One of the best human beings on earth. Giving up a concert tour to be with her dog and enjoy their time together because her dog is getting old and is more important to her than monetary gain. If only more people thought like she did.
Wow, look at all the people here legitimately mad because someone discovered a song they like through a TV show as opposed to digging up an old vinyl in a thrift store. Jesus Christ why does it matter how someone discovered a song? Why can't you be glad that people think your music is tasteful?
Red Ogre That's a fairly recent trend to appeal to vinyl collecting hipsters and midlife crisis dads. Vinyl and casette tapes both pretty much died out during the 90s with the widespread adoption of the CD format.
this song is literal magic, its a phenomenal song that i feel represents passion and love in general, the tenderness and the safety, the comfort of the touch of your loved one, the ups and downs, the fears and insecurities, and how it all fades away the second you're with them, its just a really personal song for me and thats what it makes me feel, it really helps me calm down when i feel a bit worse and cant be together with her, its just really important and meaningful to me, god sent song
It represents selfishness as she craves and loves to have a lot of fun but not only with the men she loves (her boyfriend that would be) and the guilt is chasing her mind, so she needs a "good defence", she needs "to come clean", to help her before she to atone, she needs to justify what she does, and thats why she feels like a criminal, cause shes playing with the feelings of her love because she craves sex. Thats why you see her with many people in the video
It reminds me of old true crime shows where you see the old videos and photos of the crime scene or suspects or evidence. But instead it's like we are seeing it like its evidence being photographed before the death takes place. Because its eerie to see her so skinny and hollow. I suppose shes supposed to look sexy but somehow the angles of her body and the camera manage to catch more of the horror of it than the beauty or glamor of it. Like its intentional.

There's something so raw and real about the 90's. A time so unique that can't be replicated or manufactured like the 70s or 80s that are chock full of nostalgia bait nowadays.
OH boob, said like a child of the 90s that wants to ridicule every decade except his silly stupid decade. PS, it is an excellent song-absolutely like any you can take from any decade, but that doesn't make it any less of a fantastic, etc, song.

@@davidwong656 That's pretty much my point. There is definitely a realness behind Fiona Apple's (and indeed many other artists of the time) music. Here it's presented in a Hollywood fashion, but Fiona rightfully pointed out that one should not take what's presented as real. The fact that nowadays all artists "keep it real" and get millions on their side just shows that it's being played into the game. Fake is the new real.
I was in high school when this came out. Now that im almost turning 40, i heard it again being sang on AMERICAN HORROR STORY. I instantly remembered Fiona Apple depite forgetting the title of the song. I still love this song.
This song is so relatable. Lying to make someone stay and wanting to be free from those lies but not wanting to because you know once you do everything will change.
This song trumps every single Taylor Swift/Miley Cyrus/pop star crap I've ever heard. Somehow I feel the teeny bop era which burst onto the scene shortly after this album pushed female artists back a couple notches.
+47imagine Well those songs aren't as deep, personal or even as emotional as this. People today only want to hear good news and have fun, so that's the only thing new pop artists are putting out, just to be popular. Nobody uses music to express their real emotions anymore, unless it's about sex and getting laid.

The poetry and metaphor present in these lyrics is absolutely brilliant. As a songwriter myself, I studied the lyrics three times while watching this ingenious - though not the least bit subtle - imagery of this masterfully risqué video that gets so far close to, but - somehow, amazingly - never "crossing the line." I read the words of a woman in private religious confession after having succumbed to the temptation of the proverbial forbidden fruit. She realizes what her deeds prove of her own self-image and the threat they create to the only committed relationship she has ever had. Wow. Seeing that songwriter, vocalist, and video actress are all one-in-the-same is just absolutely mind-boggling. I am floored finding out that all those talents rest in the very same artist.

When this song first came out I thought it was the best pop song I had ever heard. I’ll be 59 next month and my opinion hasn’t changed.

When this song first came out it was one of my favorite songs by anyone. I'll be 63 in a few months and that opinion hasn't changed. Only, now it's one of my least favorite songs by Fiona Apple.
I think it's more alternative than pop

The glowing eyes are so perfect, turning those messy drunk party photos into just how her eyes look in parts of the video
According to Pop Up Video, the glowing eyes were added in post-production

I can't believe this is 20 yrs old already. Jesus time has flown!! It feels like yesterday I was in my 20's and this video was on MTV/VH-1 (back when they both still actually played video blocks)
Kristina Romano agreed, back when you could just turn on VH1 and let the rest of the night get bathed in alcohol and bruised memories

Really??? Is this song 20 year old for real? Wow! It sounds so fresh... what an Artist!
Yes this was release in September 1997. Yup this is now 21 years old already this year.

@@ORGANISM44 This was released in the 90s. It was a different era, and this was considered really explicit and suggestive.

Proof 90's music was the best.
After the 80s😉.
After the 70s😉.
After the 1470s😉.
I don't know about that. Either 80s or 90s
All I know the 90s is superior to the 2010s.
Wow, look at all the people here legitimately mad because someone discovered a song they like through a TV show as opposed to digging up an old vinyl in a thrift store. Jesus Christ why does it matter how someone discovered a song? Why can't you be glad that people think your music is tasteful?
I'm sorry, what?
An old vinyl? How long ago do you kids think the 90s were?
SuzakuX lmfao exactly
SuzakuX They still have vinyls of new albums.

Fiona is always gonna be one of my favourite female musicians. I grew up listening to her. Music was awesome in the 90s.
Love the concept of this video. How the whole thing is like a photograph
Yeah. I wonder if Terry Richardson directed this video because I looks just like one of his photographs.

The angriest and most sex-driven piano I've ever heard.
That piano playing was menacingly excellent. Definitely put that song on another level.
There's something so raw and real about the 90's. A time so unique that can't be replicated or manufactured like the 70s or 80s that are chock full of nostalgia bait nowadays.
OH boob, said like a child of the 90s that wants to ridicule every decade except his silly stupid decade.
PS, it is an excellent song-absolutely like any you can take from any decade, but that doesn't make it any less of a fantastic, etc, song.

i dont know, back in the 90s this girl got hung and quartered for calling the entertainment industry "bullshit" which by todays standards would be either nothing or something that would gain her millions of fans. people dont get real like her because when she did back then they fucked up it. i dont think any decades been raw or real, but people did do a lot of coke and experimenting then lol.

This had the disquieting feel of the offended SO in question looking at the footage made of the party through a hundred security cameras, laying out her indiscretions for them to watch with a mixture of disgust and horror, reacting to the different reactions of her actions with pleasure during and regret afterward.
@@daynechastant well said, the sleazy vibe of it really came across
I listened to this when my parents didn't buy me N64
The poetry and metaphor present in these lyrics is absolutely brilliant.
As a songwriter myself, I studied the lyrics three times while watching this ingenious - though not the least bit subtle - imagery of this masterfully risqué video that gets so far close to, but - somehow, amazingly - never "crossing the line."
I read the words of a woman in private religious confession after having succumbed to the temptation of the proverbial forbidden fruit.
I just want to take a moment to appreciate exactly how uncomfortable she made us all to get a vibe across
