed at how straight sounding it was. His swing feel is tight, straight and heavy. Again, I LOVE Neil's work and have tons of respect for him but swinging is not his forte. Just listen to Buddy's Cottontail after Neil's and you'll hear it.

@shed412 I'm pretty sure he wouldn't sound identical to Buddy Rich, which is fine, because only Buddy Rich sounds like Buddy Rich and only Neil Peart sounds like Neil Peart.
I found it interesting that right before the fills at the end he switched from traditional grip to match grip. Shows that this style of playing is still not that comfortable for him.

I find it funny a bunch of jazz fans are complaining that the feel wasn't strict enough.
+steveexplodes I DJ for a jazz radio program and jazz fans hate it when rock musicians can nail standards. It absolutely infuriates them. Jazz is about expression, not following a list of rules. The fact is, he's playing right in the pocket and putting his own spin on it. I feel like Buddy Rich would have been impressed.

You avid Neal Peart “fan boys” are truly “groupies” or better yet “rent boys”. Wake up. Think critically. Embrace the dialectic of enlightenment. Peart is clearly and utterly out of his depth. Notice that he switches from a “traditional grip” to “matched pair” mid track. This is the epitome of a rock drummer “trying” to play jazz. Not fluid, no rhythm and zero swing. Peart is a solid rock drummer for Rush style music, period. He’s just not versatile. Watch the DVD “Burning For Buddy”. Peart states that he and some of the other drummers practiced and rehearsed for weeks. He then adds that Billy Cobham comes in and offers to “sight read” whatever they want him to perform. He then does his track in one take. That’s true versatility.
Wow, this guy has no feel for this music AT ALL..... I mean for someone that's revered as such a "Drum God" , he's not exactly a kid here just starting out... Also, that Bonham-ish solo at the end was laughable...

You're right though, I went through my jazz history studies this last week, and I listen to the original version of this standard and duuuuude, the old school drummers (bebop) were beasts, they also had way more ghost notes and fluidity to their game!
