If you think Minus One's CGI is better, you are high asf. The cost to make it is a clear indication of quality. Toho did a better job by putting gay men in rubber suits.

I'm from Poland, and our cinemas did not plan to air Godzilla MInus One, but after stunningly good reviews it got one cinema network decided to air it after all, for one week. At this point Godzilla's airing was prolonged for the fourth week and people still coming to see it.
I had difficulty getting tickets the first time.

That's so amazing! I just saw it the 2nd time here in the States, but this time the "Minus Color" version, and I'm hoping to see that version another time later! This movie was so fucking amazing. I thought "Barbenheimer" was going to be the "peak" of 2023, but HOLY FUCK did Toho come in HOT and blow everything else out of the water just before the year ended! But now they started their 2024 strong, and I'm hoping the next Godzilla vs Kong will still enjoyable enough (since I don't see it being anywhere near as great as Minus One was).

My favorite part in the movie was the line that the technician said to the main koichi which was to live, if you watch the movie we saw how koichi was ashamed to be alive and couldn't bear the shame or guilt of not fulfilling his job as a suicide pilot, that he chose to live without happiness not commenting fully to his role as his new adopted daughter not accepting her calling him dad, and not marring his girl who he loved and knew loved him, all because he believed he wasn't worthy of happiness and to be alive so when the only surviving member of the first godzilla attack say live to koichi was just power, which was telling koichi its ok that you are a live and you can find happiness and live, just beautiful.

The boat scene was a crazy tension builder in IMAX and it's a shame you didn't get to see it in it. What makes the scene so impactful is that in the absence of music, the scene is 'scored' by the sound of the siren going, and the water crashing on both Godzilla and the boat. A controlled lack of music, deciding when silence fits a scene better than with music, is still something that western media struggles with in my opinion.

That most Westerns can’t relate to Koichi is really prevalent, and it shows whenever they call his episodes as “melodramatic” or “overacted.” It really shows how rare it can be to find someone who understands what it’s like to have PTSD. US veterans and some prior servicemen can probably really relate.

    • @jiminychristmas123

Yep my dad fought in Vietnam and had horrible ptsd that he suffered from for decades. I thought they did Koichis ptsd very well. Especially his inability to let go of the past and the part where he wakes up from the nightmare and asks if he really did die in the war and this was all his dying dream, oh my god, that shit hit home. Also, don’t want to get too spoilery, but what is said to him in the final scene gave me chills.

Agreed. My uncle survived Vietnam and had that part of his life hidden away in trauma. When I tried to discuss G-1 with others at work who'd also seen the movie they commented on the same of Koichi's "dramatics" and called Koichi a "coward". I was offended and felt the need to compare my uncle's PTSD to explain Koichi. That shut them up. Some people are just so boastful and dumb.

Just got back from seeing the movie and oh man... I'm a very happy chappy! I'm not a hardcore Godzilla fan by any means, before this movie I'd only seen the 1998 Godzilla and the 2014 Godzilla but I heard a lot of good things about this movie and I'm so glad I saw it! It absolutely lived up to the hype! It's also my first time actually seeing Godzilla on the big screen in a cinema which is kinda strange but hey, better late than never! For me though this movie was excellent, it gets the balance right with just enough Godzilla destruction, a simple yet interesting/engaging plot and actually giving you a cast of characters that are like-able, you care about and want to see live! It actually gets a bit heavy and emotional in a couple of scenes which surprised me a bit too. Again without getting too into spoilers, there's that one scene where Shikishima just breaks down in front of his not-wife and it got to me a bit! It really made me empathise with him and made me want to root for the lad even more to get the redemption he was looking for!
Another thing that I love about this movie is that it's only two hours long! It's nice to finally go and see a movie that isn't a bloated two and a half to three hour long slugfest where my arse falls asleep and/or I feel like I'm going to piss myself by the time the credits roll! 😂😂😂
Anyway I'll stop because this comment is long enough. If you haven't already... GO AND SEE THIS MOVIE!

Godzilla Minus One is fantastic. It feels like a community of people (Godzilla fans) knew a secret a general audience is just discovering. That Godzilla is an amazing character, an icon.
I think you're missing on one point. Godzilla is 70 years strong. Most fans in the US became fans from watching the all-out kaiju fights on our television screens. They were kid friendly, which turned many of us kids into fans.
We're seeing this play out again. Legendary's Monsterverse is taking that same path to draw in a new generation of fans. Sure, it's not the dark and serious tone we would like. If we care about the King of the Monsters and the enjoyment we got from the Showa era, then let us support the Monsterverse. It's a modern-day Showa Era. It's a great time to be a Godzilla fan.

