Just gotta do more. The only way to get good at it is to do it. If you struggle with form on a pull up because of weight, rest (don't use it to push off) your foot on a chair or something underneath the pull up bar to ease some of the weight. Do that till you feel you don't need the chair and just do normal pull ups. It's not rocket surgery, it's just hard work. You can do it.

    Detailed list:
    1. cardio
    - in long sustained efforts at lower heart rate
    - aerobic exercise in which you can still talk: running, swimming, biking
    - 2x 30 min per week
    - helps offset the decline of mitochondria with age
    - in short bursts of high effort
    - biking, rowing machine, HIIT
    - 1-2x a week for 3-8 minutes
    - keeps up the VO2 max (how much O2 you can absorb during exercise)
    2. Strength training
    - build muscle & bone density & maintain it
    - invest in your retirement early on because in old age you won't build the muscle back
    - carrying weights for long distances, grip strengths, pulling motion
    3. Strong stability: having control over your body
    - prevents falling in old age --> you can to be more active instead of recovering from injury
    - learn the perfect form for every exercise, correct your posture, add flexibility motions to exercise
    - start slow
    4. Caloric restriction
    - eat light meals but don't under nourish yourself
    - prevents cancer & maintains metabolic health
    5. Increase of protein intake
    - maintain muscle --> enables you to be more active into old age
    - rule of thumb:
    - 1g protein per day for every lbs of body weight or 2.2g protein for every kg of body weight
    6. good relationships
    - having long-term friends and supporting community, having long-term partners is key to your emotional health
    - litmus test: How satisfied are you in your relationship(s)?
    (7. sleep)
    - it's essential to start with these habits early in life in order to offset the old age diseases:
    - cardiovascular disease
    - cancer
    - neurodegenerative disease (e.g. Alzheimer)
    - diabetes

My grandfather was like this. At 80 years old, my brother (4 at the time) could sit on his back while he was doing push ups. He used to do a max set of 60-70 several times a day. He and his brothers would chop down trees, spit roast entire animals over open fire, do random shit around the house all day, and never run out of energy. In his 50s, at just 5’7, he could stand at the base of a staircase and jump up 7 steps. We have a video or him doing this. I remember at 88 years old, he could pick 6 year old me completely off the floor from my shirt collar with one hand. He had the most ridiculous grip strength you could ever imagine. As a fun little challenge, he used to grab people by the wrist and say “try to get out” and it would be impossible. He was just a freak of nature. We have endless stories in my family of him doing ridiculous things.
If it weren’t for the botched back surgery he got in his early 90s, I think he would have lived much older than “just” 100. The surgery immediately had him walking with a cane and hobbled over. I miss him every day.

From what I've learned over the years, one of the most important aspects of it is to stay active, stay curious. I work in an industry where I run into a lot of people who work in construction or do mechanical work. In the position I meet a lot of people who are not professionals, but who like to work on projects, whether its something around the house, or just working on their car. Their minds are actively trying to solve problems, and they have a purpose, which is to finish their project. I knew a man in his eighties who built his own back porch, and I regularly run into people who are well past 75 and still working on something. While I know people my own age who have no desire to do anything with their off time but watch television, and who seem much older than they are.
There is an old saying that basically goes the heart is happiest when the mind and the hands work together. Jay Leno has said this often. What does he do? Constantly works on cars. He can hire anyone he wants to do whatever work he needs to do, but he still likes to work on cars.
William Shatner is in his nineties, but still speaks like someone much younger. I was listening to an interview with Brett Spiner (famous for playing Data on TNG) who is friends with Shatner. He said that Shatner is just a very curious person, and always wants to learn about something new, always has his nose in a book.
Hopefully I can stay physically and mentally active as I get older.

Both my parents made it to 100. Unfortunately, mum had dementia but dad was as sharp as a tack. He would often get asked, "What's your secret?" He got a bit sick of answering by the end. He was an intelligent man and knew that he probably didn't know the answer. His answers would change but would generally include the factors mentioned in this video. The one factor that was always included was, "A good, supportive, loving wife."

My father is 97. He is a voracious reader, and he remembers everything he reads. He's had a-fib for many years but handles it well. I think his primary key to longevity is that he eats consistently, never snacked, the desserts he eats are always very small portions. The most he's ever weighed was 175-180, the least was 165. Of course, these days he's down to 140 simply due to age. He thinks his longevity if from genetics. He has a brother who is 94... 2 other brothers passed away in their mid 80's, but they smoked.

Dude reading is huge. Everyone should get into the habit while young to read minimum of one hour a day. Preferably non-fiction. Imagine over 40 years. Thats 14,600 hours reading. Over 60 years that’s 21,900 hours. Compare that to a non reader who might read 10 books in their life but only to pass a college course. Imagine the insane intelligence difference. It’s a whole other universe. Plus it prevents dementia and all those brain diseases.

Excellent video!! I am 40 now and make sure to engage all of my body almost everyday. Doing so is redundant, but seeing this is definitely inspirational. I truly feel like I am back in my early 20s after I workout. Actually, I was more stagnant during my early 20s than I am now. I was sitting, doing a bunch of learning and work, and feeling under-circulated. Now I do about 64 cartwheels every 2 days and run about 4 miles in hilly terrain. It makes for a full-body routine. I like to cold plunge in the shower, too. All together, I think and feel better every time I do these things.

Lack of proper fat and collagen in his underlying tissues is not facilitating his skin to attach to muscle tissue. Go check out pics of Jack Lalanne in his 90’s … way different tissue attachment underlying his musculature.
With that said, Mikes calorie restriction is probably allowing for him to utilize his remaining muscle mass to his overall weight as best possible.
So rather than beat a “dead horse” over the protein recommendation … eat the dead horse with a good amount of fat.
This is the most under utilized source of quality protein in the USA. Wild horses and burros often have a negative impact on the quality of their environment. Degradation of pasture and high desert habitat is often severely affected. These animals should be harvested under supervision and utilized as a protein source. Other countries eat horse and burros as well as cows. Why are cows considered less intelligent than horses is beyond me. I’ve seen some really smart cows and some ornery dumb horses. Both would be best served as steaks and roasted.
I’ve digressed. Keeping a diet free of processed foods looks like one of the tricks here. Single item foods rather than most anything packaged and having a nutrition label is a good direction. Adios to sugar, seed oils and artificial sweeteners as well.
Great video for its comprehensive look at this 100 year old guy and his wife as well.
An old friend of mine years ago got married at 87. I asked him, how was that going for him. He mentioned a few things about companionship and doing things together. He closed as he walked away… hey, there’s still lead in the old pencil too! He outlived her and passed in his mid 90s.

Mike was a regular visitor to Sharon Woods, a park in Cincinnati. He was there to run. His Nickname became Marathon Mike, because he was always running. Good to see him still going, I've missed him at Sharon Woods.
