I'm absolutely guilty of being addicted to UA-cam and framing it as being "educational". I got to work on a big project this year and that's where I noticed that I'm addicted to my phone. The moment I don't understand something right away, I'll reach for my phone. Great video! Also unrelated but I love your hair, looks absolutely amazing!
Yatshie, I know that feeling all too well. You're so right about how it seems almost easier to frame UA-cam as productive because on the surface it seems more 'educational' than TikTok or Instagram. Then you just forget that you're spending all your time on your phone haha. Glad that you found the video helpful though and I hope that you can start to get in control of your phone addiction. Thanks so much haha - I've been growing my hair out for about 2 years now and it was such a good decision !! :))))
Summary : - write down 3 goals for 2025 - do not use the phone first thing in the morning - replace phone addiction with reading - be mindful about what hard thing are you avoiding by doomscrolling
Haha, I am not sure how to feel about this, Adrienne !! As long as you're only hitting ignore to watch my videos - I guess that's okay lol. All the best and thanks for the support :)
I read the book “Break up with your phone” many years ago and it just made me learn you just need to get up and do whatever it is you’re trying to do, don’t think-just do it
That sounds like a great suggestion, Kylie. I love that idea of not overthinking something too, just getting up and cracking on with the task at hand !! :)
Amazing video!! I’m 23 and recently had a, for want of a better phrase, existential crisis? Something like that. I got my first smartphone when I was 11, and it’s dawned on me that I wasted a lot of my formative years since then. I have no hobbies because I never experienced the boredom that leads to trying new things and sticking to less stimulating tasks. Only recently have I tried actually picking up hobbies like reading, drawing, even trying to learn the piano, and I feel so far behind everybody else. I’ve been trying to break this cycle for a couple of years now and it’s tough. I deleted TikTok in 2023 and never went back, and have my ups and downs with Instagram. UA-cam I just can’t seem to let go of. I’m gonna give the advice in this video a go and hope I can break free from this curse!!
Aile, I can feel that 2025 is going to be a GREAT year for you and you're gonna finally get control over your dopamine !! Love your channel by the way :)
I noticed my "doom scrolling habit" a while ago. I tried deleting Instagram and UA-cam from my phone and only using it in the browser. Sadly UA-cam added Shorts there, and there I was doomscrolling again.. So I downloaded an app to block the two websites and I changed my phone background to being black, turned it to grayscale and deleted all games. Now I only allow myself to watch UA-cam on my Laptop. I don't use that one very often because I have two little kids at home and simply not the time, and they always wanna watch what Mommy does on the screen, so I only take it out when they are asleep 😂 Have been doing this since 3 weeks now and it's going great. To be honest, I only watch your videos at the moment, because you make such amazing content that inspires me to take out my journal and not watch another video 😉 So Olly, thank you again for an amazing video. I am taking notes in my physical journal here😊
Hi Nicole, thank you so much for sharing your doomscrolling journey and I am sure that it must resonate with some of my other viewers, not least me !! It's very interesting to hear that you seem to have cracked your doomscrolling addiction but only after blocking the websites on your phone and restricting yourself to UA-cam on your laptop. I think it really shows the extent to which these platforms have us addicted. Nevertheless, hopefully your story can inspire some more of my viewers that they too can stop doomscrolling - especially if they have a family they want to be present for (like I'm sure you do). Thank you so much for your kind words of support, it means a lot to here that I am inspiring other people to journal and experiment with other ways of levelling up their life. You're going to absolutely LOVE the videos that I've got lined up in the future !! Talk soon, Ol :)

But, I assure you that if you go back and look at my earlier videos, this was not the level I started at lol. Hopefully my channel can continue to grow so that I can help more people. As a bonus, you might be able to say you were one of the first few subscribers !! :))
Great tips to reduce doomscrolling! To stop myself doomscrolling when out and about, I have actually decided to stop taking my phone out of the house so I can look around me and appreciate where I am and have the confidence to smile at strangers and even make conversation with people I pass - much more meaningful than being on my phone :)
So happy that you found these tips helpful, Miah! That sounds like a great suggestion to not even take your phone out and about. To any of my viewers struggling with making conversation in public, that's such an awesome tip to consider. Leave your phone at home and see what happens....

