My favorite thing about getting an ultralight setup and mule gear...i'm catching more fish, period ... And the other day i still pulled in a 23 in pike on a spinner and small panfish jig.
Why do you lot insist on sub 2lb line the point is keeping your gear weight down and Not snapping off every time you hook a decent fish now there's a couple more fish swimming around with your hooks in their lips... yes keep using this gear but get it balanced with proper terminal
I was curious so I looked it up! Ajing is a Japanese style of fishing where you use high-end ultralight tackle to target Aji (Yellowtail). Similar to say Trout fishing, Bass fishing, or panfishing specific techniques, rod-reel, and tackle. Ajing tackle can be used for any ultralight application just like any other ultralight rod. For example the Berkley Lightning Rod Trout Rod is a trout specific rod, but can be used for any ultralight fishing application. Good video Ethan thanks for sharing!
It's funny you did this video now. I've had the longer ultralight version of this rod in my Amazon cart for over a week now! I'm not sure I'm good enough to mess with a super ultralight, and definitely not that light of line, but it still gives me a good idea on how it will perform. I was happy to see it was on the faster side. Considering it was a SUL, that was impressive!
I like fishing UL for bass in my area, but with all the underwater weeds and random snags, I can't use less than 4lb line. Tackle is too pricey on a retirees budget, (actually it's tying knots with old eyes) and our ponds/lakes have a bumper crop of cabomba this season. But fact is, as you show, catching the little guys on ultra-light tackle from a kayak is a blast!
I fully understand! Parts of this sport can definitely be a young buck’s game. I guarantee I’ll upsize line diameter as I get a bit older for that same reason. Truly appreciate the support, gentlemen.
Although I haven't done an actual double-blind study, word on the street is that the backwards ferrule is an English design, and common on fly rods. They say that design gets a more even bend/transition into the handle section. Good move on the 10' yak...seems like extra weight; especially for non-expedition normal people trips. Pedals and a rudder look plenty good on a short yak. Peace!
Hey Ethan! I purchased a BFS set up you recommended in an older video. I’ve been having so much fun with it and certainly will be buying some mule baits to throw on it soon.
Been inspiring me to downsize and ultralight fish. Was going to get. 100 reel paired with okuma celilo. However ended up using. $9 wayfarer combo which has sufficed. Managed to find a creek on maps, pull up to it and catch a fish on my 3rd cast. Was very good fun. Beautiful colours and good fight. Want to downsize further but will go with line first, then the setup again
dude, Aji is horse mackerel and I won't tell you much about it. Aji rods are specially designed for that type of fish. I just received the Mifine Microbite Aji rod today and I am very satisfied. I also have a few other much more expensive rods, but that's not the point of this post. But, this is the third time I'm saying this about Duel The One. Also specially developed leash for Aji. It is new, only a year old. a mixture of braid, FC, monofil and has the best characteristics. Thin and accurate diameter, no memory, solid, excellent load capacity, slightly stretchable so FC does not bind, yet excellent sensitivity. the best of what I have searched for so far. for example: pe#0.08 1.6lb 0.7kg 0.045mm -the thinnest pe#0.4 7.2lb 3.2kg 0.11mm- thickest
@@FishAnything I did :) I forgot to write in the email that I am not a dealer and I have no use for the product. Also, I use 0.2PE and 0.4PE. The string is insanely thin haha. 0.2 PE can lift 1 kg of clean load. This is something I was looking for two years ago, but it didn't exist.
I have a Shakespeare ul rod with a Daiwa exceler LT I like it. Had the Daiwa presso but the pole exploded into 4 pieces when a random big fish hit when I was creek fishing. Never seen a pole explode like that before. Been looking into light action poles lately. Kinda want to do a different setup
That’s crazy!! Sorry to hear it exploded on you. This might sound crazy but I actually want that to happen to me in a video because I’ve tested so many dang rods and I’ve never had one break on a fish in a way that wasn’t my fault haha
Great video, Love fishing ultra light!!! I actually caught my biggest fish on ultralight gear, 4 lb test and a brand new 6 lb test rod caught me a 12.5 lb catfish, Insane!!!
Great review Ethan but I do too much bank fishing for supper ultralight but always appreciate the insights. I thought you were headed for a mega fish meltdown. Really was hoping 3rd time was the charm. Blessings
been enjoying your channel for a while . i was wondering ... since you're into UL so much .... have you ever tried using fly rod flys ? i have and it works but i cant cast far without a little split shot or a water float . fun for something different sometimes ......
This has a solid tip so it’s a faster load. Less resistance to create flex because it’s SUL vs standard UL. I like this rod more, but it’s more niche. The Yamaga is a great ultralight for more versatile usage.
I fish steelhead and salmon so much I find it hard to drop to a rod under 7 foot . Most of my ultra lights are 7 or 8 foot . What do you like about the shorter rod
Just more portable and lightweight. Maintains a fast action a bit better while working a jig. Honestly got it moreso for shallow bank fishing. In the kayak, I prefer a bit longer rods too.
Should be a Shimano sorare be 500 he bought it in the last JDM video he did like 4 to 6 months ago. I bought it after he showed it and am currently using it with a daiwa procyon and 3lb braid from phoenix elixer
Love your gear reviews as I am an avid ultralight spinning gear trout angler . TFO just released a new ultralight rod for Trout/panfish. Its higher end than the TFO Trout/Panfish II and sits at a price point of $249. Anyway, I just put it out there in case anybody wanted to do a review of it... Hint Hint, Nudge Nudge. Aji is the Japanese horse mackerel- a small salt water fish that is popular in sushi, sashimi and fried. Ajing is the style of fishing for them with micro jigs.
It makes more sense to socket the upper portion because the lower portion has a taper in the right direction. I'd be interested to know if they tapered the bottom of the upper section. You really do want a taper fit for this application, regardless. A straight socket would either have to slip or be press fit and would either slip freely or be hard to separate. And tapering the bottom of the upper half seems like extra work so it is a REALLY interesting choice just from an manufacturing standpoint.
I find your ultralight gear reviews very informative! Can't go wrong with honest, unbiased reviews. Thanks Ethan
Thank you! Glad you enjoy them 👊🏽👊🏽

