People tried to talk about it back then and they got shut down saying they were judging her because not everyone can put on weight. One of my fav Fiona songs contains a thinspo slogan ‘hunger hurts but starving works’ ... I love her but yeah a lot of people knew, they just couldn’t talk about it. And that’s problematic because I feel many people, like the director of this video, saw it and exploited it because heroin chic was cool

the late 60s early 70s styles were trendy in the mid to late 90s, the way the 90s are trendy today.in 1997 I wore wool skirts, knee highs bell bottoms and platforms. favorite artists were oasis, fiona apple, bush, green day and the beatles again! also, every teen had a lava lamp and beaded doorway, favorite movies were austin powers, scream, slums of beverly hills. modern heroin chic ala kate moss /super models were also in, this video definitely has both elements.

Despite being less explicit than a lot of popular music videos today, I feel like the rawness of Criminal makes it hit a lot harder.
The depiction of female sexuality here is really, really complex. There are moments of brazen seductiveness intercut with moments of total indifference to the camera intercut with moments of intense vulnerability. FA’s youth and her sickly thinness are both ever-present specters that suffuse the entire video, yet both are treated as merely incidental. And the way it’s filmed makes the whole thing feel simultaneously performative and deeply honest.
IMO this video is provocative in the truest sense. Not in the sense that it’s meant to be titillating, but in the sense that it’s meant to make the viewer question what exactly they are watching and how exactly they feel about it.

Here it's presented in a Hollywood fashion, but Fiona rightfully pointed out that one should not take what's presented as real. The fact that nowadays all artists "keep it real" and get millions on their side just shows that it's being played into the game. Fake is the new real.

The poetry and metaphor present in these lyrics is absolutely brilliant.
As a songwriter myself, I studied the lyrics three times while watching this ingenious - though not the least bit subtle - imagery of this masterfully risqué video that gets so far close to, but - somehow, amazingly - never "crossing the line."
I read the words of a woman in private religious confession after having succumbed to the temptation of the proverbial forbidden fruit. She realizes what her deeds prove of her own self-image and the threat they create to the only committed relationship she has ever had.
    Wow.
Seeing that songwriter, vocalist, and video actress are all one-in-the-same is just absolutely mind-boggling. I am floored finding out that all those talents rest in the very same artist.