With Godzilla 2014, everyone in the theatre got hyped when even Godzilla's FOOT showed up on screen. When he used his laser, people were cheering. It was a game of waiting for Goji to show his beautiful scaled face and stomp on tanks.
During minus one, it got DEAD SILENT when you heard Godzilla - because everyone was tense, hoping the characters could make it out, and terrified that he had showed up. When he used his laser, it wasn't cheering, as much as a mix of "holy shit" and "god DAMN" as the audience realized how one-sided the conflict was.
It was one of the first times in a monster movie that I actively hoped that the monster WOULDN'T show up.
I wanted the family to be happy! I wanted the kid to have parents, I wanted everyone to come home safe. I didn't want to see a heroic sacrifice - the bait and switch being well done, though I realized it in advance during the "upgrade" scene - so seeing the parachute was a genuine relief from tension rather than a generic feel good moment.

It's honestly a very underutilized trope for movies, where you have a villain that is just a villain based on their inherent dangerous nature and not necessarily any villainous intentions. Other examples being Alien, Terminator, Jaws, Jurassic Park. There's something appealing about the idea of being in danger from some incredible unstoppable force of nature, rather than the pedantic bullshit we face in real life like car accidents or climate change.

I'm honored that this was the first (actual Japanese) Godzilla I got to see in theater. Right from the get-go he's genuinely terrifying... and that's BEFORE he gets irradiated! They show him _just_ enough; plenty of satisfactory screentime, but with gripping build-up. He's not shown bombastically as to not make the CG look unconvincing. But the character builds, the arcs, the very heavy hero's journey... the music... *everything.*
This is what fine cinema was before Hollywood devolved its content to 5-second attention-span consumption. There's little that grabs you in today's movies. And that's only to say about all the films that aren't identity/idealism flag-wavers, no; the movies that are meant to be the crowd-pleasers.
Toho completely took the core concept of cinema to heart with this one. I doubt I'll see another movie so captivating in a loooong time.

Saw this movie just this past week. I plan to see it one more time hopefully before the new year. It might have been a small audience, but damn it. The movie, the characters both Godzilla and the humans, made me invested into them. The first Godzilla movie that I was rooting for the people to beat Godzilla and for Kochi and his adopted daughter to live happy lives. Once those end credits were rolling, me and my tourist friends lead the charge with a sounding applause that had all the other audience members clapping too.
We were teary eyed and one of the audience members, a veteran air force fighter, said to us that this movie truly hit him in the emotional levels. Man was in his 60s or more, but I could tell his eyes were teary but there was a confident smile on his face. It was also what he asked us as we were chatting with him. If we understood both the messages conveyed by this movie and the various easter eggs hidden.
Personally I only saw a couple of references, such as Godzilla biting and chewing the train; but I definitely felt the message conveyed through that movie and just kept cheering for the people, the little people, fighting against Godzilla, the absolute force of malevolent nature that he became.

I find this comparison with American Godzilla funny, because it seems like people are filling these films as if Hollywood had abandoned everything that Godzilla was before, whereas Toho has already done this, like, being a hero, anti-hero, villain, victim, Godzilla has been all of this in Japanese films, from the Showa era, Hensei, Millenium, recent short films, and the fact that Toho is enjoying it and even has total respect for the Monsterverse only makes this situation even funnier, because both are lagendary ( Americans) and Toho (Japanese), are doing the same thing currently, reliving the past with current technology, the only difference is, that the Americans are reliving the showa hensei Millenium era etc., while the Japanese are reviving the solo films, serious and heavy that if you compare it to the entire franchise is made up of 5 films or more, I know that the script and the humans (some at least) are very weak, but that doesn't make the film rubbish (at least for me ), especially GvK in which the proposal, the focus of that film was the obvious one in the title, and they delivered, what will come in this next film may not have a serious tone like the one in 2014 or the minus one, but perhaps for the The story of monsters, from Kong's perspective, can be quite heavy, I mean, have you seen the origin of this Kong? It's sad man, so let's not go all out and say that the next film is going to be silly just because Godzilla is doing the same thing he did 40 films ago, running. The human story is what got me, and this can be directly compared to Jaws, another favorite. I say this about Jaws all the time, "It's not about the shark, it's about the 3 guys on the boat." And this is what Godzilla Minus One is. The characters are so strong and their motivations are clear, how can you not feel for them?
This movie has something that's also been severely lacking in Hollywood in recent years: good male characters with arcs, showcasing not toxic masculinity, but honor and responsibility, and the emotional burden in having to "step up" because society and your own self-worth demands it.