I started using it more when I found out that I couldn’t do my job without a phone because we have like three different verification apps. And now I’m back on UA-cam, WhatsApp and instagram again😭 maybe I should leave this phone in my office and get back to the Nokia again. Biggest problem I’ve noticed is how much the entire world uses a phone during conversations, work, workouts, dinner, literally everywhere
Your channel is really growing Olly! Congrats! As far as social media goes, I can't tell you how many times I have gone on Facebook or UA-cam for a specific purpose and the next thing I know it's 30-60 minutes later and I was distracted by something else. It's so annoying and makes me not want to go on those sites anymore, particularly Facebook which I don't go on very much these days. Thanks for the tips. I really want to stop scrolling!

Hi Olly, I'm a huge fan of your content! As someone new to reading self-help books, I'm determined to make 2025 my best year yet! I have a notebook in which I list all the books I read each year I used to keep a quote book, but how am I ever going to get the quote I need from Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom?. Now on separate pages, behind where I log my reading, I name the book (with all the notes needed for referencing). I now have a place for the quote, with the page where it was found.
Hey Deborah, that's really interesting to hear that you log all of the books you've read in your notebook. But it sounds like it must have been a little difficult using a quote book in the past? Sounds like you've got a good idea with how to log your reading now on separate pages. Hope that you found this video helpful. See you in the comments again soon :)
@@ollystaniland I liked my little quote book. It was a commercially produced journal that did not meet my needs that gave me the idea to start logging the books I read. I knew I would not be able to use the quotes in the quote book without re-reading the entire book where I originally found it. I have a log of how many (and what books) i read in a specific year. Only books that i actually quote will get their specific foot notable title page. I like to read to the point that I have to time how long I read

Thank you for this! I'm older and find everyone is speaking too fast and I struggle to understand them. I hope there is an app in the future that will help me by slowing down the speech of all the younger people so I can understand them. Or perhaps give me subtitles? 😂

you know im cooked when im losing interest 60 seconds into this what has tiktok and youtube shorts doing to me
Noooo, sorry to hear that alex! Hope this gave you some ideas of how to focus? :)
@ definitely did i started note booking before but not as much as i should its mainly filled with poems finance checklists etc but i should definitely start doing it more thanks to this
@alex-b2d9b Awesome to hear bro, best of luck. Let me know how it goes! :)
It's always an Ali Abdal video
So true, Shekar!! :)

In all seriousness great, concise content
Haha, you have a point, Cassadee. But for what it's worth, if I can introduce you to a few more concepts of how to stop spending all your time on social media, just for watching a few videos... I think that's a trade-off that's worth it. Hope that makes sense lol, thanks for the support :)
For me the video at the end was not visible. I mean the link. Moreover, is it only my impression that you were speaking faster than in other videos🤔? I know that I can slow you down but then it sounds unnatural🙈
Top right is a little spoke looking button that is the settings, you can speed up or slow down videos there 😉
@free2trvl I know, I wrote about that
Hey Barbara, if you check now - the video should be visible, sorry that wasn't there for you first time. In terms of the speaking, I think you might be right that I was speaking slightly faster than in other videos. I think I was just so excited to talk about the Dopamine Detox that I got a bit carried away haha. Hopefully this won't be an issue in my future videos. Thanks for your support, as always 🫶
Thanks for the suggestion, Jennifer. Appreciate it :)
Thank you for this! I'm older and find everyone is speaking too fast and I struggle to understand them.
I hope there is an app in the future that will help me by slowing down the speech of all the younger people so I can understand them. Or perhaps give me subtitles? 😂
is this video going insanely fast?
Now that you say this.. yes definitely
@ okay good lol i stopped watching cause it was stressing me out and i fully thought that im crazy
Hey Kait and Li, sorry about this - you're right that the video was going just a bit more quickly than usual. I think I was just really excited to talk about the 'Dopamine Detox', hopefully this won't be an issue in future videos. :)
@ no worries it wasnt really an issue
@ omg yes definitely not an issue! i’m dramatic! please don’t feel discouraged or anything. so sorry 💗
Have you guys noticed that he is manipulating us into watching more and more with his videos by leaving blanc information and providing his channel's video easily as a response to that information missing? PS: Still love your content, dont take Thais as a hate comment, only a funny reference ok? ❤
Haha, I wouldn't call it 'manipulating' lol. In all seriousness, if you have a look at the content on my channel, you'll notice that most of the videos really work together and in order to get the best results, you need to understand a few different concepts. Hope that makes sense, glad that you're finding my content helpful :))
@ollystaniland I watched like 4 videos in a row before realising how interested and entangled I got in your content. Really good work. And I find your voice super chill.
this is awesome! my problem is scrolling through YT Shorts. is there a way to disable it?
I use podcasts as substitute for youtube.
That's an awesome suggestion! Does that help you waste less time on UA-cam?
