Still love this song so much. Reminds me of my first love as a teenager. Now almost 50 years old, reminds me how fast time goes and how precious life is.
This video was my introduction to Matthew Sweet. I just graduated from high school when I bought the album. It was prophetic as I met my first real boyfriend the following autumn. Every song is perfect and still relevant.
God this man Actually Made his love for his waifu in a song long before modern weebs give it up for Matthew Sweet a absolute Legend and a great songwriter
Oh, my goodness... Matthew Sweet's music in the 80's and 90's was so magical... Years after HS., My husband and I saw many of his concerts, right up close... it was so special... we are sure thinking about him and his family and friends.... wishing peace to all... so difficult...
Jim Kaposztas The 21-year old American had mashed up battle scenes from the show Star Blazers (a localized version of Space Battleship Yamamoto) to the sounds of the Beatles “All You Need is Love” in 1982
I believe this was the first time I saw Lum. These clips make the anime she's in seem a lot less sillier than it is. Uresei Yatsura will always hold a place in my heart.
This song is so tendersweet for me. This was at the cusp of the breakthrough for anime into the mainstream. Before Toonami. I remember the summer this came out and I was tweaking because I was already familiar with Ranma 1/2. It was good to see someone else with a passion for Urusei Yatsura back then because it was hard to find.
Urusei Yatsura was my escapism when I hit depression and rock bottom post high-school (no job, no education, no friends). When I first came across this UA-cam video, it just blew my mind. Can't say the show did me any favors though other than me not killing myself.
You sir, speak the truth. Matthew writes incredibly beautiful melodies and lyrics, but the growling, screeching, soaring brilliance of Quine, Lloyd, and Julian raised those songs to the pinnacle of what alt/power pop was in the 90s.
Not too shabby with the bassists and drummers either! Ric Menck and Tony Marsico are truly incredible Quine is in my all-time top 5 guitar players though. Pete Phillips (RIP) was another phenomenal guitar player Matthew brought on board...crazy good
Yeah, totally. I dream that somewhere there are still demo tapes of Quine jamming with these guys, there's just not enough of his power pop work out there
No, she is actually mine considering I actually have all the movies, episodes and as much of the merchandise I could find. Not even ashamed to admit I have a dakimakura of Lum. - Sargonarhes, 1986
Absolute perfect pop perfection!!! Damn I love this and Matthew's unbelievable body of work! Almost impossible to pick a fave by Mr Sweet but this is certainly up there!!! ...... Oh and perhaps Sick of Myself, Girlfriend, Evangeline and...???!!! 😎
I work at Applebee's and this song is one of our Pre loaded playlists...I'm shocked to see it's not a multi million view hit. Sounded like one. And very catchy. I can only imagine who picked the song for the Applebee's restaurant playlist lol.
And as long as we're on the subject of legends - that's none other than Television's Richard Lloyd reeling off that effortless, spiralling solo break Effing genius.
Yes, The Byrds! I hear that now. My first thought was Adam Schlesinger and Fountains of Wayne. This is such a hooky song, much like a lot of FoWs work.
I like how a lot of the clips here show Lum upset, while being juxtaposed to a love song. It's telling of what the singer thinks of the girl he's describing: "Through all of her good times and her bad, she's still beautiful."
I wish I could say Matthew Sweet introduced me to awesomeness that is Lum (Urusei Yatsura), but that wouldn't be quite true. Credit for introducing me to Matthew Sweet goes to the _Oh My Goddess!_ manga, which used lyrics from three of his songs, including this one. It was shortly after I discovered UY that I learned Sweet did this video. Whatever. It's perfect.
Ugh, really? I think the vids are what helped hold him back! But he's not a sell-out so what do I know, could've made a cheesy video.....great artist, big fan
In a very weird way, this really opened my eyes to anime in general and in particular Lum. I actually fell in love with Lum around September/October 1993, during my second year in college, and since then she's always had a special spot in my heart.
Same. Someone may find this comment and use it to make fun of me at a later time, but I feel the same. Even after I've actually gotten married and went on with life, Lum (and this whole anime/manga, by extension) will always find a nice, warm place in my heart.
Urusei Yatsura and Lum will always have a soft spot in my heart because I discovered it when I was around 10 years old. Before I had stresses about school results, my social connections, girlfriends etc. Every time I see the show or Lum's face, it gives me a twinge of nostalgia, reminding me of how simple life used to be.
I actually remember seeing part of this video playing on a TV at Sear's when I was in my early teens, mainly because I saw Lum in it. To think I saw a tiny bit of Urusei Yatsura before I even knew what it was. I also suspect that this is probably where I got my fixation towards green haired fictional characters from.
I know that feeling bro. I've moved on and found a new love, a wonder ful gal that's honestly better than my first wife. Those old memories are still there though and still hurt and still sting a bit. Maybe we should just get anime waifus to save us some pain?

Dang! Sick of myself came up on a random mix, and I thought "I know this dude"...so I listened all the way through...then I found "Girlfriend" abd listened to part of that...and thought "Well, maybe I don't know who he is, he's ok though," and hit this one BY ACCIDENT! I only need to hear the first 12 seconds and I was like, "YES! I KNOW THIS ONE!!!!"
In the video there is a character error, at 1:07, the one that appears in that scene is Princess Eru from the first Only You movie. They figured out and digitally painted the hair to make it look like it's Lum. At first glance and those who didn't see this complete anime don't realize it, but the true fans, we realized that in that scene it was not Lum
looking at the views on this video I can see this is still a highly underappreciated song. I'm adding it to my play list. Maybe some people will stumble upon it.
This video was ahead of it's time. Long before everybody was making AMVs online, we had this!

This is a perfect, perfect pop song. And it holds up.
omg he literally captured that nascent nostalgia+excitement+tremulous anticipation that characterized the very heady days of the early 90s so well
Basically he created a video and song in 1991 that feels like it belongs in 1994-1996. Also, he loved Lum two years before I discovered her in 1993
My favorite song of the past 30 years. I even wanted this to be my wedding song.
i've always loved this song and i feel like i'm going crazy learning that it's been set to a lovingly crafted Lum tribute this whole time