I liked it. I understood the survivor's guilt felt by the main guy. I enjoyed the ominous Godzilla score. I liked how it gave you time to read the subtitles. I was bummed that Godzilla did not reach Tokyo.. I didn't get to sing.. Oh no, there goes Tokyo! Go go Godzilla. Kong the OG kaiju RULES!

The characters in King of the Monsters weren't just boring, they were actively some of the stupidest people ever written.
Charles Danse himself sums it up IN the movie when he asks "What did mommy tell you would happen by waking these monsters up? That we'd all live happily together or some nonsense? And you, do you really think your son killed by Godzilla would want MORE monsters running around killing kids like him? You're all idiots, and I'm leaving this movie without explanation."
It's the best part of the whole movie lol.

I’m glad to hear you speak with accurate knowledge about the franchise (I didn’t know you were also a lifelong fan till now). But not only do I appreciate your thoughtful review of the movie and the series as a whole, I really liked how you highlighted what j think is Godzilla’s greatest superpower: his plasticity. He can become whatever you need him to become in order to meet the needs and/or demands of the times. Whether a nuclear allegory, a political satire, an environmental message, a thoughtful reflection on the human condition or modern cultural concerns, an anti-hero, action hero, or superhero, a friend of all children, a or just mindless popcorn schlock, Godzilla can and does do it all. With nearly 40 movies over 70 years, I always say: “there’s a Godzilla movie for everyone-even for those who hate Godzilla movies.”

The Ginza attack broke me. Seeing thousands of people scared for their lives and die horrifically while Godzilla is going out of his way to cause as much damage and death as possible was genuinely hard to watch. Made worse by Shikishima coming to Ginza to save Noriko, just to watch her get stripped away right in front of him. She survived yes but I didn't know that when it happened. I felt his breakdown when he believed that he had lost someone he loved deeply and wanted to live his life with at the hands of the same monster that has been plaguing his nightmares for years at that point. I cried like a damn baby. I haven't cried over a Godzilla movie since I was 5, watching Godzilla vs Destoroyah, and seeing Jr and Godzilla die. The fact I cried for the humans in a _Godzilla_ movie too is telling to just how well made the human characters are. I love this movie so much. It quickly dethroned Godzilla vs Destoroyah as my favorite Godzilla movie.

  • @drhacknslashzombietimelord6768

GODZILLA MINUS ONE was the first Toho movie I got to see in the cinema. On my ranking list, GOJIRA 1954 & SHIN GODZILLA were tied at the number 1 spot as best movie in the franchise. Then I saw this, and, it knocked them down into the number 2 spot. A close number 2, but 2nd none the less. The two things I loved about this the most was, how much of a savage Godzilla was in this film, and, the human characters. Never have I seen human characters in the film series so well acted, and well written as they are in this one. The only other time the human characters in the series were this well written and performed, was in the 1954 original. Now, on my rankings, I am only ranking Toho, as, I rank the Monster Verse separately. I was already chomping at the bit to get the Blu-Ray when I was halfway through the end credits.

As a person that been watching Godzilla since I was able to speak and being born in 75. Always loved Godzilla growing up. But I always felt watching Toho's versions more to my liking. Hollywood really don't care about the human actors at all. "Let them Fight" has turned into a meme. Yes, Godzilla can be anything in those movies. But there is something very special when Toho bring their version of Godzilla into the mix. I still believe to this day when Godzilla Minus one hit theaters, right away Legendary had trailers. It was like Hollywood was saying "We have a Godzilla movie too, don't forget about us." Knowing damn well, Toho is aiming to make some money for their movie. It was like Legendary aimed to beat the brakes on Minus One. Now the trailers for Minus One in my opinion didn't do the movie justice after seeing it in theaters. I walked out the movies with a giant smile. My inner child came out since I grew up watching Toho movies.
