So ive only recently discovered your channel and may I say well done. Love the content. I am an ultralight enthusiast thru and thru. I typically wade my local rivers and streams where we have an abundance of smallmouth bass, trout and redeye/rockbass. My go to setup is a 7'6" Daiwa Presso paired with a Daiwa Regal 1000 with a 6.2:1 gear ratio. Ive usually always used 4lb mono. I dont care for fluorocarbon personally cus our river bottoms are straight rock shelves along with boulders and just rock everywhere. I have a lot more line breaks with the fluoro. Just 2 weeks ago i caught my pb trout on 2lb p line hp trout copolymer. It came in at 24.5 inches and weighed 5.2lbs and was also wild which suprised me. I just ordered some 6lb braid. Ive used heavier braid before. Trying to find a good leader thats not fluoro in the 4 to 6 lb range thatll match well to .14mm...maybe fly line tippet? Idk. But what mule jig setup would u recommend for smallmouth and trout in shallow rocky rivers. The depth is typically 2 to 5 feet with some deeper holes here and there. Tbh non local people call our rivers creeks but none the less, technically theyre rivers. They are loaded with bass in the 3 to 5lb range as well as trout, esp rainbows and browns up to 5 lb. I guess what im asking is which mule jig for targeting citation sized 5lb plus smallmouth and trout? Thanks for the videos and all your hard work. I gotta get me a mule fishing hat too. I would look at the 1/32oz Mule Jigs for the smaller plastics (Burro Bug, Donkey Tail Jr, Horse Fly) and get some 1/16oz Mule Jigs for the larger plastics (Jack Worm, Donkey Tail). Pretty much all of the lineup will appeal to those species, but I would probably start with a standard Donkey Tail and 1/16oz Mule Jig and just cast and drift/twitch it through pools.
I find myself using the float more and more each time I go out. It never gets old watching that float go under! For swimming the bait I'd rather put the plastic on the Bronco Blade, especially in the spring, it just flat out catches everything!!

Love the jig heads, however have trouble rigging DK Jr. Full size no problem but Jr seems to never go on straight or gets wonky I gather because it's so soft and tiny.

I’m a bass fisherman primarily, but occasionally fish for stock trout in creeks and wanted a smaller profile setup to do that. Did some googling and next thing I know, I’ve watched a TON of your videos and just bought an ultralight setup! I’m buying some mule baits too! Your channel is an incredible resource, and you’ve got me excited to fish like in a way I never have before!
I use a 7'2 medium light rod with a 2000 series reel with 6 pound test line and it works amazingly well. I also use a 5'6 rod with 4lb test line for brook trout. Usually the horse fly works great! Caught a lot with your gear! Thanks for bringing something different to the market!

I'm tired of my little rubber worms or paddle tails plastics and rubbers keep breaking and tearing apart. Those things cost a lot of money to keep buying every two weeks. It's nonsense. The fish attack it like they never eat before, lol.
That Shimano Exage is a great reel at lower sizes. You really need to search to find reels at 1500-2500 that work nicely and feel smooth. Exceler is another good shout at this mini size.
Using smaller tanta style soft plastics(can't get mule in Portugal) I find that I get the most success on the colder harder days fishing against the current with twitching and drifting, completely against the current, that makes fishing from the bank mostly useless on the winter. Awesome advice as usual.
Great content and video here Ethan. I like most of these retrieves but I catch a bunch under the slip floats. After a few rounds of 3 to 1 my buddies give in and ask what I'm doing differently. I tell them you're working to hard with that. Let the breeze and a little current work for you. When the float stops I'll tap the handle with my index finger or quiver the tip of the rod gently. I need some hi-viz line for a little more pendulum action. Missing too many that way. Blessings brother
I've been rigging the 3.2 minnow sideways. Kinda like a leach type action. It works, just like all Mule lures. I'm thinking of a way to make the karma black. 🤔😉
I fish a specific river Doe River here in TN. The water is moving all the time. I've always gotten frustrated with fishing a jig and plastic bc I'm not sure if I should still twitch the jig or not. I've seen sculpin and trout there. I did 4 years ago see a could small smallmouths.
Trout fishing can vary from spot to spot, but my top choices would be to either run a Horse Fly under a float similar to fly fishing under a strike indicator. Or I also like to twitch a Mule Minnow 3.2 through deeper pools and look for more aggressive trout.
I would really love to try the mule jigs but I can’t find them here in Deep South Texas. Is there a link where I can order some. They look like they will work awesome and would love to try them.

So here is a question. I have a lake that has mostly wood cover like branches, log, limbs and trees. What is the best way to stop getting my jigs stuck in this type of cover? My product idea is a version of the Mule Jig that allows the bait to be fished like a Texas rig. I keep losing jigs on branches and brush piles. I catch a lot of fish, but lose a lot of jigs in the process. I think ZMan created a version of the Shroom Jig that allows for a TX rig setup. Any thoughts Ethan? Mule Fishing is my favorite tackle company hands down!
Thanks Jason, Brush and trees can definitely be a challenge for the ultralight angler. While I also enjoy a "Texas Rig" style jig offering, it is not exactly suited for the ultralight style of fishing as it requires more hookset power (stronger rod and line) to drive proper hook penetration. I definitely will look into some weedless options for innovation, but for the time being, I would say that opting for the lightest possible jig you can get away with is usually the best way to avoid major snags. I like to fish directly in cover with lighter jigs, which helps the jig keep from falling deep into the cover and allows me to "feel it through" a bit better.
Do you have any suppliers in Canada really like your product but can't seem to find any up here. Love the videos have been watching for a few years have always enjoyed ultralight fishing.
From shore, how do you cast the small jigs (1/32) a decent distance? I always struggle to cast beyond 15-18 feet due to the lack of weight. I am using a 4 lb test on an ultralight rod and its still a struggle.
It is all about gear selection. A size 1000 reel on a decent ultralight will usually do the job, but the line is the most important piece of the puzzle. I like low diameter, smooth, braided line or I tend to go with a 2lb variety of copolymer or polyester line. Those options increase distance substantially. Phenix Iron Feather 5lb braid is my current favorite.
The TFO is still one of the best options out there. I prefer my Phenix Elixir but it is a pricier rod so I only recommend that if it is in budget. Both are great!
What do you use for stocked fish? Im struggling here in california on stocked fish. Ive had trout come to check out a donkey tail, and just swim off or ignore it completely
I don't fish for a lot of stocked trout so I can't tell you exactly what to do there. But you might try adding a little scent to your presentation if it is allowed. Otherwise, downsizing your line diameter may also help. They have really good eyesight
I guess it is hard for me to say without seeing what you are talking about, but if you are fishing a river with a lot of current, it may not hurt to increase the size of gear you are using to ensure you are able to fight fish back without too many issues.

The slip float is a classic. Definitely hard to beat, but I can't help but prefer to free-line a jig.