I love ultralight as well if you just want to catch fish in general. A 1 pound smallmouth or trout feels like a giant 😂
I love how many thumbs up this comment got! Heck yes that’s what it’s all about.

@@johncowan5924 I didn't mean to catch a 23 inch pike, it just happened. 8 pound braid and 4 pound leader was plenty for the pike though.

because the top piece is solid rod that's why it fit in to the bottom piece
Good intel - I didn't know that was why
Some of these Japanese rod are very unique, love to see more Japanese version rod in the future!
JDM gear definitely offers a lot of unique and quality that we don't always have available domestically.
Thanks Ethan. Your reviews are always top notch and has me now fishing ultralight. Ive had more fun doing so the last 3 years. Again, thanks!!

Nice. The gekkabijin is a nice rod. Very similar to shimano soare xr. Amazon has a great price! Asian portal has the gekka air for $300!
So many JDM rods/reels I have no idea about lol. It’s an entirely different world of gear (and the gear is all better than US).

Such a fun rod!
How are you liking the PDL106 for lake fishing?
It’s doing pretty good! The 120 held its position better and took on big water better (to be expected) but the 106 is more manageable off the water.
Thank you for posting this video, it was very informative for whether or not I should try 1.75lb line XD
Great for shallow panfish, not so much for giant catfish around docks 😂😂

So is super ultralight like a feather lite? First time I’ve heard the term actually
Yeah it’s a step below standard ultralight. Kind of funny to have super and ultra in a title 🤠

I have never used a Denali I’ll look into it

what line you use
This is 1.75lb Sunline Polyester line
Are you going to trout fish this winter like you did last year.yoda rules.

Ajing is horse mackerel

This the type of rod someone accidentally hooks into a sturgeon with
Ha! That would be next level
Eging is a type of lure fishing that involves using a specialized lure to catch cephalopods, such as squid, cuttlefish, and octopus:
Aji is the Japanese horse mackerel- a small salt water fish that is popular in sushi, sashimi and fried. Ajing is the style of fishing for them with micro jigs.
