  • Godzilla minus one was the best movie of 2023, to be fair it didn’t have much competition this year. Whats noticeable about Godzilla Minus one is that this is probably the first time a non western country has created a blockbuster spectacle movie with the special effects to back it up. If you ever wanted to see a larger than life action movie or a period piece your options were limited to Hollywood and Hollywood alone. That time is coming to an end. Visual effects are now getting streamlined to the point that Hollywood no longer has a monopoly over larger than live movies. Now they have to compete with foreign country's and soon hopefully indies.

This movie absolutely blew me away! Not only was the Godzilla action sequences incredibly intense and suspenseful while being a spectacle of fun, but the characters they developed in the story were actually enjoyable and well fleshed out. I was enthralled the entire time. It is one of my favourites of the year! Great review, and keep up the great content 👍.

I saw this movie for the 3rd time this weekend, and I'm beyond irritated that once again, it made this 5 year old Godzilla fan in a 56 year old body cry in a Godzilla movie. THERE'S NO CRYING IN GODZILLA! Seriously, this movie is a triumph of story telling and cinematography. There were so many palpable emotional moments. Koichi's rage as he falls to his knees, realizing Noriko is gone, looking up at the monster that he could have killed when the problem was manageable, is gut wrenching. You can feel his anguish and sense of helplessness as he screams in futility at the monster. I have tried to like Legendary's roar, but it misses the target and pales in comparison to the classic roar. I love G-1's roar, which brought back some of the deep resonant growl of the original '54 version. My first viewing was in IMAX and the roar was absolutely epic, shaking the theater and resonating in your chest. Great stuff that this 5 year old absolutely loved.

People saying that the Japanese have caught up.... The Japanese have had their own respective film industry since a century ago. Even in their postwar devastations, giants like Kurosawa, Ozu, Kinugasa, etc. rose to influence many filmmakers abroad. Of course, Hollywood has been the world's mega-center of movies for almost forever, and even the success of Godzilla -1.0 owes partly to Hollywood's (Disney's) self-destruction, that's for sure. But the presence of Japanese cinema has been felt even in Hollywood for more than 60 years now, it's just that Americans were reluctant to acknowledge the fact, be it through ignorance or arrogance.
And it's all the more refreshing to see so many people coming out and praising Godzilla -1.0 this time around. It shows how much people have come out from their older shells. The fact that Americans are enjoying a Japanese movie with only subtitles is equally astonishing to the world. Many Europeans used to joke about Americans not being literate enough to read subtitles in time. Proud Americans have proven those snobs to be wrong. Such a time has passed!

A Big Shout Out and Thank You for those who attended these viewings! I viewed it three times along with my plush godzilla ( he was a big hit, and why not - he's very handsome ).
I won't go into a rant on how much I love this movie, only to say that I truly felt empathy toward the characters, and, yes...love. This movie has stayed with me, and that hasn't happened to me in a very long time.

I enjoyed it I also think it was movie of the year still can't believe its budget was $15m but I agree it was a lot more impressive as it was lower than that the director wishes it was that high. I was the only one that clapped at the end not sure if I could see a sequel (no spoilers don't worry) but holy shit Godzilla is a lot scarier then in those Monsterverse movies and Hollywood need to take note of this movie on how to do storytelling, how to sympathise with humans than the kaiju and the titans 11/10

It's so well written that even those that would be considered antagonists are understandable. The woman watched all three of her children burn to death. Is her reaction to Koichi justified? No, but it's completely understandable and when she puts it behind her and basically becomes a mother figure for their cobbled together family it's even more satisfying.
You could spend hours discussing this film and keep finding more and more to enjoy. This film is about healing and the dangers of not allowing oneself to heal and every character is essential. This would be a movie of the year contender no matter what year it came out.

I find this comparison with American Godzilla funny, because it seems like people are filling these films as if Hollywood had abandoned everything that Godzilla was before, whereas Toho has already done this, like, being a hero, anti-hero, villain, victim, Godzilla has been all of this in Japanese films, from the Showa era, Hensei, Millenium, recent short films, and the fact that Toho is enjoying it and even has total respect for the Monsterverse only makes this situation even funnier, because both are lagendary ( Americans) and Toho (Japanese), are doing the same thing currently, reliving the past with current technology, the only difference is, that the Americans are reliving the showa hensei Millenium era etc., while the Japanese are reviving the solo films, serious and heavy that if you compare it to the entire franchise is made up of 5 films or more, I know that the script and the humans (some at least) are very weak, but that doesn't make the film rubbish (at least for me ), especially GvK in which the proposal, the focus of that film was the obvious one in the title, and they delivered, what will come in this next film may not have a serious tone like the one in 2014 or the minus one, but perhaps for the The story of monsters, from Kong's perspective, can be quite heavy, I mean, have you seen the origin of this Kong? It's sad man, so let's not go all out and say that the next film is going to be silly just because Godzilla is doing the same thing he did 40 films ago, running. (detail, I'm not saying that minus one is bad, quite the opposite, it's Oscar worthy, but you know, it seems to have gone to people's heads a lot)

Godzilla running: doesn't work (even though he already did it 30 films ago)
Godzilla moves nimbly fast as hell: works perfectly
This doesn't make much sense, in a way you can get a sense of size, it's just not the focus

It only shows that we don’t need Hollywood as much as we did back then - many other people are starting their own movie businesses worldwide and Hollywood is slowly realizing that. It is no longer the go-to place for filmmaking.
